2 2 Shopping Trips September 2016 Shopping trips take place on Wednesday afternoons at 2:30 pm. Sign up in the activity book if you are interested in going to the store. Don t forget to see Cathy at least 24 hours in advance if you would like to go (within a 10-mile radius). Please understand that appointments take priority over shopping trips. 3 3 Honor Your Grandparents Did you know the first Sunday following Labor Day is recognized as National Grandparents Day? A day to honor and celebrate all grandparents, the observance was signed into law by President Jimmy Carter in 1978, and every year since, a proclamation is issued to call on people to observe the day with appropriate activities. The holiday has an official song, Johnny Prill s A Song for Grandma and Grandpa, and even an official flower, the forget-me-not. Other countries, including Australia, France and Poland, celebrate their own Grandparents Day at different times of the year. Remember Grandparents Day with a card or phone call, or better still, a personal visit. Celebrate by looking through photo albums to share memories and recognize old friends and family, or have grandparents demonstrate their talents by cooking a favorite recipe, knitting a scarf or playing an instrument. Mealtime Visitors Guests are always welcome to dine with our residents at American House North. We love to see new, friendly faces in our dining room. Please pay $7 for dinner, $5 for supper and $10 for our buffet meals. Understand your guest must get a meal ticket from the main office and you must be present while your guest is dining with us. Farewell to Summer Observed on the first Monday in September, Labor Day recognizes the achievements of American workers. Many people consider Labor Day the end of the summer season and organize cookouts and other outdoor events. The week of Labor Day also marks the start of the National Football League s regular season. Detroit Connection VS Louisville Sluggers Warriors Saturday, September 1:00 pm at Jimmy John s Field in Utica. American House Senior Living Communities, in partnership with United Shore Professional Baseball League, presents The American House All Star Game in commemoration of 9/11, honoring the unwavering dedication of our American heroes. Featuring the Louisville Sluggers Warriors and Michigan s own softball champs, the Detroit Connection. If you are interested in going please see Cathy or the main office for more info About Louisville Slugger Warriors The Louisville Slugger Warriors are a highly decorated national slow pitch softball tournament team featuring US Military Veterans and Active Duty Personnel who have suffered service-connected physical and invisible wounds. 5 6 Talk About It Your Sports Stories Many people acquired their love of sports in their youth. Use the following questions to reminisce about your early days on the playing field. What sports did you play as a child, either with friends for fun or as part of an official team? Do you remember the name of your team(s)? How about colors, mascots and slogans? Did you have any memorable teammates? What about coaches? Talk about the training or practice involved. Did you or your team ever earn a medal or trophy? Did you play on a sports team as an adult? Share your experiences. Out of all the sports you ve ever played, which is your favorite and why? In general, do you prefer team sports or individual contests? LCR LCR (left, center, right) is a fun dice game where everyone is a winner by just having fun! Check out your calendar for next LCR game or any of our fun games and come join us. Jake is a retired teacher who hosts This Week in History Discussion Group on Tuesday afternoons. Jake makes these discussions very interesting and fun! Please come and check it out on Tuesdays at 3:30 pm in the craft room or stop in The Country Store on Mondays (Jake volunteers) to introduce yourself or just say hi. If there are groups, games, etc... or you would like to volunteer for anything, please see Cathy.

6 7 Spotlight on Alzheimer s Can/Bottle Drive & Bracelet Sale We will be collecting returnable bottles and cans and selling handmade bracelets for the Walk to End Alzheimer s until Sept. 15th. Every little bit helps! Thank you all for your support!!! Out& About Please remember to be on time for departure or pickup for any outings/trips. If departure time is 10:00 that is the time we will be leaving. You want to give yourself time enough to be on the bus by the given times. Also remember, for shopping trips there is a 3 bag rule; this means you are limited to 3 shopping bags per person. Large packages, jugs or bulky items all count as 1 bag. This rule is for everyone s safety & comfort while on the bus. If you sign up for any outings and need assistance getting around, you must have someone go with you to help you (space on the bus permitting). Please see Cathy if you have any questions about any outings/trips. When you sign up for open transportation, this must be done at least 24 hours in advance, and please have the address of where you are going. Interesting Corn Facts By Brian K. Rosso, R.D. Michigan farmers produce 335 million bushels of corn annually. I hope you find the following facts on corn interesting. There are 11,000 corn farmers in Michigan. One ear of corn has 800 kernels. Yellow is not the only color of corn. It can also be green, red, white or purple. Corn is grown on every continent except Antarctica. Another word for corn is maize. Forty percent of the corn produced is used to make ethanol. Corn is actually part of the grass family. Corn is a major food staple for livestock and poultry. Michigan is part of the Corn Belt, an area of the country where corn grows the best. Sweet corn is a great source of fiber, iron, thiamin and vitamin C. Visit an American House today and enjoy some sweet corn, a regular item on our menu. Arts & Crafts Dazzling Fall Decor Add glam to some plain acorns with this beautiful and simple craft. Materials: Acorn caps Clear nail polish Hot glue gun and glue Round marbles, various colors Directions: Paint each acorn cap with clear nail polish to protect it from cracking. Let dry. Carefully line the inside of an acorn cap with hot glue, then place a marble inside. Hold the cap and the marble together for several seconds until the glue dries. Set aside. Repeat with the remaining acorn caps and marbles. When all have dried, arrange them in a bowl or shallow dish. To create extra shimmer and shine, place a batteryoperated pillar candle in the center of the acorns.
