1 Coolangatta/Mount Warning Dragon Boat Club Inc. Newsletter: August 2011 Vol 2 Issue 8 President's Report From sausage sizzles to theatre nights to the opening of Jack Evans Boat Harbourand finally last Sunday s barefoot bowls, this has been a very busy month. The club has raised the profile of the sport as well as some much needed funds, which are always welcome, with the added bonus that people participating have had a very good social time as well. How good it is to share time and create bonds with club members that do not just revolve around conversations regarding dragon bites and blisters! Our next excitement is the blessing of our new shorty, the 10 seater on the 14 th August. By the time you read this we will have chosen a name and plans will be in place. If you have not been to a blessing before it is a lovely way to connect with the ancient traditions of our sport, traditions that set it apart from most other sports available today. I would urge you to visit the QDBF website and read about the past and present of our sport. We will be taking the opportunity to have our two 20 seat boats blessed for the upcoming regatta season at the same time so it should be quite a spectacle. As always the works of a few make for the enjoyment of many. If you have the time and ability assistance is always welcome with any of the tasks related to running your club. If you would like to formalise that assistance by taking on a position in the club then put your hand up at our AGM next month (not this month as I stated last time. Helen almost had a heart attack!) See you on the water, Cheers, Dougal Dragons Abreast Report Dragons Abreast was given a surprise donation this month. The donation of $2000 from Tom Mann of Banora Point came about after he saw an article in the paper. Tom phoned Cheryl Beatty about his desire to make a donation. I contacted Tom and we had a discussion about our fundraising for the physio department of Murwillumbah hospital to help purchase a machine to treat lymphedema. He was very happy to be able to help us in this fundraising effort. His donation now gives Dragons Abreast $3000 towards the machine that costs approx $4500. We hope to have the remaining funds by Christmas of this year. A reminder to members of both clubs that the Garden Party for the Lions Banana Queen Entrant Ellie Lowe (Val s Granddaughter) is on Sunday 14 th at 2pm. Proceeds from Ellies activities last year gave $3039 to Dragons Abreast and helped in the purchase of our Pink Boat. Another date for the DA Calender is 16 th October. Dragons Abreast will be catering for the Tweed Valley Equestrian event. All proceeds from this day go to the NBCF. This is an excellent opportunity for our group to be active in the fight against Breast Cancer and to promote that there is indeed a fit healthily life to be achieved after diagnosis and treatment is over. Fourteen of our members have registered for the DAA National Regatta at Lake on the 9 th and 10 th September. This event is all encompassing and gives members a chance to take part in Sweeping, Coaching and Drumming Workshops as well as on water races for survivors and supporters and opportunity for letting our hair down after the event with a Dinner and entertainment. Helen McLean DAA/Mt Warning Coordinator Club Contact Details PLEASE NOTE THAT IF THE MESSAGE DOES NOT INDICATE THAT TRAINING IS CANCELLED - TRAINING IS ON This phone will be in the Key Container and improve our safety during night training also. Club Web Page Club Postal Address PO Box 863 Murwillumbah NSW 2484 Tom Mann and his daughter Elizabeth Lawrence together with Helen and Robyn. Tom was the very generous man who gave us a donation of $2000 towards our fundraising for the hospital physio department to purchase equipment for the treatment of lymphodermia. Lymphodermia is a common problem after treatment for breast cancer. It can also be a problem for anyone after surgery that involves lymph glands. Page 1 of 5

2 Dragons Abreast report August Well it s been a busy time as always in the life of dragon boating and regatta season is fast approaching. First on the agenda is the Lanakila regatta that many will be attending on 28 August. Then it will be all systems go towards the National Dragons Abreast regatta at Lake on 9 th and 10 th September. On Sunday Lorraine Montgommery from DA Gold Coast has requested that as many members as possible from DA Mt Warning and Redcliff attend their training session at 8 am followed by a breakfast discussion re some DA issues she had identified at the Ballarat conference as Michelle Hanton concludes her long rein as the DA Coordinator/representative since the inception of Dragons abreast Australia. Our banana Queen entrant Ellie Lowe has again nominated DA Mt warning as her charity and as such the next event on the fundraising calendar is garden party on 14 August at 2pm a request for scones has gone out and of course Helen has provided a wonderful recipe for instant success please see s. We have had a few social events with the Theatre Company at Murwillumbah staging of Scarlet O Hara at the Crimson Parrot a great night by all accounts and the annual Bowls day the costumes looked great. Well I m off to Bali tomorrow so keep training hard I ll have to catch up when I get back. Paddle Strong Robyn Sack Dragons Abreast Mt Warning President Coaches Report Coaching and paddling goals for this month are related to setting the club up for the upcoming regatta season. The training we put in now is what shows in seven months time when we attend State titles at Lake. Our focus is very much on technique at the moment to ensure all paddlers are using their bodies efficiently and to the maximum benefit of the boat and to the crew. We will be assisting paddlers by using video as much as possible and showing it to individuals so they can understand their strengths and weaknesses. Aligned with technique is strength and fitness. We use the Ergometer to test this and will publish tables for the club where each paddler has a number to identify their result. In this way we hope to give paddlers goals to aim for as they strive to improve their result which then improves the club s strength. A good result on the ergometer on its own, and good technique on its own, does not mean a good paddler is the result. The combination of the two is the magic mix that we all strive for and what your coaches try to help with. We can help with coaching; it is up to you to use that information on and off the water to become a better paddler. Selection in regatta teams is a competitive process, just like paddling in a race. As we head into regatta season, it is a tedious process of collecting names and registration fees for the regattas we as a Club, plan to attend. Paddlers who commit to regattas shall attend regular training sessions. We ask for some courtesy of paddlers to get their names and payment in early. Your coaches Dougal, Brenda, Jacqui & Chris Monthly Morning Teas The next First Saturday Morning Tea for 2011 will be held on Saturday 3 September Don't forget the $10 Supporters Membership for those who are interested in being part of the Dragons Abreast part of our Club. Don't forget - Condong Bowls Club Social Memberships at the Club are available for $10. The Bowls Club and the associated Vietnam Vets and Cane Toads bowlers have shown great support to our Dragon Boat Club and it is a small price to pay to show the same support back. Birthdays for August 5 August Shauna Hughes 11 August Donna Davies 13 August Colin McKenzie 19 August Alison Johnston La la la la la laaa la.happy Birthday to YOUUUUUU! Blessing - Club Boats Our boat blessing ceremony is on next Sunday morning 10.am at this stage. I will notify if there is any change to that time. The nuns from Chung Tian Temple will be blessing our new 10 man boat together with our pink and blue boats in readiness for the regatta season. This is a beautiful ceremony and we encourage as many as possible to come along. Family and friends are welcome. We hope to have someone from the press to record this special day for our club. Please bring a chair for all attending, and a savoury or sweet finger food dish to enjoy with everyone after the ceremony. A number of our club members have put their hands up already for specific foods, so everyone else just bring a plate of whichever you choose. Would be nice if someone wanted to make some punch. Amanda, could you bring the cups along on that day too please. I will bring milk, plates, serviettes and all that sort of stuff. Dougal/Jacqui or someone the other small table as well as the big one, together with Marquee. We will use for the morning tea. It would be great if club members would wear either Pink or Blue corporate shirts or singlets. As all boats are being blessed a mixture may look nice. There are a number of items required by the nuns for this special ceremony. I am including as a reminder to those who have promised these items. 1 Long Table Lianne Johnston 1 Long Table Mt Warning club 2 white cloths Cheryl Forrester 2 vases of flowers Lois O'Connor 2 candle sticks Lois O'Connor Flower petals (need members to supply, please let me know if you can) 4x Fruit Bowls Kerri and Jan Uncut Fruit Me Please try and come along, you will enjoy it. Club ID From Strength to Strength (voted at the August meeting - you had to be there! Our 10 Person Boat has a name Dougal was able to advise the members present at the August meeting that several people had submitted names for the 10 person boat. From this pool of names, several nominations were made and the name receiving the most votes was: da da da daaaaah! "Wollumbin Spirit" To be officially named and blessed at the Blessing on Sunday 14 August at 10am at the Condong Boat Ramp, together with the re-blessing of Lady Annette and Lady Christine. Book for the "Garden Party" - message from Helen Debbie has asked me to remind you to please ring re confirming attendance at the Garden Party on Sunday. Debbie has only a couple or Dragons Abreast names, so hopefully a few more of you will be able to attend. Please confirm to Debbie at Dabelles Cafe by 10 th august Well the bowls day is over for another year! Thanks to everyone who turned up and made it such a success. I would appreciate constructive feed back so we can look at it for next year. It was a success in more ways than fund raising. It was great to support the Condong Bowling Club who provides us with a home for the boats and a meeting venue. The Club did not charge the green fees for our day. The Condong Cane Toads also provided the BBQ facilities and equipment free of charge and helped organize the draw. Many thanks to Toby who cooked the sausages, Kevin Palmer who was there at 8 am putting the bowls out ready for us and the Vietnam Vets who helped me to arrange the day. Many thanks to those members of our club who provided items for the raffle and to Sue K. Sue Y. Val and Amanda for helping out approaching businesses in town for items. That is not easy! I have just completed the thank notes to the business houses who provided raffle prizes and ask if they could follow up by delivering these to them. Thank you, John Mclean who was there all day helping with the draw and raffle, to those who supplied salad items, Anne for her help in preparation of lunch and Glen who rolled up his sleeves to wash up. Again thank you one and all. Thanks to the girls who attended the paddle and breakfast at Currumbin on Sunday. It was a fun and informative morning. I will be sending you all a copy of the report re Ballarat conference and we will need to get together and have a discussion as Lorraine would like feed back from our group. My home computer has gone to sleep and hopefully I will be able to wake it again shortly so as to access my s. I know you are all hoping it s in a coma

5 Rebel with a cause! Most of you are aware that Jacqui Turner entered an online competition last year with NRMA Sporting Legends. Just before Christmas 2010, she received a letter advising that the entry was one of the winners. Enclosed in the letter were 2 x $1000 gift cards for Rebel Sport. In January this year, she & Dougal visited Rebel Sport to use one of the gift cards and purchase some equipment for the Club. The final gift card was used in July to purchase more equipment. The Club now has the following sporting items: Sporting Equipment in the container 1 x Rowing Machine 1 x 7kg Medicine Ball 2 x 4kg Medicine Balls 1 x Tower 200 Gym 1 x 3ft 18kg Punching Bag + heavy duty hook 2 sets Punching Gloves 1 set of Punching Mitts 1 x 20kg Dumb Bell Weight set Dumb Bell sets ranging from 1.5kg, 2kg, 2.5kg, 3kg, 3.5kg, 4kg and 5kg 1 x Leather Jump Rope 1 x Nike Speed Rope 1 x Wahu Soccer Ball 20 x Marker Domes (witches hats) Additional items from Rebel for the Club 1 x Forerunner 305 GPS 1 x Stopwatch 1 x Sports bag to carry some sports gear for warm ups 4 x Front Lights for the Boat 1 x Fluoro yellow jacket for sweep 3 containers Electrolyte Sports Drink Powder for Regattas Along with these items purchased from Rebel, we have had an Abdominal Cruncher and 6 Frisbees donated. All our sporting equipment will be set up in the new container. We still need to construct some shelving at the rear of the container, make a timber wall rack for the individual dumb bells and build a frame for the Tower 200 Gym. We are looking for some able members to help make this happen. The first Thursday of every month, 5pm - 6pm, prior to our monthly meeting is dedicated to an on-land training session. So bring along your exercise mat and towel. Now, what to put in this column... Dougal says thank you to those who celebrated his magnificence with a dinner at the Thai restaurant recently. For once he seemed lost for words. Focus on training - Jacqui, Dougal and Brenda are really giving us a big push to get ready for the upcoming Regatta season and the 2012 State and Nationals. Ably supported by newly accredited Sweeps, Cheryl, Bill, Robyn and Brenda. Lianne Johnston has a new Grand Daughter - congratulations Lianne. Robyn Sparks is not languishing at a Market as I thought - she is walking across Australia or some such thing and may stop in at Darwin for a paddle before returning to us. Robyn Sack is once again in Bali - She will be back with us in time for Lanakila. Vicki O'Grady has achieved Hockey supremacy recently and is to be congratulated - can't quite remember the details but it's pretty good. She is also back paddling. Those of us who got to watch the other boat at training last Saturday can say "Yous were awesome". Maree has done Europe, done Wales, done London and is now in Ireland soaking up whatever you soak up in Ireland - Maree will return to us in time for Lanakila and we will really put it to her - that'll teach her to leave us in the lurch. Brenda has returned from the UK after spending a lovely time travelling and socialising with her sister. We are so glad she's back to keep Dougal on the straight and narrow. For Sale - see Jacqui Typhoon Paddle bag Color - Black and silver Holds two paddles Purchased at at 2011 State Titles Never used - still in bag ($85)
