1 September st ANNUAL FALL FEST September 2 through November 11, 2014 Ten Weeks of Fun in the Fall For the twenty first year, we celebrate great autumn golf weather with special events, special prices and special giveaways. It s the best time of year to play golf! It s Fall Fest! Congratulations to Neal Choski for winning the 2014 Village Links Junior Golf Championship! Neal edged out Spiro Athanas in an exciting playoff. The Swingin Set Ladies League held their annual Championship July 29, 30, 31. Congratulations to Nancy Carter, who took Low Gross! Flight winners included Jan Toft, Barb Christenson, Debbie Burzynski, Sue Weisman and Evelyn Cummings. Great job Ladies! and light hors d'oeuvres after the round. Both the 18-hole and 9-hole golf courses are open on regular tees and greens through Sunday December 7. After December 7, the 18-hole course is closed for the season. The 9-hole course is open on temporary tees and greens all winter. Our annual Holiday Open House is Sunday December 7, 2014 Noon to 5:00 PM. Mark your calendar! Fall Fest 2014 September 2 - November 11 Fall Scramble #1 Sunday September 14 Annual greens aeration is scheduled on the 9-hole course for September 29 and on the 18-hole course for October 6. Greens fees are discounted 25% for one week on the aerated course during the aeration, topdressing and recovery. Fairways will be spiked but not aerated, minimizing the disruption to the playing surface. We publish green aeration dates on our website so you are never surprised by course conditions. Sign Up early for the 4th Annual Iron Man Open on Sunday November 16. Men and Women golfers are eligible (no handicap required). 3 Among his accomplishments: * Nationally recognized for the very successful KEEP PACE program used at the Village Links * First public golf course in the world to be recognized by Audubon International as a Wildlife Sanctuary * Multiple award winner of GolfShop Magazine s 100 Best Golf Shops in America Influenced by his leadership, some of his employees have become: Matt Pekarek retired in June. Back in 1967, when the Village Links of Glen Ellyn first opened it s fairways to the public golfer, a young Matthew Pekarek found himself picking up golf balls by hand, on it s newly opened driving range. Only 17 years old at the time, this was just a summer job for Matt to earn extra cash for college, attending the University of Missouri, as an Evans Scholar. 47 years later, Matt Pekarek has retired from the Village Links of Glen Ellyn, having done practically every job, serving his last 30 years as Recreation Director and General Manager. Through his leadership, centered on his belief to Do the right thing, Do it the right way, and Do it efficiently, the Village Links has enjoyed a reputation as one of the finest public golf courses in the Midwest, if not the entire country. The Village Links has been, and remains, a favorite host site for the United States Golf Association, the PGA of America, the PGA Tour, and many local and state associations. Through the years, the Village Links has hosted more than 40 events and qualifiers for these organizations. Matt s desire was always to draw attention to the Village Links and the Village of Glen Ellyn, and to be recognized as among the best. * PGA of America President * Owner of a multi-million dollar golf equipment company * PGA Section Merchandiser of the Year, Junior Golf Leader of the Year, and Assistant Professional of the Year Matt also continues his passion to serve the public golfer by remaining a volunteer for the Chicago District Golf Association, where he regularly serves as a Rules Committee Member. Matt became the Association s 50th President in 2012, and was awarded the prestigious Ike Grainger Award for 25 years of service. He also served as the Director of the Western Golf Association, and as a member of the United States Golf Association Regional Affairs Committee. Since it s inception in 1995, Matt has been a Director for the Ed Posh Scholarship Fund, and is an original member of the Fund s Founders Club. Through his Committment to Excellence in Public Golf since 1967, Matt Pekarek has left The Village Links of Glen Ellyn a great place to enjoy the game. We hope he does so. Fall afternoons are some of the nicest golfing days of the year. You can get a foursome on the 18-hole course for just $100 after 12:00 noon, on the five Sunday afternoons when the Bears are playing (Sept. 7, 28 Oct. 5, 12, 19, 29, Nov. 12, 26). Go Bears! With seating for up to 150, the banquet room has unmatched golf course views that will wow your guests. The Blue Heron South Room comes complete with an event patio for private use during the outdoor season. The Blue Heron Room can be divided in two to accommodate groups of fewer than 75. 6 . 4th Annual Iron Man Open Sunday November 16 The 4th Annual Iron Man Open will be held Sunday November 16 with a 10:00 AM Shotgun Start. The Iron Man Format is a 2 Person Scramble on Holes 1-6; a 2 Person Best Ball on Holes 7-12; and a 2 Person Alternate Shot on Holes Men and Women golfers are eligible (no handicap required). The team with the lowest combined score using the Peoria Handicap System (randomly drawn holes) will be crowned the Village Links Iron Man Champion. Everyone wins a prize. The $100 per player entry fee includes 18-holes of golf with cart, great prizes and a hearty all-you-can-eat hot dog and chili lunch before and during your round, beverages, and light hors d'oeuvres after the round. This event is limited to the first 72 teams to sign up in the Golf Shop. Visit for complete details. 2 New Offerings this Fall on the 9 Hole Course FOOT GOLF Don t confuse this new, growing sport with a foot wedge (what you might use to get out of the woods). Foot Golf is played with a soccer ball. We will set up an 18 hole course, on the 9-Hole Course. You don t have to be an expert golfer, or an expert soccer player to enjoy this new game. All you need is a soccer ball, and a little imagination. The 18 hole fee will be $12, and tee times will be offered at select times during the week. Watch on the website, or call the Golf Shop for more details. BIG Hole Scramb amble On Sunday, September 28, come join us for our inaugural BIG HOLE Scramble. Put your best team together, for 9 holes of 4some scramble. This is no ordinary scramble. The course will be the same, but instead of putting at the normal 4-1/4 cup, your team will be putting at a special 8 cup! We will have gross and net prizes, using the peoria handicapping system. Tee off is a 2:00pm Shotgun. Limited to first 72 players. The cost is $49 per person, and includes green fee and cart, prizes, and buffet dinner in the Blue Heron Room.
