5 Page 5 UGHS Athletics News Wolverine Nation, Another season has come and gone. This winter we saw the addition of a new sport at Union Grove with swimming as well as the competition of basketball and wrestling. Here is an update of the 3 sports and some of the great things they have accomplished. As you read these, think about the time and effort our athletes and coaches have sank into being successful both in the classroom and on the court, mat or water. Basketball: Both boys and girls finished with a record of The record does not speak for the hard work, dedication and commitment of our players and coaches. This season our seniors played in front of the largest crowds we ve seen in a while. They battled tough against county rivals and persevered. Our boy s team won the Union Grove Christmas Round Robin by beating Pike and Hampton. This year, Ronald Blain- Slaughter will sign to go play basketball choosing either San Diego Christian, Costal GA or California State. Union Grove put 2 players on the All-Region Honorable Mention list with Ronald & Shadae Tate. It was a great season and we send a special thank you to Coach Atkins & Coach Gammage for running our basketball programs. And another thank you to Coach Butler, Coach Tarplin, Coach Bice and Coach Sapp for their supporting roles in our program. Swimming: This was the inaugural year for swimming at Union Grove, and man we tore it up! We finished the season with 3 meets won out of the 5 we competed in and as the Henry County Swim Championship Runner-Up. It was funny to watch Coach Bates go from being laid back and just happy for the girls, to then one of the most competitive coaches we have in our building and a taste for victory. Lisa and Coach Horton did a phenomenal job in helping not only our girls, but also swimmers across the county. We had swimmers with about 1 second away from making the state cutoff time, in Kaylee Haake and Alyssa Hearn. If you came to one of the meets you saw how intense they can be. Please congratulate all of our swimmers on setting the bar very high and achieving excellence in their first ever swim season. Wrestling: WHAT A YEAR? I know I will forget something, but wrestling had a great winter season. As a team in duals we placed in the top 6 of the state in 5A. We won the South Metro Duals hosted by Luella. We finished 2nd in a few tournaments in Tennessee, Virginia and Florida. As a team in the individual portion of wrestling we finished as Area 5 Champions and we sent 8 to the state tournament and 7 placed in the top 6. Ian Schumacher & Luke Vinson finished 5th, Noah Craft and AJ Spencer finished 4th, Davion Fairly finished 3rd, Luke Parker was the state runner up and JUSTIN RUFFIN is our 132lb STATE CHAMPION! As a team we were 2pts away from finishing as state runner up (it s been the year of 2 points so far. 2pts from Cheer State Champion and 2pts from Wrestling State Runner-Up). Please congratulate all of our wrestlers and coaches. I want to especially thank Coach Ferrari, Coach Kollert and Coach Washington on a job well done this season! What a year so far huh? We have a #7 boys cross country team, #4 Softball team, #3 Wrestling team and a state runner up in Comp Cheer. We have seen volleyball move on to post season play and we look forward to what the spring has to offer! When I say it s great to be a Wolverine, it truly is. We are fortunate to have some of the best coaches around spending countless hours away from their families and working to mold our athletes into great young men and women! It s great to be a Wolverine! Go Grove! Nick Ellis, UGHS Athletic Director

6 UGHS Athletics News, continued... Page 6 Wolverine Parent Corner: Parking & Parent Expectations, Spring is the busiest time of the year for athletics at Union Grove. We will be fielding 19 teams that range from varsity to 9th grade. This requires a lot of planning and work on all ends. Please work with us on parking by not parking in the bus lane for baseball & tennis. We have a lot that has access to parking across from the baseball field in the back of the school. If you would utilize this lot we can help keep the road crossing safe and clear for athletes and busses. Please represent your kids and our program well as we travel and play at events. We hold our athletes to a high level of expectations on the field and off. When we play at visiting stadiums we represent what Union Grove stands for and we have to show good sportsmanship and support in all ways possible. Every athlete has to have a current physical, insurance & consent form as well as a concussion form before they can participate in any athletic team at UGHS. These forms can be found on UGHS webpage, under athletics and then forms. Player Participation fees have dropped to per athlete. Union Grove Athletic Department strives to produce committed, hardworking and scholarly student athletes who work towards excellence in leadership, competition and team values while in the classroom and in their sport. It s great to be a Wolverine! Mr. Nick Ellis, UGHS Athletic Director Roofing Residential Commercial Westridge Pkwy Suite 223; McDonough, GA 30253

9 Page 9 Take it from me there is one person in this school that can get our kids hyped up for a game like no other. That person is our very own Herman Singleton. Nope, he is not a teacher, coach or administrator and he is no celebrity in the community. Herman is one of great custodians who help maintain our building. He is a celebrity here at Union Grove and if you ve ever been to a football game and heard the kids chanting We got Herman..we got Herman then you know who I m talking about. We got Herman and we are giving him a section in the monthly newsletters to talk about what he wants, called Hype with Herman, and here it goes: Often people don t finish what they start. They get going and then when times get tough they slow down and then eventually quit. Herman is a man who feels like he hasn t finished! Even after a time of work in the military, retired from working in one industry and right back here working, Herman feels like he hasn t finished what he started. When I was a kid, parents didn t let you quit stuff. Whatever you started like work, school or a sport you didn t quit. Herman seems to think that now a days there are so many distractions that kids find other things to do. With so much to keep a kid busy, sometimes it s hard for them to see the importance of sticking through something even when it s tough. He likens it to the summer, where people love the water and sunshine, but let it get a little too hot and everyone starts to complain and stop playing outside and retreat indoors. It s the summer.in Georgia. It s gonna be hot! explains Herman. Kids need to know that times are going to get tough and there will be days where it would be easier to quit whatever it is that is tough. However, there is value and livable lessons for finishing something. So I asked Herman, What is your challenge for this month? He explained that he wants all of his favorite students & athletes to know that when the going gets tough the tough get going. Just because we are close to the end of the school career for seniors, they need not slow down and start to think about doing something else. They need to finish the drill and finish the best way they can. As for all the sports teams we have in the spring, they need to finish the drill and go get a state title. And for all others Herman s says, Finish the drill whatever it is that you started! Herman s Challenge Finish the Drill finish what you start Go Wolverines

10 Page 10 UGHS Athletics News, continued... Cheerleading News Congratulations to the Union Grove High School Varsity Cheerleaders for making it to the Top Three Finalists for Georgia Cheerleading Team of the Year! While the cheerleaders did not win, we are extremely proud of their accomplishment in making it to the top three programs in the state. The teams were judged based on school spirit and interactions, community service, program strength and academic achievement and honors. To be among the top three teams in the state is certainly something to be proud of. Our cheerleaders are very committed to service as seen in the work they do with the Special Olympics, Henry County Special Needs Pageant, MYA Cheer Program, the Gladiators cheer program and various other outreach projects, like the annual Junior Wolverines Camps and Clinics. Additionally, they continue to provide support to our school teams and assist teachers during pre and post planning with tasks in their classrooms. We are most impressed that our girls are so involved as a group, and also as individuals as they are involved in various school clubs and organizations, other sports and even work while maintaining an impressive 3.75 team GPA. The UGHS cheer video that was presented as a finalist for the team of the year can be viewed by following this link: The Cheerleaders were recognized earlier this year by the Henry County Board of Education for their Runner-Up finish at the State Cheer Competition and KBN Television named them Henry County Cheer Team of the Year. Additionally, 2 members of the team, Marissa Budreau and Ragan Pollock were named to the All Region Team and Ragan Pollock was named to the All State Team. Tryouts for the 2015 season will take place April pm-8pm in the UGHS Gym. An informational meeting for those interested and their parent will be held March 17th at 7pm in the UGHS Media Center. All those interested in trying out should attend this meeting. If you have a dress, suit or dress suit you would like to donate, please contact Coach Kelli Smith at kelli.smith@henry.k12.ga.us All sizes and styles are welcome. Ms. Kelli Smith, Varsity Head Cheerleading Coach
