1 Delaware Valley Scale Modelers / chapter ipms usa Newsletter November 2012?! The Winners Circle October Theme Winner: Blohm & Voss P-194 by Paul Tomczak Photo by tommy kortman By Tommy Kortman OK ghouls and goblins, last months theme winner was Paul Tomczak with his Blohm & Voss P-194. I have got an exceptionally easy time this month because Paul sent me such a terrific write-up on his model that I m not even going to try and improve on it. So, without further ado, here s Paul. The Aircraft: Special Hobby P.194 The Blohm & Voss P.194 was an asymmetric design for a mixed power ground attack aircraft to replace the Ju-87 Stuka. Crew and weapons (2x20mm, 2x30mm cannon) were located in a separate nacelle and the main fuselage contained the bomb bay (up to 1100 lbs. of bombs). It was to be powered by a BMW 801 radial piston engine and one BMW 003 turbojet. The jet engine in the nacelle was designed to counter the thrust of the propeller driven engine and the mixed thrust was estimated to produce a top speed of 484 mph. Its appearance resembled another earlier Blohm und Voss Theme Contest: The asymmetric aircraft, Tortoise and the Hare the Bv 141A (with a Program: TBA different nacelle and without a jet engine). This design was rejected by RLM, which instead selected the Messerschmitt Me 262 to fill the tactical bomber role. next meeting November 2 continued on page 7 Visit the DVSM website:

2 Presidents Corner by Bob Doebley & Tommy Kortman Hello Fellow Styrene Junkies! Hope everyone had a good Halloween. November is here and Thanksgiving is four weeks away. With the Holidays rushing upon us it is busy season with Family and friends. Hopefully, with the up coming time off I will be able to get some building done. On Saturday November 10th the Marauder-Con contest is being held in White Marsh, Md. This is about a 1.75 hour drive south of Philly. I certainly hope we have a good DVSM turn out. If anyone needs a ride, please contact me or see me at the meeting. If anyone wants a DVSM club shirt, the price is $ If you want to order one see me at the meeting. Remember that the December meeting is our annual Christmas Party and Favorite Five Contest. Bring three of your favorite models and a side dish of your favorite food along with your better half and kids to the party. That s it for this month I you do not make the meeting this month I wish you and your families a Happy Thanksgiving. Now Heres Tommy!!!!!!!!! Gooood Evening (best Lugosi impression), everybody. I trust that you all got plenty of candy... and promptly ate it all. Or, atleast liberated some of your kids haul. Like Uncle Bobby so eloquently... and briefly stated, we are getting down to the end of the year. This is the last theme contest for 2012 (November) and next month is not only the favorite five contest, but also the culmination of the Zombie Killer project. I have been working on what I had hoped was a suprise for the winner, but it looks like logistics and the clock will make that almost an impossibility, so I guess I can let the cat out of the bag. I am making the trophy for the Zombie Killer winner. If I can not get it done for December, It will be ready for the January meeting. I m sorry, but the company that produced a key feature of the trophy had a computer crash, and a trade show to do, so I will not be able to even order the item I need until Nov. 7. With shipping turn around, it will not leave me much time to complete the trophy. In the mean time I have worked on and completed the 2013 themes. So here they are. 7 Winner s Circle: BV P-194 by Paul Tomczak Continued from page 1 The Model The Special Hobby model is a short run injection molded plastic kit with a vacuformed canopy and a small PE fret that includes cockpit details and antennas. Being an asymmetric aircraft there were two fuselage components and 3 wings and no location tabs provided. Getting everything to line up in a straight line was a bear. The cockpit had OK detail and is clearly visible under the canopy. I added seat belts to the cockpit seat. The cockpit is painted RLM 66 (dark gray) like most German late war aircraft. While the model had recessed panel lines, there were light and easy to sand away. Painting This is my favorite part and painting a What If aircraft gives you the most artistic license. I looked through a number of web sites and found a really great Luftwaffe 46 site ( with profile drawings of many proposed aircraft. The one that really caught my eye was a brown lizard scheme which I duplicated on my model. To help with the light panel lines, I pre-shaded black lines on the model. The underside is painted in Azure blue (British color) to represent a late war RLM 65. My first light brown coat was misted on. The dark brown came next. Finally, I used British Sky to represent RLM 84 buff, a late war color, to create the outlines on the model. As I painted each color, I added some spotting along the fuselage and tail sides with each color. My initial pass of the Sky stripes had some over spray, so I loaded up both the dark and light brown and touched up close to the outlines, making the outlines smaller. I also added additional spots on the sides as I went along filling in blanks. All spray painting was done with a Pasche H single action airbrush. Decals I used after market German crosses, swastikas and Luftwaffe numbers to mark my model as an active duty 1946 ground attack aircraft. I used some left over hornet decals from an old Me-210 decal sheet for the squadron insignias on the piston engine fuselage sides. The Base I ve learned a lot at our meetings and talking to other modelers at DVSM. When you look at some of the award winning work done by our master modelers, you quickly realize its not just a great model sitting on the table. A base will set the tone for the model and make it stand out. Since I thought I would be entering some competitions in the future I created a few bases to display my models on. The base I paired with the P.194 simulates a concrete airfield and can be used with aircraft from I started with a wood plaque and I painted the base with Rustoleum straight from a rattle can. The concrete is actually four plastic sheet panels cut at an angle to simulate concrete squares. I lightly roughed the edge of the panels that abut other panels and really roughed the edges that lead to the ground work. Before painting I added cracks to the panels being sure to keep the cracks in corners or edges. To paint the panels, I used Tamiya gray for the concrete base color. I used several grays, blacks and browns as washes over the flat Tamiya paint. I wiped the washes off immediately before drying so the panels would be streaky. I used pencil lead to darken the cracks. Finally I added some drops of spilled fuel and oils using some well thinned enamel paint. To add some interest to the base, I added a small stripe of groundwork. To make the ground uneven I added some height with regular wall spackle built into small hills. After painting the ground with Tamiya dark brown, I placed a fallen tree, old landing gear wheel (cut in half to make it look buried), tiny rocks from the backyard and some other small pieces you might see discarded on an active field in war time. For the ground work I have a mix of grass, ballast and dirt from Woodland Scenics which I dumped over a coat of white glue. I added some small plants and also added some of the grass between concrete panels to connect the concrete with the groundwork. Pretty simple and finished in about day. Thanks for that information, Paul, and once again, congratulations on a job well done. Well, that just leaves us with the November theme contest for And we ve saved a unique twist for last. This month s theme is the Tortise and the Hare. You guys will need to pick EITHER a slow subject or a FAST subject for the contest. You can ONLY enter ONE model. However, we will be voting for two winners, one from each category. So let s see a table full of great models because the points are tight and it s still up for grabs. One last note, I have put together next years themes. I d like to thank everyone for their input and participation. It really is you guys that drive this series. That is all, now GO BUILD SOMETHING!!!n
