The next few months will be filled with many festive and fun events in our community! The first half of October will feature Landon Ridge Kingwood s first ever Sagora Games. Make sure to sign up and join in for some exciting and fun-filled competition. Residents will be competing for various medals and prizes throughout the two-week period. Our theme for this month is Spice It Up. I don t know about you, but I love foods with a spicy kick. Whether it s buffalo wings, Mexican food or even my favorite spicy ketchup from What-A-Burger, everything is always better with a little extra zing! That can be true in you daily life too. This month let s focus on stepping out of our comfort zone and adding a little spice to your life or the life of others in the community. Say hello to someone you may not often speak to. Leave a note or card for a neighbor who hasn t been out of their apartment lately. Try out something different on the menu, or attend one of the lunch bunch outings and treat yourself to a special meal with friends. Visit the Bistro during the mid-afternoon and enjoy a cup of coffee with your neighbors. Live in the present because it s the little things that sometimes make such a big difference. Here s to a spicy fall season! Christopher Wiley, Executive Director Spicing up the Ordinary There comes a time in our lives when we feel like we are unable to find meaning in the things that we do every day. These are the seasons that we tend to feel tired of our normal routine. However, we need not be surprised if we are feeling such emotions, because the truth is, we were not designed to live boring lives. We were fearfully and wonderfully made, and each of us exist on this planet for a unique purpose. Every time you feel unsatisfied and unfulfilled, don't feel bad, but consider your circumstance to be an opportunity for you to spice up your life. While there are numerous ways you can make your life less boring, here are a few you can start with today. 1) Unleash the Child Within You - They say you don't stop playing because you grow old, but you grow old because you stop playing. Take the time to try something fun today. Play a game, watch a silly movie, or join in on a group activity. 2) Do Random Acts of Kindness - Send out thank you cards, give someone a compliment, or offer to help someone in need. Sometimes the only thing we need to feel good is to do good for others. 3) Commit to Exercise - There's no faster way to lift up the mood than exercise. Physical activities such as exercise and even walking promote the release of endorphins, also known as 'feel good' chemicals. If you feel bored most of the time, perhaps it's time to commit to exercising. Not only does exercise make you feel happy by boosting your mood, it also helps you by knowing you are doing right by your body. 4) Read a New Book - A good book can take you anywhere you dream. It opens your mind to new worlds without ever leaving the comfort of your cozy chair. Reading a good story can give you inspiration for your own life. COOkie AnyOne? October is Cookie Month Chocolate chip. White chocolate macadamia. Oatmeal. Snickerdoodle. Shortbread. Regardless of how many cookies exist, statistics show that the good-old chocolate chip remains the most popular homemade American cookie, with the most popular store-bought cookie being Nabisco s Oreo. In contrast, those who reside overseas seem to lean toward a homemade cookie that isn t chocolate chip. Most of the European favorites are of the shortbread variety some with almond flavor, others covered in milk or dark chocolate, and possibly even laced with fruit. Despite those differences, however, cookie monsters all over the world have one thing in common: Oreos. It appears as if the Oreo tops the list of world-famous cookies. This isn t surprising, since they are sold in more than 100 countries. Its maker, Nabisco, has produced nearly 500 billion of those babies since they were originally manufactured in That is an insane amount of cookies, which begs the question: What s your take on the Oreo? Is it your favorite cookie? If not, what is? This month we are spotlighting Landon Ridge AL Resident Barney Snell. Barney turned 97 years young on September 15th. He has lived a life full of adventure and he shares a smile with everyone he meets. Barney was born in Trinity, TX, and has lived in Texas all of his life, except while in the Navy. He is a proud Veteran having served during WWII on a tank transport ship in the Pacific. Barney recalls the day after he graduated high school and he went to sign up for the Navy. He and all of his fellow troops marched through a parade in downtown Houston. During the war, Barney took leave and came home long enough to marry his childhood sweetheart and love of his life, Wanda. Barney & Wanda were married nearly 70 years and were truly best friends and lifetime dancing partners. They have 3 children; Cheryl, Kathy, and Barney, Jr. He is also a grandfather to 9 grandchildren and 3 great grands. Family is a huge part of Barney's life and he spent many, many hours camping, swimming, traveling, and enjoying the outdoors with them. His kids recall him climbing trees along the river and diving in, camping in tents, and many trips to the 'Blue Hole' in Wimberly. After the Navy he took a job in the metallurgic department with Armco. He worked there for over 35 years and took an early retirement at 57 years old. That's when the fun really started. They traveled all over the US in an Airstream trailer, visiting all kinds of places along the way; including the home of Glenn Miller. They even drove to Alaska. Barney was a Grand Master of the Masonic Lodge in Northshore, TX. He was an avid dirt bike racer and even went skydiving on his 90th birthday. Barney is a proud Texan through and through, giving his children advice before meeting their spouses to always marry a 'Texan'! He loves high school and college football and is a HUGE Texas Longhorns fan. We are so glad Barney is a part of the Landon Ridge Kingwood family. 4 Living the Good Life Memory Care is "Spicing Things Up"! The holidays are at our fingertips! (And so is the cooler weather). We could not be more excited about our upcoming activities and adventures surrounding our theme for October, 'Spice it Up'. Memory Care will be hosting a salsa competition on Tuesday, October 23rd at 3:30 pm complete with judges and prizes to those with the best tasting salsa, so stop by and show us how you spice it up! We will also be making our own home-made spice mixes that will be available to purchase at the end of the month, and all proceeds with be donated to the Alzheimer's Association. Be sure to try them out! In addition to our monthly theme, we are also celebrating the Sagora Games the first two weeks of October. Everyone is welcome to join and sign up, or volunteer to help facilitate the games. Get ready for scavenger hunts, bowling outings, and cooking competitions led by our very own Culinary Director. Join us on October 18th for an adventure to the Downtown Aquarium, and on our monthly Memory Care lunch outing on October 11th. We will also be going to a pumpkin patch on October 25th to pick out our own pumpkins to paint for our Pumpkin Painting Competition. Be sure to vote for your favorite! The winners will be announced at our costume party on October 31st, so don't miss out! I am honored to be given the oppurtunity to make memories with our residents.
