1 PGMS Gazette Celebrating 100 Years of PG Welcome Back! And so the adventure begins!! New Faces on Campus O u r F i r s t D a y By: Destiny Abhulimen, Breynna Lundy, and Abbie Flournoy By: Peyton Mathews, Emma Sheets, and Addison Simmons Lots of new faces have shown up at PG Middle School... Coach Haynes Mrs.Nicholas The Hawks are off to a great start! Fall Sports By: Koby Trusty, Garrison Whiteside, and Harleigh O Nea l Coach Ladd Ms. Murphy Mrs. Stanfill Ms. Hughes Mrs. Langley Mrs. Hagood Study Tips By: Hannah Foster Students hard at work studying. Source for Tips training/ studying tips resources/top 10 study tips How do you think the school will do this year in sports? Coach Phillips said Hopefully we do good and that we will be competitive. How well do you think Cross Country will do this year? Coach Haynes said I think we ll do awesome. How long do you practice volleyball? Coach Cowling said that volleyball will practice up to 2 hours. What do you do to practice for cross country? We practice on different days, and we practice at 6:00 AM. We do speedwork and tempo run. How long have you coached volleyball? Coach Cowling has been coaching volleyball for 8 years. What made you want to coach football? Coach Ladd answered that it was because his father coached football and while he went to college to become a lawyer, he decided he wanted to coach football. I asked Mrs. Gibson about the first pep rally, and what is it like coaching the cheerleaders. The first pep rally is Homecoming and coaching the cheerleaders is fun. I enjoy teaching the routines Coach Haynes is the Cross Country Coach and I wondered What is it like coaching Cross Country? and he gave me the perfect answer. He said that coaching Cross Country (and he told me to quote him) It is great and I love it. Everyone s first day was fantastic! Some students had trouble opening their lockers, some did not. Most kids knew people that were already in middle school. Landon Smith (6th) was a little nervous, but he had lunch with a lot of his friends. Makinlee McDonald (6th) said Pre Athletics is super easy so far Lucy Woodman (7th) was asked what are you most excited for this year? Sports. We are glad to have the excellent coaches that are here to help us prepare for school sports. Sam Bradshaw (8th) said he is ready for high school and ready for sports this year. Lydia Colvin (7th) said My first day of school was exceptional, but it was difficult to find my classes. There are always teachers around to help kids get to classes on the first and second weeks. Seagan Powell (8th) is glad to be an 8th grader, because she feels like she is a great role model. Ms. Altenbaumer, who is the 6th grade Technology teacher, says I miss my 6th grade students from last year, but I think I have a great group of students this year. Eve Lynx (6th) had some trouble opening her locker on the first couple of tries, but about a week after, she got it. It s sad to say that the 8th graders had there last first day of Middle School. Overall we will have a great year here at The Grove! PGMS A great place to be! 1. Pick a time and place Everyone has their own ideal in which they can learn their best in. Whether it's in the library after school or in your bedroom at night, find a space and regular time that works for you and stick with it. Set up your study space Your study space should be relaxed, quiet, and distraction free. Find a time that suits you Some people are more focused during the morning. Others work better at night. Work out a time that fits you and plan to study then. Try not to study past your regular bedtime as pushing yourself late at night can make you too tired to study properly. 2. Study daily When you study regularly you ll be constantly reviewing everything in your head. This helps you understand things and avoids stress caused by late night cramming. Early in the year only an hour or two might be needed to keep ontop of things, but later in the year you might need to study more each day. Quiz yourself Get a friend or family member to quiz you over key points. Offer to help friends with their work and study together. Quizzes are a great way to understand what you know and what you need to review more on. Make study materials Making flash cards or practice questions can help you study. This way you learn it all twice: once when you make the study materials and once when you use them to revise. 3. FInd out what type of learner you are Everyone is different in the ways that we learn. Discover the way that is best for you to learn. Auditory learners learn by listening. If you re an auditory learner you could try reading your notes aloud and discussing them with other people. Visual learners learn by seeing. If you are a visual learner you could use colors in your notes and draw diagrams to help represent key points. 4. Take breaks It s important to take breaks while studying, especially if you're feeling frustrated or tired. Overworking yourself can be counterproductive. When taking your break try to get away from your study spot. A bit of physical activity can help clear your head and think of a problem differently. 5. Ask for help If a question doesn't seem to make sense or you get stuck, you can always ask for help. Talk to a teacher about the things you don t understand or ask a friend to help.
2 Test Taking Tips By: Kelsey Clark & Kennedy Washington Do you sweat, chew your pencil, or feel butterflies in your stomach as your teacher hands out a test? A lot of people (adults included) get freaked out when it's time to take a test. It s natural to feel some stress about taking test or quizzes. In fact, a little adrenaline is a good thing to jump start you! First, be sure you have studied properly. It sounds like a no-brainer, but if you re sure of the information you ve been given to study, you ll have less reason to be worried. Get enough sleep the night before! You memory recall will be much better if you have had plenty of rest! In a scientific study, people who got enough sleep the night before taking a math test scored higher than those who stayed up all night studying. Listen closely to any instructions. As the teacher hands out a test be sure you know what is expected of you. Tips for Getting Organized By: Kelsey Clark Getting organized is not a hard daily task! It is actually proven to help your stress level and help you think clearer! Try to have what you are wearing laid out the night before the day you wear it. It helps you not to rush to find something to wear and lets you have a less stressful morning! Have a separate folder for homework. When you come out of each class you can just stick it in your folder and not worry about losing it before you get home to do it. Pack your lunch the night before. Maybe even pack your snacks and chips the night before and make your sandwich in the morning so it s fresh. Have a set time for homework every night, so you can get in a routine knowing you have homework to do! L u n c h P o l l By: Sadie Coleman and McKinley MacBride As you can see in the graph below, in a survey of two classes, the most common lunch is a lunchbox/sack lunch. Don t make uneducated guesses. Always answer the easy questions first so you have more time to figure out the hard questions. One the night before, take a practice test to see what you need to work on. Check over your work before you turn it in. School Goals By: Marci Clayton, Sarah Johnson, Jazz Moses What sports are you wanting to tryout for in 7th grade? Abby Walker 6th - Track Jaxon Clement 6th - Track Stone Robertson 6th - Football,Cross Country & Track Adison Koller 6th - Cheer & Volleyball (Band) What is one song you are wanting to learn in 6th grade?
