W I N T E R GOVERNOR 2017/2018 BOARD NORMA JOHNSTON Governor s Message Civitans, was a success and a good time had by all in attendance. GOVERNOR-ELECT SUE GIBSON IMMEDIATE PAST GOVENOR MAX LETHAM PAST GOVERNOR-DIRECTOR LYLE ARMSTRONG Kawartha Lakes, London DISTRICT SECRETARY JOHN VEALS DISTRICT TREASURER CARROLL WILSON AREA DIRECTORS: BOB EMO Barrie, Don Mills, Midland, Toronto Lung MIRANDA JURILJ Brampton, Halton, Mississauga, Oakville MARLYNE VAN EXAN Agincourt, Dundas, Durham, Kitchener JUDGE ADVOCATE As 2017, our Canada 150 th, draws to a close we pause to reflect and give thanks for the many families and friends with which we have had the opportunity of sharing laughs, tears, making memories, and putting a smile on someone s face. A very blessed Christmas to the compassionate, caring, fantastic hard working Civitans of Canadian District West. Take time to enjoy the season with family and friends. I can t stress enough, the most important asset we have is our families and our extended families in Civitan. We have lost some of our own this year and that has in itself been a great sorrow. Our Region 5 Convention, many thanks to Mississauga and Halton We are gearing up for Sno-Do, please support our Junior Governor Stacie with a pledge, as I know she has written to all the clubs requesting support. Why not come out and join the Juniors at their Saturday Banquet and get a chance to meet and chat with our International President Kendyl and her husband Michael. More information is in this issue of Beaver Tales. I am truly honoured and proud to be your Governor for In the coming 10 Months we will have a lot of call on us for help and we will Kindle Our Fire For Civitan and exceed expectations. Remember, the smallest thing you do for others makes a big difference. Wishing you all a safe and prosperous New Year. Yours in Civitan, Governor Norma BILL HISCOTT

2 Dundas Civitan Club November 26th, th Anniversary On October 23, we were pleased to welcome Governor Norma Johnston and Area Director Marlyne Van Exan to our installation meeting and dinner. Norma installed our new executive, while Marlyne updated us on District activities. Bruce Davey has assumed the duties of President, with the help of an executive team consisting of Robin Gruenwald, Dave Morden, Jean Genereaux, Liz Matthews, Pam Jurilj, and Pam Walker. We also had the pleasure of installing Anne Pearson as our newest member. Anne has already had a long association with the club. She recently retired as director of the Dundas Learning Centre, and is the wife of Immediate Past President Robin Gruenwald. Anne's contributions to the club s work over the years have included chairing the fashion show committee. The fall of 2017 has been a busy one for us, as we have undertaken needed renovations of the Dundas Learning Centre, such as the installation of grab bars in the wash rooms that will help enhance its accessibility. We completed a late fall Adopt A Road clean up of the heavily used Dundas Civitan President Bruce Davey (left) and Cootes Drive shared trail. For that Junior Governor Stacie Perreault (third from left) task, we were able to assemble a large team of senior and junior Civitans. Junior Governor and Dundas juniors president Stacie Perreault was able to recruit five volunteers following an information night she had organized.

3 Halton Civitan Club July 9, th Anniversary It has been a very busy first quarter for the Halton Civitan Club. In November Santa Max made an appearance at the CWSDS monthly bingo. There were over 70 clients, and more than 70 volunteers in attendance. Santa had a Christmas bag for all the clients and they were overjoyed to see him. The club put together 50 purses to donate to the Halton Women s Centre and Halton Women s Shelter. A huge thank you goes out to Joyce Evans and the Midland Civitan Club for their help in donating slightly used purses plus including a huge amount of product to put in the purses. The purses have been delivered and will be given out as Christmas gifts. The Burlington Jr. Civitan club continues to thrive in their community. We put together 300 birthing kits to be delivered to new moms in Haiti. We spent an afternoon putting these kits together. It was a good feeling knowing that we were helping new moms and their new-born babies to get a clean start to a new life. Our Claxton fruit cake sales and shortbread cookie sales are doing extremely well this year. We are volunteering at the Lighthouse for Grieving Children s Bring and Buy sale.

4 Kitchener-Waterloo Civitan June Years Kitchener Waterloo Civitan Club Report for December 2017 The Crown and Anchor fundraiser event at Bingaman s during Oktoberfest went extremely well. We were able to secure two Crown and Anchor locations on site. This is a fun time and requires lots of volunteer help hours. Without their help this would not happen. The Wonders of Winter Christmas light display in Waterloo Park (opening date) is December 2nd with fireworks! Our club will be there that night and December 22 nd. The trolley will be running both of these nights. If you are in the area, come and say Hi! Our club Claxton cake sales and World Finest Chocolate sales are going well. It is a busy time for everyone and so we have postponed our Christmas social until the new year. We continue to try new locations for our monthly meetings. If you want to know where we are and when we are meeting you can find us at We wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and prosperous K-W CIVITAN CLUB Paula Roberts

London - Middlesex Civitan June Years 5 Community Living London Hallowe en dance costume winners Presenting $3,000 to SARI Therapeutic Riding with Vixen the horse The Civitan Trick Dogs did three performances since the last report. The first was on Sept. 4, 2017 at Chelsea Park Long Term Care Home and was dedicated to Jack and Julie Phoenix who reside at Chelsea Park. After the usual introduction where we talk about the Civitan Club and its service to the community, the narrator introduced Jack and Julie and described their years of service to the Civitan Club. The second performance took place on Nov. 3 with a house-bound citizen with Parkinson s disease. Brody did a private show and provided therapeutic comfort. On Nov. 25, we did a show at Mapleview Terrace Retirement Home and this was our 36th performance!

Midland Civitan Club July 28, st Anniversary The Midland Civitan Club held its annual inaugural dinner on Saturday October 14 th, As the club celebrated its 50 th anniversary in July, it was decided that this would be combined with the inaugural dinner. We held this event at The Place in Balm Beach (aka Georgian Swinging Seniors) with 61 people in attendance at this event including 4 mayors from local municipalities and our local MP and MPP. We also had our Area Director Civitan Bob Emo in attendance to install the Executive. This was an enjoyable evening of fellowship good food and celebration with friends, members old and new, and dignitaries. Canadian District West Governor Civitan Norma Johnston (a member of the Midland Civitan Club) installed a new member into the club that night. The club is well into the annual sale of Claxton Fruit Cake and expect all the stock to be sold out very shortly. The Santa Claus parade is the clubs biggest project and involves many hours of preparation. Our parade chairperson, Civitan John Veals starts planning this in August with a letter to council to obtain permission to hold the parade. From there applications are sent out to previous participants and we also have it displayed on the Midland Civitan Club Website. Once applications are received they are organized in a line up to go down the parade route. Dignitaries must be contacted for participation in the parade. This year the parade was held on Saturday November 25 th, 2017 and our theme was Colours of Christmas. We had 60 entries in the parade and the weather held for us. All the kids standing along the route were waiting anxiously for the arrival of Santa Claus on the last float. They were not disappointed, and Canada Post was at the head of the parade for the kids to hand in their letters to Santa Claus with a list of what they wanted for Christmas. We give out trophies to the winners. Presidents Choice, 1 st place, 2 nd place, 3 rd place, Best Costume, and Best Music. All these trophies are donated by local businesses and handed out at the awards presentation following the parade. We hold a breakfast for our members the Saturday following the parade to 6

7 thank them for their participation in the parade. There are many man hours put into the parade with 25 out of 30 members participating the day of the parade and 11 non-midland Civitan Club members assisting. Some members of our club work on the floats while others work in the costumes area to get the clowns, elves and other costumed figures ready for the parade. As usual we continue to run bingo three times a month and this is our biggest fund raiser. The club shuts down for the month of December as all our members are recuperating from the parade and preparing for the busy holiday season coming up. The Midland Civitan Club would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

8 Oakville Civitan Club June 17, th anniversary Oakville Club Sponsors Summer Youth Fashion Initiative (ProAction Cops & Kids Fashion Program) For the second year, the Oakville Club sponsored an important program targeting at risk youth in Toronto (who have had interactions with the law and/or are living in foster homes) to build confidence and explore careers in the fashion industry. Club members Phil Szabo and George Horhota attended the graduation event at Toronto s BrightLane. They are joined by Kelly Walker, co-sponsor and star of The Real Housewives of Toronto TV series. Metro Toronto Police volunteer each week during the summer program in plain clothes -- only on graduation day do the students see them in police uniform! 8 th Annual Oakville Civitan Charity Golf Classic After a two-year hiatus, the Club held its annual charity golf tournament on September 30 th. Hosted by Osprey Valley Golf Club Hoot Course (in Alton) and Community Trust -- which made the incredibly generous donation of all golf and cart fees - the day attracted 92 golfers. Osprey has three 18-holes courses and the Hoot course is rated in the top 100 of ALL golf courses in Canada by SCOREGolf Magazine; it did not disappoint. All players, in the Club s usual post tournament on-line survey, remarked at how well maintained the course was and the pace of play was a normal 4 hours and 15 minutes. The tournament raised $24,000 for Mind Forward Brain Injury Services (formerly known as Peel Halton Dufferin Acquired Brain Injury Services) and The Darling Home For Kids. The Club has been a passionate supporter of both service organizations who support their

9 communities with front line services. Mind Forward s Executive Director Al McMullan, a committed Oakville Civitan Club member, gave an emotional luncheon address about how the proceeds from the tournament will help the organization s hundreds of clients dealing with the challenges of their brain injuries. Civitan Club Member John Di Lorito once again stepped up big time to support the Club and attracted 32 guests associated with the Ontario Food Terminal - long time supporters of our golf tournament - and thousands of dollars in sponsorships. John is a true Civitan! We are returning to Osprey Valley for our 9 th Annual Tournament on September 15, Dorval Crossing Civitan Market Closes Another Season On the last Saturday in November, Civitan Doug Guthrie officiated at the closing of the annual Dorval Crossing Civitan Farmers Market. This has become a major fundraiser for the Club and since relocating from Hopedale Mall to Dorval Crossing, Doug has increased the number and variety of vendors -- not to mention funds raised for the Club s good works. From May to November, Doug arrives before the sun rises to oversee the vendors arrival and stays until the 2:00 pm closing which is why he has earned the title mayor of the market, in addition to his leadership of the Delta Bingo.

10 Governor Elect s Message Hopefully, all club officers completed their training by the November 15 th deadline. When Spring convention comes around, it would be a joy to see all delegates able to sign in for credentials and vote for their clubs, as certified clubs in good standing. That is the meeting where we elect the District Board officers. Hopefully Past Governor Max s notice a few weeks ago has some people thinking about stepping up and putting their name in the ring nominations open January 1 st, and we need to have new candidates for open positions. Won t you think about it? Before that, I will be heading down to Birmingham for Governor Elect Training mid January, and would encourage anyone who would like to maybe consider a team position to make contact. The Civitan organization is changing at the top; we need to show we are small but mighty to Head Office, the Region and our communities. To do that, we need a strong District team. For those of us in the sunny South part of the province, will winter ever start? I was up in Huntsville and Bracebridge about 10 days ago, where it was quite cold, icy and snowy. Hopefully it will continue to snow up north including in Barrie, so that SnoDo will be a success for the North American teens this year! If your club has not yet sponsored our Junior Governor Stacie, please do so. She needs our support. Here s wishing each and every one of you a Merry Christmas, and a happy and healthy New Year! Sue Gibson, Governor Elect Canadian District West
