The water filter is a state project and this would be a good way to promote Elizabeth Burns the quilter presenting the special program in March. Come on Homemakers - you can do it! VISIT US ON THE WEB AT: November 9 (Saturday) 4-H Center Gala Thanks Thank you to everyone who provided drinks, juice and baked goods for the Making A Difference Conference on September 10 th. We had many compliments about the variety which was available to all participants. Also, a special thank you to the ladies who helped in setting up, serving and arranging the pastries, drinks and fruit salad. Carol Peckenpaugh

2 PAGE 2 Thought of the Month A smile costs nothing but gives much... It enriches those who receive, without making poorer those who give, It takes but a moment, but the memory of it sometimes lasts forever ~ Author Unknown What a beautiful weekend. The temperature dropped 10 degrees or so, turned the air conditioner off and opened the windows. I love this time of the year. Part of it has to do with the weather and the other part is I know our craft show is just around the corner. I always look forward to that weekend such a good weekend to be a homemaker. And speaking of the craft show are you as excited about it as I am? Have you told everyone you know? If you are on facebookcreate an event for the craft show and invite everyone you know (thanks Martha- Creative Critters for the suggestion). A big thank you to the Creative Critters for putting up all the signs. I am normally a West Sider and venture to the North Side occasionally and I have seen the signs everywhere. I had occasion to venture to the east side and even saw the signs there. Way to go Creative Critters. Now back to the Craft Show- what are you and the other members of your club bringing for the Homemakers craft table? We always have such neat and unique items. Can t wait to see what we have this year. I have already What s Happening talked to some of you just to make sure you are bringing your specialty. Like Evie and her puppy chow, Marva and the monster cookies, Forever Gingham and the spiders, Gloria and her cookies on a stick, and I am sorry I don t remember which of the (Mr) Honey Bees (Mr Kemper or Mr Peckenpaugh made that wonderful bread last year), and Betty always brings some needle work that is grabbed up as soon as it hits the table, and our past state president, Jean, even though she is in India, made sure she had her pickles and tea rings ready before she left now that s dedication! There are many more items that have been donated Linda always brings fresh vegetables and several of our members bring the no bake cookies which are always a big hit. I know I failed to mention your specialty and for that I apologize - but please bring it - don t deprive the buyers that are at our craft show of your special item just because I have a lousy memory. We need your talent and appreciate all that you do. And speaking of all you do have you volunteered to work? Your help is needed. Call Linda Deig and volunteer. She has the perfect spot for you. If you see Shannon (Forever Gingham) at the Craft show and she seems more frazzled than usual I don t know why someone in charge of the publicity and the vendor registration would be frazzled-please cut her some slack. She has a grandson due any day and she is sure that it will happen during the craft show. But rest assured there is a backup plan in place. Rachel and Susie (Forever Gingham) have been working with Shannon for a couple years and will be able to cover if needed. Volunteer Vic had a meeting with the Craft show chairmen this past week. Nancy was there to make sure everything about the food is good to go, Shannon was there as vendor registration, Joan was there to discuss the layout and marking of the spots and Linda was there to talk about the volunteers. I think there were others coming but at this point I had to leave as I had another commitment. It sounded like everything was coming together nicely. I want to leave you with one thought - THIS IS OUR CRAFT SHOW. Get excited about it! Now on to what s happening. Last year Carol P. challenged all the executive PURDUE UNIVERSITY

3 OCTOBER 2013 What s Happening (Cont.) council to attend a meeting of a club other than their own. This past month I had the opportunity to attend the Hornville...AGS meeting. This was the meeting before there Community Wide Yard Sale. Boy are these homemakers organized. It was amazing to see them in the planning stages. Granted they have done this for several years but it is still a big event. And I was just flabbergasted by how they had everything so together. They even signed a new member at that meeting. The HAGS are definitely a group to take notice of. Since we last visited the HAGS have had their community wide yard sale. What a huge undertaking and what an awesome success. Look for their article in Scribbles. Also we had our Making a Difference Day. I will tell you at first I was not a fan of the time chosen but was able to get things re-arranged at work and was able to attend. And what a fantastic day. I believe Susan told me there were approx. 80 homemakers in attendance. I hope you were able to be there. I saw a lot of Vanderburgh County Extension Homemakers there. And Carol, a Honey Bee and an awesome county President coordinated a great breakfast. I know I saw Linda and MaryAnn of the Honey Bees and Janet Wagner of Producers helping her. Carol had put out an appeal at our Council meeting the week before and she had a great response from the Homemakers. What an awesome spread. Thank you. The keynoter was very educational and entertaining. I learned how to take care of my knives and how to peel a pineapple. A very good choice. And then we had the opportunity to pick the session we wanted to attend. There were sessions on happiness, financial stress, and also sessions on nourishing your bones, your skin, your eyes and your digestive system. It was hard choosing but there were 2 other members from my club there so between the 3 of us (thanks Nancy and Diana) we were able to attend all the classes offered. I would hate to pick a favorite but Jane (Posey county) not only shared recipes but she had some for us to taste. That is always a plus. A very good day. There were several things discussed at the last council meeting that your club president will be telling you. There is one I have to tell you about. We have a great opportunity coming up on March 8 th. Elizabeth Burns spoke at State conference this year. She is a quilter who is blind. The ones who heard her can t stop talking about her. And we are going to have her in Evansville for an event. I can t wait. Mark it on your calendar. PAGE 3 Garbage Can Safety Did you get the new TOTER roll-out carts for garbage and recycling this year? Did you read the directions for using them? Do you remember what you read? Number two on the Safe Use and Care List tells how to move your TOTER. It states; Make sure the cart lid is closed. Grab the handle with both hands and carefully tilt the cart towards you. Push or pull the cart to roll it. DO NOT drag the cart. DO NOT tilt or roll the cart with the lid open. Failure to follow this rule can cause much pain as I proved. There are nine rules on the list. Keep them posted in a handy spot and re-read often to prevent accidents when putting out your trash and recyclables. Submitted by: Jean Hitchcock, Leadership, Health, Safety and Citizenship Committee Beanbags Needed The Extension HHS program is in need of 180 (3 x 3 inch) beanbags to use during the physical activity component of nutrition programs we teach. The bags will be divided among five staff. The bags need to be filled with 1 cup of rice. If we could get five clubs who would be willing to make 30 bags each, that would be fantastic. or call me if your club would be willing to donate beanbags. Thanks! Susan Plassmeier, HHS Educator

We celebrate this day to bring attention and help us remember the original mission of Smiley, to reflect what we all hope and wish to see on the face of others a SMILE. On this day all the people around the world are thoughtful of others, use the power of smile and a little act of kindness make a small difference in the world in which we all live. In 1963, Harvey Ball, an artist from Worcester, Massachusetts created the yellow color smiley face. The image became the most recognizable symbol of good will and happiness on the planet. In 1999, Harvey Ball thought for a World Smile Day, when he found that his logo was becoming too commercial and losing its importance. He then declared that the first Friday of October every year, would be World Smile Day. He organized the day with the idea that we should devote one day every year to smiles and an act of kindness throughout the world. A smile knows no religion, no politics, and no geography and so we should spread happiness, moreover it does not take any effort to smile! First World Smile Day held in 1999, since then it has continued every year. This year it will be celebrated on October 4, When Harvey died in 2001, the Harvey Ball World Smile Foundation was formed to honor him. The Foundation is the official sponsor of World Smile Day each year, and raise money through donations. Site:
