PRESIDENT S MESSAGE The Penang Swimming Club (PSC) is the sum of its members, some active, some illustrious, many passive and the list goes on. Indeed, we have an exciting potpourri of members. What is critical then is for us to foster a culture of accommodating each other. No one is too big for the Club and neither should anyone be considered insignificant. All members, more than 7,000 of us should be at the Club on equal footing, irrespective of colour, profession, financial standing and the likes. For PSC to be an esteemed family club for cultured individuals, we need to foster a spirit of trust and respect for each other, among members, between members and staff and between members and the Main Committee. For us, the Main Committee members, we are well aware that in the final analysis, we are a collection of individuals who volunteer to serve the Club in an honorary position. We will work on the principle that we are entrusted to do a job and we will do so in ways we deem fit, bearing in mind the best interest of the Club. We will strive on teamwork and will be rather single minded about our tasks at hand. Importantly, our maxim should be we hold no prisoners and carry no passengers in our team. The journey of the Club needs to be smooth and the Main Committee would like to be sanguine about it. Our tasks ahead would be made easier if we can have more members to work with us. Yes, more than working for you, we prefer to work with you for our mutual benefits. Let us do it right and keep it right. As it has been said, We only live once but if you do it right, once is enough... Mae West. 5 Many changes have and are taking place. All these changes will definitely augur well for all members and at the same time bring PSC to a higher level. GENERAL MANAGER S MESSAGE Dear Members, Hello again, two months have gone by in the blink of an eye, and I suppose this is due to the dynamic events happening in the Club. Many changes have and are taking place in the short space of time since I took over the administration of this wonderful Club. There is the Club House that is being upgraded along with the Marina Deck. The 2nd swimming pool is in progress as well as the upgrading of the Changing Room. All these changes will definitely augur well for all members and at the same time bring PSC to a higher level. Recently on 7 June, Members Night was celebrated on a grand scale to mark the 110th Anniversary of PSC. Almost 600 members attended the swash buckling Rock n Roll event graced by none other than our Trustee Tan Sri Kamal Hashim. I m sure everyone enjoyed themselves and felt 10 years younger during that exciting night. The other event which enticed the crowd was the PSC Gala Dinner and Show featuring the Comedy Court on 21 June. There was never a dull moment as the more than 300 members who attended were kept laughing the whole night. They were also entertained by Penang s top band Daniel Chan & Friends. On 23 June, the Annual General Meeting was held at the Multi-Purpose Hall. As usual, it saw a lively debate on the Agenda of the day and the general meeting ended on a happy note at about 1.53pm. Upcoming events include the Mesra Raya scheduled on 23 August and the exciting Oktoberfest to be held tentatively on 4th October. Members are encouraged to support the Mesra Raya celebration to show their caring attitude towards the less fortunate and also to come in full force for the Oktoberfest as advocated by our motto to Live Life. 10 CLUB HAPPENINGS Rocking MEMBERS NIGHT good time! PSC celebrated 110 excellent years of being the premier club in Penang with yet another milestone Members Night that was attended by over 550 members. There is no denying the fact that this elite community sure know how to have fun, and have fun they certainly did... in true PSC grandiose! Everyone came dressed to the hilt to the Rock & Roll theme; an era of grunge and gothic inspired fashion, from rockabilly shirts and cropped denim to rock chic leather and biker boots. One could feel the excitement the moment they entered the Multi-Purpose Hall that was all geared up for THE event of the year. Everyone was so looking forward to their special night, an occasion that was all about them. 10 THE NAUTILUS

Club President Chan Kean Hin, in his last speech before the AGM, recorded his most sincere appreciation for the opportunity to work, learn and enjoy the Club as well as his heartfelt thanks to everyone who have made my life that much more interesting and fulfilling. And after that, it was off to a ROCKING start!! It was great food, great entertainment and great time the whole night long. Adhering to the tradition of Members Night, all members old and young happily joined in the merriment of dancing, singing and fun games. The band Focus and master of ceremony Fitri Gerard kept the guests in high spirit with their fabulous music and witty bantering. Club Trustee Tan Sri Kamal Hashim sportingly showed off his line dancing moves. He even performed an impromptu karaoke rendition of My Way and kept his tempo with When I Fall In Love by Nat King Cole, he was presented with a flower by Puan Sri Su Hashim as he sang the last few notes. The audience of course swooned at the romantic gesture. Our other Trustee Dato Mahinder Singh Dulku also took to the dance floor and grooved to the beat of Shakira s WakaWaka. Our very own Allan and Linda Aw thrilled with their Rock & Roll performance while PSC Latin Solo Dancers led by instructor Peter Ang further upped the heat with their moves. Hearts went a-flutter with shrieks of delight filling the room when Elvis Paul Lee made his appearance and belted out some of The King s popular songs. Elaine Tan, Stanley Chew and Racheal Tan from the Karaoke Section displayed their powerful vocal skills to loud cheers and applause. The highlight of the event was the cake cutting ceremony and the crowning of the Prom King and Queen which was won by Richard Chung and Michelle Lee respectively. The top three prizes of the lucky draw went to Annie Lim (ipad Mini), Catherine Hun (Samsung Galaxy Ace) and Leena Wong (Sony DVD Home Theatre System). It was indeed yet another successful Members Night with the attendees looking forward to the next one even before the night ended. THE NAUTILUS 11

CLUB HAPPENINGS Club Events-GALA DINNER A night of comedy and laughter True to the adage that laughter is the best medicine, the over 300 PSC members and their guests certainly had a hearty dose of that during the Gala Show & Dinner featuring the popular Comedy Court duo of Allan Perera and Indi Nadarajah. The entertainers had the audience in stitches with their brilliant wit and school-boy humour, which had definitely lent a whole new dimension to good comedy. Allan and Indi certainly brought the house down in their one hour show at the MPH. The crowd were laughing so hard that some were seen with tears rolling down their cheeks. 16 THE NAUTILUS

Earlier, the attendees and the invited guests from Penang Sports Club and Old Frees Association were feted to an eight-course Chinese dinner while being serenaded by jazz band Daniel Chan & Friends. PSC Vice-President Ong Ban Seang in his speech said that the event was also to pay tribute to Club President Chan Kean Hin, who would be relinquishing his post after the AGM on 23 June. Ong read out Chan s report card stating that the latter was very passionate about his responsibilities, single-minded in his every endeavor, and drive the job very hard... so hard that he had had three different General Managers over two years! Chan reciprocated with that he had enjoyed his enriching tenure as President and the Gala Show & Dinner tonight was PSC s way of making sure that its members stay healthy and happy with a touch of humour. After all, laughter is pure manna for the body, mind and soul. THE NAUTILUS 17

CLUB HAPPENINGS MOTHER S DAY We love you, mums!! The Mother s Day celebration at the Captain s Restaurant was a simple but meaningful affair with the mums being pampered and feted by their families. They were Queens for the day, revelling in the love and adoration showered on them on their special day while the Strollers Band entertained with a medley of English and Mandarin songs. FATHER S DAY Our dads, our heroes Beloved fathers around the world will always be the true superheroes in the eyes of their children. Think of all the sacrifices and heroic acts they performed for their children throughout their lifetime. And in return, all they ever look for is love, affection and devotion. So in true Father s Day spirit, the celebration at Captain s Restaurant was a jovial occasion with much pampering and expression of appreciation for the patriarch of the family. THE NAUTILUS 19

DIVE EXPEDITION TO Ko Lipe, Thailand 18 to 21 April 2013 In the early hours of 18 April, 20 of us divers from the Penang Swimming Club Scuba Section gathered at the Club s car park. With our bags and scuba gears all ready, we filled up two minivans and made our way to the Malaysian/Thailand Immigration check point at Wang Kelian. Our journey then continued to the sea port of Pok Bara for a connecting ferry ride to Ko Lipe for a four days/three nights diving expedition with the SABYE DIVERS. Ko Lipe or Koh Lipe is a small little island that lies between Ko Rawi and Ko Adang. It is geographically located north of Pulau Langkawi and is one of the closest overseas dive sites to Penang (refer to map). The water around the island is filled with rich and vibrant marine life. In our trip, we spotted a variety of beautiful colored corals and fishes such as the batfish, blue powder fish, pregnant seahorse, rainbow runners and even giant lobsters. Some of our divers managed to do night dives with underwater torches. They too caught up with the underwater nocturnal habits of the marine life like octopus and morel eel hunting feeding. When we re not diving, we enjoyed the bright and breezy days with awesome sunrise and sunset scenery that Ko Lipe offers. We had neap tides during our dives which went to depths from 9m to 25m giving us visibilities of at least 10m. Overall it was a successful trip and our 2013 biggest yet dive expedition. All of us had much to reflect and had their own story to tell on their experiences on this trip. A word of thanks and gratitude to the Dive Leaders and organisers for their unselfish dedication and time in ensuring that it was an incident free trip. And a hearty congratulation to our newly qualified Ocean Divers; Annie Lim, A.T. Lee, John and Chee Ensor, and Ronald Pilsner who each logged in more than 120 minutes dive times at different dive depths and conditions. We would also like to welcome Keith Futcher, an Advanced Diver from UK, and new member to the Club and Scuba Section. Keith also joined us on this expedition. Trial Dives Trial dives are held on the first Wednesday of every month at 9pm. Open to all Penang Swimming Club members. Please call or SMS for more information Kenny Chin or just pop by our Scuba Room on Wednesday from 9pm onwards 22 THE NAUTILUS

(from left) Ann Ch ng s prize catch while Judy Choo looks on. 2nd FISHING COMPETITION The Section s new term began with a day fishing competition held on 28 April, Some 50 angling members participated in the event. Scorching hot sun on that day did not deter the anglers from enjoying the fishing and outdoor fun. Carl Ooi, a regular participant of our fishing competitions, will have to put aside his fishing tackles, as he will be resigning from the section because he will be leaving Penang to further his studies in Kuala Lumpur. The second fishing competition of the year was held on 26 May, The sea was rough with strong waves and high tide that pushed anglers to consistently move backward. In spite of the rough waves that splashed along the coast, there were some good catches of Duri and Pari. Two newcomers are Manfred Wieden Maier and Chang Chee Yoon. Manfred, who was a pioneer angler, left the country but has returned. Whereas Chang who has joined the Section for a while and finally made it to the event. THE NAUTILUS 27

DARTS NEWS The final placings went to:- 1st 2nd 3rd Men Siong Ladies Quah Yean Lee Men Piao Ladies Loh May Ling Men Hardev Singh Ladies Jenny Beh DARTS GROUP SEASON 1st COMPETITION 5th MAY 2013 The first competition of the Darts Group Season was held at the Seafront Café and Darts Room on Sunday 5th May Although the competition was delayed until 2.30pm (to assist GE 13 voters), the attendance was low in comparison to previous events. Choo Lip Hoe took the prize for the only 180, and Tony Morley took both the high score (177), and high checkout (156) prizes. A halve us round, to determine match pairings, followed by an initial knock out round, reduced the competitors down to eight. Further knock out rounds eventually resulted in a final between Siong and Piao. Both darters played impressively, but Siong excelled, taking only 52 darts to win 3 legs. Outstanding Darts Group Victory at Taiping New Club The Darts Group visited Taiping New Club (TNC) on Sunday, 12th May, for their first Inter-Club match of the Season. This was the only available date for TNC, but, being Mothers Day, meant that it was a much depleted PSC Darts Teams that travelled. An early morning departure time gave rise to a mid journey break for brunch, which facilitated discussion on team selection and tactics. As TNC wished to field A and B teams, with a format of 1xFoursome, 2xDoubles and 4xSingles for each team, meant that PSC s darters were stretched for regular match players. It was decided to field a strong A Team of Choo, Tony, Kong and Michelle. And that Hardev Singh and Lee Cheng Tee would head the B Team aided by four less experienced darters. 32 THE NAUTILUS After a warm welcome at TNC, the matches commenced at 2.15pm. Our tactics and A Team selection immediately paid off. The Foursome cruised to a win, with Michelle, having been given the opportunity to check out, as always, checked out. Kong, although having a few problems checking out, won 2 0 in his Singles, while Tony came from 1 leg down, against TNC s high scoring Ajit, to win 2 1. Tony & Michelle, in the 1st Doubles, piled further pressure on TNC, with a 2 0 win, before a break for high tea gave TNC some respite. After the break, PSC s good form continued. Michelle, although only winning 2 1, was always in control of her Singles match. Choo, despite some erratic darts, comfortably won his Singles 2 0, and Choo & Kong won the final Doubles 2 1, to complete a 13 3 A Team victory for PSC. Unfortunately, our B team was not faring well. The B team matches are always about gaining experience and playing under the spotlight. Despite PSC losing the opening Foursome, and subsequently always in arrear, there were some surprisingly composed performances. Ably lead by Hardev, Lee and the rapidly improving May Ling and Walvin, they gave it their best effort but could not head off defeat. This was an outstanding win by the Club s A Team given the absence of several regular match play darters from the trip. Experience gained by the B Team darters will stand them in good stead in the future, and overall, this was a most encouraging start to the new Darts Season. Our darters took their leave, from the ever sociable TNC, at around 6.00pm, stopped for seafood dinner at Portwell, and arrived at PSC at 10.00pm, tired but in good spirits. Well done to those attending the event for both their match participation and vocal support.

AEROBICS NEWS Aqua Zumba The Aerobics Group was proud to present an Aqua Zumba trial class at the PSC Poolside on 18 June - the first ever in Penang by a certified instructor. The class was opened to all club members free of charge. It was a fantastic turnout of more than 30 members on this sunny Tuesday morning. We certainly rocked the poolside and brought the whole club to a standstill! The Latin-based music blaring from the speakers kept our energy and spirits high and provided for a truly fun and partylike atmosphere. There were splashing, stretching, twisting and of course, loads of shouting and laughing at this inaugural event. Our instructor Lisa took us through Zumba inspired dance moves that had everyone moving their bodies in just about any direction imaginable. She really made us work both our upper and lower body muscles with exercises such as front kicks, high knees and jumping jacks, all of which were modified for the pool environment. There is nothing quite like the combination of feeling almost weightless in the water while working every muscle in your body, and all the while smiling from ear to ear! Aqua Zumba is another reason why people may be ditching the workout and joining the party. This is also why Aqua Zumba is also known as Party in the Pool! Pilates Workshop using the humble Tennis Ball by the Aerobics Group On the 29th of April 2013, the Aerobics Group ran a special workshop using the tennis ball. Needless to say, we were all very excited and looked forward to a different pilates session. This is not to say Kitty Ng s twice weekly sessions are routine and boring. She challenges you at every session and missing one is tantamount to self-inflicted torture the next time around. So, after our usual one hour session we had a half hour workshop on using the tennis ball to relieve muscle pain. It is actually a self massage using the tennis ball and your own body weight. It hurts! A lot! But the pain is a good pain, releasing all those pent up tensions and knotted up muscles. Kitty worked us through five strategic points and I was really sore after that. The next morning, I had to make myself roll out of bed because it hurt so much! But it was worth it. By the middle of the day, the soreness was gone and I felt a lot more limber. So the next time I have a backache or a stiff shoulder, I am reaching out for that tennis ball! However, before you go ahead and apply that ball to every sore part of your body, use the Symptom Checker at www. triggerpointproducts.com. They have a diagram to zoom in on the body to determine if it is a muscle related problem or not. Pain has many causes and you should rule them out first. If in doubt, see a doctor - which is always the wisest thing to do. The Goal of The Tennis Ball Massage The purpose of the tennis ball massage is to use the right amount of pressure to release the pressure on the trigger point - enough to be effective, but not enough to irritate the knot. The sensation should be clear, strong and satisfying - good pain. If you are gritting your teeth or grimacing, you need to be more gentle with the pressure. You must be able to relax for the therapy to do its work. Although it seems counterintuitive to press on a spot that provokes pain, the discomfort diminishes once the trigger point has been loosened. The muscle fibers are holding for a protective purpose, which may have been applicable during a situation of stress, excessive load or trauma. Once that situation has changed, the muscle sometimes needs an outside stimulus to break the loop, hence the pressure on the trigger point. This is called myofascial release (MFR) therapy. Once you have adjusted your body to achieve the right pressure on the tension point, ease into the position and relax as much as possible. Then you must wait for the sensation to fade to about eighty percent of the original intensity. This is the release - which is a change in the physiological state of the muscle tissues or an easing of the knot. This release can take any time from ten seconds to several minutes. You must be patient and relax. Once you have released the tension in the myofascial muscle (or superficial muscles) realignment of the body is easier. You may find that you are often sore on one side of the body, because of tightness in the muscles and favor the side which does not have any soreness. This ultimately leads to postural problems. Once the tightness in the muscles have dissipated, muscle movement is easier and you will find that your posture is more balanced. This will ultimately lead to prevention of pain and premature degeneration of the bones. If you are very active in sports, using the tennis ball massage will also help to relieve sore and tight muscles. When we play a certain sport - be it swimming, tennis, golf or even weight training - one is only focusing on specific muscle groups which can become overused. Relieving the muscular tension in these areas will bring about balance in the entire body. THE NAUTILUS 33

TAEKWONDO NEWS Taekwondo Night 2013 One of our biggest event of the year, the recent Taekwondo Night which also coincided with Master MK Yaw s 60th birthday celebration was a huge success! We would like to shout out a big thank you to everybody that helped make the night a reality on Friday, 3 May. Kudos to the instructors, students and everyone who attended! After all the formality and speeches by the master of ceremony Henry Phan and chief instructor Grandmaster Peter Kang, both from the Penang United Taekwondo Society, as well as our beloved PSC President Chan Kean Hin, a sumptuous dinner was served. Everyone enjoyed themselves catching up with friends over a good meal. All eyes turned to the centre of the venue with the announcement that the taekwondo demonstration will soon begin. The attendees watched in awe as the students displayed their prowess in board and tiles breaking, sparring, flipping, poomsae and weaponry skills. Shouts of their kiai reverberated round the room as they kicked, blocked, punched, joint locked and took down their opponents. All too soon the excitement came to an end as the team posed for a group photo before the cake cutting ceremony. Adios until we meet again! 34 THE NAUTILUS

RENOVATION OF CHANGING ROOM AND MAIN CLUB HOUSE The Main Club House, built in 1904, is the very first building in the Club, and it had been the centre of club activities in the early years. The Club has since grown and expanded tremendously, with more diverse activities and facilities, but the Club House has remained the iconic face of our Club, a bastion to our heritage. The original Club House was expanded in 1923, with more space and a basement floor added to house the changing facilities. This basic structure has largely remained till today. Over the last two years, our Club Maintenance has made specific plans to rectify, improve and upgrade the changing room. The renovation project was approved at the AGM 2011 for RM300K, and at the AGM 2012 for RM700K. The first budget was found to be inadequate because the initial intention was for a general bricks and tiles renovation, and in the course of planning it was discovered several areas needing redress, for example the sewage system, the electrical wirings and associated equipment, the steam generators and air cond, and the space constraints at the ladies changing room, and the forgotten store rooms. It was then decided that we should address these problems altogether, and at one go, rather than leaving them to later days. With the budget approved after AGM 2012, a team of professionals went to work with the objectives of rectification, improvement and renewal of the place; Interior Designer on the design of the place, Consultant Engineers working on specific areas of concern, Civil and Structural Engineer on sewage and structural issue, M and E Engineer on the renewal of electrical system and issues at the Sauna and Steam Room, to mention but a few examples. 36 THE NAUTILUS

CLUB RENOVATION The Tendering Process With the design and technical specification completed, and with the assistance of a professional Quantity Surveyor, tender documents were compiled. Tenders were invited through advertisement in newspapers. Three companies bided for the project, and we are pleased to have identified a successful contractor. Cost of the Project The main renovation cost is RM700K, inclusive of M and E (RM280K) and Sewage (RM70K). Loose furniture accounts for RM120K. The total is RM820K. Professional fees RM80K. We provide for a contingency of RM100K. Upon completion, we could expect some new features which include resting lounges and provision for massage room for both men and ladies. The Ladies Changing Room would have expanded by an enlarged space of about 400 sq ft, while at the same time transforming the forgotten store rooms into useful space. We look forward to a facility which could serve the members better in quality, better safety environment, as well as comfort, more befitting one of a premier club. The renovation is expected to take 14 weeks to complete, and we apologize for the inconvenience arising out of the shutting of the facility during this period. THE NAUTILUS 37

AFFILIATED CLUBS Premier Sports and Social Club Established in 1852, the Singapore Cricket Club is one of the premier Sports and Social clubs in Asia Pacific with 160 years of heritage. It is the second oldest sports club in Singapore, junior by 10 years to the Singapore Sporting Club, now the Singapore Turf Club. The Club stands at the centre of the city s colonial heart, a public space that has witnessed many of Singapore s triumphs and defeats, upheavals, independence and, finally, the annual National Day Parades on 9 August. Cricket was played on the Padang as early as 1837, only 18 years after Sir Stamford Raffles founded the settlement of Singapore in 1819, but it was not until 1852 that the first meetings were called to discuss the formal establishment of a cricket club. There have been no fewer than three clubhouse buildings on the Padang, the first erected some time in the 1860s, the second in The third pavilion, which forms the core of the present clubhouse building, was built in It was extended in 1907, and the northern and southern wings that we see today were added in Anniversaries and the Future In 1992, the Club celebrated its 140th anniversary and organised various functions to raise funds for charity as part of the celebrations. The most memorable event was the 140th anniversary party held on the Padang on 30 October, which was graced by President and Mrs Wee. An SCC Hockey Sixes competition was inaugurated in In October 1993, the Singapore Cricket Association organised the first International Cricket Sixes tournament on the Padang, in which teams from 10 countries participated. On 29 May 1996, the Club passed several landmark resolutions - to embark on a $60-million Clubhouse redevelopment that will involve building two storeys underground, create a new class of transferable membership and give women full membership for the first time in the history of the Club. In the late 1990s, the SCC International Rugby Sevens attained the status of a top international club tournament. In 1998, the New Zealand Rugby Sevens Commonwealth team featuring rugby legend Jonah Lomu visited the Club and played on the Padang. In the same year, Petone from New Zealand, featuring another Kiwi legend, Tana Umaga, won the Ablitt Cup at the Padang. 42 THE NAUTILUS

The status of the Club as a premium institution in Singapore was again underlined when Mr S.R. Nathan a long-time member of the Club - was elected President of the Republic of Singapore in The millennium year saw a complete re-turfing and repair of the Padang field, including an improved drainage system. The year was also marked by the courtesy visit of His Royal Highness Prince Norodom Ranariddh from the Kingdom of Cambodia. In 2002, the Club celebrated its 150th anniversary with a year of festive activities organised by the specially formed anniversary committee. Among the highlights of the anniversary year was a charity golf match attended by Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong and Mrs Goh. The anniversary celebrations culminated with a gala dinner at the Padang on 5 October. On 1 December 2003, a year after the 150th anniversary, a Special General Meeting of Members approved the most extensive Club renovation since Work was completed three years later, and on 2 February 2007 the Club held a dinner to celebrate the renovation. The guest of honour was Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, who accepted the title of Visitor, making him the second recipient of that honorary title after Lee Kuan Yew in PSC Mesra Raya Dinner Time does fly fast, in the blink of an eye, Hari Raya and Merdeka Day is just around the corner. In conjunction with the joyous Merdeka-Raya occasion, the Club is inviting 46 girls from Wisma Anak Yatim Perempuan Islam Pulau Pinang to join in the fun and festivities at the PSC Mesra Raya Dinner Celebration. The dinner celebration will be held on 23 August 2013 at 7.30pm sharp, at the Multi-Purpose Hall. Wisma Anak Yatim Perempuan Islam was established by Y. Bhg. The girls housed at the home range from age 7 to 17 years, and are not only from Penang, but also from neighbouring states of Kedah and Perak. On this blissful time of the year, let us celebrate the gift of unity and do our part to give back to the community as well as to those in need. As they say, an act of kindness goes a long way, and our Club intend to uphold that saying, living up to our motto - Live Life. Today, the Club boasts a total of some 5,754 active members, of whom 3,136 are voting members. There are currently 13 sports sections in the Club, the largest being Golf (559 members), Tennis (463) and Squash (379).
