August Calendar Photo Contest Deadline September 2 Labor Day (BEK office closed for Holiday) September 8 Grandparent s Day September 11 Patriot Day September 22 Autumn Begins Punt, Pass and Kick to Win $500 It s the half-time football contest that has a winner at every game. Get in the game this fall with BEK Communications and your area businesses and schools for a unique contest where the contestant and/or the hosting school or athletic club score $500 every time! That s $3000 to be given away this season and here s how it works: One contestant will be drawn at each location for a chance to win $500 during this half-time event. The contestant drawn will choose to punt, pass or kick through the goal post from the 5 yard line for $50, the 10 yard line for $100 and then the 25 yard line for $250. The contestant will choose when to use his/her punt, pass and kick options but will need to use all three methods to complete the contest. If the contestant is successful at all three methods, he/she will get a $100 bonus! Total possible winnings will be $500. The amount NOT won, of the $500 available winnings, will be donated to the school or athletic club hosting the game. Each contestant is guaranteed $25 for participating plus a consolation prize(s). Are you 18 or older? Then you are eligible to enter the contest. Not interested in a chance to win $500? Register for door prizes and cheer on the lucky contestant. What s for the kids? 4 BEK Sports Update In the sports world, change is common. Team rosters change, team names change and regions change too. This fall, BEK Sports will have some changes to its team roster, channel names and regional alignments. BEK Sports Team Roster Additions BEK Sports welcomes two new people to its staff. BEK Sports New Regions Defined With the relocation of the Minot office to Fargo, BEK Sports has adjusted the regional alignment of the affiliate companies. This will allow the greatest coverage for all of the affiliates and will continue to advance the BEK Sports product. (See map below.) The regions will include the following: Pat Boylan, a Ball State University graduate and native of Carmel, I.N., joined the team on July 8th as Broadcast Director. Pat was 7th among all collegiate sports broadcasters in the nation for the Jim Nantz Award and he is excited to begin his career with the BEK Sports Network family. Pat joins the Bismarck office staff of Pat Boylan Jordan Hassler, Simon Rosenwasser and Scott Loerch. He will be responsible for commercial production, setting up live broadcasts and play by play coverage. Sports is in Pat s blood. There is no place he would rather be than Busch Stadium, home of the St. Louis Cardinals, or Lucas Oil Stadium, home of the Colts. He proudly states that his lifetime fan achievement to date is that he has been to 85 NFL games and 70 MLB games. BEK Sports West BEK Communications Dickey Rural Networks Reservation Telephone Cooperative SRT Communications Midstate Telephone Company Northwest Communications Cooperative BEK Sports East United/Turtle Mountain Communications Polar Communications North Dakota Telephone Company Dakota Central Telecommunications Red River Communications The BEK Sports Network will cover games from both the West and East Regions. An enthusiastic Isaac Will Rice, Jr. also joined the BEK Sports team as Live Event Director on July 8th. Isaac is a recent Bethany Lutheran College graduate and a native of Michigan. Isaac participated in several different roles in over 50 LIVE broadcasts of MSU-Mankato hockey. Isaac is a perfectionist, challenging himself Isaac Will Rice, Jr. to a zero blooper tolerance to deliver a perfect live televised game. Isaac s role at BEK Sports is directing local high school broadcasts throughout North Dakota. He joins the Fargo office staff of John Hadden and Brent Borkhuis. Isaac s family ties are tight and he feels blessed having a very supportive family who has adjusted to his long distance college choice and his recent North Dakota career move. Besides high school and college sports, Isaac enjoys the sport of fishing; he likes to workout, watch TV and repair computers. Get in the Game with BEK Sports! BEK Sports Name Changes BEK Sports is transitioning to a little different channel format: BEK Sports Network, Channel 28, BEK Sports East, Channel 29 and BEK Sports West, Channel 30. Refer to the map and the Fall Schedule included in this issue of the BEK Beacon. BEK area games are highlighted in green on the schedule. Note: BEK area games will not all be on one specific channel, so be sure to check the schedule for games in your area. 4

6 Additional Directories Available at Local Businesses The edition of the BEK/West River Missouri Slope Telephone Directory was mailed to BEK customers in June. The BEK directory includes listings from BEK Communications and West River Telecommunications based out of Hazen, N.D., as well as Bismarck- Mandan Business and Residence listings. Please take some time to look at your own listing in the new phone book. If you find any errors, please report them to BEK as soon as possible. While every effort is made to improve each issue and to eliminate all errors in the BEK/ West River Missouri Slope Telephone Directory, BEK Communications and the publishers of the directory do not assume any liability because of errors and omissions that may occur in the telephone directory. If you did not receive the new directory or need extra copies, additional directories are available at the following locations: Bismarck BEK Communications Memorial Highway First Community Credit Union N. 5th St. or 3201 Weiss Ave Braddock Hager s Bar Dawson Dawson Cafe Hague Hague Store Hazelton Bank of Hazelton Kintyre Titan Machinery Lehr Security State Bank (M-W-F mornings) Linton BNC National Bank Napoleon Stock Growers Bank Pettibone T & V Grocery Regan Regan Farmers Union Elevator Robinson First Security Bank West (open mornings) Steele BEK Communications Headquarters Sterling Cenex Tops Truck Stop Strasburg Strasburg State Bank Tappen Tappen Farm Supply Tuttle Tuttle Community Store Wilton City of Wilton (Auditor s Office) and First State Bank of Wilton Wing Chat & Chew Cafe Wishek Security State Bank Zeeland McIntosh County Bank BEK Construction BEK Communications began the construction year with well laid plans for bringing BEK Fiber to areas in rural Bismarck. Mother Nature had a little different plan for us as she held tight to a cold, wet weather pattern causing nearly a month delay in spring construction across the state of North Dakota. Once conditions improved, we hit the ground running with several construction projects. 1. Fischer Contracting is helping with main line construction in subdivision 1 of Country Hills. There are currently 70 lots for homes in this area that is located NE of the Intersection of 80th Street and 71st Avenue. And it s still growing. 2. In the 3rd addition area of Copper Ridge, Fischer Contracting has completed the main line fiber construction and plow drops have been made to those taking service. 3. Main line construction is also completed in two small developments south of the University of Mary at Signal Street and McDonald Road. That s not all - further expansion plans for BEK Fiber include the Apple Creek Industrial Park and several homes near Majestic Street east of Lincoln. Before year-end, BEK expects to have a lot of construction completed that will align us for new development in As a BEK customer, you can help with the growth of our company and benefit by doing so. How? Find great promotions offered periodically on BEK s Facebook page for new and existing customers. Check us out at BEKCommunications. One More Thing Call Before You Dig! BEK reminds you that if you are planning a do-ityourself project such as planting a tree, digging a hole to put up a new mailbox, fence or tree house for the kids; it s important that you call North Dakota One-Call (811) first. There are a number of utility lines buried on your property telephone, electric, gas or propane, water sewer, and cable TV. It may not seem like a big deal; but it can be. It s a free service and it s simple; it doesn t cost you anything to call before you dig. Losing your utilities for any length of time now that s annoying! 6
