3 3 Wit & Wisdom All the great things are simple, and many can be expressed in a single word: freedom, justice, honor, duty, mercy, hope. Winston Churchill The movie "12 Chairs was a hit during our family movie night. Honor always comes at a price, else it would be worthless. Michelle Griep The Power of Oatmeal By: Brian Rosso, RD This month I am writing about power of oatmeal. I hope you find the information below helpful in your everyday lives. * Oatmeal is low-fat and a low-calorie food * Oatmeal has been shown to lower cholesterol levels. Research is showing that eating oatmeal can remove bad cholesterol (LDL) from your body. * Eating oatmeal can reduce your waistline: One of the great benefits of eating oatmeal is that it is very filling, which helps one eat less by feeling full longer. * Oatmeal and Diabetes: The soluble fiber in oatmeal controls blood sugar levels. * The fiber in oatmeal can lower or maintain a person s blood pressure. *Oatmeal is a great source for these vitamins and minerals: Vitamin A, important for vision; Vitamin B6, for heart disease prevention; iron; and calcium. * Oatmeal is a great source of fiber. There are 2 grams of fiber in a 1-cup serving of oatmeal. Enjoy oatmeal every morning at American House. Solanus Casey Center Residents had a chance to participate in confession and a private mass and enjoyed a delicious lunch. Duty, Honor, Country: Those three hallowed words reverently dictate what you ought to be, what you can be, what you will be. Douglas MacArthur There is no dishonor in losing the race. There is only dishonor in not racing because you are afraid to lose. Garth Stein He who is false to the present duty breaks a thread in the loom, and you will see the effect when the weaving of a lifetime is unraveled. William Ellery Channing

5 6 Talk About It medal. Memorial Day Traditions The last Monday in May is Memorial Day, a time to remember and honor those who have given their lives in service to the country. The federal holiday is associated with many traditions that Americans carry on to pay their respects. How did your family observe Memorial Day when you were growing up? Parades are often held in cities and towns across the country. Did your hometown have a parade? Veterans groups often observe the day by decorating public spaces with flags, wreaths or ribbons. Have you ever been part of a group that performed these tasks? Talk about your participation. If you have family members or friends who lost their lives while serving the nation, share their stories.
