Its botanical name comes from the Latin word salvere, meaning to be saved an appropriate moniker given its extensive healing properties. A natural preservative and antiseptic, sage has been used to treat wounds, bites and ulcers for thousands of years. More recently, the herb s essential oils have been studied in Alzheimer s research, due to evidence they may enhance memory and cognitive function. Autumn Acorn Add some color and whimsy to your Thanksgiving table with these acorn treat holders, cleverly made from plastic eggs leftover from spring decorating. Materials: Plastic egg Hot glue gun and glue Twine Scissors Treats Directions: Hold the egg so the smaller end is pointed down. Run a line of glue around the edge of the top half of the egg, where the egg opens. Quickly apply a length of twine on top of the glue. Without cutting the length of twine, continue gluing and wrapping the twine until you reach the top of the egg. Cut the twine, leaving a 1-inch stem. The egg should now resemble an acorn, with the twine-covered portion as the cap. Make multiple acorns and fill them with treats, such as trail mix, nuts, popcorn and candy. You could also place a slip of paper inside with a name for a place setting. But several other countries around the world partake in similar festivities. Korea. This Asian nation celebrates Chuseok on the 15th day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar, sometime in September or October. Koreans use this time to honor and give thanks to their ancestors. The main dish is songpyeon, half-moon-shaped rice cakes with various fillings. Germany. Areas of Austria and Switzerland join Germany in celebrating Erntedankfest, usually in early October. The centerpiece of the holiday is the Erntekrone, or harvest crown, made of grains, flowers and fruit. Parades, music, dancing and church services round out the festivities. Ghana. The Homowo festival takes place each August in the Accra region of this African country. The joyous occasion commemorates the Ga people s historical victory over famine, when they hooted at hunger (the translation of the word homowo). The traditional meal is kpokpoi, a dish made of unfermented corn powder, and palm nut soup with fish. Canada. The first Canadian Thanksgiving, or l Action de grace in French-speaking regions, was observed in It is celebrated on the second Monday in October and features a meal familiar to Americans: turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and pie. This month marks the anniversary of one of television s most beloved animated duos, Rocky and Bullwinkle. Created by Jay Ward and Alex Anderson, Rocket J. Squirrel and Bullwinkle J. Moose made their debut on Rocky and His Friends, which premiered Nov. 19, Best friends and residents of Frostbite Falls, Minn., the unlikely pair found themselves in the midst of various adventures, armed only with Rocky s flying skills and Bullwinkle s mighty moose muscle. Most of the time, their troubles were caused by Boris and Natasha, spies from the fictional nation of Pottsylvania. Marked by a clever and lovable brand of humor that appealed to both kids and adults, the show was also known for its satires on historical and current events.
