1 Delaware Valley Scale Modelers / chapter ipms usa Newsletter The Winners Circle Best of Show! p h o t o s co u r t e s y Bob Cicconi s HMS Exeter by Tommy Kortman This month s column is not on one of the theme contest winners. This month we will take a look at some Heavy Metal. By that I mean this month we will look at a gold medal winner from Del-Val s annual Gold Silver Bronze contest. Oh and by the way it also took home the Best of Show award. This little (1/700) gem is the work of Del-Val s own Shipwright, Mr. Bob Cicconi. Bob has been building models almost his entire life. According to Bob he started with 1/72 scale aircraft, but has also built armor and the occasional 1/24-1/25 scale racecar. About 5 or 6 years ago Bob started building 1/700 scale waterline ships. Bob says that he likes the diversity of available subjects to model, as well as the fact that the finished kits don t require you to add an addition to your house just to store and display them. While Bob now builds and enjoys the little gray navy, he will still pop out the occasional aircraft or racecar. Bob s forte is usually the ships from the Pre-Dreadnaught era through the end of WWII, but a group build for Cold War ships through 1991 on Modelwarships.com piqued Bob s interest as it might be a fun diversion from my normal subject matter. The kit is the plastic 1/700 Pit Road/Skywave model of a Type 42 Batch 2 British Destroyer. While there were numerous ships in that class, Bob chose the Exeter (D-89) as she appeared in The Exeter saw service in the Falklands War shooting down three Argentine aircraft, deploying to the area from the Caribbean after the start of the British invasion operations to replace the HMS Sheffield. Early in her first commission, Bob Ci c c o n i Exeter had a turquoise hull on and below the waterline; this was an experimental co-polymer paint which was only available in a few non-standard colours at the time. The lightblue Boot-Topping visible on the waterline was eventually repainted to standard brick red/black during her first docking period, post the Falklands War The Exeter also served in Operation Granby, during the 1991 Gulf War, under the command of Captain Nigel Essenhigh. Among her roles was the continued on page 4 next meeting July 1 Theme Contest: That 70s Show! Visit the DVSM website, including our classified section:

2 Presidents Corner by Bob Doebley & Tommy Kortman Hello Fellow Styrene Junkies! The June Gold, Silver and Bronze contest was a success. I like to thank Tommy Kortman for a great job running another great contest. Congratulations to everyone who entered the June contest. There were a lot of great builds on the contest tables. That surely made it difficult to judge with so great models on display. Congratulations also to Bob Cicconi on his best of show win with his 1/700 scale HMS Exeter. Bob builds some wonderful little gems with those ships and his win is well deserved. Look for more info in Tommy s Winner s circle article. It was nice to see Jason Rothgeb make the meeting. We all missed his great sense of sick humor. Thanks to Jamie for bringing him out. Jersey-Con Update: I would like to thank Bob Cicconi on getting the club display tables at the up coming Jersey-Con. Joe and crew are making great progress on the club display builds and are still scheduled to be completed on time for the show. I can not wait to see the displays. Joe Leonetti has written an article about his trip to the Reading Air Show WWII weekend. Be sure to check it out elsewhere in the newsletter. This is the 4th of July weekend so have a safe one and enjoy the holiday whatever you are doing or wherever you are going. Remember to drive safely, and to buckle up. The cops will be out in force. On a personal note: I will be taking a mini vacation over the July 4th weekend so I will be unable to attend the July meeting. I know that Tommy K will do a great job filling in for me. See you at the August meeting. Now let s see what Tommy has for this month. Thanks Bob. I hope you have a great vacation, but a little more advanced notice would have been better. I hope I can do as good a job as you have. Well, at least it shouldn t be boring. Now that the annual GSB contest is over with, I d like to offer some thanks of my own to a few people. First, to our editor-in-chief, John Goschke. John takes time from his busy schedule to make sure that we have all the printed material we need for the contests. I d also like to thank the members who acted as judges this year. Uncle Bobby, John Goschke, Mike Napoleon, Nick Sandone, Lou Isern, and Jamie Makin. Some of you have done this a few times before for me, and this was the first time I have volunteered a couple of you. You all did a wonderful job. Thanks again! Finally I d like to give an extra thanks to Joe Leonetti for helping me get the event organized this year. I was a little out of sorts before the meeting, and Joe s help was invaluable. I guess that means that it s time to re-start the theme contests. The first theme for the second half of the year is That 70s Show. I think the theme is pretty self-explanatory, but for those of you who have been using model glue in an unventilated room for way too long, this theme is for anything from the decade of the 1970 s. That would be from 1970 to 1979 inclusive. The point s race is pretty close as usual. Paul Kopczynski is out front with 13 points, followed closely behind by John Goschke with 12 points. Last year s champion, Greg Hogg is in third with 11 points, and the two Lou s (Isern and Ursino) are right behind them with 10 points each. Folks, this is a close contest. It is designed to be. Remember that we give a point just for putting a model on the table. I know that most of you have got to have subject matter that fits this month s theme, so please bring it out and fill the table. Who knows, this months winner could be you. That s all for now; let s take a look at what s happening this month. n July Events July 1-3: 148th Anniversary Gettysburg Reenactment: gettysburgreenactment.com/ July 2: 10th Annual Cool Summer Nights car Franklin Mills Mall 2pm to 8pm July 4: Freedom Blast at Fort Mifflin com/philadelphia-pa/events/ details/ freedom-blast July 8-10: The 1st State Nationals: Dover Downs Speedway. 4 Bob Cicconi s HMS Exeter from page 1 air defense of the US battleships bombarding enemy positions. She attended the 25th anniversary commemorations of the Falklands War at Newquay, Cornwall in 2007, as the last remaining Royal Navy ship in commission to have served in the Falklands. On 30 July 2008, she was placed in a state of Extended Readiness at HMNB Portsmouth, until being decommissioned there on 27 May In early 2010 Exeter was in use as a training hulk to assist with the training of new naval base tugs. Bob s build utilizes a photoetch detail set from White Ensign Models. It definitely adds a lot of realism to the build. The ship is painted in some of this author s favorite paint; Floquil Railroad colors. The hull and superstructure are finished in SP (Southern Pacific) Lettering Gray, while the decks are painted in SP Lark Dark Gray. Engine Black was used for the upper mainmast, and Reefer White was used for the top of the foremast. The helicopter is painted with Testors IJN Underside Gray, with the rotors painted in Floquil Grimy Black. Decals for both the helicopter and ship are from Hawk/Resin Shipyard. The rigging, which has got to be one of the things that really sets Bob s models apart from the rest of the fleet, is stretched sprue. Mr. Cicconi chose not to weather this particular ship. Finally, the flag is from a flag sheet by Tauro Models. This is an amazing model and well deserved of the awards it has won. Congratulations Mr. Cicconi, job well done. Next month we will be back to spotlighting the winning model from this month s theme contest. Good Luck to all the competitors. n

5 World War II Weekend by Joe Leonetti photos by the author B-29 Superfortress Fifi was among the classic warbirds featured at the Reading show Ely-Curtiss Pusher biplane opened the weekend s flying demonstrations. Reading, PA One thing that I look forward to each year is the Mid-Atlantic Air Museum s World War Two weekend held at the Carl A. Spaatz Field in Reading, Pennsylvania. Generally, the Museum is a 7-day per week visitor attraction that provides speakers, tour guides, educational services to the community, works with the Civil Air Patrol and other educational organizations, and participates in a variety of other educational activities. But on the first weekend in June something really special happens, in fact the editors of Military Vehicles Magazine have called it The largest and best WWll reenactment in the nation bar none. This year s event, held from Friday June 3rd to Sunday June 5th involvedmore than 1,700 WWII military and civilian re-enactors and dozens of combat and support units, representing many nations. You could experience battles and skirmishes between the French Resistance, Allied and German troops around the battle-scarred French Village and stroll around the sprawling encampments and experience what life was like for our boys in the field. You could also visit the Pacific and European theaters, U.S. Navy, Marine, and Army, encampments, British Commonwealth forces, German Wehrmacht and Luftwaffe camps, and more. The reenactors were well versed on the details of their roles, and on their equipment and were willing to share their knowledge and pose for your camera. You could also examine their collections and displays of authentic weapons and gear close up. n Featured Guests at WW II Weekend Philip R.
