1 Delaware Valley Scale Modelers / chapter ipms usa Newsletter September 2012 The Winners Circle Japan! By Tommy Kortman August Theme Contest Winner: IJN Cruiser Maya by Bob Cicconi Anchors aweigh folks. This month s theme winner takes us all the way to the Pacific Ocean, and back in time to As you all remember, last month s theme was Land of the Rising Sun. It was about anything and everything dealing with Japan. Well, our very own Admiral Cicconi once again took a monthly theme honor with yet another in a long line of his impeccably built and incredibly detailed 1/700 aquatic masterpieces. The offering for this contest was the Hasagawa release of the Imperial Japanese Heavy Cruiser Maya. So let s start with a little history. The Maya s keel was laid down on December 4th, 1928 at the Kawasaki ship yard. She was launched on November 8th, She was feet long, with a beam of 62.3 feet. She had an original displacement of 9850 tons and a draft of 20 feet. I say original because from December 1943 to April 1944 she underwent a massive refit which effectively changed her from a ship to ship heavy cruiser to an anti-aircraft cruiser. After the refit, her displacement ballooned to 13,350 tons which dropped her draft to 21 feet. Her No. 3 8-inch (200 mm) turret was removed. Her twinmount 25 mm AA guns, 4.7-inch (120 mm) dual purpose guns, twin torpedo tube mounts and the seaplane hangar were also removed. With substantial weight saved, thirteen Type 96 triple-mount 25 mm AA guns and six twin 5-inch (127 mm) dual next meeting August 3 Photo by tommy kortman Theme Contest: Viva La France Program: IPMS National Convention Slide Show by Mike Turco purpose guns were installed, as were nine Type 96 singlemount 25 mm AA guns and 36 Type mm MGs. Four Type 92 quadruple torpedo mounts, loaded with 16 Type 93 continued on page 10 Visit the DVSM website:

2 Presidents Corner by Bob Doebley & Tommy Kortman Hello Fellow Styrene Junkies! missed the August meeting I because I was on vacation. What I was told by Tommy you had a good meeting. I saw the pictures on his Fotki site. There were a lot of models on display. Congrats to Bob Cicconi on winning the monthly theme contest. We only have only four months until the the club zombie build contest. This should be a great draw for the contest. It seem that everywhere you look zombies have caught everyones attention. For the car model guys Revell will be bring out the 1950 Olds coupe at the end of the September. Well that s it for this month. Heeeere ss Tommy! Thanks Bob and welcome back. Bob was correct, we did have a pretty good meeting last month. We had 10 models in the theme contest, which is a good turnout. And, as our esteemed president has already stated, the contest was won by Rear Admiral Cicconi-san. Bob (Cicconi) builds some incredibly well detailed ships. What makes them so incredible is not the detail so much as the amount of, and quality workmanship of the build and details in such a small scale (1/700). If you have a chance, take a look at the photos either on the DVSM Facebook page at pages/delaware-valley-scale- Modelers/ , or my Fotki page, El-Tanque/dvsm-meetings/dvsm While we re discussing photos, I had the pleasure of seeing Uncle Upcoming events: Sept. 9: Super September Showdown #XIII, Gilbertsville Pa Sept. 15: PennCon, Carlisle Pa com/penncon/penncon.html Sept : AMPS East, Danbury Ct. org/ampseast/ampseast.htm Bobby s vacation photos. It looks like he had a great trip. Man, that s got to be a HUGE ship! I honestly thought I was looking at a hotel building in one of the photos. This month s theme is Vive La France, so I am hoping we get a good showing on the theme table. This month might be a great oppertunity for someone to sneak away with a win because of the odd theme. You guys need to use some thought on this one. There may be more subjects out there than you think. I know the car guys were sweating it, but I know that there are models of Citroens, Renaults, and Peugeots out there. Hopefully, now that the summer vacations are over, we will be seeing some long lost faces back at the meetings. It s about time to get into the fall contest season, so we should have some show reports coming in the next couple of months. Just a few more things before I lat you go for the month. Remember to check out the Winner s Circle column for more info on Bob Cicconi s theme winning model. Next month s theme (October) is?. This will be for prototypes and concept vehicles. It will also be for fantasy and sci-fi subjects. And finally, please search your minds, and try and come up with some programs for the meetings. Our club has got some of the most talented modelers on the east coast, we should have no problem coming up with ideas for a monthly how-to program. That is all, we now return you to your regularly scheduled program already in progress. n Monthly Theme Contests Every month we will have an open contest for the monthly themes. Members will vote for the best Theme model of the month. A personalized award plaque will be made by Mike Napoleon and presented at the following meeting. 10 Winner s Circle: Bob Cicconi s IJN Cruiser Maya Continued from page Theme Contest Point Standings to Date Long Lance torpedoes, were also fitted, as well as a type 22 surface-search radar. A centerline depth charge rail is also installed aft. The Maya saw action throughout WWII. She was present for the invasion of the Philippines in 1941, was part of the chase for Adm. Halsey s task force after the Doolittle raid. In June1942 she covered the invasion of the Aleutian Islands and by August 42 she is in the Eastern Solomon Islands. The Maya was damaged in November 42 off Guadalcanal when two Douglas SBD Dauntless dive-bombers of VB-10 arrive from their search sector to the south. About 0930, one of them piloted by Ensign P. M. Halloran and his rear-gunner Earl Gallagher drops a 500-lb bomb astern of Maya, but their SBD s starboard wing strikes Maya s mainmast and the plane crashes into her portside and ignites 4.7-inch shells. Thirty-seven crewmen are killed. The Maya s final battle occurred in October 1944 during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. On October 23rd, at 05:55 the submarine USS Dace (SS-247) fired six torpedoes at the Maya, mistaking it for a Kongo-class battleship; the Maya was struck by four torpedoes portside: one in the forward chain locker, another opposite No. 1 gun turret, a third in No. 7 boiler room and the last in the aft engine room. Powerful secondary explosions followed immediately, and by 06:00 Maya was dead in the water and listing heavily to port. She sank five minutes later, taking 336 officers and men to the bottom, including her last captain. The Akishimo rescued 769 men, and transferred them to the battleship Musashi, which was sunk the following day; 143 of Maya s crewmen were lost with Musashi. Thus, from the final crew of 1,105 crewmen, 479 were lost. Bob s model was built it mostly out of the box, but he used Gold Medal Ultra railings and other PE parts, such as the crane and catapults. Bob sprayed it with Testors paints and rigged it with stretched sprue. Bob says, It s a very nice kit and easy to build. Well Bob, once again you have produced another mini masterpiece. 11 2012 Jersey Fest Fair by Tony Wootson The Jersey Fest Fair Show took place on Friday and Saturday, August 3rd and 4th. What a Blast of a show!! This show originated in the consciousness of Dave Tomarchio. For years, Dave had been inviting fellowminded brothers and sisters of the resin, vinyl and styrene over his house for a fun-filled, model building, hanging-out party. His guests would arrive sometime during the morning. They would congregate in Dave s large cellar, show off their latest works of 3-dimensional art, and roll up their sleeves to work on their modeling projects. They would take a break to eat, and his party would usually end with the showing of a classic horror movie sometime during the evening hours. (Sometimes, some of his guests would end up spending the night, waiting until the next day to return home). It s this type of passion and love for the hobby which prompted Dave to take his Jersey Fest Fair on the road, opening it up to the public. This year s show took place at Rider University. Although the main emphasis of the show (with vendors and a model contest) was on Saturday, it actually began that Friday at 10 am. The show started with painting seminars by Steve Parke (Painting skin tones) and Rick Cantu (Painting a life-size Alien Bust). Following a lunch, the attendees participated in a painting class, where they painted their own life-size Curse of the Werewolf busts, (with the guidance of Saul Alvarez and Jim Capone). Although Friday s program was scheduled to end at 6:30, it ended running into the evening hours, (with many of the participants completing their busts during the class). Saturday s show was an actionpacked, adrenaline pumping modeling event. I ended up going in with Dan G., who was selling his O.D. G. Studio bases. (I brought some airbrushes, videos and vintage models to sell). My son, Anthony, and I arrived at the show quite early. (He had been hired as one of the staff, and needed to be there early, to start helping the vendors move their items). Our very own Tommy ended up manning a Del Val-Club promoting table, which Dave had kindly supplied. continued on page 12

12 Jersey Fest Continued from page 11 Some other club members who were in attendance were Paul T., Vinnie B., Joe S. and Paul K. There were even sightings of former club members Craig Bennett and Chris Dorey. The programs conducted on Saturday were Painting a Gillman (by Rick Cantu), Painting a Frankenstein (by Ray Santoleri), Painting Life-Sized Eyes (by Steve Parke), Creating a Giant Monster Diorama (by Mike Wallace), and Sculpting Tips & Slideshows by John Dennett and Mark Vantine. The model contest had some really nice pieces. The emphasis was more on figures and busts, with a smattering of vehicles. I ended up taking 5 of my models for the contest, along with 3 of Paul s (for display). I actually won a Bronze for one of my entries, and Paul won a Bronze as well (even though his had been entered for display only ). There was a great variety of items the vendors were selling, ranging from vehicle and figure kits, busts, figure collectables, comic books, magazines and tools. I picked up 2 Wonder Women figures, (which had eluded me at this year s Wonderfest Show). There was even a surprise visit from Gotham s Super Car. All-in-all, I had a fantastic time at this year s Jersey Fest Fair Show, (and I have an on-line report to show it). For more details, you can go to: In addition, you can check out the Jersey Fest Fair website, at: n 2012 IPMS Nationals Report by Mike Turco Even though it was hot, humid, and stormy almost every evening, it was a great time in Florida at the Nats. I rented a mini-van and loaded it with well-packed and cushioned models (1st priority) and the family (2nd priority) and headed down I-95 Saturday morning, August 4. After a sleepover in Florence, South Carolina, we arrived at the Disney Contemporary Resort Hotel Sunday evening. Too many large-scale models required two bell hops, three luggage carts, and some hefty tip money to get all the stuff into the room. (I ve gotta start building smaller stuff). Two days of messing around Disney World was enough for me until the convention started on Wednesday. The family got six-day passes to the parks, I settled for two half days. Special hotel rates for the convention, $129/night convention rate vs. the $330/night normal rate, eased the pain of the required cash flow, which, for those who haven t been to Disney World, rivals the throughput of the Hoover Dam. I jumped in with both feet and volunteered to help with the convention. I spent 2½ hours registering models the first day, built by modelers from all over the hemisphere, and 5½ hours helping collect and process the judging results on Friday night. I met some great folks, won an award and a couple raffles, had a model photographed by Fine Scale Modeler, saw a few familiar faces, and spent time and money in the two extensively stocked vendor rooms that can best be described as modelers heaven. Be at the September 7 DVSM meeting if you want to see what this was all about. Since a picture is worth a thousand words, instead of a long written report, I took a lot of photos and put together a slide presentation. I will bring a projector to the meeting and, with the consent of the club officers, we can all get a 45-minute or so look at the locale, the convention and, most importantly, some of the 2,900+ models at this year s big event. n
