1 Delaware Valley Scale Modelers / chapter ipms usa Newsletter The Winners Circle Failures & Misfits by Tommy Kortman p h o t o s by th e au t h o r Paul Tomczak s Focke-Wulf Ta-183 Huckebein Welcome to the Island of Misfit Toys! Last month our theme looked into designs and products that just didn t work, and rising to the top of that heap was Paul Tomczak once again. Paul brought out a wonderfully done Focke Wulf Ta-183 Huckebein. The Huckebein (Hunchback) was supposed to be the successor to the Me262 Jet fighter. Development of the Ta 183 started as early as 1942 as Project VI, when the engineer Hans Multhopp assembled a team to design a new fighter, based on his understanding that previous Focke-Wulf design studies for jet fighters had no chance of reaching fruition because none had the potential for transonic speeds. The aircraft was intended to use the advanced Heinkel HeS 011 turbojet, although the first prototypes were to be powered by the Junkers Jumo 004B. Early studies also included an optional rocket engine for takeoff and combat boost. The wings were swept back at 40 and were mounted in the mid-fuselage position. The wings appear to be mounted very far forward compared to most designs, a side effect of attempting to keep the center of pressure (CoP) of the wing as a whole as close to the middle of the fuselage as possible. The original design used a T-tail, with a notably long vertical stabilizer and a seemingly undersized horizontal next meeting December 2 Five Favorite Contest! Holiday Party! stabilizer. The vertical tail was swept back at 60, and the horizontal tail was V-shaped and dihedralled. The horizontal surface was used only for trimming, the main pitching force being provided by the ailerons, which were well behind the center of gravity and thus could provide both pitch and continued on page 5 Visit the DVSM website, including our classified section:
2 Presidents Corner by Bob Doebley & Tommy Kortman Hello Fellow Styrene Junkies! Well, Turkey day has come and gone now everyone is waiting for the arrival of the little Fat Guy and his Reindeer also the little Dude in the diaper, sash and top hat ushering in the New Year. Finally after eating of all of the rich foods and over-imbibing of too many adult beverages you should be ready to start building. It looks like 2012 is going to be a good year for modeling. There are some great new and reissued kits coming out next year. Tamiya paint, primer and fillers are starting to filter back into our local hobby shops. Big Sit. I have just got the word that the Big Sit is a go this year. It is changing venues this year and will be held at Mainline Hobby shop in the Plymounth Meeting Mall on Saturday February 25th. All DVSM Members are welcome to come to this get together. This meeting about is about a bunch of models getting together and displaying models and having a good time. So what ever you build airplane, armor, ships, Sci Fi or automotive bring some models and come join us. Club Build. The club agreed that next years club build will be Zombie Killers. I think that this build has the potential to be better than the Half Track. There are a lot of fertile (sick) minds in this club. I can t wait to see what you come up with for his theme. Reminder: December s meeting is our Favorite Five contest and DVSM s annual Christmas Party. It seems to be getting bigger every year. Bring your better half and your favorite dish to share with the club. We will supply the plates, utensils and soda. I would like to wish everyone and your families have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. See you next year Bob Doebley Now let s see what Tommy has for us... Merry Christmas and Happy holidays to everyone. I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Let s get right into it. Five Favorite Contest. As Bob breifly mentioned eariler, this month is our annual Favorite Five contest and as such there will be no theme. The Favorite Five contest is a people s choice contest. The members may bring up to three models for the contest. All in attendance will be elligible to vote. You will vote for the five models that you would most like to take home with you if you could. (See me privately and maybe we can 2011 DVSM Holiday Party! As always our December meeting is occassion of annual party. The club will supply soda, plates, utensils, etc. Bring a covered dish of your favorite treat or entree to share with the group. Family aand friends are heartily invited to attend! work something out...wink, wink, nudge, nudge) This is always a very well attended contest, and I look forward to seeing table full of models once again. This club has a lot of talented modelers, and I foresee some tough voting decisions coming up. Good Luck to everyone Theme Contest Champ. Since this is December, it must mean that the 2011 DVSM Theme contest series has come to an end, and it s time to crown our newest champion. If you haven t already skipped to the points spread sheet, then let me be the first to announce that our 2011 DVSM Theme Contest Champion is Paul Kopczynski! It was a very close contest this year but Paul pulled out the victory by a single point over Paul Tomczak. Holy Cow, it was a real battle of the consonants. Congratulations Paul!! Let this be a warning to the other modeling factions, the airplane guys have thrown down the gauntlet for The 2012 Theme Contest series will kick off in January, and the first theme will be... God Save the King (...or a Queen if that s all you got). Yes, next month s theme will be all about Jolly Old England. I know there are a ton of modeling oppertunities here, so the table should be full. Good Luck ye Lads...and Lasses. I d like to take this opportunity to once again thank Mike Napoleon for all the hard work he puts in to make the winners plaques so fantastic and personal. I really think that Mike s plaques are the reason that this contest series is the hit that it is. Thanks again Mike. Also don t forget that we are having a year long club build contest next year. The theme will be Zombie Killer. The models will be due at the 2012 Christmas Party and they will also be judges by popular vote. Thanks to a comment from the masses last month,(mr. Stark) I had a thought regarding the Zombie Killer build. If anyone would like to approach this from the Zombie s point of view, I would be more than happy to allow that. Also, if the figure guys would like to model some Zombies...or Zombie Killers (Mila Jovovitch springs to mind...mmmmmm) that would be great too. OK folks, th, th, that s all for now so let s get building and remember...it S NOT JUST A FREAKIN HOBBY...ITS AN ADDICTION!!! Happy Holidays to all the glue sniffers out there! Merry Christmas! Tommy Kortman n

5 Paul Tomczak s Huckebein from page 1 roll control, functioning as elevon control surfaces. Many problems beset the project, including the chance of unstable flight characteristics. The Ta 183 had a short fuselage with the air intake passing under the cockpit and proceeding to the rear where the single engine was located. The pilot sat in a pressurized cockpit with a bubble canopy which provided excellent vision. The primary armament of the aircraft consisted of four 30 mm (1.18 in) Mk 108 cannons arranged around the air intake. It was also possible to carry a bomb load of 500 kg (1,100 lb), consisting of one SD or SC 500 bomb, one BT 200 bomb, five SD or SC bombs or a Rb 20/30 reconnaissance camera. The weapons load would be carried in the equipment space in the bottom of the fuselage and thus partially protrude about halfway from the fuselage, possibly allowing for other armament packages such as the Ruhrstahl X-4 wire-guided missile. Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on your point of view, the Ta183 never got off the drawing board. The war ended before that could happen. You can tell however that the plans must have been seen by both the Russians and the Americans, because the Ta183 s influence can clearly be seen in the Mig 15 and the F84 Sabre. Paul mounted his Huckebein on a well-crafted flight stand display base that featured an illustration by Gary Gueville of a Ta-183 in fictitious Luftwaffe 46 desert camo that was by his reference for the paint scheme on the model. Paul s model is a 1/72 scale example from PM Models. Paul said that it only took him about a week to build this model and that he built it specifically for this contest. Paul says he scratch built the interior because the model came with a funny shaped seat that no 1/72 scale pilot could fit in and a control stick. He reshaped the chair to at least slightly resemble an ejector seat (assuming the Germans would have put one in). He then built a control panel out of a half moon piece of plastic. Paul used a toothpick to paint on multiple dials and mounted the dashboard. Since no pictures of the cockpit exist, Pauls says, I just made it up. He also added a reflector gun sight made from plastic stock and used shading and dry brushing to give depth to the cockpit. Finally Paul added seat belts from thick foil. Because the plane has a clear bubble canopy it would have been easy to see if the cockpit was empty without adding at least a little extra detail. When asked about the color scheme, Paul said One of the reasons I chose the color scheme was it had markings similar to what you would have seen in Most of the German aircraft late in the war had outline crosses on the wings. The reference I was using had the balkenkreuz markings you would have seen on a ME 109F in desert colors. I think the white crosses provide a stark contrast to what is a more modern camouflage combining old and new. Speaking about the paint, the plane is painted with Testors Model Masters shot with an airbrush. The bottom is RLM 76 White-Blue, and the top side is Armor Sand and Military Brown. The pattern was freehanded without any masks. The dots in the pattern are Testors Rubber and they were all individually applied using a toothpick. Paul says it took him about 3 hours to paint the dots and there are approx 1100 of them. While the technique was tedious and he had to jump around the model so he wouldn t drag his hand through any of the dots, Paul likes the technique and would not hesitate to use it again. Once the paint was dry, Paul sealed it with Future, used a sludge wash for the panel lines, decaled it and top coated it with Dull-Coat. Paul then mounted the model on the base he also made. Nice job Paul. We look forward to seeing more of your work in the future. Well folks, that s it for this year, but the 2012 Theme contest series is kicking off in just a month so hit the benches and put some stuff on the tables. n
