The insects feed on nectar and pollen from flowers. They taste with their feet that s where their taste receptors are located. A butterfly s two eyes have 6,000 lenses each. Their wings are actually transparent and covered with thousands of tiny scales. Light reflecting off the scales creates the colors and patterns we see. Choose Beets for Brain Power The next time you re at the salad bar, add some beets to the mix. This vibrant reddish-purple root vegetable could benefit your gray matter. Parkinson s Disease Awareness Approximately 7 to 10 million people worldwide have Parkinson s disease, a progressive nervous system disorder that affects movement. During Parkinson s Disease Awareness Month in April, show your support with these ideas: Seasonal symbol. In 1980, a horticulturist with Parkinson s developed a red and white tulip and named it after Dr. James Parkinson, who first recognized the disease. Since then, the tulip has become a symbol of support and research. During the month, use this motif in any way you can make a pin to wear, hang a wreath or banner, or send a bouquet to someone you know with Parkinson s. Creative cause. Several years ago, hundreds of people created panels for the Parkinson s Quilt Project, organized by the Parkinson s Disease Foundation. Sections of it can be rented to display at an event, but you can also gather to make your own community quilt. Meaningful meal. The University of Virginia hosted the first Pancakes for Parkinson s event in The fundraiser has been recreated across the world and is a signature event of Team Fox, part of the Michael J. He ll be forever remembered as the Rifleman, but actor Chuck Connors was a star athlete until he took aim for an acting career. Here s more about the man: He was born Kevin Connors on April 10, 1921, in Brooklyn, N.Y. During World War II, he enlisted in the Army and served as a tank instructor. After the war, Connors played for one season in the NBA with the Boston Celtics. He left the NBA for baseball, playing briefly for the Brooklyn Dodgers and Chicago Cubs. Connors retired from the sport in 1953 and focused on acting. He appeared in more than 45 films, including The Big Country, Old Yeller and Flipper. Connors bestknown role was playing Lucas McCain in The Rifleman, a popular TV Western series, which ran from 1958 to 1963.
