ER COF AM LUCY EVANS (LUCY SIOP) A Bu Farw Mis Mawrth Dwethaf, Yn 92 Oed Cafodd ei geni yn Siop, Capel Dewi, a adnabyddir fel Cilrhiwiau, yn 1918, ac roedd yn un o chwech o blant. Roedd Lucy yn ddisgybl disglair yn yr ysgol, ond yn anffodus yr oedd Lucy yn sâl gyda ffliw adeg yr 11+. Ar ôl gadael yr ysgol yn 14, aeth Lucy i weithio ym Mhlas Waunifor fel morwyn. Yn hwyrach symudodd i Garthowen ym Mhontsian, cyn dod yn ôl i helpu yn y siop ar poptŷ yng Nghapel Dewi. Roedd ganddynt fan dosbarthu a oedd yn mynd o amglych ardal fawr yn gwerthu bara a byns. Nid yn unig oedd Lucy yn yrrwr fan, roedd hefyd yn dda fel mecanic, wrth helpu gyda damweiniau ochr-y-ffordd, megis tyllau mewn teiars, ac yn aml bu n crancio r fan pan nad oedd y batri yn medru ei ddechrau. Roedd yn aelod ffyddlon o Gapel Bethel, a buodd yn chwarae r organ yno am blynyddoedd, nes i r Capel gau n ddiweddar. Amser Nadolig yr oedd basar yn Neuadd yr Eglwys, i godi arian i r Capel, ac roedd Lucy ar teulu yn pobi llawer o gacennau a mins peis, ac roedd pobl yn ciwio o amgylch y stondin i w prynu. Roedd gan Lucy ateb i bawb. Gofynnodd menyw iddi un diwrnod Faint yw eich oedran Miss Evans? a r ateb a roddodd Lucy oedd Dwi run oedran am tafod, a blwyddyn yn hŷn na m dannedd. Gallem ysgrifennu llawer am Lucy, ond mae n rhaid dod i ben, fel byddai Lucy n dweud Os byddai n gweud popeth wrthych, mi fyddwch yn gwybod yr un faint a fi. In Memory Of Lucy Evans (Lucy Shop) Who died this March at the age of 92 years Lucy was born at The Shop, Capel Dewi, otherwise known as Cilrhiwiau, in She was one of six children. Lucy was a very bright pupil at school, but unfortunately when the 11+ was taking place, she was sick in bed with flu. So when she left school at 14, Lucy went to work at Waunifor Mansion as a servant. Later, she moved on to Garthowen at Pontsian, before finally coming back home to Capel Dewi to work in the family shop and bakery. They had a delivery van that went round a large area selling bread and buns. Not only was Lucy one of the van drivers, she was also a good mechanic. She would carry out road side repairs such as dealing with punctures and she would often crank-start the van when the battery wouldn t do the job. Lucy was a faithful member of Bethel Chapel. She was the organist there for many years until the Chapel closed. Each Christmas they held a bazaar at the Church Hall in aid of the Chapel for which Lucy and her family would bake a lot of cakes and mince pies. They were so tasty people used to queue all around the stall to buy them. Lucy always had an answer for everyone. One day a lady asked her, How old are you, Miss Evans? The answer Lucy gave was, I am the same age as my tongue and one year older than my teeth. There is so much you could write about Lucy, but I must come to a close. I ll finish with Lucy s own words: If I tell you everything, you ll know as much as I know. David Tom Morgan (Glaneinon) 4

HAPPY MEMORIES OF LUCY EVANS Lucy was a great friend to all the village. She ran the Capel Dewi village shop and Post Office for many years with her sister Annie. They were the last in the line of their family to run the shop which had been a family run business for many years. It was a wonderfully old fashioned place with shelving in dark mahogany, one 40 watt light and a traditional Welsh tiled floor. The only form of heating was a very old paraffin stove. The latch on the door, which is still there, had a very special sound to it. As the door opened it rang an old fashioned bell hanging above it. Either Lucy or Annie (or sometimes both together until Annie died) would appear from the house and find the biscuits and sweets or other basic commodities you wanted. In 1991 Lucy decided it was time to retire. I had space in Dewi Villa that could accommodate a shop and Post Office, so together we worked out a date so the village would not be without a shop. Lucy closed her shop down on March 31st 1991 and I opened the shop in Dewi Villa on April 1 st Every Thursday Lucy would appear in Siop y Sue as she called it to buy her weekly groceries, cash her pension and also it must be said to inspect what I was up to!! Sometimes Lucy had some kind words of praise for me, but on other occasions I was told off could do better!! Lucy s last days were spent in Allt-y-Mynydd nursing home. I would see her about three times a week, as my mother and aunt are also residents there. She was very popular with the staff and very well cared for. I will miss being able to visit her when I go to the home. Lucy has been a part of my life since When they were young, my sons Ross and Huw would visit Lucy s shop for sweets. She was lucky they paid her for her sweets I didn t get paid!!! Sue Andrews When I first moved into Capel Dewi in 1997, I had the privilege of talking with Lucy about her life. She recalled that when she was growing up here, her life revolved around her family and the immediate surrounding area. When talking about where she d travelled to throughout her life, Lucy told me that she d been to Swansea on a number of occasions and to Cardiff a few times, but when I asked her about London, she said, London yes, I ve heard of that. To this day I m still not sure if she wasn t having a little bit of fun at the newcomer s expense, which in itself showed Lucy s rich vein of gentle humour. What she told me showed that while the lives of a number of ladies of her generation really did revolve around her immediate locality, she never felt it limited her horizons. And it was those family and community relationships that lay at the heart of the richness of her life s experience. Lucy was a truly gracious and remarkable lady. Grahame Goshawk Universally respected by all who knew her over the years and widely liked, Lucy is very sadly missed. 5

Times Past in Pontsiân HEL ATGOFION GYDA MAGW EVANS Pan oeddwn yn blentyn yn Siop Pontsiân, tua diwedd y dauddegau, roedd pawb yn gysurus er ei fod yn amser caled iawn ag arian yn brin, ond roedd y gymdeithas yn glòs iawn a phawb yn helpu ei gilydd. Roedd Siop Pontsiân yn adeilad fawr, gyda r ffatri wlân, er bod honno wedi cau cyn fy amser i. Roedd rhanfwyaf o bobl y pentref yn gweithio yn y ffatri, neu r felin, yn edrych ar ôl ceffylau neu yn y siop. Roedd y siop wedi ei rhannu, gyda stâr yn y canol, gydag un ochr yn gwerthu dillad ar pen arall yn gwerthu nwyddau o fwyd i hoelion, unrhywbeth i ddyn ac anifail. Roedd siop Pontsiân yn enwog am werthu popeth, o bin bach i feic. Roeddem yn gwerthu dillad plant, dillad priodas neu dillad angladd. Fyddai r siop ar agor tan wyth neu naw o r gloch. Arferai ffermwyr ddod lawr ar ôl swper yn cario basgedaid o wyau ac yna ei lanw â nwyddau i fynd adref. Fel arfer fyddai owns o faco yn y basged os oedd dyn yn y teulu. Roedd yr wyau yn ddigon i dalu am y nwyddau am fod yr wyau tua dimai yr un. Yr oedd adeg y Nadolig yn adeg prysur iawn, gyda cardiau dimai yr un yn cael eu harddangos, yna cardiau ceiniog mewn bocs ar y cownter, roedd yna rai dwy geiniog ar gael hefyd ond nid oedd pawb yn medru fforddio rhain am ei fod yn arian mawr am garden. Adeg yma fyddem yn cael y moethau canlynol i fewn i r siop ar gyfer y Nadolig, sef orennau (Jaffa,) afalau coch, grawnwyn, a oedd yn dod mewn clwstwr mewn gasgen fach, yna fe fyddai cnau, â r cnau mwnci a r Brazils yn dod mewn sachau mawr. Arferai r plant cael cnau a ffrwythau, ambell i ddôl glwtyn neu degan pren yn ei sanau wrth santa. Roedd hi n amser prysur yn y Swyddfa Bost gan fod llawer o ffermwyr yn postio gŵyddau i w perthnasau a i ffrindiau a oedd yn byw yn y trefydd. Roedd ambell i ffarmwr cofiwch yn dod ar ŵydd heb ei phacio yn gobeithio y byddai mam yn ei pacio iddynt! Gŵydd oedd gan y rhan fwyaf i ginio Nadolig. Nid oedd sôn am dwrci yr adeg hynny, gan taw ond y cyfoethog oedd yn gallu ei fforddio. Amser gwyliau fyddai plant y pentref ar y sgwâr yn disgwyl y post gan obeithio y fyddai yna garden neu anrheg iddynt oddi wrth perthynas a oedd yn byw ymhell. Roedd tri dyn post yn mynd allan bob dydd, gan gynnwys dydd Nadolig, ac ar y diwrnod hwnnw, os yn lwcus, cânt ginio ar un o r ffermydd. Fe fyddai cwrdd yn yr Eglwys fore Nadolig. Yna noson Nadolig fe fyddai cyngerdd yn Hen Gapel Llwynrhydowen, tyrrai pobl o bob cwr o r wlad, pawb yn cerdded am nad oedd llawer o geir i w gael. Teimlaf ei fod yn drueni nad yw r cyngerdd yn cael ei gynnal mwyach am fod y teledu wedi cymeryd drosodd, ac o ganlyniad nid yw cymdeithas mor glòs ac y bu. Er bod arian yn brin, mae n rhaid cofio ei fod yn amser hapus iawn! Magw Evans 6

REMINISCING WITH MAGW EVANS OF PONSTIÂN When I was a young girl living in Pontsiân shop, towards the end of the 1920 s, everyone was happy and comfortable, although it was a very difficult time as money was scarce, but the community was a close one with everyone helping each other. The shop was a large building with a woollen mill attached, although that was closed before my time. Most of the villagers worked in the factory, the mill, looking after horses or in the shop. The shop was separated into two with a big staircase in the middle. One side sold clothes and the other sold goods from food to nails anything a man or animal needed. Pontsiân shop was famous for selling everything that you possibly needed from a small pin to bikes. We sold clothes for every occasion, from children s clothes to ones suitable for a wedding or a funeral. The shop would be open until eight or nine o clock. Farmers would come down after supper with a basketful of eggs and then return with a basketful of household goods. Usually, if there was a man in the family, there would be an ounce of tobacco, hidden in the basket somewhere. The basketful of eggs was enough to pay for the goods, as eggs were around a halfpenny each. Christmas time was a very busy one. Halfpenny cards were displayed, with one penny cards in a box next to the counter. There were also tuppenny cards, but these were kept under the counter as not everyone could afford this price for a card! At this time we used to get the following into the shop for Christmas luxuries (in those days) such as Jaffa oranges, red apples and grapes which came in bunches in a small barrel. There would also be nuts, with the monkey nuts and Brazil nuts coming in big sacks. Children would receive nuts and fruit and then a rag doll or a small wooden toy in their stocking from Santa. It was also a busy time in the Post Office as farmers wanted to post geese to their relatives and friends in the cities. Some farmers came in with unpacked geese, as they wanted my mum to pack it for them! In those days most people had a goose for Christmas dinner. People didn t think of having a turkey at this time because it was only the rich who could afford them. During the holidays the village children used to wait outside in the village square for the mail to arrive, hoping that there would be a present or card for them from relatives that lived far away. There were three postmen who went out every day, including on Christmas Day. On this day, if they were lucky, the Posties would have lunch with a kind farmer. The Christmas service was held in the Church on Christmas morning, while a concert was held in the Old Chapel at Llwynrhydowen in the evening. People came from far away, mostly on their bikes, from every part of the country to the concert. It is a pity that the concert is no longer held, due to the impact of television and that communities aren t as close as they used to be. In looking back on life as it was then it is important we remember that although it was a hard time, it was also a happy time! Magw Evans 7

As part of those celebrations we went for a trip to Pentre Bach to see Sali Mali and other characters. All the children enjoyed meeting all the characters and enjoyed the stories they had to tell on the day. April was a busy month as the children celebrated Easter. They took part in various activities based on the themes of Easter and Spring. Rosemary Jones F I R E!!! As teenager of 15 I once forgot about a chip pan cooking on our stove. It caught fire. I didn t know how to deal with the situation correctly, so I picked up the blazing pan, carried it over to the sink and turned on the water tap. Flames shot up from the pan like an exploding volcano. I then picked up the burning pan and carried it to the back door where I threw it outside. How I didn t set myself ablaze is a minor miracle. And I d left a trail of smoke damage that cost a small fortune to put right. Everything I did was wrong. We ve had some house fires in our area recently. While there was significant smoke and water damage, thankfully there were no injuries. These events have highlighted just how important it is that we know how to deal with domestic fires more intelligently than I did when I was 15. What basic precautions should we have in place to protect ourselves and what actions should we take in the event of a fire in our home? This is a particularly important issue given where we live. As a rural community covering quite a wide area, it 14

takes a minimum amount of time for the Fire Brigade to reach us. It s during the first few minutes once a fire starts, before it can get a full hold, that there are certain things we can do and more importantly things that we cannot do as householders to deal with the situation. The following is based on instruction given by the Lancashire, Grampian, Tyne & Wear, Humberside and Norfolk Fire Brigades when I ve been on fire fighting courses with them over the past 25 years. On these courses the Brigades spent a lot of time teaching us how to deal with fires at home as well as offshore. Fire Prevention: The most important lesson the Brigades taught us for fire prevention at home is: Don t allow a situation where a fire could happen in the first place. So no leaving items cooking that could catch fire; No open fires that could spark out into the room use a fire guard; No flammable items too close to a source of heat like an open fire, electrical fire, paraffin or gas heater, or radiator that could be ignited by radiant heat; Don t leave any of the above free-standing fires left on, unattended, for any significant length of time; Replace old electrical wiring that could overheat and catch fire; Don t overload electrical sockets that could also overheat and catch fire; Don t use high power rated electrical items on a low power rated socket; Don t be careless with personal sources of fire like cigarettes, matches or candles make sure they re properly extinguished. Detection: Fit smoke and gas detectors in your home and check them regularly. Just one detector is not necessarily enough. Position them where they will pick up the emissions from any fire and where you will hear them. Get professional advice on the number and type of detectors you need and where they should be sited in your home. Fire Fighting Equipment: This is the big Don t from the Brigades - don t try to be a hero. If there is any risk whatsoever to you and yours from a fire, the first and absolute priority is get out of the building. You can replace property or rebuild a house, you can t replace you or your loved ones. Domestic fires basically come in two forms a point fire or an area fire. An area fire is one that has got a hold in a wall, floor or ceiling, sometimes from overheating electrical wiring but often from a point source of ignition that gets a hold over a wider area. By the time a fire has got a hold over an area, you don t know what part of the house will flash up next, or what toxic fumes will be released. It s become too widespread and too dangerous for you to try to put out yourself. You can only do one thing get out, then raise the alarm. This is very important if a fire has got a hold over an area in your house, the toxic fumes it produces will render you unconscious. In that situation, if you stay in the house to phone the Fire Brigade, there is a significant risk you could be overcome by the fire s fumes, placing your life at risk. The safest course of action is to get out of the building first, and then go to a neighbour to raise the alarm. Point source fires are the only one that householders can tackle. Point source fires include chip pans catching fire, sparks from an open fire that set part of your carpet or a piece of furniture alight, free standing items that have caught fire from radiant heat, or appliances overheating and catching fire anything on fire that is free standing or is burning in isolation. To deal with this type of fire, the Brigades taught us that the simplest, most effective piece of fire fighting equipment in the home is the fire blanket. Fires happen because of the Fire Triangle there must be a source of fuel, a source of heat and there must be oxygen. Put those three together, raise the temperature of the fuel source above its flash point, and you have a fire. To put out a fire, all you have to do is 15

take away just one of those three elements. That s why you cannot put out an area fire at home yourself - the only effective way to deal with a large house fire is to remove the heat source by cooling. That s why Fire Brigades use water, to lower the temperature of the burning surfaces below their flash point. A householder will never have enough water to do that. With a point source fire, however, what the householder can do is take away the source of oxygen in order to put out the fire. With no oxygen, the fire suffocates and goes out. The most effective means of doing that is to put a fire blanket over the point source fire. We were taught by the Brigades that if you couldn t tackle a fire at home with a fire blanket, the safest course of action was get out of the building and raise the alarm. Of the various fire extinguishers available for domestic use, the only one that is fool proof is a CO2 extinguisher. Water or foam fire extinguishers can cause problems with certain types of fire, can cause damage to equipment and you aren t necessarily going to have enough of it to put out the fire. Remember, all a water extinguisher does is cool the burning item. When a water extinguisher is empty, if the item on fire has not cooled down below its flash point, it can re-ignite. There can also be combustible gases (often not visible to the naked eye) still around the hot area that can flash into fire, even when there are no flames around they just need enough heat to ignite. A foam extinguisher is designed to both cool the burning item and cut off the oxygen supply by laying a foam blanket over the thing that s on fire. However, unless you know how to use one properly, you wont necessarily get a good layer of foam over the burning item, and so again, there s a significant risk of re-ignition. There are dry powder extinguishers that also act by cutting off the fire s oxygen supply, but they re very messy, producing a choking powdery cloud when used in a confined area. The cold blast from a CO2 extinguisher both cools the item on fire and displaces its oxygen supply, taking out two of the three elements of the Fire Triangle and so puts out the fire. Because it s just gas, any damage to equipment is minimal. But once again, never forget that if the fire has got enough of a hold that a good blast from a CO2 extinguisher cannot put out the fire, then it s got too much of a hold for you to try and tackle and you must get out and raise the alarm. Fire Exits: So, you ve made sure you don t have any unnecessary sources of ignition in your home, you ve taken all the sensible safety precautions you can against any fire sources you do have, you ve installed your fire and gas detectors and you have your fire blanket on hand. Now you also need to make sure you can get out of the house quickly if you do have a fire. For that you need at least two safe exit routes. What applies to public buildings applies equally at home never assume you ll be able to get out of your front door, or even that you ll be able to use the staircase if you re in a multi-floor house if there s a fire. We ve all seen the heart breaking items on the news of families being killed in a house fire by being trapped on the first or second floor of their home, unable to get out of the burning building because they had no secondary fire escape route. Each householder would be best served by getting professional guidance on secondary escape routes and what, if any, appropriate escape devices you might need, given your individual circumstances. Each householder s situation is different and each home needs its own specific fire plan. If you leave things to chance, we ve seen how tragic the results can be. COMMUNITY MARKET CAFÉ Capel Dewi Church Hall Residents of the Capel Dewi area have missed the regular coffee mornings which were once a feature of village life. With the arrival of spring, a new idea emerged, to combine the social idea behind a coffee morning with the opportunity for everyone to sell and buy locally grown produce and locally made craft items. As one local resident has said: I d love to be able to sell my own vegetables, buy cakes I never get time to make and have the opportunity to meet up with people in the village. The Community Market Café will give the people of the area the chance to do just that. So on Saturday 16 th April we tried the idea out, with the Church Hall full of people enjoying hot drinks and each other s company. People brought along their crafts, cakes and produce to buy and sell with other people in the area, with all items at affordable, everyday prices. Along with the tasty cakes, particularly impressive was the work done by the village Arts and Craft Group. The paintings and drawings on show captured a very real sense of their subject, whether local landscapes, still life studies or portraits of people or wildlife they were all were particularly evocative and effective. The morning also featured our very own Capel Dewi Gardener s Question Time with the Two Michaels. They gave us some particularly useful tips on slugs, invasive riverbank plants, rhubarb (you trim the early sprouting tops!) and when to plant out in times of changing climate. 18

GARDENING TIPS WITH THE TWO MICHAELS When is it best to plant out these days? With Spring now starting consistently a good month earlier than in times past, the Michaels were asked about planting times. We can all see how the trees are getting their leaves much earlier, how blossoms are coming out earlier and how a number of perennials are coming up sooner. We were told that given this permanent shift in our seasonal weather, and because plants are definitely starting earlier in the year, we could plant out earlier than we used to, but we had to watch out for those frosts that April and early May still have up their sleeves. It s a case of watch the sky and keep an eye on the weather forecast if we are in for a clear night s sky with the weather coming down from the north, we can still get a sharp night s frost that can damage or even kill off the young plants. In that event, cover your plants for the night with garden fleece, or lay a cover of straw on the ground to protect them. For people growing blossom-based plants that need pollination, there can be an additional problem if the blossom comes out very early there can be a shortage of pollinating insects whose life cycles have not yet adapted to the shift in seasonal weather we are experiencing. If that happens it s a case of keeping an eye out for the wee flying beasties as the blossom comes into full bloom. If there s a striking shortage of the insects, not enough to do the job of pollination, then you ll have to get out the soft bristled paint brush and help the blossoms along that way. Slugs what to do about them Heavy use of slug pellets is not necessarily the best solution you only need a small handful of pellets around your prize plant to adequately protect it. One effective deterrent is to surround the plant you want to protect with an abrasive ground cover like sharp sand or anything the slugs find physically very unpleasant to have to cross. We were also told that beer traps really do work. Mike Carpenter described how he d once seen a slug come into a garden where there was as a beer trap. It clearly sensed the ale was around because it lifted itself right up, waggled its little antennae around and then made a beeline (or should that be a slug line?) straight for the beer. The traps need to be recessed right into the ground in a container too deep for the slugs to get out of, and the beer must be fresh each night it seems our slimy little friends are quite the discerning drinkers. Finally you can put sacrificial plants around the plants you really want to safeguard slugs do have preferences as to what they like to eat. Unfortunately if your prize plant is top of their menu then it s the other protective measures you ll have to use. Himalyan Balsam - an invasive river bank species Over the past few years along the rivers Clettwr and Tiefi we have seen this tall, square stemmed invader with its distinctive dark green leaves and purple flowers take over the riverbanks with a vengence. It s so aggressive as a species it prevents most other plants from being able to share growing space with it. Once established, the monoculture it creates is of little use to our native wildlife it provides top cover from predators, but that s about it. Thankfully the plant pulls up quite easily, so can be readily removed, but it must be disposed of carefully so it doesn t spread any further. If you get an infestation of it, you really should contact the waterways section of the Environment Agency who will advise on how best to tackle and dispose of it. 19

A View From Afar NEW ZEALAND - A GREAT PLACE TO VISIT New Zealand s temperate climate makes it good to visit all year round, but the weather is especially nice in the summer months of December, January and February. There is a lot to see and do there. One of the main attractions is the spectacular scenery which ranges from large flat plains to rolling hills and mountains, often all to be seen in one view. There are many native forests, clean rivers, beautiful coastlines, lakes and fjords. In the North Island there are volcanoes, geysers, boiling mud pools and hot springs. There are hot springs in the South Island as well, some of which you can enjoy a nice relaxing soak in. It is beautiful in the winter too with snow capped mountains, lots of good ski fields, glaciers you can take guided walks on and many crisp sunny frosty days. Most areas in the countryside are sparsely populated, so you feel like you have the place to yourself, as NZ is a similar size to the UK, but only has a population of 4 million people. Some of the many things to do include: Visiting museums and art galleries, animal and wildlife parks, craft centres and Maori Culture experiences. There are walks and hikes catering for all levels of fitness, lasting from minutes, up to a week. There are lots of water activities you can do like rafting, jet boating, kayaking, good surfing beaches, sea or lake boat trips, whale and dolphin watching and swimming with dolphins. For the even more adventurous you can go bungee jumping, sky diving, paragliding and white water rafting. For a rest after all these activities there are many restaurants, cafes, breweries and wineries to visit where you can try some wonderful food and drink, especially some of NZ s international award winning wines. You d need at least 3 to 4 weeks for a visit to do justice to this beautiful country with its unique range of geography, climates and such welcoming hospitable people. If you don t have that amount of time you d need to do your homework well so as to make sure you were able to fit in as many of the things that interest you the most. Felicity Thomas, Nantyremyn

RURAL ENERGY - WIND TURBINES - WHAT DO YOU THINK Living in rural west Wales where we do means that we have to pay more for our energy compared to people living in other parts of the country. Whether it s the rising cost of petrol and diesel for our vehicles, or the rising cost of domestic heating oil, or the cost of stand-alone gas cylinders for heating and cooking, or the cost of our electricity - meeting our energy needs is getting more and more expensive. And yet we live in a region full of natural renewable resources that if harnessed effectively should on the face of it make our energy burden easier to bear. If those resources were harnessed, the question is will they lower the energy costs for those of us living in this area? One of those natural resources is wind. The big issue we are all currently facing are the proposals to site wind farms in our region to make use of that natural resource. Is that what the people of the area really want? And would we get any direct benefit from it? It s up to you to decide what you think about that. At this point let me declare not so much a vested interest, but special knowledge I work in the offshore energy industry and have been part of working groups that have looked at the issues associated with different sources of energy supply and demand. The following is based on the findings of that work. In this country we use a national grid system to supply almost all of our domestic electricity needs. The people running the grid know very accurately throughout each day how much power they will need meet people s demand. Every day they have sources of power generation on hand that they can bring on line and switch into the grid with 100% reliability and at short notice in order to be able to meet that demand for electricity. The problem with electricity generated by wind power is that it can never be 100% relied upon to be there at full capacity at those peak times when it s needed the most. As a source of power to make a contribution to the national grid in general, wind turbines are fine. They top up the power fed into the grid over and above that which comes from other more reliable sources. The reason for having wind turbines as part of our national energy supply mix is that when they re turning and generating power, we can cut back on our use of other power stations, thereby reducing coal, oil and gas usage and lowering our carbon emissions. But when the wind drops or stops altogether and you lose the electricity from the wind farms, if you don t have other sources of power generation you can switch into the grid to make up the shortfall, that s when you have a big problem. If we come to depend on wind turbines to supply a fixed percentage of our national power needs without the backup to fill the gap when the wind drops and the power stops flowing, the inevitable result is that we face power shortages (brownouts) or in the worst cases, full blackouts. The very nature of wind turbines means that they can never be 100% relied on to be generating all the power we need from them, just when we need it, to meet their quota of demand at a particular moment on any given day. From the purely technical point of view 22

of being able to meet our power demands in full, as and when we require, in all circumstances, wind turbines don t do that and they never can. If we choose to rely on them for a fixed percentage of our national power supply with no alternative on hand to switch in when they stop supplying their full quota of power, we face the prospect of blackouts. Given those unavoidable technical facts, why are we being asked to accept wind farms in our area? Again, that s the question each of us must decide for ourselves. THE CASE FOR WIND TURBINES The case put forward by supporters of wind turbines is that they are a non-polluting, low carbon source of energy, fuelled by a safe natural resource that will never run out. During the construction phase, they argue that jobs will be created in the area and that local businesses will be used for transport and so forth, giving a boost to the local economy. When energy generated by wind turbines is actually being put into the national grid we can reduce our reliance on fossil fuel power stations, which reduces our use of increasingly expensive and ever more rare fossil fuels, which in turn reduces our carbon emissions and thereby reduces our contribution to global warming. The opponents case against siting wind turbines at Llanllwni Mountain is: RHESYMAU DROS WRTHWYNEBU TYRBINAU GWYNT MYNYDD LLANLLWNI GWELEDOL : Gweladwy o bob rhan o r pentref Gweladwy o Lanwenog, Brynteg, Llandysul, Llanfihangel-ar-Arth, Synod Inn, Preseli, Y Mynydd Du Newid y gorwel (GDC8) Colli harddwch naturiol TIRLUN : Newid dirfawr UDP EN16 Diogelu Tirlun arbennig Colli r grug a r mawn Colli rhosdir agored Colli r cyfle i ddarlunio r tirlun agored TWRISTIAETH : Colled i r economi leol DIOGELWCH : Perygl cerdded dan y tyrbinau Tynnu sylw gyrrwyr Troi Heol y Mynydd yn drac rasio Codi braw ar geffylau ADAR A MAMALIAID : Difetha r Barcud Coch a r Cornicyll Colli cynefin yr ehedydd Colli cynefin y mochyn daear a r dwrgi Ystlumod Ysgyfarnogod a ffwlbartaid Nadredd Pilipala a gwyfynod SŴN : Ymyrraeth Colli cwsg Taflu cysgodion rhwng 6am ac 8pm bob dydd DIWYDIANNOL : Troi r mynydd yn safle diwydiannol Codi adeilau diwydiannol Cysylltu â r Grid Cenedlaethol 23

Over and above the energy supply and environmental arguments, however, there is something that lays at the heart of not only this question, but also at the heart of many other issues that affect our lives as residents of this area the simple fact that not 24

that many people live in our part of Wales. It is this fact more than anything else that affects how the decisions are made that have very real consequences for all of us. Low population density is why the RAF use our area for ultra low flying exercises; it s why telecoms companies and broadcasters don t put up phone or t.v. and radio repeater masts nor lay high speed phone and internet cables to our villages; it s why energy companies plan to put up wind farms in our region and why local authorities close our schools and reduce a range of our local services. It s all for the same fundamental reason. We are seen as a low population area. When the planners or flight controllers look at the maps of our area they think that because not that many people will be disturbed by their proposals, it s all right to go ahead with their plans. When County or National policy makers or commercial company managers have decisions to make about the delivery of services, those same maps show that there are not enough people living in our area to justify the cost of providing certain services. Whether or not you accept those considerations as the last word on any of these issues depends on your own point of view. The one thing that is true for all of us living in this area is that, cold economics aside, all these decisions have a direct effect on our lives. We are the ones who have the planes flying low over us, who have our schools closed, who won t be able to receive t.v. or radio from terrestrial broadcasters when the analogue signals are switched off. And we are the ones whose lives will be affected by the wind farms. Will all of this be for better or for worse? Again, that s something you must each decide for yourselves. Will the proposed wind farms benefit us locally, directly, with lower electricity bills? In fairness, we would get the same benefit as everyone else on the national grid if their bills are lowered by the contribution made by the local wind farms, then our bills will be reduced as well. If not, however, then no, in that case, like everyone else, we would get no direct long term economic benefit from the turbines. It s up to each of you reading this to decide what you think about this question. These things affect all of our lives. There may not be that many of us, but our planners and policy makers can only know what effect their proposals will have on us if we tell them. If you want to express your thoughts, whatever they may be, on this project (Planning Number E/23947), you can write to the Head of Planning for Carmarthenshire: Mr E. Bowen, Head of Planning, Carmarthenshire County Council, 40 Spilman Street, Carmarthen, SA31 1LQ. In future issues we shall be looking at micro power generation from domestic windmills, heat exchangers and solar panels. We will also be taking a look at the contribution this area s other great natural, renewable resource our waterways, steams and rivers can make to power generation, seeing if water power can be harnessed to help us with our local energy needs. If you have any stories on how we used to harness water power in this area in times past, or if you would like to comment on the above piece, please send your contribution in to the paper. G.G. 25

THE ADVENT OF SPRING Then broke the Spring. The hedges in a day burgeoned green; The drawing of the trees Incomparably pencilled line by line, Thickened to heaviness... Vita Sackville-West The advent of Spring is often startling in its suddenness. Now Spring is giving way to Summer, an event I always think marked by the late-leafing of the ash tree and the flowering of the hawthorn or may. The Spring Show is merging into the Pageant of Summer. Some Spring flowers are gone; others have been crowded out or overgrown by later growth. But the greater stitchwort still survives, and, along with the pink campion and bluebell, produces the red, white and blue in the hedgerows at this season. Two other white flowers are common and conspicuous at the roadsides: the hedge garlic, the food plant of the larvae of both the orange-tip and green-veined white butterflies, often seen about them, and the cow parsley or Queen Anne s lace, one of a number of similar whiteflowering plants seen at different times of the year. Fields which were earlier carpeted by dandelions, now have their yellow replaced by that of buttercups, often of bulbous buttercups, or, in damper spots by creeping buttercups. Many trees have already flowered and the elms have seeded, but the hawthorn and whitebeam are in flower, and the last of the horse chestnut flowers are still on the trees. The foliage of the trees is at its best about now, presenting an infinite range of green hues to the eye. Soon the greens will become duller and more uniform and the leaves will lose their pristine condition under the attacks of insects and the weather. Butterflies are appearing again. They may have spent the winter as eggs, larvae or pupae, each species adopting one form or another in which to hibernate. The exception is the speckled wood butterfly which may winter as either a pupa or a larva. The hairstreaks, with the exception of the green hairstreak, spend their winters in the egg stage, exposed to the elements on the bare twigs of their food plants, hatching when the first leaves appear. The silver-washed fritillary is somewhat odd as its eggs are not laid on its larval food plant, but in a crevice in the bark of a tree. There it soon hatches, consumes its eggshell, and then remains there without eating until the spring, when it climbs down the tree to find a dog violet on which it will feed and eventually pupate. Ageing Thoughts I wonder if anybody ever thinks of themselves as getting old until they suddenly realise other folk consider them so. Anyway, here s how it happened to me well, not exactly, but near enough. As I passed two chaps along the way I heard one to the other say, Who s that old chap by the path to the wood?, With a nod in the direction to where I stood. I thought, I m not old, he can t mean me. So I turned around expecting to see Who it was he had in mind, But nobody else was stood behind! Geoff Harrison 26
