7 MT OLIVE BIRDER CLUB NEWS! SEPTEMBER 24, 2013 Birding Turkey Brook Park MT. OLIVE BIRDER CLUB TO HOST AN OWL WALK Fall is a great time to look for owls. Screech, Barred and Great Horned owls are all looking for nest sites for next year s breading season and are particularly vocal this time of year often heard calling at night. They will readily respond to a person mimicking their calls because they are quick to defend their new territories. Screech owls are our most common owl and often come very close when a call is imitated. Great horned owls will also respond to calls but do not normally come as close and are harder to spot at night. Barred owls are much less common and can usually only be heard in large woodland tracks with wetlands nearby. OWLS FACTS Eight species of owls can regularly be found in New Jersey at different times of the year but not all nest here. The Mt. Olive Birder Club recently celebrated its first anniversary at Branda s restaurant last weekend. The club was founded in September of 2012 by Lisa and Ben Fassett in an effort to share with the community their passion for the birds of Turkey Brook Park. The club is now nearly 12 members strong and interest in the club continues to grow. The club members meet regularly for dinner in order to share recent sightings and to plan for future walks, hikes, photo shoots and other outings. Dan Fuller, one of the clubs more seasoned birders and resident owler will be leading the walk in search of local screech and great-horned owls along the white trail in Turkey Brook Park on Friday, October 18th at 8pm. All are welcome to meet with us in the parking lot across from the dog park. Great Horned owls do not build their own nests. They use old red-tailed or red shoulder hawk nests. Great Horned owls begin laying eggs in late January in New Jersey Like all raptors, female owls are larger than males NJ s smallest owl, the Northern Saw-whet owl, weighs only 2.8 oz.
