1 From the President Newsletter Lisa Ikeda Newsletter April and Easter Season. Fife is in the process of planning our annual Easter Egg Hunt the Saturday before Easter which is April 15th this year. Wally is again predicting sunny weather but if he feels any moisture in the air as we approach the last age group there has been evidence he may release them a little early. I was out of town but hopefully Fife was well represented at the Spring Conference his last weekend. Were there any good April Fools Jokes on Saturday? This is the first one in a long time I missed and the hardest part is missing all my Lions friends from other clubs and meeting new ones. Hopefully all that went had a great time. I m sure we will see a report from Lisa. Big thanks to Bill and Lisa plus PDG Dave Risley from Poulsbo and ZC Patti Lovell from Puyallup Valley who on short notice stepped up and supported the eye screening at Hedden Elementary. I stopped by Wednesday and was impressed with the efficiency on how they worked. The devices Dave brought quickly scanned and gave readings that were tracked and provided to the school for follow up. Dave also provided a hearing screening devise for another volunteer group. This allowed that group to do 3 tests at a time. Over the two days these Lions screened 396 kids. This is what Lions are all about. Remember we will be doing screening at Discovery starting April 18th thru 20th. I will be more involved in that one. Hope you ll join me. 3 Club News: Congratulations to Walter (Wally) Felice for being a Fife Lions Member for 25 years. Congratulations Thomas Erker and William (Bill) Barnett for 10 years. District, Zone and Club Newsletters: Joe Felice and Fife Lions Scholarships A recipient is selected from the Fife High School Scholarship Foundation selection committee. Linda Dorris (Fife Lions Steve Dorris s wife) sits on the selection committee. Applicants are selected from graduating high school seniors who will attend college or technical school. These students demonstrate good attendance, citizenship and service to others. One student will receive the $ award. The $ is provided by the Fife Lions Club, $ in remembrance of long time member Joe Felice (Wally and Alex s dad) and another $ on behalf of the Fife Lions. In May, the school hosts an Awards Banquet to honor all the students receiving awards. 4 Centennial Celebration News Lions is just a great organization. As we approach 100 years, this process gets more and more exciting. Our entertainment is under control, Vendors are taking shape, 20 Lions Clubs and 20 outside vendors, we are having a diabetes screening and the new health trailer is on board. DuPont businesses that have been procured as vendors are: McNamaras, Farrellis, Forzas, and the Fairfield Suites. If you want a room August 11 th or August 12 th, contact the Fairfield for a reservation. Ask for the Centennial rate of $110/night, plus tax. To get this rate you must make your reservation by July 12th. They have a King bed room or double queen bedrooms available. In our district so far, we have 12 clubs who will have earned 3 Centennial Service Project Patches come July 1 st. We have another 4 who need to do one more project this year to be able to earn their 3 rd four stone patch. We will have another 6 clubs who will earn a 4 stone patch this year. We also have 9 clubs who need to do one more service project to earn the four stone patch. This states we have 32 clubs who will earn or are close to earning a four stone patch. Get to work and do that one project you need. Be PROUD TO SERVE. WE MAKE A DIFFERENCE. Secretaries please report these projects t LCI. I am AWARE of 32 clubs who have a Centennial Service Project. Bob Johnson Centennial Celebration Chair Food Bank Request List: Canned beans, dry beans, peanut butter, or other nut butters, rolled oats, canned fruit in natural juice, not in light or heavy syrup, canned vegetables, with no or low-sodium, low-sodium soups, canned tuna in water, chili meat and vegetarian, boxed cereal, mac and cheese, cereal bars, cup of soup, diapers, cat and dog food are also needed. Thank you! Eye Screenings at Hedden Elementary School in Edgewood. The Fife Lions: Bill Barnett, Lisa Ikeda, Zone Chair Patti Lovell and PDG David Risley, NW Lions Foundation volunteered two days serving (18 classes, grades 2 nd, 3 rd and 5 th. 5 Convention News and Highlights The Convention started with Golf and Bowling with a few in attendance. One signature seminar was held Friday afternoon before the Cabinet meeting and dinner. Saturday was a full day with Opening Plenary sessions, followed by six seminars that were offered 10:15am to 11:00am, another six seminars 11:15am to noon and lastly another two after lunch. One was volunteering at the local Thurston Co Food Bank. The District goal is to collect food donations at all major District functions. Thank you Rebecca for helping at the food bank. Sunday, those serving on the Cabinet held their introductory meeting; Lisa Ikeda will serve as District Cabinet Secretary. Brieanna Berg Enumclaw Lions will serve as C3 Zone Chair and Dorothy Burt Federal Way Lions as C3 Associate Zone Chair. In attendance from the Fife Lions: Sam Adams, Lisa Ikeda, Angela Davis, Bob Johnson, Rebecca Anderson and Jon Homiak. Lisa and Angela were both served as Delegates at this years elections, our club was allotted 3 Delegates. Elections were held for non-contested seats of DG, 1 st VDG, 2 nd VDG, International Director, NW Lions Foundation and changes to the MD19 Bylaws. Sam who helped volunteer when needed. Three-featured guest speakers and the highlights of the convention included Delena Meyer, who is an At Risk Youth - Life Coach who conducted a Friday afternoon signature seminar, then spoke at dinner. Breakfast at Sally s author Richard LeMieux, who spoke about his personal journey through Homelessness at lunch on Saturday. International Director and real-estate attorney from Alabama Jerome Thompson who spoke at Saturday s session about revitalizing energy into small clubs and about his passion for Lions in the District Governor Banquet. Congratulations to Lisa Ikeda who won Zone Person of the Year, for Zone C3 receiving a 2017 Lions Club International Centennial Silver Dollar with Melvin Jones image and on behalf of Fife Lions, Second Place for Club Bulletin, Angela Davis who won District Governors Let Your Light Shine Certificate and Rebecca Anderson who won International Presidents; Certificate of Appreciation. Bob Johnson won an Awesomeness Certificate for singing during Fun Night. 5
