Parade Change The parade was held Aug. 13, earlier than in the past, to give every exhibitor a chance to participate. 2 nights of harness racing By Michelle Stein For LIMA Those with a passion for live horse racing combined with legal wagering are in luck, as two nights of harness racing will once again be held at the Allen County Fair. The Dunlap Renner Memorial Pace a fair tradition for more than 20 years will be held Tuesday at the grandstands. Wednesday will be the Allen County Super Trot, which is another long-time fair tradition. Post times are 6:30 p.m. both days. The goal is to run a race every 15 minutes, explained Dennis Fricke, the fair s harness racing director. I m running the fillies on Tuesday night and the colts on Wednesday night, Fricke said. We used to call it the girls night out and the boys night out. Not familiar with this specific type of competition? No problem. Here s the lowdown. The races are file Wishin I Was Fishin, driven by Scott Cisco, took first place in the Allen County Super Trot last year. centered around a horse pulling a two-wheeled vehicle called a sulky with a driver. And there are actually two types of racing: Pace and trot. The difference between them is the gait of the horses as they re moving. For a trot, horses always have one foot on the ground. For pacing, horses actually sway as they run, since their two right legs move forward at the same time, and then the two left legs move forward. Whether you re getting in on the pari-mutuel betting action, or simply spectating, race-goers are in for an action-packed evening. We re going to be up a little more than it was last year, Fricke said, of the number of horses competing at the fair for The numbers are increasing again. Ohio s back to number one in breeding horses for their harness racing. The racinos has brought horseracing back to Ohio, and that helps fund the county fairs. The breeders who have moved away have moved back. Harness racing at the Allen County Fair is sponsored by Mid- American Cleaning Contractors; admission is free to the races on both nights. 3 Thursday, August 17, Fair Drag Racing Dustin Lynch Courtesy of Joseph Llanes Lynch excited to play at the fair By Merri Hanjora mhanjora@limanews.com LIMA The Allen County Fair strives to bring in big-name talent. The fair has a tradition of bringing big country music acts to the fair, including this year s entertainment, Dustin Lynch and Neal McCoy. Dustin Lynch grew up in Tullahoma, Tennessee, and moved to Nashville in His hit songs include, Small Town Boy, Mind Reader, Hell of a Night, Cowboys and Angels and Seein Red. Lynch and his band are excited to play in front of the crowd at the fairgrounds. We, me and my band, do feed off the crowd. That s really what steers our show and the energy we re receiving from everyone in front of us. We soak it in and return the favor right back. Shows are fun like that. You never know where they re going to go or which direction it s going. Keeps each show different, fresh and exciting for us, said Lynch. Lynch and his band strive to give the audience a good time. Being on stage is what we live to do. Everything that we do in life is for the live show and with the live show in mind. Whenever we are up there, we are in our happy place and giving it whatever we ve got, said Lynch. Lynch has a new album coming out soon, and he will be introducing new songs at the fairgrounds. We re in this cool little phase of the year where the album s done and it s going to be coming out very, very soon and we re starting to play our new songs at our live shows. I m still messing up the words to the new songs. It s funny how that goes, but yeah we re starting to do that. Talk about keeping on your toes, that s definitely doing it for us right now, said Lynch. Reach Merri Hanjora at IF YOU GO WHAT: Dustin Lynch with special guest Neal McCoy WHEN: 8 p.m. Saturday WHERE: Allen County Fairgrounds, 2750 Harding Highway, Lima ADMISSION: $40 grandstand and bleachers; $50 track; $100 VIP standing room only For tickets to the Allen County Fair concert, visit the fair website at allencofair.com or call the fair board office at By J Swygart jswygart@limanews.com LIMA Think you ve got the fastest dirt bike in the area? Or the speediest all-terrain vehicle? Maybe you think your streetlegal car or truck could blow the doors off the competition. Or that no one can keep pace with your super-charged semi tractor. Well those with the need for speed, and an eagerness to show it off, will have the opportunity to put their vehicles to the test when KOI Drag Racing comes to the Allen County Fair. According to KOI spokesman Lewis Cleaver, if it s got wheels and a motor, you can race it during the fair. For an entry fee of just $10 per event ($20 for diesel-powered vehicles) area residents can enter one or more of several categories of drag races, ranging from heats for ATVs big and small to dirt bikes and knobby tire all-terrain vehicles. Heats are divided into youth (12 and under) and adult categories. There is also a powder puff division for female race enthusiasts. Divisions for truck and fullsized vehicles include street, modified diesel, 4- and 6-cylinder 4x4s and 4-, 6- and 8-cylinder cars. Competitors will barrel down a 200-foot track to the finish line. Prize money will be awarded in each division. We use the same type of equipment that s used in traditional drag racing, Cleaver said. It s real high-tech. Cleaver said his organization, based in Northern Kentucky, stages between drag races annually in Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana (hence the KOI designation). He said shows typically attract entrants and seem to be a hit with those in attendance. The show starts at 7 p.m. and will last until around 11 p.m. People tend to hang around until the very end, said Cleaver. They seem to enjoy it. IF YOU GO The weather clears up at the Demolition Derby last year. WHAT: KOI Drag Racing WHEN: 7 p.m. Aug. 26 WHERE: Allen County Fair Grandstand ADMISSION: $5 for ages 7 and older; children ages 6 and younger admitted free. Infield pit passes $5 for all ages. file

4 4 Thursday, August 17, 2017 New events headline free entertainment By John Bush LIMA The Allen County Fair will feature an abundance of free entertainment, including three new events meant to entertain, educate and bring out the competitive spirit of children and adults. Wolves of the World will perform three shows daily, Red Dragon Laser Tag will be open for most of the day Aug. 25 and a glass blowing demonstration will occur for six hours on Sunday. Each event will be held at Roschman Park or the grandstand. Wolves of the World is the only traveling pack of wolves on the road today, according to the show s proprietor, Sharon Sandlofer. She called it a one of a kind show meant to educate people about the beauty and importance of wolves. Our purpose is to teach people that they re not the big bad wolves they re portrayed to be, and that they are very important to our ecosystem, Sandlofer said. The event includes an educational wolf discovery zone where people can see the animals Wolves of the World 7:30 p.m. Friday, ; 1:30, 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday through Aug. 26, Red Dragon Laser Tag Noon to 10 p.m. Aug. 25, grandstand Glass blowing by Mobile Glass Studios 3 to 9 p.m. Sunday, ; Auction at 2:30 p.m. Aug. 26, AAA Grandstand Plaza up close, as well as performances meant to show the wolves natural behaviors. They re not going to be jumping through fire hoops. They ll be doing things wolves do like showing their agility, their sense of focus and the things that make them the hunters they are, Sandlofer said. Red Dragon Laser Tag is an outdoor competition for people of all ages. It works much like indoor laser tag, though the equipment is slightly different. Anywhere from six to eight people will play a five Courtesy of the Allen County Fair Red Dragon Laser Tag will be available for fair-goers for free this year. minute game, and whoever has the most hits will win. Inflatable bunkers will be set up along the grandstand for players to hide behind. Owner Gary Gould called it paintball without the mess, welts and projectiles. Ryan Gothrup, of Mobile Glass Studios, will perform glass blowing demonstrations for those who Courtesy of the Allen County Fair Wolves are on display at a new free entertainment offering at the fair this year. Each piece will then be auctioned off to people who want to bring the artwork home with them. Between the band show, cheerleading competition and the baton and flag competition, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy live performances while showing your school spirit. The band show, which is strictly for entertainment and not a judged event, will be held Friday at the grandstand. A total of 12 Band show: 7 p.m. Friday at the grandstand; free for ages 6 and younger, $5 for ages 7 and up Cheerleading competition: 7 p.m. Monday at the grandstand; free for ages 6 and younger, $5 for ages 7 and up Baton and flag competition: 9 a.m. Aug. 26 at the grandstand; free admission area bands are signed up to offer a preview of their 2017 season. This year, Bluffton High School will serve as the host band, and the event is sponsored by Kewpee Hamburgers. And once again, the very first performance will feature the OSU Alumni Band. You just stop out and support your local schools, said Tina Hershberger, fair activities manager. And a lot of bands perform their halftime shows that will be at the football games. The cheerleading competition, which is sponsored by Reineke Family Dealership, will be held Monday at the grandstand. For this judged event, there are 12 squads competing in three divisions: High school, junior high and a youth midget football division. The top three squads in each division will have the honor of taking home a trophy in addition to one full year of bragging rights. It draws a good crowd, Hershberger said. You got your families and your grandparents that come out and watch the kids. Last but not least, the baton and flag competition is slated for 9 a.m. Aug. 26 at the grandstand. The event is sponsored by Max s Trader Days and Water Dog Races and Rebel Run. For 2017, nine schools will be competing, but only the top two will walk away with awards.

5 Thursday, August 17, Fair food: Go for the eats By Michelle Stein For LIMA It s true the Allen County Fair will have oodles of rides and events but it really wouldn t be a proper experience without the remaining piece of the fair trifecta: Concessions. Whether you re perusing the commercial areas, hitting up the merchant building or seeking a burger, a funnel cake or a deep-fried Oreo, the Allen County Fair won t disappoint with its impressive selection of goodies and services. We have a pretty full fairgrounds this year, said Dar Hollar, fair concessions manager. We obviously have our old stand-bys, as far as the food the corn dogs, the french fries, the barbecue. Got a craving for breadsticks or soft pretzels? There are trailers for both. And one particularly sweet, new option for 2017: A cinnamon roll trailer. The Taste of the Fair event, which is going on IF YOU GO Taste of the Fair: Noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday its third year, is set for noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday. During the event, fair-goers will have an opportunity to try smaller portions of food for $2 from certain vendors. A map of all vendors taking part will be available to help people locate participating booths. Sometimes, maybe there s something that you don t know you re if going to like but you can try it that way, Hollar said of Taste of the Fair. Some of vendors will do, instead of a full sandwich, will do like a slider sandwich. Maybe a couple of small dips of ice cream, versus a smaller dip. I have one vendor that does juniorsize funnel cakes or elephant ears. So it s just smaller portions. That way you can try more stuff. Danielle Fustaino, of Florida, prepares ribbon fries from Famous Gabby s Kitchen during last year s fair. The merchant building will be full again this year, Hollar noted, reminding area residents to check out the Allen County Fair s website for vendor coupons before heading out to the fairgrounds. I do encourage everybody to walk through the grounds through the commercial area of the merchant building, Hollar added. I have some new vendors in the merchant building essential oils, local honey distributor, some different things we haven t had before. Junior Fair exhibits focus on ag roots By Bryan Reyonlds breynolds@limanews.com LIMA Along with the rides, carnival games and fair food comes the Allen County Junior Fair where FFA and 4-H children show off their livestock and special projects. Livestock and special projects are on display during the county fair. Livestock projects are further separated into breeding animals and market animals, said Kelly Coble, OSU 4-H youth development extension educator. Breeding animals are raised by 4-H and FFA members to be shown during the fair and kept afterward, Coble said. Market animals are raised by the members to be shown and then sold for meat after the fair ends. Both project types are judged by different standards; market is judged by their appearance which indicates their meat quality. Breeding animals are judged by aspects related to quality breeding stock, Coble said. When viewing the animals during the fair, remember to wash your hands afterward, she said. Even if you don t touch anything in each barn, it s important to wash your hands after exiting each one. Right now, just with the things that have happened at other fairs, we re really pushing washing your hands, Coble said. That s just good bio security for any livestock operation. The Junior Fair teaches children how to be responsible by having them raise and feed the animals they show, she said. It also teaches them showmanship and how to sell a product. Even if they don t have the best-looking animal, if they can still do well by knowing how to show it, Coble said. It shows kids the reality of farming, she said. Sometimes you have a good year, and sometimes you don t. Reach Bryan Reynolds at info@limanews.com. See us at the 2017 ALLEN COUNTY FAIR NOW with 2 Locations 121 W. Auglaize St. Wapakoneta, OH W. Elm St Lima, OH We will be giving out 300 T-shirts to children on Monday at 5 pm at the Busy B booth located north of the rabbit barn and having live honeybee shows throughout the week (see our facebook page for dates and times) Call or text

10 10 Thursday, August 17, 2017 New improvements add color to Allen County Fair By Craig Kelly LIMA While the Allen County Fair Board has been busy making arrangements for all of the entertainment, food and other fair attractions, efforts have also gone into improving the Allen County Fairgrounds to help make the fair even better. The most significant improvement, and the one that will be the most noticeable, will be the rehabilitation and repainting of the grandstand. The $200,000 project included a structural analysis, millwright work, along with the new beige, red and blue paint job. We re proud to show that off with the new colors and new scheme, Allen County Fair Manager Bob Fricke said. It s a big focal point of the grounds, and it s been well received all summer, and we can t wait for our fair fans to come out and see it. That same color scheme will be on display in the show arena, and multi-colored picnic tables with umbrellas will also add more color to the fairgrounds. We ve also put asphalt grindings throughout the drives in the campground area this year, Craig Kelly The newly renovated and repainted grandstand will be one of the focal points of the Allen County Fair. Fricke said. We re also working on putting in a stone area with some asphalt grindings for a pad in the hospitality area, which will be nice for the corporate picnics coming in. Along with the physical additions, there will also be virtual improvements, with a new, mobile-friendly website, coming in time for the fair. We thought about an app, but we found that the new website was so effective, Fricke said. It ll be good for everybody when they re on the grounds. It ll pull up all the events going on. Reach Craig Kelly at or on Gospel Singing Tent stands on the promise By Michelle Stein For LIMA Back for its 37th year, the Gospel Singing Tent will offer live musical performances over a span of nine days at the Allen County Fair. The purpose and mission is to spread the saving knowledge and understanding of the gospel of Jesus Christ to those saved and unsaved, through the playing and singing of gospel music, said Gene Derringer, secretarytreasurer and organizer of the Gospel Singing Tent. Our goal is to maybe give a little comfort for those that are hurting, some entertainment for those who just want to sit down and rest, and maybe somebody walking by might just stop in and see what s going on. Although southern gospel music will naturally make up the bulk of the acts, there will also be one bluegrass group performing this year. The bluegrass people will really like Southern Raised, Derringer said, noting this is a sibling group consisting of one brother and three sisters. My goal is to reach out to the country western and bluegrass in the future. Because that s a trend, away from the tent. But that starts next year. Donations from individuals, organizations and businesses make the gospel tent possible each year at the Allen County Fair. And fortunately, local support for this long-standing tradition has been expanding for quite some time. In 2011, we had 46 donors, Derringer said. This year, we re over 420. What this has done is enabled us to bring in the nationally-known and award-winning artists. We just finished the best fundraiser year we ve ever had. A senior day will be held Aug. 24 and will feature golden age parties to recognize oldest members of the crowd, people who traveled the furthest, couples who have been married the longest and more. Two of these parties will be held on senior day one at 11 a.m. and one at 2:30 p.m. In honor of its many years of donorship, a Kewpee Hamburgers night will be held Aug. 25. The Gospel Singing Tent is the first tent on the right from the front walk-in gates, next to a handicapped parking lot. Reach Michelle Stein at info@limanews.com. 11 Thursday, August 17, Ride safely with Poor Jack Amusements By Michelle Stein For LIMA No county fair would be complete without amusement rides, and Poor Jack Amusements is back again to offer family fun and thrills. Allen County is one of our bigger fairs, said Gary Bohlander, one of the owners of the familyrun Poor Jack Amusements. We get all of our good stuff there. The Wipe Out and the Freak Out are two of the most popular rides each year, he noted. Although, fair-goers may want to try one of the new options in the lineup: A new Scrambler ride and a new Black Widow, which is a remake of the old Spider ride. Bohlander also touched upon ride safety. With the recent ride-related death at the Ohio State Fair, it s something that s undoubtedly a concern fresh in people s minds this fair season. An 18 year old was killed and seven others were injured in Columbus last month on the Fire Ball. Bohlander said the Freak Out is a similar-looking ride that will be in Allen County. It s not the same one, but it s a cousin of the one that had a problem at Columbus, Bohlander said. The ride we have, the same manufacturer built it just a smaller version of what was at $15 wristband specials: Noon to 5 p.m. Monday and Aug. 24 Individual ride tickets: $1.25 each, four for $5 and 20 for $20. All-day ride wristband: Good for noon to 11 p.m., except 4 to 11 p.m. Friday and Aug. 25. file Riders enjoy the Wipeout during last year s fair. that fair. All the states immediately closed (the Fire Ball) and everything like it. And the manufacturers stood up for us and sent out letters that gave the green light to our ride. It said absolutely that what we have, even though the ride looks similar, the thing that happened in Columbus absolutely can t happen. Ride operators at the Allen County Fair will perform daily inspections, complete with written checklists of the highlights that need paid attention to, Bohlander explained. A ride supervisor also double-checks and spot-checks rides on at least a daily basis. And this is on top of yearly Cherry's Propane Service, Ltd inspections by Poor Jack s insurance company, plus state inspections. Some of our equipment will be in Mercer County the week prior to Allen County, he said. So that equipment there will get its initial Ohio inspection for the year. And then the rest of the stuff that s at your fair, it ll be at the fairgrounds several days early, and they ll get it set up. And the ride inspectors will inspect that stuff on Thursday, the day before the fair, too. Rides at the Allen County Fair will be open from noon to 11 p.m. each day, except Fridays. (They will be open from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday and Aug. 25.) Although ride wristbands are available every day for $25, discounted wristbands will be sold for $15 from noon to 5 p.m. on Monday and Aug. 24. WEBB INSURANCE AGENCY, INC.
