Introduction For 45 years, Innovations Dance Center has provided students with an exciting performance experience through its June recital. The recital is a rite of passage for thousands of youngsters, a chance to shine in front of family and friends that they anticipate with nervous excitement. The recital offers our students a professionally directed performance that allows them to present to their families and friends the results of a year s hard work, dedication, and progress. A big part of dance training is learning through performance. Although performance opportunities can help prepare some students for a possible career in dance, they also contribute to children s success in non-dance activities. The performing experience helps build self-esteem and self-confidence and can result in better in-school presentations, improved social skills, and strong interview skills for future college or job opportunities. The rehearsal process is a tremendous learning experience as well. It helps the children develop retention skills, and by working with their classmates on a group performance, they learn the positive aspects of working as a team to create the best end result. Dedication to recital commitments is the responsibility of both students and their parents. We ve created this handbook in an effort to clarify what we expect from you in terms of commitments and responsibility to the annual recital, the studio, and other students and parents. Feel free to questions to the office at innovationsdancecenter@hotmail.com. Web Site: InnovationsDanceCenterYork.com We are constantly updating our web site. News, important parent and student information, contact information, and more are available online 24 hours a day. Facebook Page: facebook.com/innovationsdancecenter Like the Innovations Dance Center page on Facebook to receive daily updates on studio events. Please invite your family and friends to like the studio. Updates As the season progresses, additional recital information and updates will be posted on the Innovations Dance Center website, and on the studio bulletin board. Make it your responsibility to be informed of this important information. Our goal is to make the recital an organized, exciting experience for everyone involved. It s a team effort: students, their parents, and the teachers are key players in the show s success. Home Study To ensure that the students feel confident about their performance, we ask parents and guardians to encourage them to rehearse their recital choreography on a regular basis. If you would like a copy of your child s music, we will make a CD for a fee of $2. Just fill out a CD order form and submit to the office with your payment; we ll make the CDs as soon as possible. Often, it will help for parents to videotape choreography to assist the students when practicing at home. If you are interested in videotaping the choreography, please arrange a time with your child s teacher. 2 Important Dates By allowing your child to participate in the Innovations Dance Center recital, you commit yourself and/or your child to the following dates and events. 4 Costumes We spend many hours determining the correct costumes for each class. They are always age appropriate and of the highest quality possible. Every student will be required to purchase one costume (per class) for our June recital. We will measure the students for their costumes during the month of November. Costumes include all accessories, but do not include tights or shoes. NOTE: No jewelry (including any facial piercings or ear gauges), underwear, or nail polish (on fingers or toes!) is to be worn with costumes. All tattoos must be covered either by the costume, flesh colored makeup, or a flesh colored bandage that is inconspicuous from the audience. This includes during dress rehearsals and performances, and when class photos are taken. Exception: Dancers may wear one pair of rhinestone stud earrings, which must be approved by their teachers prior to Picture Day. Fees and Payment In an effort to ensure that costumes are delivered in time for studio photographs and an organized distribution to our students, costume orders are placed during the December holiday break. Costume manufacturers do not accept cancellations or offer refunds; therefore the studio does not refund costume payments. Costume payments are due no later than the first class of November, but may be paid any time prior to that date. No costume will be ordered without payment in full Costume Prices Child Extra Small, Child Small, Child Medium: $60.00 Child Large, Child Extra Large: $65.00 Adult Small, Adult Medium: $80.00 Adult Large, Adult Extra Large: $85.00 Any special orders, including extra-large sizes, may require an additional charge (determined by the costume company). Additional charges are the sole responsibility of the parent or guardian. Accessories, such as headpieces or gloves, are included in the cost of the costume. Tights and shoes are not included. Costumes will not be ordered until they are paid for in full. Parents or guardians accept full responsibility for all expenses, including surcharges and postage for 4 costumes that are ordered late. Innovations Dance Center is not responsible if costumes are not received in time for the recital due to late payments. Costume payments are the sole responsibility of the parent or guardian. No refunds will be made if a parent or guardian withdraws a child from the studio after costumes have been ordered and prior to the recital. Purchased costumes may be picked up at the studio during the costume distribution period and up to 15 days after the performance. Costumes not picked up after 15 days will become property of Innovations Dance Center. Sizing Costume measuring begins during the month of November, during scheduled class times. All children will be measured in order to determine their proper costume size(s). Alterations Alterations are sometimes needed after the costumes have been distributed and are the sole responsibility of the student s parent or guardian. Your child s teacher will be able to explain any alterations needed. Distribution Costumes will be distributed during the Mandatory Parent Meetings in May. To receive your child s costumes, all outstanding balances for the season (including tuition) must be paid in full. Costume Care We recommend that you label all costumes, shoes, accessories, and tights with your child s name. Place the costumes in a garment bag with your child s name on the outside. Pack accessories in a clear plastic bag (labeled with your child s name). Hats should be stored in a hatbox or similar container to prevent damage. Please do not wash costumes in your washing machine or iron any costumes. If costumes are severely wrinkled, it is possible that they can be steamed--always consult with your child s teacher before steaming any costume. Remove any tags that could hang out of the costume or show through the costume fabric. The first 5 parents to bring this page to the office during recital ticket sales (April 29-June 3) will receive one complimentary ticket to the show of their choice. We appreciate you taking the time to read this important information. If costume straps do not have snaps or are not attached, please 5
Costumes (continued) sew them prior to picture day. Never cross the straps unless specified by the teacher. Many costumes come with headpieces or hats. We will determine how the headpieces will be worn and let you know this information during the May parent meetings. NOTE: To ensure that there are no costume problems, students should not wear their costumes, accessories, or tights prior to picture day, dress rehearsal, or recital. Costumes with Fringe You will notice a string at the bottom of most fringe skirts or trim, which is to keep the fringe from getting tangled before photos or performance. Please do not pull the string until picture day. After that date, please place fringe skirts on a hanger to keep them from getting tangled. Tutu Maintenance Grasp the waist and give it a gentle shake, then use your fingers to comb out any pieces of tulle that are wrinkled. To store a tutu, put it on a hanger upside down. To help remove persistent wrinkles, hang the tutu in the bathroom during a shower or use a handheld steamer. Costume Racks A wheeled clothing rack is a smart investment if your child has several costumes. It keeps the costumes organized, prevents wrinkles, and provides some privacy during costume changes. Hang costumes on the rack in the order they will be needed during the show. Quick Costume Changes During the recital, some students may have quick costume changes. A special team of moms will assist these students, whose costumes and accessories will be placed in the backstage area. It is very important for these students to label all belongings, and be very organized with all items. Tights, Shoes, Hair, and Makeup Tights and Shoes To ensure that there are no discrepancies in color and style, students are required to have the same tights and shoes as their classmates. The list of required tights and shoes will be distributed as soon as it is available, and tights can be ordered through the studio beginning in February. Be sure to purchase the correct style. Please purchase new tights for the recital, and do not wear or wash them before the dress rehearsal or performance. (Note: Having a second pair of tights on hand offers students and parents a great sense of security.) Be sure that all shoes are cleaned prior to the recital. If you purchase dance shoes just before the recital, please break them in (indoors) so that they are pliable and comfortable for the recital. NOTE FOR BALLET SHOES: The drawstring in ballet shoes is meant to be completely tucked into the shoe, and not tied in a bow on the outside of the shoe. Please pull the drawstring to adjust the fit (not too tight!), tie it in a double knot, and tuck the entire drawstring into the shoe. This will save our teachers a lot of time fixing shoes at picture day, dress rehearsal, and recital. Hair and Makeup All female students are required to wear makeup for the recital: Red lipstick, pink blush, brown eye shadow, and mascara. Older dancers should add black eyeliner and false eyelashes. They should be applied by the dancers or their parents prior to dress rehearsal and recital. For the boys, a little blush works well. Uniform hairstyles are required for each class. All students must wear their hair pulled away from their face (each class will be notified which hairstyle to use for that particular class). Ballet students with short hair will need to purchase a hairpiece in order to create a bun. Hair must be a naturally occurring color; dancers may dye and/or highlight their hair, but bright colors that may be distracting to the uniformity of the class and clash with the costumes will not be permitted for picture day, dress rehearsal, or recital performances. 6 7
Be Prepared Planning The recital isn t a one-day activity. Gather all costumes, accessories, shoes, and makeup several days in advance so you ll know if something is missing or isn t right. Make a checklist of your child s routines, listing the costume, tights, shoes, and any accessories, and refer to it to make sure you have all your supplies. During the Mandatory Parent Meetings in May, we will go over all of these details with you. Use the pages at the back of this book to keep track of this information. Bring at least one extra pair of tights of each color. Also bring extra hair gel, hairnets, hairbands, bobby pins, and hairspray. No food or drink allowed near the costumes! Please do not send your child to picture day at the studio, dress rehearsal, or recital with snacks or beverages--even water! There is no food or drink permitted inside Northeastern High School, and our events are short enough that if they eat before and after, they will be OK. 8 Recital Tips Always have a second pair of tights available. Carry hats in a hatbox or container to prevent them from damage. Hang costumes in a garment bag before each performance. Place your name in all costumes and shoes. Baby wipes/shout wipes (to fix makeup mistakes or wash hands) Safety pins, needle, and thread (for emergency costume repairs) Some other items to bring: Clear nail polish (to repair minor holes or runs in tights when there isn t time to change them) Your pain reliever of choice Band-Aids (the invisible kind) Recital Photography and Videos Recital Photography Class photos will be taken on Sunday, May 21, from 2-10 p.m. at the studio. Dates and times are subject to change. Please confirm your child s time on the updated schedule to be distributed in May. All students are required to be present for their class photo. If you have a scheduling conflict that prevents you from attending Picture Day, you must let your dancer s teacher know during the parent meeting in May. After the group photo shoot, students may choose to have solo portraits made in any or all of their costumes. There is no obligation to purchase photos; pricing for photos will be given out at the Mandatory Parent Meeting in May. Please arrive 15 minutes ahead of your child s scheduled time, as we often are running ahead of schedule. Remember: no food or drink is permitted at the studio during picture day. Hair and Makeup Hair and makeup for picture day can be styled as the dancer and parents see fit, but must be a naturally occurring color. Be sure to have hair and makeup done prior to coming to the studio so that you are ready to look your best as soon as you arrive. For ballet group photos, dancers will be asked to have a hair tie handy and pull hair back away from the face to create a more uniform look. REMEMBER: No nail polish is permitted on fingers or toes during picture day. Even expensive gel manicures will be removed prior to each picture. French manicures and nude colored polish are the only acceptable alternatives. Recital DVD Purchase Innovations Dance Center works with Mack Video Productions to produce a professional DVD of the entire recital, including finale and award presentations. The DVD is available for purchase at $37, and must be preordered. We will provide a DVD order form during Parent Observation Week in March so that you can reserve your copy. The deadline to order DVDs is Saturday, June 17. Forms must be mailed or dropped off at the Innovations Dance Center office. DVDs will be available for pickup during Fall Class Registration. A second order will be placed later (deadline to be determined), and any orders placed at that time will be charged $40 per DVD. Any DVD ordered during this late time period will not be available for pickup until the start of Fall Classes. 9
Dress Rehearsal Participation in the dress rehearsal is mandatory. All students must participate in the dress rehearsal in order to perform in the recital. There are no exceptions to this policy, including high school graduations and other school-related events. The dress rehearsal allows the students to become familiar with the auditorium surroundings and feel comfortable with their performance, costume(s), and being onstage. Lighting, music cues, props, and all other logistics for an organized and professional performance are rehearsed so that the students make the best impression possible. Why a Dress Rehearsal? Often parents question the importance of the dress rehearsal for their child. In fact, the key to a successful performance for your child is the dress rehearsal. Here s why: The stage is much larger than the classroom and is often intimidating to the children. The stage lights can be frightening and disorienting to young children. Modifications to the choreography can be made at dress rehearsal. A student who misses the rehearsal will not have the chance to practice any of the changes onstage. Students often rely on the classroom mirrors to help them with spacing and formations. Having the chance to dance without the security of the mirror before the performance is very important for their confidence. Students have the chance to practice their stage entrances and exits and get used to being in such a large space. Confidence is critical to a successful performance. The dress rehearsal offers your child the chance to feel ready for the show. The dress rehearsal is the only opportunity for parents to videotape or take photos of the show. And there s another big reason why the dress rehearsal is important. One of the main objectives of our curriculum is to teach the spirit of teamwork and commitment to classmates. When children miss the rehearsal, the result can be confusion for the remaining students (an absence affects spacing and timing). We run an organized and timely dress rehearsal; your help with the process will guarantee a professional production. Please arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled rehearsal time. Students may arrive in their first performance costume or may change in the locker room. 10 Student Drop Off and Pick Up Parents or guardians should bring the students to their assigned row in the auditorium, where they will be able to watch the dress rehearsal until it is their turn to be on stage. Parents or guardians must remain in the auditorium until their children have been dismissed. Students will be dismissed from rehearsal once they have completed all of their routines. When a class has completed its performance, a studio employee will bring the group to the auditorium to be picked up. Students are welcome to watch the dress rehearsal in its entirety from the auditorium. This is their only chance to see the entire show, as students are not permitted in the auditorium during the recital. Dress Rehearsal Guests We hold a closed dress rehearsal. Only one parent or guardian may accompany each student to the dress rehearsal. Please, no siblings who do not dance! REMINDER There is no food, drink, or chewing gum permitted inside Northeastern High School. There is also no smoking on the premises, including the parking lot. NEW REHEARSAL AND RECITAL LOCATION FOR 2017! Please note that we have changed our venue this year. The location of Dress Rehearsal and Recital is: Northeastern High School 300 High Street Manchester, PA
Recital Student Drop Off and Pick Up Parents or guardians should bring the students to their assigned dressing rooms, where they will be checked in and placed under the supervision of the class mom(s). Parents are not allowed in the dressing rooms after the children have been checked in for the recital, except during Intermission. Students will remain backstage for the entire performance, and no performing students will be allowed in the audience at any time. After the finale, students will be dismissed by class from the stage only to parents that have been issued a wristband. Wristbands will be issued prior to recital day. At no time will the children be left unattended or permitted to walk the school halls. You must come to the auditorium after the show to pick up your child. If your child is performing during the first portion of the show, you will want to prepare your child prior to the start of recital. This would include costume, shoes, tights, hair, and makeup. If your child is performing later, you may want to wait until Intermission to prepare your child. NOTE: Please do not attempt to pick up your child during the performance. All students will be under the supervision of responsible adults and will be safe for the length of the performance. If you need to make special arrangements to leave early with your child, you must notify the owners ahead of time and have your request approved. Your child s name will be listed with our room attendant for that show, and you will be required to show identification to pick up your child. Dressing Room Etiquette Students must respect other students space and property in the dressing rooms. The students will spend more time in the dressing rooms than onstage, so please do your best to keep them organized and clean. Again, no food or drink is allowed in the dressing rooms. Students are welcome to bring something to do while they wait. Please do not send crayons, markers, pens, or anything else that could mark or stain the costumes. THIS INCLUDES Crayola Color Wonder products; we have found out the hard way that these will stain costume fabrics. Please refrain from sending valuable items, as we will not be responsible for any loss. This includes cell phones, ipods, tablets, hair straighteners, etc. 12 Audience Etiquette Enthusiastic applause is encouraged; however, it is never appropriate to scream out a child s name or yell in any way. Children should not bring handheld electronic games or other devices with sounds and/or lights that could be a distraction for other audience members. Parents and teens should not use their cell phones during the performance. The light from these devices is very distracting to other audience members. Because we present a professional performance, we ask that everyone remain seated during the entire performance. If you do leave the auditorium during the show, you will be allowed back into the auditorium only between dances. This rule is strictly enforced. Children must remain seated for the entire performance. Allowing children to run around or otherwise disrupt the performance is not fair to other audience members. The use of video or photography (with or without flash) is strictly prohibited during the recital. It is important that you pass this policy on to your recital guests. Finale All students are required to participate in the finale, when all students get one more chance to come up on stage and take a bow. All students will remain in their last performance costume for the finale. REMINDER There is no food, drink, or chewing gum permitted inside Northeastern High School. There is also no smoking on the premises, including the parking lot. Recital Tickets Tickets for the annual recital will go on sale at Innovations Dance Center on Saturday, April 29 from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Tickets are $18 each for general admission and the performance is reserved seating. After April 29, tickets will be available for purchase at Innovations Dance Center during regular business hours, and at Northeastern High School during Dress Rehearsal and before both shows. No one is admitted to the recital without a ticket. 13
Recital Policies Video and Photography Parents or guardians may videotape or photograph their children at the dress rehearsal. No electrical outlets will be available, so be sure your batteries are fully charged. Please note: No video or photography will be allowed at the recital. Auditorium Rules No eating, drinking, or smoking is allowed in the auditorium or dressing rooms. When the dancers are not onstage they must remain in the auditorium with their class (rehearsal) or in the dressing rooms with their class moms (recital). Backstage Family members and friends are not permitted backstage or in the dressing rooms during rehearsals or the recital. During intermission, children are not permitted to leave the dressing rooms, but visitors will be permitted. Props All props are the property of Innovations Dance Center and are to be returned to the backstage area after the performance. Props include such items as canes, parasols, beach balls, etc. Awards and Recognition We recognize students on stage who have dedicated their time to dance for 10 years or more. Graduating seniors will be recognized as well. A list of award recipients and graduates will be posted on the studio s website by April 3. Please check the list to be sure that names are spelled correctly and that we have not left anyone off the list. Presentations will occur during both shows, directly before Intermission. 14 Volunteer Information Recital Volunteers Anyone interested in volunteering to help backstage should fill out the Volunteer Information Form at the back of this handbook and return it to the office as soon as possible (no later than May 6, 2017). All volunteers must abide by the policies set forth by Innovations Dance Center. The recital weekend is a hectic experience, and all volunteers must work in a cooperative manner at all times. Our backstage coordinators work very hard to put an efficient system in place, and we ask that all volunteers rely on their experience and follow their instructions. All volunteers will receive an identification badge when they arrive at recital, which must be worn at all times. Please do not bring guests, including children, with you while you are volunteering. Class Moms Class moms are needed for each class to supervise the dancers and keep them safe and accounted for. Volunteer class moms will be able to watch their children perform from the audience. We try to split the show up into several sections so that each class mom is only backstage volunteering for about 10 numbers; that way everyone can enjoy more of the show from the audience. Guidelines for Class Moms: Monitor the activities of the children. This includes making sure there is no food, drink, markers, or activities in which the children may be hurt. Children are permitted (and encouraged) to do warmup exercises prior to performing. Unfortunately, this overseeing also means bathroom trips. There will be Innovations Dance Company moms circulating through the rooms if you need assistance. If your shift coincides with the Finale, you will be able to go to the auditorium to watch the Finale. If anyone approaches you about removing a child from the room, please refer them to the Backstage Volunteer Coordinator. During intermission, children are not permitted to leave the dressing rooms, but visitors will be permitted. 15
There will be several Company Moms in the dressing rooms who will have access to first aid supplies, needle, thread, etc. If you have behavioral problems or children going into meltdown mode, let the company mom in your area know. We will then try to locate the appropriate parent. Recital Program Advertising Each year, Innovations Dance Center publishes an annual program for the recital. Well-wisher and commercial ads are available for purchase. All students have the opportunity to purchase and sell ads, but participation is not required.
