1 INSIDE THIS ISSUE: Page Reports 1 Training 1 Club Calendars 2 Meeting at a Glance 2 Recent New Members 3 Italy Sep 2014 Update 3 DA Report 4 News from IDBF 5 Noticeboard 6 Photos from recent Events 8 President's Report It was great to see our club in the first regatta of the season at Kawana, picking up where we left off last season. Our women's 10s team again pulled out a great result against some tough competition, the mixed 20s team placed well in the 2km and our mixed 10s did a great job in the 1km. Don't forget that we were competing in all age group racing. It was good to have the mixed format racing which made the day interesting but also gave our teams plenty of opportunities to race on the day. It was also an advantage to travel by bus as a team and not have to worry about transport up and back, and always fun to add some bling to our growing collection. Our corporate regatta was a big success with thirteen corporate teams and two Dragons Abreast teams competing. The day ran very smoothly with no major problems, maybe just a bit of hair pulling and headaches. There were 5 categories and the fastest time of the day being contested, the winners of the different categories seemed to be very competitive and proud of their achievements. I would like to thank all our members and their families who helped on the day. I would also like to thank the other members of the organising committee who's behind the scenes efforts made the regatta so successful. We raised over $3000 on the day. The Brunswick come and try day was also quite successful with almost two full boats. This would not be possible without the support of our members who turned up in force on the day to help out, again thank you for supporting our endeavours in promoting our club in the southern region. We are continuing to get a good roll up at training and as the weather warms up I would like to remind people to make sure they don t get dehydrated by taking plenty of water with them on the boat, using sun screen and wearing a hat if possible so as to avoid getting sunburnt or overheated whilst training. See you on the water Mick Coaches Report Spring has infected paddlers old and new as record numbers of bums are getting on seats on Saturday and particularly Tuesday's. This is a fantastic reward for the time club members have spent publicising our club at recent club organised events. Thank you to all who have helped so generously recently. Let's carry that momentum into training and make this our best season yet. Our corporate regatta was a great success with many new groups hitting the water for the first time. Thanks to all who organised teams to attend. A special mention must go to Cheryl Forrester who brought most of the local schools along. Thanks also to those who have run training recently during our absences. The cumulative experience that our paddlers have means there are no problems with getting a well-run session completed without us. We will keep testing the theory! We are looking for a commitment to training now from paddlers heading to State and National titles. Only 10 training weeks left this year so expect training intensity to keep picking up. The addition of Thursday training will also be a chance to increase your fitness and strength. We look forward to seeing you all enjoying this weather on the water soon, Training Type Sporting Sporting/ Dragons Abreast Combined training Your Coaches Time Tuesday 5pm Thursday 5pm (starts 10 October 2013) Saturday 7:30am Alternating Sundays at Brunswick River start date TO BE ADVISED. Sundays on Tweed River will commence after Christmas. Any changes to these times will be advised at training and by to members or by ringing the club mobile TRAINING ROUTINE Timing and movements will be as follows: (the same timings will apply on weekends, starting at 7:30) 5:00pm Arrive and park car, get all personal equipment ready, sign-on if book is available Boats will arrive at this time but will not be unloaded. 5:05pm All paddlers to complete warm-up walk/jog/run to cul-de-sac at the end of the Web: Page 1 of 11
2 road and back. If running then twice up and down the road. 5:15pm Assemble on pad with all paddling equipment for warm-up 5:20-5:25pm Set up teams for boats and launch required number of boats 5:30pm Leave jetty Reminders from General Meeting Oct 2013 Sign On Sheet Training levy $2 to be paid at each training session. Please fill in the sign on sheet correctly. $2 in payment column, then tick if paid. Do not tick if not paid and please put IOU in other payments column. These matters seem very trivial, but make life a lot easier for Sue when she is trying to balance the money for banking. Putting the boat back into the container after training Rather than a set roster it was decided that the person towing the boat trailer will request a show of hands at warm down each training session. We are hoping that this task will be shared among all club members so that we will not be relying on the same people all the time. Three or four people at each session is all that is needed. 4 Dragons Abreast Report "Warning Belles" DAMW Presidents Report DAMW held their AGM on 21st September and the following positions for the year were filled: President: Christine Lonie, Vice President: Brenda Cumming Thom, Treasurer: Helen McLean, Assistant Treasurer/ Public Officer: Susan Lonie, Secretary: Anne Bowden, DAA Coordinator: Helen McLean, DAA Coordinator Assistant: Robyn Sack, Team Manager: Jenny Travis, Coach: Jan O Regan and Jenny Travis, Facebook Page Manager: Robyn Sack, Uniform Manager: Kerrie Allen, Newsletter Editor: Yvonne Walsh Social Team/ Recruitment Team: Cheryl Beatty, Val Lowe, Margaret Purdon, Gwen Reisenweber (Self Nominated) As I look back over the past year, I see a great deal of activity on all fronts. We have been very strong supporting as many causes as we can, relating to breast cancer. From Dragons Abreast Australia, Breast Cancer Network Australia, Cancer Council and National Breast Cancer Foundation, to name a few. We have had many people happy to support us, like Dave Hurley, who shaved his hair and beard, as a fundraiser for us, at our Christmas break up party. Many of our fundraisers have been social events, as well as a different form of exercise for us and most members have enjoyed working together. Our members were well rewarded for all this hard work by winning the Tweed Shire Council Wonder of Women Award, in the Team/ Group section and very well deserved. Successful grants that Helen has applied for, has allowed for us to purchase equipment, for the use by both the Sporting Club and DAMW. Several of our members have attended conferences and seminars about breast cancer, giving them information to share amongst the group. Yvonne has kindly agreed to begin a DAMW newsletter and anyone with information which could be shared, please contact Yvonne. We are very proud of our joint Sporting Club members who have trained very hard and achieved remarkable results. For those members who are held back from achieving these goals by health issues, measuring your own results and seeing yourselves getting stronger and fitter, is satisfying in itself. A target for some DAMW members is joining with DAGC to paddle in Sarasota next year. Our present goal for DAMW is recruiting new members and retaining them. To reach out into the community and finding these ladies, is proving to be challenging. Of late, members have been busy delivering the beautiful book of a Dragons Tale to any waiting room to be found or hairdressers etc. where women may frequent. Our Club must grow to survive and we are hoping that this activity may spark some interest. A highlight for this year is the birth of Jacqui and Grant s Ashlyn. We owe Jacqui so much for all she gave to both clubs, over her time with us and we are all so excited their dream of a beautiful baby has come true. Jean and Peter always need a special mention, for their loyal support. Morning tea would not be the same without them or in fact we probably wouldn t even have a morning tea, without their organization. I also wish to thank the Sporting Club members who support us in any way they can, especially Dougal and Brenda, who are always there for us. We are blessed to be one of the only clubs who can work together, to achieve both clubs individual goals. There are many things I could or should say but has escaped me at the moment. I will close with a very big thank you to DAMW executive/committee for all the support they have given me and the love and passion they have, for DAMW. Best wishes for the coming year. Christine Lonie President DA Mount Warning To all our Dragons Abreast Members We have decided to make our Dragons Abreast Australia National Paddle Day Event SATURDAY 12th OCTOBER not Sunday 13th. It would be really nice if all Dragons Abreast Members survivors and supporters, sporting and social would be involved. The paddle will take place after regular training on the Saturday around It will just take the form of a paddle where all out members wear Warning Belles Uniforms, we take some photos for promotional use and all of us have a paddle together in one boat. We won t be raising funds or doing anything else spectacular just being together as one Dragons Abreast Group on the water. This is something we don't get the chance to do very often. Hoping everyone will be involved. Re: Lunch and Fashion Parade Sat 19th Oct: For information, see the flyer in the noticeboard section of this newsletter and please be aware that numbers and payment need to be in by the weekend of the 12th/13th October for catering purposes. 5 News from IDBF IDBF World Cup 2014 During the recent World Championships in Szeged, Hungary, IDBF Member delegates also gathered for the 14th IDBF Members Congress to discuss all matters of International Dragon Boating. The major news item was the announcement of a new bi-annual event to be held in China on the 5th day of the 5th month of the lunar calendar, the traditional day of the Dragon Boat Festival in China for what will become known as the IDBF World Cup. The top 6-10 teams from the World Championships held in Szeged this year will be invited to send a team to compete in the premier, open and mixed divisions against the very best teams from China. The first event will provisionally be held on Monday 2nd June 2014 but the exact details will be finalised in late October at a meeting between the IDBF, the Chinese Dragon Boat (Longzhou) Association (CDBA) and Chinese Television CCTV, who will be the IDBF Media Partner and broadcast the IDBF World Cup on their national channels in China and through CCTV Sport, to a world-wide audience. International Breast Cancer Paddlers Commission (IBCPC) Participatory Dragon Boat Festival Oct Sarasota, Florida, USA There are now well over 100 teams registered for this event and the deadline for the initial head count submissions has passed. Future milestones to be aware of: Registration Payment: The final payment for Early Bird registration is due no later than November 1, 2013 and invoicing will be based on your best estimated head count of paddlers, drummers, steers and supporters. Early bird fee is $200 for each paddler up to 26 and each supporter. Standard registration balances will be due April 1, 2014 and again invoicing will be based on your estimated head count at $225 per team member and supporter. Non-crew individual paddler and partial teams up to 10 paddlers: Registration will open January 15, 2014 for individual or small groups of paddlers who are not affiliated with a team that is registered for the event. If you have a partial team planning to attend (6 to 10 paddlers), please contact the organisers now as they already have inquiries about combining partial teams for composite crews. Contact: registration@sarastoabcs2014festival.org A Team Crew Member Registration Form can be submitted anytime after your team is registered and all crew members forms should be completed by May 1, Visit and click on the Registration header for more information. Final rosters of crew members and supporters and Waivers and Release of Liability for each crew member are due August 1, 2014 and rosters cannot be changed after that date. Accommodations: Your hotel bookings will require a 50% deposit by April 30, 2014 Steers Information: You still have plenty of time to train your steersperson. Remember, all crews will be required to have a BCS steersperson and drummer to meet the IBCPC requirement. Also, we are creating a steering pool for those teams not bringing their own steersperson. There will be a special incentive for any qualified BCS steersperson who would like to be part of the pool. Please contact committee@ibcpc.com for more information. Parade and Party: Get your creative juices flowing and start thinking about your parade costumes, country of origin flags, and lapel pins to trade with your global teammates! Adelaide to host CCWC in 2016 It was also announced at the IDBF Congress in Szeged that Adelaide would be the host city for the 2016 Club Crew World Championships after Korea withdrew their submission. The Australian delegates were asked to ensure that the dates for the event coincided with school holidays to allow junior crews to compete. Down to two for WDBC in 2017 Russia and The Netherlands will both make formal presentations to the IDBF Congress during the CCWC in Italy next year to decide who will be the host the 2017 World Nations Dragon Boat Championships following the surprise withdrawal of Poland. Both countries were unprepared to submit their formal bids at this year s Congress so it was agreed that they be given a further 12 months to prepare and present their submissions in Ravenna in September Interesting Videos to check out: The A-Team (Auroras): Club Crew World Championships 2014 RAVENNA IDBF: Next Meeting The next Club Meeting will be held on Thursday evening, 7 th NOV. at the Condong Bowls Club pm for 5.30pm start. 7 RESEARCH PROJECT - RETAINING THE MEMBERSHIP OF WOMEN IN SPORT Dear NSO Colleague You may be interested in a research project that CAS is currently conducting into the reasons that masters aged women play sport and the barriers and challenges that they face on a day to day basis. This research project is being directed primarily at Masters aged athletes who have competed at recent Australian Masters Games or who are competing in the 14 th Australian Masters Games in Geelong next week. Over 7,000 women have been ed the survey and will be asked to complete and submit it online. The Retaining the Membership of Women in Sport project is supported by the Australian Department of Regional Australia, Local Government, Arts and Sport, the Australian WomenSport and Recreation Association and SportInfo and I intend sharing the results and findings with you later in the year. If the retention of women in sport is of interest to your sport then you may like to forward the link below to your masters aged female competitors. Survey Link: If you are just interested to have a look at the questionnaire please click on the link and work through the questions. It will take about 18 minutes to get right through the survey. Face to face one-on-one interviews will also be conducted as part of the project to provide a greater depth of response. CAS plans to hold a forum with NSO s to discuss the outcomes and findings of the research later this year so I will be back in touch with you later with the details. If you would like further information please give a call at your convenience.
