1 July 2014 Editor: Jan Watson Friendship First Apollo Amigos PREZ SEZ: Summer has arrived in grand style and we can stay cool and enjoy our pool, but the temperature has to be just right for our grandkids to jump in. Kids today are just as wimps as they would rather be indoors playing electronic games. The Sonora rally was held at the Mother Lode Fairgrounds in Sonora due to the California drought and resultant restrictions. On the good side, we had A/C and the clubhouse, being quite large, enabled us to hold all our planned events indoors. Jan & Bruce thought it was great; we had a great rally, they had less work and more free time to relax and do their own thing. Jan will probably elaborate on the rally further in this newsletter. Larry Stoll celebrated his 90th birthday on July 5th. Larry & Carol have been members since the inception of the Amigos Chapter. Both have contributed much to the success of our rallies. Carol, having been our Treasurer for an unknown number of years, she won t tell us, (joking) & Larry organized and hosted may rallies for both Amigos and our chapter s predecessor, Apollo International. Larry is no longer driving their coach but they are with us in spirit! Happy Birthday Larry from all the Amigos. On another note, Jan & I, in recent s have asked for prayers for members going through surgeries and/or other health issues, some more serious than others. Please keep all these members in your thoughts and prayers and continue your prayers for their swift recovery and the Lord s comfort. Both Earlene & Ron McCloskey & Tricia Ball need our prayers. I have just learned of Bobby Donald s un- Bobby Donald: ~ untimely death and ask that you keep his wife, Shirley, in your prayers during this difficult time! Till next time, God Bless! Prez, Paulette Bobby was our Central Area Vice President in 1998 or earlier, when we (Amigos) volunteered at Indio. He held many offices since then in the Western Area, including Western Area President for 4 years. He was the hardest worker you would ever meet and had a wealth of information about FMCA, the Western Area and loved the RV life style. Bobby & his loving wife, Shirley, are Amigos and loved coming to our rallies. Bobby just recently celebrated his 79 birthday.

Tricia Ball is recovering from kind of an intestinal infection that had her hospitalized for about 10 days. She is home now, but still on the mend. Opps, as of today, Tricia is in the hospital again!

Collectively, we can think of a theme and enter 2 choices. Theme judges are our newly elected Prez: Dick Gibbs, VP Lon Cross & By-Ways editor, Sandra King. So get your ideas to Paulette or me and we will submit them by Dec. 15th to be in the running. The winning Chapter will receive $ plus preferred seating at Sat. night entertainment The winning Chapter will be announced on Saturday night entertainment We can win a prize! New Western Area Officers: Congratulations to our newly elected Western Area Officers! Amigos Member, Dick Gibbs is now WEA President, Lon Cross, Sr. VP, Debbie Golk, Secretary, Judy Jackson, Treasurer, Lee Clemons, Northern VP, Bob Golk, Central VP and Roy McDaniels, Southern VP. On another note: The Amigos Board elected Char Gibbs to be our Temporary National Director for voting purposes at the upcoming Redmond Rally. She will be accompanying her husband, Dick, and can act as our Temporary Delegate. Bob Newby, our Alt. ND wasn t planning to as Bobby was. Now Char will be our Rep as she will be there anyway. 3 Apollo Amigos Editor: Jan Watson Page 3 A Note About Officers & 2015 Dues: The current 2 year term for officers will expire on December 31, 2014, which means we need to elect new officers soon! If you are willing to serve please let Paulette or me know so we can start working on this. Cincinnati FMCA would like to have the list of officers by the beginning of November to coordinate their year end paperwork, which means we need to get moving on this issue. We also need to verify our active members and to do that we need to have your dues paid by November 1st, not the middle of March next year. We have always been a little lax on this and we need to get on the ball and be current. So even though you may have recently paid your Amigos dues, we are asking that you start thinking about sending Barb Nelson a check for your 2015 dues. Please make your check payable to Apollo Amigos and mail to Caton Court ~ Riverside, CA Please put 2015 Dues on the memo line. Thanks...let s getter done! Rally Report: Flicker Mother Lode Fairgrounds May 20~27, 2014 When Bruce and I arrived at the Fairgrounds early Tuesday morning the Tinsley s (Russ, Lee & Rusty) were already settled in. Frank & Rory Wenzel followed us in and we were joined by the Hoag s and Boyd s later in the day. Newby s, Hill s & Vincent s joined us on Thursday. The deal with the Fairgrounds came about when Toulumne County was put on 50 % mandatory water reduction, way back in February, due to the drought. Rather than cancel the rally, the Fairgrounds seemed like a good option, particularly because they were available. Renting the Manzanita Building was part of the deal and it was big enough that we could have parked several coaches inside. It also has a full kitchen which was an added feature AND air conditioned. The camping fee was $30.00 per night but it was FULL hook-up and most of us had 50 AMP. So Tuesday after movies & Happy Hour we enjoyed dinner in air conditioned comfort and the Watson s fixed hamburgers, baked beans and Cole Slaw. Roger Boyd took the honors of cooking the hamburgers on the way too hot grill that I turned on, but saved the day and they were great! Thanks Roger. On Wednesday we had coffee and breakfast bar in the Manzanita Room and the day was on your own. I (Jan) was gone most of the day as I had a business commitment to attend. The Tinsley s & Boyd s took a trip to Mariposa with Frank Wenzel to visit Frank s newly acquired family ranch. It was a long day, as Hwy 49 to Mariposa is an up & down and a VERY windy road. Then Lee was gracious enough to fix everyone dinner with the help of Paulette so no one had to venture out! Thanks, ladies!

4 Thursday was a beautiful day with cool mornings and warming up in the afternoon. We enjoyed a hot breakfast of biscuits & gravy that the Tinsley s fixed and it wasn t complete without Paulette s scrambled eggs, so Paul fixed her scrambled eggs! It was nice to just sit around and enjoy visiting. Hill s, Newby s and Vincent s joined us that day and after movies and Attitude Adjustment Paulette and Roger were in charge of dinner. They fixed delicious Baby Back Ribs, with baked potatoes and the whole shebang! It was wonderful. We spent the evening visiting in our air conditioned dinning room and all retired early. Friday s main event was a trip to Marion & Joan Van Veldhuizen s home to view Marion s restored music machines. He has hundreds of music machines that he has restored and they all work. His craftsmanship is unbeatable. I hope to be able in include some of the picture. Several of the machines took up an entire wall. He also has 1 of 3 Stevens Duryea cars; a 1902 and a 1910 Maxwell that the guys were all drooling over. It was a delightful day and thanks to Shel & Tricia Ball for turning us to this one of a kind collection. We returned in time for movies and Happy Hour and the Watson s fixed dinner that night. Saturday was a hot breakfast proceeded by Mimosa s and/or champagne. We were going to start games that day, but somehow it just didn t happen after our leisurely breakfast. We headed up to Columbia to the Fallon House (yep...the ice cram parlor) to attend the performance of A Second Helping; The Church Basement Ladies Sequel. It was hilarious and very well done and it was a delightful afternoon. We returned to the Fairground in time for Happy Hour to find Chef Dave preparing dinner for us.. We enjoyed his Mixed Grill which included pork loin, salmon and chicken, grilled asparagus, fresh salad and blueberry cobble for desert. Oh my, it was scrumptious! He left enough for lunch on Sunday. Members, Ralph & Susie Hiemstra joined us as well as our guests, Doug and Denise Peters. Sunday afternoon we finally got around to playing some of our usual games. It had warmed up considerably, so it was really nice to have this huge building WITH air conditioning to play Goofy Golf & Bean Bag all afternoon. Boyd s were on tap for dinner and we enjoyed Paulette s spaghetti and meatballs with all the fixings. Monday sure came around quickly and we were enjoying our Memorial Day Breakfast as Paulette and Jan were in the kitchen cooking. Everyone left with full tummies. In the afternoon we finished up the games and we had some pretty exciting play-offs in both Bean Bag and Goofy Golf. This year we played the games as individuals instead of teams as there so few of us. It was still really fun to see who would come out on top. As it turned out Bob Newby was Goofy Golf Champ, and Roger Boyd came out on top for the Bean Bag Champ. We didn t have time for Bean Bag Baseball. The Hill s did their usual fantastic job of grilling tri tip, their wonderful garlic bread, beans and desert for our Memorial Day Dinner! The week went by real fast as always, and the only 2 negatives were a couple of trips to Sonora Regional Medical Center. Friday night Jim Hoag got to feeling kind of funky, so at 11:30, Jim, Mabel and I headed off to SRMC and at 3:30 AM the ER folks decided they wanted to keep Jim overnight to do a couple of tests in the morning. He had complained of dizziness, nausea, and chest pain. Good idea to check it out. He was released on Saturday JUST in time to make it to the theater! (Turned out to probably be an inner ear problem) Sam Hill made a trip to Urgent Care for a bite on his leg that wasn t responding to treatment. He also wound up in ER for several hours for some high powered injected antibiotics. Bruce and I want to thank our attendees and everyone for helping. It was easy on Bruce as the power was provided and he didn t have to deal with trash everyday. I enjoyed actually sitting down and playing games a couple of afternoons! Thanks to all!
