MIDDLE SCHOOL FOOTBALL Participant Information Packet If anyone competes as an athlete, he does not receive the victor s crown unless he competes according to the rules. 2 Timothy 2:5 THE KING S ACADEMY KNIGHTS The King s Academy Knights (TKA) athletic program is a not-for-profit organization established in 2005 for the benefit of TKA students who are interested in participating in competitive sports programs. We offer a wide range of sports programs for student athletes including cheerleading, cross country, baseball, basketball, football, golf, soccer, softball, swim, tennis, and volleyball. Our team name/mascot is the Knights, and our colors are navy, maroon and silver. For more information regarding sports programs, please visit We strive to provide consistent and biblical reinforcement through athletic competition. Parents work with us to help their child build character and a strong work ethic through athletics, and encourage them to accept growing responsibility as they mature. We provide a vital athletic experience that facilitates encouragement, confidence in one's ability and discipline. Parents play a vital role in their student's athletic performance, and in their emotional, social and spiritual development. In cooperation with parents, we seek to help build strong, confident, yet humble servants for Christ. OUR STATEMENT OF FAITH Our Statement of Faith is based on fundamental Christian beliefs that we strongly support as the foundation of our organization. The King s Academy does not promote or endorse any particular denomination. We desire to remain united in the salvation and love of Christ, avoiding any dissension that may be caused by denominational distinctive. We believe the Bible to be the inspired, the only infallible, authoritative, inerrant Word of God. (II Timothy 3:15; II Peter 1:21) We believe there is only one God, eternally existent in three persons Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:1; Matthew 28:19; John 10:30) We believe in the deity of Christ (John 10:33) His virgin birth (Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:23; Luke 1:35) His sinless life (Hebrews 4:15; 7:26) His miracles (John 2:11) His vicarious and atoning death (I Corinthians 15:3; Ephesians 1:7; Hebrews 2:9) His resurrection (John 11:25; I Corinthians 15:4) His ascension to the right hand of the Father (Mark 16:19) His personal return in power and glory (Acts 1:11; Revelation 19:11) We believe that men are justified on the single ground of faith in the shed blood of Christ and that only by God s grace and through faith alone we are saved. (John 3:16-19; 5:24; Romans 3:23; 5:8-9; Ephesians 2:8-10; Titus 3:5). We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost; they that are saved unto the resurrection of life, and they that are lost unto the resurrection of damnation (John 5:28,29) We believe in the spiritual unity of believers in our Lord Jesus Christ. (Romans 8:9; I Corinthians 12:12-13; Galatians 3:26, 28) We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit by whose indwelling the Christian is enabled to live a Godly life. (Romans 8:13-14; I Corinthians 3:16; 6:19-20; Ephesians 4:30; 5:18)

FOOTBALL PROGRAM The TKA Knights football program has worked hard to earn and maintain a reputation of excellence and high character among The King s family and the local community. TKA Knight s football players are Ambassadors for the Knights on and off the field. Therefore, the coaches will have high expectations of each player which includes but is not limited to: attendance, work ethic, a positive and willing attitude, Christ-like behavior, good sportsmanship, respect for their coach and teammates and a passion for the sport football. The King s Academy Knights offers Varsity, Junior Varsity and Middle School football. Spring training, camps and practices, are a part of the high school programs. The season begins in August and runs through November. STAFF Michelle Rutledge serves as the Athletic Director at The King s Academy. She has years of athletic managerial experience and has served at several levels including coach, committee member and board member prior to taking on the director position. The King s Academy Executive Board works closely with the Athletic Director to organize and direct the programs. Each member serves as a liaison for one or more of the athletic programs. The football program Board Liaison is Ben Lee. The King s Academy Executive Board members are actively involved at The King s Academy and their local churches. Each member has demonstrated leadership skills, a servant heart, and interest and experience in various sports. A football committee is made up of participating volunteer parents and will be established after tryouts. These members are nominated and contacted by the Athletic Director to confirm their willingness to serve in this capacity. PROGRAM The King s Academy Knights middle school football program is a member of the Christian Schools Athletic Association (CSAA). The primary goal of the Knight s football program is to teach life lessons and skills that will equip our young men for the world beyond high school athletics. It is our desire to provide the very best opportunity to those who wish to play at the next level. Winning is a desired goal but it is not the most important goal. The most important goal is brining honor and glory to God in how we play. It is possible to win a game, yet lose our ability to shine light in to a dark world. ELIGIBILTY The King s Academy and local Christian home schooling families who are abiding by all Georgia laws governing home schooling programs may participate in the Crown Athletics Middle School Football program. Studen ts who attend local private Christian schools who do not have a football program are also eligible to participate. Participants and parents must acknowledge acceptance of our statement of faith, dress code, and code of conduct by signing the application forms included in this packet. This program is for male students in the 6 th 8 th grades. Boys must not have turned 15 years old by October 25, PARENTS CONCUSSION POLICY The state of Georgia passed the Return to Play Act of 2013 which will go into effect on January 1, The well-being of our student athletes is of paramount concern during any athletic contest. Officials, coaches and administrators are being asked to make every effort to ensure that athletes who exhibit symptoms of concussion are removed from practices and contests. Thus, coaches, players, officials, and administrators must be educated to recognize the signs of concussion in all athletes and remove them from participation until they have been evaluated by a medical professional and cleared to return to play.

INSURANCE All students who have paid their registration fees are covered by a supplemental insurance policy. This policy is designed to assist with any expenses resulting from injuries sustained while participating in a TKA Knights event. All claims should be filed with the student s primary insurance carrier. A portion of the expenses, not covered by the primary policy, will be covered by the supplemental policy provided through The King s Academy Knights. PARENT VOLUNTEERS AND COMMUNICATION will be THE source of communication and it is imperative that you check your regularly and respond in a timely manner. Parent involvement in the football program is a must! Volunteer parent positions are outlined below and online sign-up will be made available to participating families. Each family is REQUIRED to volunteer at EVERY home game. Parents will sign up online for three volunteer positions. There is no guarantee that volunteers will be assigned the positions of choice based on the needs of the team. Once registration is complete the Volunteer Coordinator will produce a schedule and it to all volunteers. Volunteers are required to pay admission upon check in. Volunteers who will be working on the field or in the press box will be given a clearance pass. Only coaches and volunteers with clearance passes will be allowed on the field. A $100 refundable check will be collected from each family on equipment day. Players will not be issued a helmet if they do not have their volunteer check. This volunteer check will be cashed if a volunteer fails to show up to fulfill their volunteer duty. Volunteers who are unable to fulfill their obligation at any game must contact the Volunteer Coordinator within 24 hours and are responsible for finding a replacement. SUPERVISION Parents will be expected to help with supervision at activities as needed. One of the cheerleading coaches and/or a committee member will be present at all practices, games and activities. Parents will need to pick up their cheerleaders promptly following activities. Athletes will be supervised for 15 minutes as they await pickup, after this time the coaches will need to leave. Please notify the coaches in advance if your athlete will be riding home with another family or other arrangements have been made. Remember to keep the coaches' phone numbers handy in case of emergency. TRANSPORTATION Parent volunteers may be utilized to assist with all team transportation. Athletes must have permission from their parents to ride with other teen drivers. Food and transportation costs will be the responsibility of each individual. Athletes are expected to arrive on time to all practices and games for warm-ups and devotions. Disciplinary action will be taken by the coach if an athlete consistently arrives late and violates attendance policies. FANS AND SPECTATORS All fans and spectators must remain on the other side of the track during the games. Volunteers will be issued a Clearance Pass to cross the tracks to enter the sidelines. PLAYING TIME Playing time is not guaranteed during a game. We are a competitive team and playing time and position assignment are determined by our coaching staff. This is typically based on attendance at practice, work ethic, experience at a particular position, and coach discretion in making sure the player can be effective and remain safe at their assigned position. One our coaches wrote a letter addressing this topic and we have included it below for your review. I am writing to share my thoughts related to some recent parental inquiries. I understand and respect the parental questions and concerns related to certain players lack of playing time. However, as a long-term coach and parent of players, my perspective is a bit different. To begin with my top priority as a coach is not winning. It is the

development of these young men personally, spiritually, physically, to their potential and as football players; as well as the development of a team for this season and the future The King s Academy Knights football seasons. As a Coach, I also have criteria for putting a player in practice drills or in games: 1. Can they physically/mentally do the job (position/responsibility)? 2. Can they do this without endangering themselves (w/injury)? 3. *Have they proven themselves in practice attendance, effort, drills, and conditioning? 4. Will their playing time or participation hurt the team by taking up the opportunity for growth, development or experience of a player that is giving more effort, has earned the opportunity, or is proving to have greater potential (for later in the season, or next year)? 5. Important note-some players that don t meet all these criteria are given personal coaching instruction during some of our practices. As coaches, we chose/agreed to help these kids because these players are not yet physically capable of performing the duties of their positions in real game situations. We are trying to get them ready for potential 5 th quarter play, later in the season play or even next year. Parents should also understand it is universally normal for football experiences to repeat in 1-3 year cycles, as players go to another higher level of competition. At every age or level of play, most players practice with little or no game playing time 1-2 years, before participating 1 year consistently (as a starter or team role player); and then after that, some may have the opportunity to start both offense and defense, or excel as a leader and a great player. This is the normal way of things (mainly because of earlier mentioned criteria or developmental purposes). My own children have practiced entire football seasons while only playing a few plays or minutes for the Knights; but as they developed they were able to play more in a 2 nd or 3 rd season. My own son played 4 plays his first year as a 6 th grader (1 offense, and 3 defense plays), and was almost hurt on 2 of those plays. I explained to him what I written here every single week as he asked me why he did not get to play in more games & why I would not put him in the game. It s important to also note 2 other things: 1. We have some 2 nd and 3 rd team players that through the previously mentioned criteria, have earned a position on special teams ahead of better players that start on offense or defense. 2. Offensive substitution is much more limited and difficult, as we must work for proper execution, consistency, game experience and confidence to be prepared for better teams and some difficult games ahead. We rarely have very many returning offensive starters on our middle school team and so offensive play can be limited to those players who are grasping/understanding the offensive plays in practice and need game experience in playing those offensive positions. In conclusion, football is unlike any other sport. It is mentally demanding, physically difficult, & can be very dangerous. These are magnified at the middle school level with the vast differences in height/weight and seasons of puberty in these young men. Because of this, there are some players every year that I personally would rather not put in the game at all until they grow & develop more. In 7 th grade, I was put in 1 play when our middle school team (7-9 th grade) was winning and broke my ankle (6 months in a cast). We desire the best experience for these young players, but we must be very aware of safety concerns and exercise patience with the learning/development of these young athletes. This is especially true when it s their 1 st year playing tackle football and/or they are small or new to the team. Please know that I share these thoughts with sincere appreciation & deep respect for who you are, what you do as parents, and for your son s safety, personal development and football experience. May the Lord help us all as we endeavor to honor HIM and serve these young men. Thanks & Blessings, Coach Chip Buhler

CONFLICT RESOLUTION As Christians, we should seek to resolve conflict in an appropriate and Christ-honoring way, attempting to resolve all concerns or disputes promptly, respectfully and peacefully. Parents should address concerns relating to their athlete or the team directly with the coaches before discussing them with other students and parents. Please do not address these concerns with a coach before or after a practice or game. Parents should contact the coach by phone or to schedule a conference in private away from the athletic events and on a separate day if possible. If a resolution does not occur from a parent and coach conference, a parent or coach is encouraged to address the issue with a committee member or members. Please arrange such meetings with committee members in private AWAY from an athletic event, and on a separate day if possible. If the committee s resolution is not acceptable to the parent or coach, either may appeal to the Board Liaison or bring the matter to the Athletic Director for intervention. ATHLETES BEHAVIOR All athletes and coaches are required to sign a Code of Conduct. All athletes are expected to abide by this Code of Conduct throughout the entire season. Our desire is to honor Christ and each other in our relationships and reflect His character as a representative of The King s Academy. It is our desire to build a quality squad, one that everyone can be proud of, especially the Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, we request that each girl put forth the serious effort required in order to be confidently prepared for the upcoming athletic season. Coaches expect 100% participation and effort from team members. ATTENTION Athletes should be listening when instructions are given and pay close attention to the coaches anytime they are speaking. Coaches expect wholehearted effort during practice. Eating, socializing, sitting down or leaving the practice area without permission is not allowed. If infractions occur, it is up to the coaches discretion regarding what type of disciplinary consequences will follow. Running laps or other types of physical exercise may be used as disciplinary measures. If misbehavior continues, a parent conference may need to be scheduled. GAME TIME No eating is allowed during the game except at half time. Drinks will be provided by the drink coordinator for the week. Absolutely no jewelry should be worn during the game. Please have a designated place to keep your personal belongings. Coaches will not take responsibility for such items. Athletes should not fraternize with cheerleaders for fans during games. They must never openly criticize or degrade opposing team members or other cheerleading squads. Whether winning or losing, athletes are expected to maintain a positive attitude and behave in a Christ-like manner. Opposing teams should always be congratulated at games end. Although we may encounter other athletes, parents and coaches who do not behave in a Christ-like manner, we must determine to keep our standards high and set an example for those around us. Remember, always, that you are representing not only The King s Academy Knights, but also the Lord Jesus Christ. RESPECT Athletes should show respect to adults at all times. A title (Mr., Mrs., Coach, etc.) should be used when addressing an adult. Team members are expected to also treat each other and their appointed Team Captain with respect, kindness, and compassion just as God commands in Matthew 7:12, So in everything do to others what you would have them do to you. DISCIPLINE Discipline is a necessary part of any athletic endeavor. Discipline builds character and creates a unified team. Therefore, we remind our squad members that Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since

you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Jesus Christ you are serving. Colossians 3: Should the Coach need to take disciplinary action for violation of a policy, an attitude or behavior of an athlete contrary to the expectations set forth in the Code of Conduct and Participant Information Packet, the Coach will first speak directly with that athlete to try to resolve the issue using the following guidelines: First warning after speaking with the athlete = sit out a practice Second warning after speaking with athlete and parents = sit out a game Third warning after speaking with athlete and parents = possible dismissal from the team ATTENDANCE AND ABSENCES Punctuality: All athletes are expected to be ON TIME for each practice, game and team activity including fundraising and team building. Attendance is required to ALL practices in order to prepare for the season. All athletes must be on time to depart for games. A meeting time and location will be announced prior to away games, and everyone must be ready to leave when the caravan departs.. WEEKLY EXERCISE AND DEVOTIONS Athletes are expected to be in good physical condition during the athletic season. Therefore, it is important that they maintain a fitness regimen throughout the year. Not only should the outward man be in shape, but the inward man needs exercise also! Practices may include a short devotional and prayer. Athletes may be given the opportunity to lead devotions and prayer. UNIFORM AND DRESS CODE The AD and Coaches reserve the right to define inappropriate attire. Some dress code issues may not be covered under specific guidelines of this packet. Therefore, please be aware that all decisions regarding dress code for TKA Knights events, and what constitutes a violation of it, will ultimately be determined by the coaches and the AD. Parental support in these matters is greatly appreciated. All uniform and equipment items are property of The King s Academy Knights (other than those that are purchased by the athlete to keep). Each student must dress in assigned practice and game apparel when participating in scheduled events. VARSITY LETTERING Any student in grades 9-12, that completes a season as a Varsity participant is eligible to receive ONE varsity letter. If a student is injured during the season and unable to compete, the coaches should determine how the student can best serve the team as a Varsity participant. JV participants who play 50% or more of the varsity season are eligible to receive a varsity letter.
