Pledge by Stephanie Yee, Song Leader: Peter Issa, with Jingle Bells and Inspiration by John Hernandez. The Kiwanis Choir san Happy Birthday to President Donna, Peter Issa, Stephanie Yee and Christine Elia. Raffle winner was Eric Harris but no joker. The 50/50 winner was Gary Duperron. Birthdays - Peter Issa, Stephanie Yee & Christine Elia MEETING NOTES & ANNOUNCEMENTS: Tony Molino introduced our guests Division 19 Lt. Gov. Al Hoagland and his wife Victoria. Al brought us Division 19 pins to proudly wear when we are doing Division 19 volunteering. LTG Al thanked Lisa Applegate for chairing Division 19 s day to feed the volunteers decorating Rose Parade Floats. Lisa thanked Connie Horstkotte, Kevin Paul, Tony Goorchenko, Tony Molino, and Laurie Love for helping. Tony Molino introduced Bobbie Manticus who helped Barbara Molino buy and wrap all the presents for the Stork Club visit that was today. The Stork Club is a safe place for Moms that are getting their lives back together. We brought toys for 18 kids and their faces lit up when they received their gifts. Tony Goorchenko thanked this weekends Salvation Army bell ringers: Tony Molino, Donna Duperron, Kevin Paul and daughter Cassandra, Kim Smith, Cathy Towers, Laurie Love, Harvey Horwich, Dolores Lyttle, and Past LT. Gov. Liberty Thyme. Tony did not thank himself but he was there also. Program Speaker and Program: Pastor Glen Moore recognized our November and December Shery High School students of the month and their counselor and motivator Terry Hughes. Terry shared that both students are hard workers and will be going back to West High School in February. Teddy Phuthanhdanh, who is fluent in French, will be going to France after graduation to attend driving school. Teddy races cars and wants to be a stunt car driver. Desiree Moore is a dancer and practices 3 hours a day. She plans to study psychology in college and is attending cosmetology school at SCROC. 2 Page 2 TEAM KIWANIS THANKS: President Donna handed out several thank you gifts all with a race car theme to the club members that have been working on different projects this month: Stephanie Yee for organizing the Toys for the Troops Kids and making everyone a beautiful stocking. Everything you do is incredible. Manny Claus Sousa for being Santa at the hospital and at Sunday s party. You were marvelous! We can always count on you to be a terrific Santa. Gayle CdeBaca for the awesome job as treasurer. Tony Molino for organizing the Stork Club visit and delivering toys to the Bases. Christine Elia, Tammie Hedland, Linda Amato for the extra efforts collecting toys. Michael Norris for being an awesome Kiwanis member thanks for all you do. Tony Goorchenko for coordinating bell ringing and the DCM. Laurie Love, Steve Hemingway, Cathy Towers, and Connie Horstkotte for volunteering at the Middle School Leadership Conference. 3 Page 3 Over 500 toys, games, balls and gifts were delivered to Los Alamitos Joint Forces Training Base Family Assistance Center to be delivered to the Kids of soldiers that are deployed overseas. Kiwanians, Brownies, North High Basketball Team, Sherry High & Guests with toys for troops Kids (Back row) Dr. Grant Litfin, Principal North High School Team mom Tammie, Coach Gary Duperron, players Terrell Urquide and Brandon Yamada Toys for the Troops Kid s was made possible with the help of the following people & organizations: Coach Gary Duperron and representatives from the North High School basketball program brought the 270 toys they collected. Team Mom Tammie explained that they had a contest between the 4 levels of the basketball program to see who could bring the most toys with the winners getting a free practice and a pizza party. Stephanie Yee had the employees at The Doubletree Hotel bring toys. Each toy earned them a raffle ticket for prizes. They also put a box in their lobby and many guests contributed toys. Christine Elia s, First Federal Bank, donated toys in lieu of their annual gift exchange. John Clark from the Lawndale Kiwanis Club joined us with toys. Special Brownie Elves Barbara and Sophia Molino, Holly and Jamie Mayvar, and Bobbie and Katherine Manticus were here to help deliver toys to the troops. John Hernandez with Toy donations and a van to help deliver the toys. We also receive toys from other Kiwanis Clubs in Division 19 including, Eastview, Gardena Valley, Hawthorne, Hermosa Beach, Lawndale, Lomita-Harbor City, Rolling Hills Est. and Redondo Beach. Former Gardena Kiwanians Kathy & Terry Wood for a cash donation that allowed us to go out and buy additional toys. Tony Molino led a 5 car caravan from Torrance. Each car was stuffed with toys as they made the 22 mile trip to Los Alamitos Joint Forces Training Base. The other cars had Brownie Mom s Barbara Molino, Holly Mayvar, Bobbie Manticus and Juliet Zamel. With Double Tree employees Stephanie Yee and Obed and the last car with Dennis Whally from New Challenge Ministries.

Christine Elia Great party Donna, we have a lot to be thankful for. Jennifer Frew - Happy Holidays to everyone, to be here Missing Donna s party due to a migraine headache. Tony Goorchenko Taking Richardson s Builders Club to the Pacific Inn to carol and PTA is paying for the bus. Kay Grundhaus - The party at Donna s, her grandkids had a great time and that Gary let her 12-year-old granddaughter sing with the band. Eric Harris High School kids donating Toys for the Troops, appreciates it because his brother is in the Army and his daughter really misses him. Steve Hemingway Tomorrow is his 25 th wedding anniversary,, everyone does so much in this Club, Oklahoma beating the Gators but Art will still be his friend. John Hernandez The people from North High that are here. Dave Holper The season, family will be together, may bring them next week, for our youth and especially Shery HS, and thanks for our support of the THS takeover last week. When he growing up his family did not have much and they were many times the family receiving, recognizes the importance is in the giving. Laurie Love The generosity and giving of the season. Michael Norris 20 $ for our guests, especially the kids, used to coach football and it is not getting knocked down but about getting up, thank you Gayle for bringing your brother to the meeting, they now have the most beautiful living tree, was able to arrange the Normandie Casino for our tournament since Hollywood Park is not going to work this year and they are going to give us their show room, thank you coach and his wife for Sunday, and spoke words of encouragement to Teddy in French. Kevin Paul The great party and Cassandra getting to experience volunteering. Pam Ryan It is hard to be a teacher, thank you to our guests. Manny Sousa - 20 $ Amazing what this club can do, since being President it has given him a giving feeling that has caught on with his business and family. Cathy Towers Great party! Stephanie Yee Thank you to everyone for today, we collected 850 toys Being late to the party on Sunday but had to work, and for a co-worker who lost her 13 month old son. Bob Zappelli Great Christmas party, our great members, Gary is a better musician than Donna. Guests: Tammie Hegland - 5$ to meet the Duperron s, especially Donna. Gary Duperron - Opportunity to help with Toys for Our Troops, competition was neat, excited Donna is ½ way through her time being president. Terry Hughes - Being here, with great kids Coming on Thursday last month. Linda Amato - To be here Sad event with one of their employees. Grant Litfin - Opportunity to brag about NHS besides their efforts with Toys for Our Troops, they collected 15,963 cans for their food drive, appreciates our work for the troops as his brother is a Marine, and the generosity of the season.
6 Page 6 KIWANIS HOLIDAY PARTY: Donna and Gary Duperron hosted the Holiday Party at their home last Sunday. Plenty of great food, live music with Gary s band and a visit by Santa Claus where the kids all received a gift. Kiwanis Kids with Santa (Manny Sousa) Steve Hemingway & Michael Norris staying warm inside the house Lesley & Cristina Tower s with Kevin Paul & Cassandra Paul Santa with Sophia Molino, Cassandra Paul HERMOSA BEACH KIWANIS CLUB SELLING CHRISTMAS TREES: Don t forget to buy your Christmas Tree from the Hermosa Beach Kiwanis. All proceeds go to Kiwanis charities and sponsored youth groups. They are located at PCH and Pier Avenue. Kiwanis One Can Make A Difference Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time
7 Page 7 OTHER KIWANIS PROJECTS & PROGRAMS KID IN CHARGE: This is a program started by Len Kuszmaul a retired firefighter and Kiwanian. The go into schools and provide instructions to kids to go home and change the batteries in the smoke detectors. Did you know that: Fire is the leading cause of death in children under 15 80% of fire deaths occur when people sleep 7% of homes in the U.S. lack smoke alarms 20% of U.S. homes have smoke alarms that do not work 80% of all fire deaths occurred in 27% of homes that did not have working smoking alarms With the instruction to the kids in school they receive a package that includes replacement batteries for their home smoke alarm. The cost to the Kiwanis Clubs to put on this program is as little as $4 per student. What a wonderful way to show that Kiwanis Cares about the safety of our children. For more information go to CAL-NEV-HA AND KI FOUNDATION NEWS The Kiwanis Doctor Program: With the backing of a $186,000 grant from the Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation trains doctors in the field of Pediatric Emergency Medicine. The doctors that have gone through this program then collaborated with Kiwanis Clubs to provide training in the field of pediatric trauma to paramedics, nurses and physicians in rural areas of the Cal-Nev-Ha District. The goal of the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship is simple: Save the lives of children by training doctors about the latest in pediatric treatment.. For more information go to KIWANIS ROSE FLOAT: This year s parade theme is Hats Off to Entertainment and the Kiwanis float theme is Share the Out-of-Doors. The Kiwanis International Rose Float provides an opportunity for 8,000 Key Club, Kiwin s, Circle K, Builders Club, and Kiwanis members to decorate the float and 10 additional floats throughout December. The Fellowship Medallion Program. Donations of $1000 go into a restricted fund and the interest is then used for future floats. If you donate, you also receive a handsome medallion to proudly wear at Kiwanis functions. Division 19 s day to help feed all the volunteers is December 7 th. For more info go to
