1 THE NEWSLETTER OF JCNA CLUB #63 VOLUME 4, ISSUE 3 The Valley Jaguar From the Cockpit: Saturday May 25 saw Susquehanna Valley Jaguar Club's Concours d'elegance begin in 44 degree temperatures as staff began to set up the field at 6:45a.m. Beautiful sun and cloudless skies provided a great park setting for 37 registered Jaguars. Title Sponsor, Jaguar Land Rover Harrisburg, provided an F-Type for display and pictures were taken all day while Mark Reilly explained details of the new car. Maple Donuts, corporate sponsor, provided coffee and donuts while Olde York Classics sponsored a local Fife and Drum presentation. Other sponsors included Auto Zone, SNG Barratt, Welsh Jaguar, Haggerty, Gladfelter Insurance, and Hershey Percussion. Jaguar Land Rover Harrisburg chose John Spillman's MK VIII as Dealer Choice Trophy, while Kurt Rappold was presented the Spirit of the Concours Award by Maple Donuts. (Ed. Kurt is the only member I know with a 4-digit JCNA number!) Thanks to all who participated as staff, judges and entrants. Saturday June 8th saw "The Blob" return to the big screen at Hershey Backyard Theatre. Actually, the screen was too big for the backyard so it remains in the front. Steve McQueen, owner of an XKSS, was the star "teenager"- actually 28 - while Helen Crump of the Andy Griffith Show was his girl. The Downingtown Diner was prominently featured at the end of the movie. Kathy provided soda pop, popcorn and movie theatre candy favorites like Goobers and milk duds inspired by the "Let s All Go to the Lobby" short clip. A good time was had by all even though the "Blob" failed to materialize by the end of the evening! Happy Trails, Dave M. 7 British Invade Gettysburg Page 7
8 British Invade Gettysburg, by Denny Ward On Saturday, , I ran my 1964 Triumph TR4 to Hake s in Dover to fill up on non-ethanol gas, then early Sunday morning I checked the oil and topped the dashpots. Cindy and I met up with her sister Sandy and brother- in- law Carl, to trek to Gettysburg for the BIG show. Following Carl s Corvette (his nicely restored MG-TF is having fuel problems), we took some beautiful back roads to the G Burg Outlets, where the all- British car show is held. Carl parked in the general lot, and Cindy and I were directed to proceed down the boulevard and park in front of Tommy Hilfiger, with a BRG MGB to the right and a yellow Spitfire on the left. As we got out of the Triumph, Cindy s sister arrived and that was the last I saw of them for over 2 hours. Carl and I strolled past rows of British cars, taking pictures, and chatting with many owners and old friends. There was good representation of old and newer Jaguars, including XK8, XK, XKR, XJ8, XJR, XK120, several E-Types. We saw Jenson, Lotus, Rolls Royce, Daimler, Mini, Morris, Austin Healey, Austin and more. However my favorite car at the show had to be a maroon 1930 s Riley sedan, which was a true barn find. It was under construction, but was driven to the show. Did you know that Morgan has begun building 3-wheelers again? Only a trained eye can tell a new one from a 1930 s version. The sharp new Lotus Exige was also on display. We completed most of the circuit once, then stopped at Quiznos for lunch. When we reached my Triumph after lunch, the boot was full of shopping bags, but Cindy and Sandy were nowhere in sight. The British Invade Gettysburg show is sponsored by the Lanco MG club, and proceeds benefit Toys for Tots. The day was hot, but not unbearable, and there are tons of air-conditioned shops to duck into. Next year, plan to attend, with or without your Jag, and support a good cause while having a great time. 9 The Blob The Blob is an independently made 1958 American horror/science-fiction film that depicts a giant amoeba-like alien that came from outer space and terrorizes the small community of Downingtown, Pennsylvania. The film was Steve McQueen's debut leading role, and also starred Aneta Corsaut. The film's tongue-in-cheek theme song, "Beware of the Blob", was written by Burt Bacharach and Mack David and became a nationwide hit in the U.S. It was recorded by studio group the Five Blobs actually singer Bernie Knee overdubbing himself.
