3 GWRRA Directors Ray & Sandy Garris Region E Directors Bob & Nicki Fowkes MN District Directors Joe & Jan Marek From your Chapter R Educator Dean Plank The Mastering of Snow Removal I know that it is late in the winter season to be discussing this, but with February and March typically being the months that we get the most snow, and as I write this, we are in a winter storm warning with a possible snow accumulation of 7-11 inches. Winter is sometimes referred to as Old Man Winter, but winter is all but frail. Winter can strike a deadly blow when you least expect it. That is why it is important to know the techniques of surviving winter. One of the most important is shoveling snow. A poor snow shoveling technique places a strain on the back and even the heart. More than 158,000 people were treated in emergency rooms, doctors' offices, and clinics for injuries that happened while shoveling or removing ice and snow manually during the winter of nationwide Shoveling snow can use up to as much energy as a person running 9 miles an hour. Although 15 minutes of snow shoveling benefits a HEALTHY heart. Fifteen minutes of benefits a healthy heart by maintaining or increasing cardiovascular fitness. Most people don t know that shoveling snow is like picking up heavy weights. Some of the injuries that can occur are repetitive twisting, improper lifting, and over exertion. Many of those injuries could be prevented by taking the time to prepare and think about how to move properly. To prevent these types of injuries you need to: 1. Choose the right shovel. The handle length is correct if you can slightly bend your knees when you are lifting a shovel full of snow - you are lifting with your knees not your back. 2. Warm up your muscles. Shoveling can be a vigorous activity. Before you begin this physical workout, warm up your muscles for 10 minutes with light exercise. 3. Don t use too large of a shovel. Ergonomic shovels with bent shafts are recommended to ease the strain on your back and heart 4. Tackle heavy wet snow in two stages. First skim on the top and then remove the bottom layer. 5. Place your hands at least 12 inches apart when gripping the shovel. Keep one close to the base of shovel when LIFTING to balance the weight and reduce lower back injuries. 6. Lift properly, stand with your legs apart, knees bent and your back straight. Lift with your legs not your back. Scoop small amounts of snow and walk it to where you want to place it. And step in the direction you want to throw the snow. 7. If you cannot say a sentence in one breath, slow down, you re working too hard. 8. Take frequent breaks. Stand up straight and walk around to extend lower back. Place your hands on your hips and bend backwards for several seconds. 9. Dress appropriately. Light, layered, water-repellent clothing provides both ventilation and insulation. It is also important to wear the appropriate head covering and thick, warm socks. Choose gloves or mittens that will keep your hands warm, dry, and blister-free. Avoid falls by wearing shoes or boots that have slip-resistant soles. Continued on Page 2 Friends for Fun, Safety & Knowledge 3
4 Continued from Page 1 With the number of snow blower injuries I ve included some safety tips for them too. 1. Let s start with the obvious. Turn off the engine to unclog a plugged chute or auger. Never place your hands in the chute or auger. Most snow blowers come with a tool to unplug the chute or auger. The reason is the auger are often under enough belt tension so that when you remove the snow in the auger it relieves the auger and with the belt tension it could move enough to cause bodily harm to your hands. I spray my chute with furniture polish to help prevent clogging. 2. If you run out of gas, wait for the engine to cool to prevent the gas from igniting. I usually fill my gas tank on my snow blower prior to even starting so I know I have enough. 3. Don t wear loose clothing or scarves that can get caught in the moving parts of a snow blower 4. I am guilty of this one because I don t do this - wear hearing protection because a gas powered snow blower runs at 85 decibels which is enough to cause hearing damage 5. Just like when shoveling, you need to take breaks. Maneuvering a heavy snow blower can cause you to over exert yourself just like shoveling. If you cannot finish a sentence with one breath, take a break. 6. Clear snow early and often--particularly if a large snowfall is expected. It is always best to begin shoveling/snow blowing when there is just a light covering of snow on the ground. Starting early will give you the best chance possible to avoid the potential injuries that come with moving packed, heavy snow. As always Be Safe Dean Plank GWRRA MN-R Chapter Educator Friends for Fun, Safety & Knowledge 4
