1 WOOL GATHERINGS The Monthly Newsletter of the Golden Fleece Spinners Society The mission of the Society is to preserve and perpetuate the art of hand spinning; to promote interest in spinning by educating the public through demonstrations, lectures, displays, and news/social media; and to provide instruction and social life in spinning for its members. Next Meetings: Saturday March 17, 2018, 10:00 AM Grace Episcopal Church Baldwinsville, NY Annual Auction Bring your coffee mug and bag lunch Hostess: Linda Brust, Treats: Meg Welch, Linda Brust The meeting this month is our annual fund raising auction. Please bring two or more items to be auctioned off by our own auctioneer Christina Rotondo and helper Emily Monette. We always have a wide variety of donated items so bring your wallet and a guest to join in the fun. As an added bonus, Vickie Marchand has generously donated a $50 gift card to Webs to be awarded to the person who spends the most money, with the stipulation they must be present to win. Plan on arriving early in order to display your donations and get a good view of all the items prior to the start of the auction. It s time to sign up to demonstrate at the following festivals. Please consider demonstrating, it s part of our community outreach, it s fun and it still leaves you plenty of time to shop: June 9-10 September 8-9 September CNY Fiber Festival, Saturday and Sunday, Bouckville, NY Golden Harvest Festival, Beaver Lake, Baldwinsville, NY Finger Lakes Fiber Festival, Hemlock, NY FEBRUARY MEETING President Jill Robinson called the business meeting to order. Treasurer's Report $ balance Meeting Hostess We still need a hostess for the May meeting, see the signup sheet.
2 Fiber Frolic There is a signup sheet for volunteers to mark the vendor spaces on Friday afternoon and to help vendors and sell raffle tickets during the frolic on Saturday. The guild approved $100 for advertising on Facebook for the frolic. Angela Mann will track the responses. Amy King Workshop The guild will be hosting workshops by Amy King June 23rd and 24th. At the end of the newsletter you ll find the registration form and description of the classes. Note that your registration form must be postmarked March 1st or later and mailed to Sue Jones, 404 Sixth St, Liverpool, NY Class assignments will be sent out by between April 15 th and May 1 st with the amount you owe for the class material fees (the guild is paying half of the fee). Payment will be due at or before the May meeting or you will forfeit your spot. March Auction Thank you to Christina Rotondo for volunteering to be the auctioneer and to Emily Monette for being Vanna. Fiber Festival Bus Trip Options discussed were the New England Fiber Festival, Rhinebeck and the Adirondack Wool and Arts Festival. The Northeast Handspinners Association Gathering is the same weekend as the New England Fiber Festival and the consensus was not to go to Rhinebeck. One option is to organize car pools to the Adirondack Wool and Arts Festival in Greenwich, NY on Sunday September 23 rd since the guild meeting would be the day before. Demonstrations Enough people said they d be interested in demonstrating at the Finger Lakes Fiber Festival so Joyce Lock will send in the registration form for the guild. FREE GIVEAWAYS Clay and equipment for button making. Dedicated toaster oven, "noodle maker" for flattening out the clay, box of clay. 5 SOCK IT TO ME The sock yarn you make now is ok but you know it could be better. Maybe you haven't even ventured into making sock yarn because you're not sure it's going to hold up. What materials do I use? How do I spin it so it's sturdy but not rope-like? We'll answer these questions and more. You'll walk out of the class ready to make an excellent sock yarn. STUDENT - Please bring a wheel in good working order with 4 (5 is even better) or more bobbins. Bring a ball winder if you don't have a lot of bobbins. It's also helpful to have a Niddy Noddy and a Lazy Kate. You must be capable of making yarn and have a good working knowledge of the wheel and be comfortable with basic spinning instructions. This is an intermediate class. STUDIO Length: Full Day Class Class Size Limit: students. Materials fee: $32 ALL THE SINGLE...YARNS Anyone that knows me, knows I love my singles yarns. Thin, energized, worsted, bulky, fancy, even, thick/thin...all of them. If you like them too and want to make better singles that are not meant for plying then this is the class. I'll go over how to make the singles, how to tell if you're going about it right, how to perfect them and how to finish them off. This is a fun class and some things may be more surprising if you've never made singles yarns. At the end of class if time allows, we'll go over how to use the singles in garments to get predictable results. STUDENT Please bring a wheel in good working order with 3 or more bobbins. If you have a wheel that has extra whorls, bring them. It's also helpful to have a Niddy Noddy and a Lazy Kate. You must have a good working knowledge of the wheel and be comfortable with basic spinning instructions. This is an intermediate class. STUDIO Length: Half Day Class Class Size Limit: 20 students. Materials fee: $24 LONGDRAW TRUTH OR DARE I'll tell you all the truths and then you need to dare to trust the twist! We'll expand your drafting horizons. Even if you walk out of this class not loving the true long draw, we'll be working on all the drafting methods between short and long draws. You'll have a new appreciation and new abilities for working with your wheel and mastering that twist with several different types of fibers. STUDENT - Please bring a wheel in good working order with 3 or more bobbins. It's also helpful to have a Niddy Noddy and a Lazy Kate. You must have a good working knowledge of the wheel and be comfortable with basic spinning instructions. This is an intermediate class. STUDIO - Length: Half Day Class Class Size Limit: 15 students. Materials fee: $22
