1 Delaware Valley Scale Modelers / chapter ipms usa Newsletter May 2012 Go Topless! April Meeting Theme Contest Winner Tangerine Dream by Nick Sandone The Winners Circle By Tommy Kortman Go Topless! Yep, that was the theme for the April contest. And this month s winner will give you the Willys Literally. (I know, bad joke couldn t help it) Nick Sandone won the April theme contest with a 41 Willys roadster. Now Nick is generally known for some wild paint schemes and combinations, and his latest creation does not disappoint. Nick calls it Tangerine Dream. This five-month build started with a roadster transkit from RMR Resin. The kit came with body, dashboard, door panels, and trunk separator. Nick then had to acquire a Plymouth Prowler kit for the donor windshield. He wanted to use the Wheels & tires from the AMT Rambler snap kit. He was lucky to find a set and purchased them from a Facebook friend, Tom Nungster. Because he was now using Photo by Tommy kortman wider wheels and tires, Nick had to purchase a resin chassis from Perry s resin that would accommodate the steamroller sized rolling stock. Once he had all the parts, it was time for a test fitting. Surprisingly, everything fit very well. So well indeed that Nick was ready to start the bodywork and painting. The only body modifications were frenching the head and tail lights. Nick started the paint process with a heavy coat of gray automotive primer. Nick went with the heavy coat to aid in smoothing out any imperfections in the resin body. He estimates that about 80% of the primer eventually got sanded off. He then applied two normal coats of Tamiya White primer. Nick wet sanded the finish between primer coats. White primer is used so that the color coats have their truest color and brightest finish. For the color coat, Nick chose House of Kolor (HoK) Tangelo Pearl. Because Nick continued on page 9

2 Presidents Corner by Bob Doebley & Tommy Kortman Hello Fellow Styrene Junkies! We had a good turnout for the April meeting, we had a couple of new members join the club and Bob Cicconi brought a visitor with him. (Sorry I forgot his name) Hope everyone who went to MosquitoCon had a good time and brought home trophies. At the May meeting Tony Wootson will be holding an air brush painting seminar. This looks like it will be very successful. If you plan on doing the seminar please bring a roll of paper towels, an airbrush and compressor. At April s meeting there were a lot of great models on the tables. As I have said before we have great builders in this club and I look forward to our monthly meetings and checking the tables out. If anyone went to MosquitoCon could you please give us an update? News from the Air & Space Museum. The space shuttle Discovery is the centerpiece of the James S. Theme Contest: Italia OK boys and girls, Uncle Bobby has given us another wonderful, short, column again this month. It s OK, we understand the pressure he s under. Anyway, it s late as I write this, and the pillow is calling my name, so I ll dispense with the chit chat and get right to it. Last month s theme contest winner was Nick Sandone. Nick built a fantastic 41 Willys roadster. I have written a more in depth piece on this model Monthly Clinic: Airbrushing by Tony Wootson elsewhere in this newsletter. This car was photographed at NNL East this year by Scale Auto Magazine, and has already been featured in the show coverage on Scale Auto s website com/en/how%20to%20and%20models/ Online%20Exclusives/2012/04/NNL%20 East% aspx Also featured on the Scale Auto site are friends of ours, John White (member of the Jersey Shore Model Car Club) and Carlos DeJesus, who came up from Puerto Rico for the event. A quick run down of the points reveals that we currently have a tie for first with both Dennis Levy and Paul Tomczak having 10 points apiece. There is also a tie for 3rd between Greg Hogg and Nick Sandone. Both of them have 8 points. It looks like it s going to be another close, year long, battle. For a complete rundown, see the table later in the news letter. This month s theme is Italia any Italian subject matter is allowed. This would include any subject with Italian markings. The turnout on the table has been great again this year. What has not though is the voting. It seems that we are only getting about 30% to 40% of the people at the meeting voting. I just want to remind everyone that if you are at the meeting, you can vote. As Bob stated, a bunch of us attended NNL East #26 last month, and if anyone is interested, I have posted some photos from the event on my Fotki site. 6 Report from WrightCon 2012 IPMS Region IV Regional Convention, Hope Hotel & Conference Center, Wright Patterson AFB, Dayton, OH, April 13-14, 2012 By Mike Turco The Wright Field Scale Modelers, a club that is less than two years old, hosted their first show and it was a big one, the IPMS Region 4 Regionals. The result was over 700 models displayed, the best vendor kit selection at any show I ve seen, very well run raffles, plenty of good food, and a venue, at least for the airplane guys, that can t be beat, with the National USAF Museum right down the road. All things considered, this young club did a fine job. For a while I ve wanted to do an 8th Air Force display/ collection as my dad was a veteran of that outfit. Late last year I got the incentive I needed when I learned of the WrightCon event and its contest theme Turning Points: 19X2. Any model representing a significant point in a year ending in 2 qualified for the Best Theme award. Doolittle Raid B-25, carrier Hornet, Titanic, Cuban Missile Crisis and Midway ship or plane, etc., were possibles. I decided to make it 1942 when the Mighty Eighth was formed and sent to the UK to take on the Nazis. I d build a same-scale collection of the five primary combat planes of the Eighth Air Force. The race was on, five planes, five months. I finished (a relative term) the last plane the night before we left. Lauren, my 12-year-old daughter, accompanied me on the trip. She was on Easter break and we brought her Howard Ike that she showed at JerseyCon, along with the Mighty Eighth collection and a few other models I had built this past year. At first I was unsure of how much she would enjoy four days of traveling and a model show, but by the time we had to depart she didn t want to leave. She became very interested in the history of the wars of the 20th century, as I explained many of the exhibits and stories of pilots and their exploits while touring the Museum, from biplane pilots with no parachutes to nuclear weapons that can take out whole cities. She ate it up. We went to the Museum twice during the twoday stay. She is now looking forward to history class next year when they will cover this period. The show s raffles were conducted a little differently than usual. The buyer could place his or her tickets into separate bins in a rotating tumbler. Bins were marked Aircraft, Auto, Armor, etc. so you could select your preferred category or categories. One winner was picked each hour from each of the different categories, plus one overall Special category for larger prizes. Although you didn t get to choose the particular prize from the category as they were premarked, if you were a car guy you could put all or most of your tickets into the Auto bin so if you won you d get a prize from that group. With Lauren, my good luck charm, we won The Region IV Convention was held at Wright Patterson Air Force base, home of the USAF Museum. two raffles, and a woman who won a couple aircraft decal sets she couldn t use gave them to us. She only wanted WWIrelated stuff. I thanked her profusely. Now I ll have to build an F/A-18 and another B-17G. We went to an excellent seminar on airbrushing. The presenter talked about a Paasche turbine-powered airbrush that was patented in 1905 and still works. Revving to 20,000 rpm, it sounds like a dentist s drill when it runs. He modeled a couple of German planes (1/72-scale Bf109 and FW 190) with their unique camo patterns and described how he airbrushed those using highly thinned paints and multiple coats. They were terrific. He also had high praise for Gunze Sangyo paints. Iwata and Grex had airbrushing sales tables with demos for anyone who wanted to try out their latest and greatest airbrushes and compressors. Both companies market very quiet compressors with an on-demand feature where the compressor turns on and off automatically to hold a constant pressure setting while you airbrush. The Iwata compressor s air tank is the handle. The Grex compressor was smaller and quieter but I wouldn t refuse either one. The Grex Tritium double-action, trigger-style airbrush was really nice. You hold it more like a gun and pull the trigger back. Instead of pressing down on a button and moving the button back and forth, pulling the trigger starts the air flow, and then as you pull the trigger back further you feel a spring action and the paint starts. You get real nice control of the paint with only one movement, i.e., the trigger moving in and out. It also features side-mounted gravity feed cups, which you can rotate so that regardless of the hand position, the cup can stay vertical to the ground to avoid spillage. While we were watching a few guys trying out the new

7 Grex, my daughter asked if she could try it as she never used an airbrush. So we got in line. We watched one fellow then another spatter paint on an easel until they got the hang of it. I tried it next and made a few fine swirls and felt real proud of myself. Then we all stood around while the little novice took it and, without breaking a sweat, proceeded to write a few words, then swirls, then designs... We all just waved our arms and walked away laughing and shaking our heads. Overall, the quality of the displayed models was excellent. There were fewer armor and ship models than in the northeastern shows I ve been to, but aircraft, cars and sci-fi were big. Judging was closed, i.e., no one was allowed in the display rooms during judging, and it took about 3-1/2 hours to complete. Modelers from outside the Wright Field club did the rankings. Mike s The Mighty Eighth display of Eighth Air Force aircraft won the Best in Theme award and Silver in Collections. Models included a very large, lighted Nautilus modeled as the submarine from the Disney movie along with plenty of Star Wars (another Theme category) and sci-fi figures. There was a very realistic head of a spotted leopard in the figure section that looked as if it could have come off the wall of a big game hunter. A female sci-fi figure in a futuristic battle suit, or pod, won a Best-of Class award. A 72 Ford Torino stock car took the best Auto award. There were some really great openwheel builds of newer 1/6th scale F1 kits and a highly detailed, mostly scratch-built 1931 Alfa Romeo race car that took a special award. Another award category was Group Builds. The Wright Field club did a Midway collection as a group build. It included three aircraft carriers, and US Navy and Japanese planes on a special display that was very nicely done. At the opposite end of the Lauren s 1/48th spectrum, another Howard Ike racing group did just one plane earned her a car, a mid-60 s Impala Silver award in the I think, with one Youth category. individual doing the chassis, another doing the engine, another the body, etc. It was real nice. In a turnabout for me, my Ferrari 312T and Shelby Mustang didn t even place. But we hit it big with the aircraft. Given the large number of categories, only the Special Awards were announced, while the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place awards were not. Instead, gold, silver or bronze medallions were placed on each model to be checked by the modelers after the Special Awards announcements and the display rooms were reopened. There were 24 Special Awards to be presented, including all the Best-ofs and two Theme Awards. It was at the end of the announcements that a minor SNAFU took place. Over a microphone from a hotel podium, one by one the awards were made. They gave out 23 Special Awards and announced that that was it. It was time to go to the model rooms and check on the rest of the winners. Uh-oh. What about the other Theme Award? The one I had worked on for five months? I asked the club president why it wasn t announced and they checked the award summary sheet. It was blank next to the Turning Points award. Someone forgot to fill it in! They quickly retrieved the judge s sheet. After a very long 30 seconds, the 24th award was announced. The Mighty Eighth won the Best of Theme. Lauren and I then hustled over to the room where the Youth and Collections models were displayed. Among the ten or so Youth-category models, Lauren found a Silver for her Ike. She was thrilled. The Ike held up well against the competition. She s more psyched now than ever about building her next model. The Mighty Eighth also took Silver for the Collections category behind a real nice Desert Storm armor collection. (The table below lists the awards we brought home.) All in all, it was a great trip with my best little modeling friend. It qualifies as a once-in-a-lifetime memory. n Region IV Results for DVSM Representatives Lauren & Mike Turco Category award Model(s) approx. # in Category Youth (12 and under) Silver Howard Ike, 1/48th Testors (Hawk) kit 10 Aircraft, Classic Kits (over 25 yrs old) Bronze Air Power, /240th Monogram kit 10 Aircraft, Paper & Other Materials Silver XF-91 Thunderceptor, 1/72nd Planet resin kit 3 Motorcycles, all scales Gold 1981 Honda CB-750F, 1/6th Tamiya kit 6 Collections (5 or more related) Silver The Mighty Eighth 5 Theme Turning Points Best of Theme The Mighty Eighth unknown

8 NNL-East 2012 Report By Bob Doebley Ted Chopper Lear s land speed record streamliner built from model aircraft wheel spats was a sensation even in it s in-progress state. Photo by Bob Doebley. A partial view of the jam-packed vendor hall at the NNL East. Photo by Tommy Kortman. Well the 2012 NNL-East has come and gone. A group of us, Greg Hogg, Fernando Roman, Carlos De Jesus. Rogelio Mendez, Tommy K, Ariel Hernandez, Nick Sandone and yours truly, met up at Greg s house for our usual Thursday night before the NNL-East get together to kick off the NNL EAST weekend. We had a good time. Some people had off Friday but some of us had to work a half-day. Friday came and we traveled up to the Ramada Inn in Wayne NJ, the official hotel of the NNL-EAST. After Mike and I checked into our room we made our way to Cheeseburger in Paradise for some liquid refreshments and food. We met up with Greg, Tommy, Nick and his wife Sharon, and later Bill and Jan Garner, along with Fernando, Carlos and Rogelio. This year it seemed that attending modelers did not want to come into Cheeseburger too early. After putting away some refreshments and food we strolled back to the room to take a little rest for round two later that night. We met Bill Stillwagon, Mike Hensley and Ted Chopper Lear. Chopper showed us his latest project, a Salt Flat racer. After a little relaxation we went for round two. John Stark and his lovely wife, St. Marge, were sitting at the bar. We met up with other modelers that we know. Unfortunately a few of our friends could not make the show this year. Since the crowd was light we behaved ourselves and even John Stark behaved himself. Saturday morning we made our way to the Wayne PAL for the show. By 9:00 Am when the doors opened the line stretched around to the back of the building. I did not go to this show last year so I was anxious to see all of the models and people I have met over the years. The tables filled up fast with great looking models and dioramas. I think that there were about 1200 models on the table. There were two rooms full of vendors. Mike Turco came to the show for the first time and left totally impressed and plans on coming back next year. I had a good time this year and am looking forward to next years show. I would like to congratulate Tommy Kortman for his winning the theme contest with his Boot Hill Express show rod. This was Tommy s second year in a row winning a plaque. This is DVSM s fifth year that a member has won at the NNL-East. n Tommy Kortman s Boot Hill Express was voted Best in Show for the Show Rod theme award. Photo by Tommy Kortman. 9 Tangerine Dream Willys Roadster by Nick Sandone continued from page 1 wanted a slightly deeper orange, he mixed in some HoK Neon Red and some HoK Snow White Pearl. Once the color coats were dry, Nick masked off the graphics and sprayed them with a Violet Pearl. Once the stripes had dried, Nick sanded the edges of the stripes to reduce the hard edge. The entire car was then shot with 2 coats of Eastwood 2 part Urethane clear. The first coat was a mist coat to seal the colors and the second coat was a heavy wet coat to achieve maximum gloss. While most Willys and most hot rods for that matter use the ubiquitous small block Chevy for the powerplant, Nick went a different route. After a suggestion from fellow club member, John Goschke, a 66 Buick Nailhead was chosen. The engine is fully wired and plumbed. Nick scratch built the radiator hoses. The engine also features photo-etched throttle linkage and aluminum air cleaners. Nick cut open the trunk to display the Model Car Garage fuel cell and the Detail Master NOS bottle and Optima Battery. A pull down video monitor was also added to the truck lid. The interior was finished with Scale Motorsports ten textured paint. Alclad was used on the steering wheel. Photo-etch was used throughout the interior. Nick added a P/E radio/cd player, ignition keys, dash vent grills and the hardware for the scratch built seat belts. Nick also added a photo-etch grille. Nick says that most of the five months off and on again build time was spent smoothing and prepping the body for paint. He is very happy with the result and says it came out pretty close to what he was shooting for. Well Nick, we d say you hit the nail on the head. Congratulations once again for putting out another winning model. (ed note: Since the April theme contest Nick s Willys was photographed by Scale Auto at NNL East and has been featured on Scale Auto s web site from their coverage of the show.) n 2012 Theme Contest Point Standings to Date Jan.
