1 Newsletter of the PROBUS Club of Presqu ile March 2017 P.O. Box 606, Brighton, Ontario K0K 1H0 Northumberland PROBUS: probusnorthumberland.com PROBUS Canada: probus.org/canada.htm Next Monthly Meeting: March 15 th Doors Open: 9:30 A.M. for Coffee Fellowship. Meeting: A.M. Acting President s Message Hi Everyone, Welcome to March. As the days get longer and the nights shorter, anticipation grows that spring is just around the corner. Now March is more than just another month, and is more than the beginning of Spring for PROBUS members it is a very special month, IT IS NATIONAL PROBUS MONTH. The motto for National PROBUS Month this year is BE A FRIEND, BRING A FRIEND. This is the perfect time to invite that friend or neighbour of yours, who would like to see what is going on (and why you have so much fun) when you attend our monthly PROBUS meeting. And this month all guests will be admitted FREE!! That s right, all guests this month ARE NOT charged at the door!! So be sure to bring at least one guest (or more), all are very welcome! March is also the time of year, when even more of our members head south, as the beaches and golf courses of the Carolinas are now warm enough (at least for Canadians) to enjoy some warmer weather activities. Those of us who remain behind miss you, (ok, maybe we are a little jealous too) and would like to hear from you, and how you are doing. So before our meeting on March 15 th, it would be great if all members who are away, would myself (djcrouch@hotmail.com) or our newsletter editor, Don, (don.linda.young@hotmail.com). Tell us where you are and how you are doing (hopefully having an enjoyable winter) and we will inform the members at the meeting (we will not use your name if you prefer us not too). Hope to see everyone on the 15 th and remember bring a Friend. Let s show everyone that the PROBUS Club of Presqu ile is Friendly and Welcoming. David Crouch

4 SOCIAL COMMITTEE REPORT DINNER THE COBOURG BEST WESTERN FEB. 5TH, 2017 On Sunday February 5 th, approximately 22 PROBUS Members travelled to the Best Western in Cobourg for the Dinner Theatre presentation of Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike. Prior to the play, we all sat down to enjoy the all you can eat Buffet Dinner that included; carved meats, salads, potatoes, gravy, sides, etc. etc., and oodles of desserts. Incredible!! All this food Plus the good fellowship of both old and new PROBUS friends; it could not get any better. Like our previous visit to this venue in October, 2016, the play was again a production by the Northumberland Player s; a very competent group of actors that have entertained in our counties for several years. The play was very entertaining, but for some of us, maybe not quite as funny as our October, 2016 visit. Conversely, for many others the presentation was wonderful; as evidenced by this play winning a Tony Award for Best Play in The food and our seating was exceptional, all our group being located right in front of the stage so as not to miss a moment of this play. The Dinner Theatre at the Cobourg Best Western is certainly well worth a return visit in the future.

She provided a very entertaining and very amusing presentation regarding the very serious problem of hoarding; something that we can all associate with to some degree. It was interesting to discover that many of our treasures would be considered junk by our children and her recommendation was that we enjoy them now. Many Thanks to Carol for providing a very interesting and educational presentation

8 PROGRAM COMMITTEE REPORT March 15 th, 2017 March s Topic: Mass Marketing Fraud and Cybercrime Awareness Presentation by: The RCMP and the Canadian Anti- Fraud Centre We will be hearing a presentation by the RCMP and the Canadian Anti- Fraud Centre covering Mass Marketing Fraud, Identity Theft, Romance and other scams and how to avoid them. Nearly 80 percent of mass marketing fraud is conducted by organized crime groups and is currently the second most common criminal activity funding terrorist activities. The presentation was developed by CAFC Senior Unit Volunteer: Brock Godfrey, RCMP Corporal Lori MacDonald, and RCMP Constable Jennifer George. It is delivered by one or two of them to senior s groups, Service Clubs and Professional Organizations across Southern Ontario. We also work with a number of other Police Groups or individuals in Ontario and British Columbia. BIO: BROCK GODFREY The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, North Bay. Brock took early retirement in 1993 from the Ontario Ministry of Education, after 30 years in education. He joined PhoneBusters in 1997 as a Volunteer SeniorBuster. He has been instrumental in educating the public and raising awareness of illegal mass marketing fraud and Id theft: which is clearly the most successful and effective long-term strategy in reducing the number of fraud victims. Brock received the Superintendent s Award of Distinction from the RCMP for his work in making Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre presentations about this topic.
