1 SUNSHINE COAST SPINNERS AND WEAVERS GUILD AGM MEETING MINUTES DATE: June 5, 2017 ST. JOHN S UNITED CHURCH, DAVIS BAY, BC. Present: President-Merrily Corder Vice President- Dianne Lim Secretary- (acting) Joan Fletcher Treasurer- Pam Coxall 1. Welcome: was extended to new member Leah Mortenson, who has lived previously in Turkey for 16 years, expert on Central Asian textiles 2. Call to Order: -any errors or omissions in minutes from last meeting? -minutes adopted 3. President s Report: - We celebrated our 30 year anniversary by honouring some special guests: Jane Davidson who was instrumental in bringing the guild into being way back in 1987 and continued to be very active in the guild until recently. Nim Rublee was the very first secretary of the guild and also was very active throughout the years. Jane was present to be honoured, although Nim Rublee was absent for health reasons. We then recognized Jane Hodgeson and Joan Marshal who were founding members as well and are still active members today. We also presented a Life Membership award to Shirley Hall. Shirley has contributed immensely to the guild since her first meeting on January 6, Since that time, Shirley s name appears in the minutes of most meetings with ideas and suggestions of how to keep the guild growing! By April of her first year she was displaying items in show and tell. (It is reported in the minutes that the buttons on her handspun sweater were worth more than the wool! ) and by 1995 she had become president. She has continued to this very day organizing guild projects such as Teddy Bears for the ambulance service and hats for Covenant House. 4. Business Arising from the Minutes: n/a 5. Treasurer s Report: $5, Correspondence: Ann Harmer received a nice letter from the Pender Harbour Community School thanking us for a $625. donation from the IFFS for the purchase of fabric bags. Ann has the bags and we can discuss how to use them at the September meeting

2 7. Upcoming Dates: 1. Southern Spin-in: date: Tues., June 20 at: Deannna's Tues., July 18 at: Lynda or Barbie's Tues., August 15 at: Troche's 2. Northern Spin-in: date: Thurs, June 29 with potluck at Yurts 3. Next Guild Meeting: Monday, September 11 Thurs.July 27 at yurts Thurs.August 31 at yurts 8. Interest Groups: -IFFS- n/a -ANWG: Doreen is gathering the Fibreshed items for display at ANWG. The ANWG display team will borrow the black tablecloths from the guild. 9. Membership: see #1 above. 10. Equipment: We would like to propose the guild purchase a canopy for guild events that interest groups could use when needed. To date we have borrowed members canopies but they are not always available and not always easy to assemble and there is wear on tear. The modern canopies are quick to assemble. Cost Co has one that has been recommended. It is approximately $600. for a useful size. A motion to purchase a canopy was moved. seconded and carried. We are considering refurbishing the drum carder. 11. Grants and Awards: Kathy Gray and Nancy Cuthbert have applied for grants. Ann has passed their letters to Deanna for presentation. 12. Standards/Jury 13. Archivist: work is proceeding on filing the photographs in albums 14. Librarian: n/a 15. Newsletter: n/a 16. Website: n/a

3 17. Fibreshed: Fibreshed members joined Kim at her table under a Tim Horton s Canopy at the Makers Faire in Gibsons on Sunday, July 28. Lots of interest and new contacts. Kim, Doreen, Joan Fletcher and Merrily had a fun full day of spinning and knitting and chatting to the public. 18. Programs: -Workshops: The workshop on 'Spinning to Knit' (how to estimate and spin the correct amount of handspun yarn for a project) by Jeannie Pataky was inadvertently omitted from the newsletter and will therefore be re-scheduled for October. 19. Other -Blanket Project: -Fibrecamp -Fibres Plus Sale 20. Announcements: a) Our officers will remain the same until the June 2018 election with the exception of Joan Fletcher who will act as secretary. b) Merrily spoke to Marguerite.
