1 INSIDE THIS ISSUE: Page President & Coaches Reports 1 DA Report 3 Training 3 Club Calendars 4 Meeting at a Glance 4 Dragon Boat Magazine 5 Bridge 2 Bridge 6 Bush Bash 14 th June Raffle 8 always liked the saying A champion team will always beat a team of champions. I am looking forward to getting back on the water and to see what the future may hold for our club. Donna has a new chant we don t want to go to team meetings. See You On The Water Mick President's Report It has been nice to have a good rest and give those niggling little injuries time to repair. We will be back to it before we know it as we gear up for the coming months. We are going to be a very busy little club with lots of events on the calendar and training to fit in, I get tired just looking at the calendar! Well the National Titles have been and gone and how well did we do! The Senior B Womens 10s AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONS over 200m and 500m for the second year in a row. The Senior B Mixed 10s AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONS over 500m and the second fastest team in Australia over 200m.The Senior A Mixed 20s the 3rd fastest team in Australia over 2km and not far off making the finals in the Senior A Mixed 20s over 200m and 500m.I would like to thank all of our paddlers, sweeps and drummers for a job well done. A special thanks goes out to our coaches for getting us to this level, Maree our club volunteer for putting in many difficult hours above and beyond on the days of competition and Linda Sammon did a great job keeping track of race times and marshalling. It takes teamwork to be successful and I have Coaches Report Web: Page 1 of 9 National Champions Small Boat Senior B Women s 200m National Champions Small Boat Senior B Women s 500m National Champions Small Boat Senior B Mixed 500m Runners Up Small Boat Senior B Mixed 200m Third Standard Boat Senior A Mixed 2000m Winners of Carbon paddle raffle draw at opening Was it a dream? How could all our stars align so completely to produce three gloriously successful days of competition at the 2014 Australian National Championships? Good luck? Not in this instance I believe. Hard work and self-belief created the good luck that finally caught up with us. After being on the losing end of some close calls and

2 desperate finishes during and since last year s Titles, we could step out of our boats and feel that we were worthy of our selection to represent Australia in Italy. Our Women s 10 were peerless in the way they demolished all they confronted over 200m and 500m. No matter how big the paddlers and name of the club they were taking on, the Mountain Women stood tall in a category of 16 clubs to repeat last year s domination of their category. 1mm never looked so impressive! Our Mixed 10, having been demoted to third overall last year had some business to attend to. 20 teams wanted the Gold, only one team got between us and another perfect result. Equal first in category was thrilling and a glorious comeback after Silver at the State Titles. Our Senior A Open 10 crew with two Masters and two Women raced beautifully. 20 high quality teams made life tough but that boat ran sweetly and fast for 2 days. What can we say about our Mixed 20 paddling down in age to Senior A? Excellent times over the shorter distances saw us finish in 6th out of 9 teams over 200m, 8th over 500m. Then the crazy motivation of a crew desperate to break club records to see the coach do a nudie run, combined with a desperation NOT to see the coach do a nudie run, saw us overtake 2 crews on our way to Third place. The paddling was relentless, the joy limitless when we found we had done so well. slow despite overtaking boats before and after corners. The commentator was almost as impressed as the paddlers. Linton Allen took charge of our Open 10 crew for some lovely quick runs. A wonderful return to competition after a difficult last year. Kerrie Allen reigned supreme at the pointy end as she ran us down the course again and again with different race plans for different crews, always looking to do her job that bit better to ensure success. We now know why Linton jumps when Kerrie calls him in to line! Lyn Wong fought butterflies big enough to carry her away when asked to drum the Open 10, but after some quick coaching from Kerrie she did such a good job that she was raring to go out for the semi next time. A huge 'Thank You' must go to Marie Rogers, without whom it is unlikely the National Titles would have run at all. Taking unpaid leave to represent our club, she was thrown into a major organising and clerical role where she and another volunteer ran an essential service for four days solid. On the first day she was provided with a sausage for lunch! Luxury. We salute you, nice to see your picture in the QDBF newsletter. Our only disappointment was that with the National Titles so close to home and possibly another 6 years before they return we had one supporter, Meredith, who could make the time to spectate at the pinnacle of our sport in Australia. Western Australia next year so we are not expecting an increase in support! That was the end of the paddling year. The new one is already rolling along. Our sweeps and drummer were fantastic. Chris Lonie could calm the most jittery paddler with her calm control and assured boat handling at the start pontoons and down the race course. Never a doubt whether we would complete a successful run meant all thoughts could be on the race plan. Sue Thompson owned the 2000m from the start with her forceful boat placement and beautifully consistent turns. Seconds were shaved off times as the boat never seemed to We would encourage all paddlers to attend training whenever possible to find or feed the addiction that makes us happy, healthy and a fabulous club to be part of. The more who attend, the more boats we can put on the water. Cheers, Brenda, Chris and Dougal Your Coaches Web: Page 2 of 9

3 Dragons Abreast Report "Warning Belles" This Saturday is a Come & Try day for DAMW combined with the Biggest Morning Tea, to raise funds for the Cancer Council. We would love to see some new members appear to give this wonderful sport a try and find the joy that we have all found in dragon boat paddling. CMW DAMW REPORT 1st May 2014 The highlight for our Clubs during the past month was the State and National Titles. How thrilled all members must be with the results. Mt Warning Dragons certainly made a statement at these events and all members directly involved or participating in the events or not, are very proud of the results. What a shining example of what can be achieved, despite a ripple or two presenting itself along the way, must surely be our wonderful members Brenda, Jan, Susan and Cheryl who fought shoulder to shoulder with the Sporting crew to achieve the glory. Congratulations to all. Meanwhile back at the ramp the remaining members have been doing what they enjoy, under the watchful eye of Jenny, who has been organizing an encouraging paddle, for all involved. Thank you Jenny for all your hard work and to Glen for steering and supervising the safety of all in the boat. Training and fundraising for the Sarasota crew continues, with catering at the TVEG dressage day on Sunday 11th May well in hand. A special request for cakes or slices to sell on the day would be appreciated and could be brought to training on the 10th May for collection. A very kind donation of one hundred dollars was received from Sharon Hinks last month to assist our paddlers to achieve their dreams. Thank you so much Sharon for your very generous support. DAMW are out on the street spreading the word about our organization this week, at the street stall we are holding in Main Street Murwillumbah. On the 2nd May and 8th May our members will be outside Bakers Delight promoting Pink Bun Month for BCNA and ourselves our course. Happy paddling to all. Christine Lonie President DA Mt.
