During late summer and early fall, the trees drop the nuts, and squirrels are often seen happily hoarding them. When there s a bumper crop of acorns, it s known as a mast year. Chipmunks, birds, deer and other wildlife that depend on the nutritious nuts can t eat all of them, leaving the excess acorns to grow into new oak trees.

Author Unknown The Tailgating Tradition Each fall, football, food and fun combine for the uniquely American pastime known as tailgating. This popular social ritual has become a much-anticipated feature of the sporting experience. It s estimated that each year about 50 million fans spend up to $12 billion on these parking lot picnics that take place before, during and after a game. There are several theories about the origins of the tradition. Some liken tailgate parties to harvest festivals, where farm families gathered to celebrate and share their bountiful crops, feasting outside before retreating indoors for the winter. Another possibility dates back to the Civil War. In 1861, onlookers reportedly gathered around the battlefield in Manassas, Va., at the First Battle of Bull Run, cheering on soldiers while eating picnic-style meals. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, when people traveled to football and baseball games by train, they brought their own food since stadiums then didn t provide any. As the automobile became common, fans would arrive early to get a parking spot and passed the time enjoying food, drink and camaraderie. Today, tailgating has become part of the pregame festivities for other sports besides football, including baseball and soccer, as well as events like concerts. Intergenerational Activities From Grandparents Day on the Sunday after Labor Day to Intergeneration Month throughout September, this season offers plenty of reminders to take some time to bond with younger people. Whether they re your grandchildren, other relatives, friends, or community members in need of a mentor, here are a few ways you can connect with them: Teach your grandkids your favorite card game or a classic game like mahjong or chess. In return, have them show you a favorite video game or fun mobile app. Volunteering together is a great way to teach younger folks the importance of giving back to the community. Visit an animal shelter or spend time helping out at a food bank. Like the song says, Everything old is new again. Many in today s generation are interested in traditional hobbies like sewing, knitting and gardening. If you possess skills in these areas, offer to teach the basics. Working on projects together gives you a chance to chat about other topics as well as foster the love of learning. Speaking of learning, ask your younger peers for some tips on using a computer, tablet or smartphone. As a result, you can send s, photos and text messages to each other to stay in touch.

Rosso Michigan farmers produce 335 million bushels of corn annually. I hope you find the following facts on corn interesting. There are 11,000 corn farmers in Michigan. One ear of corn has 800 kernels. Yellow is not the only color of corn. It can also be green, red, white or purple Forty percent of the corn produced is used to make ethanol. Corn is a major food staple for livestock and poultry. Michigan is part of the Corn Belt, an area of the country where corn grows the best. Sweet corn is a great source of fiber, iron, thiamin and vitamin C.

5 6 FUN! FUN! FUN! We were very active in July and August! We went to the Grand Rapids Symphony and listened to the music from The Sound of Music. We brought home beautiful flower arrangements from our flower arranging craft. We went to the Coast Guard Festival Senior Day and played Bingo. We had a good time at the McGraft Park concert series and listened to Silverado. During Elvis Week we watched a documentary about Elvis and his experience with gospel music. We had his favorite BBQ Chicken and peanut butter and banana pie for dinner and then later that week we had Elvis here in person! On the 19th we went to Baker College Senior Community Day and a golf outing on the 2. Whew! All that AND we were invited to a wine and cheese tasting event hosted by Comfort Keepers! Elvis was in the house! He sang all of our favorite songs and made the moves that brought us back to the days when the King ruled! Discover the Art of Tangling Join us for a Zentangle Class with one of our residents as our teacher. Treva Golz will show us how to do this fascinating and fun form of art. Meet us on the 1st floor on Monday, September 19th, at 3:00. Zentangle drawing begins with a 3.5-inch square, although you can draw Zentangle-inspired art on any size of paper. Using a pencil, lightly draw a border around the edge of your paper, followed by a string a random line or lines that overlap and create other shapes. These shapes are then used as spaces to draw tangles. Tangling the act of drawing tangles is not the same as doodling, which is often done as your mind wanders. Instead, the Zentangle Method requires the artist to focus on each stroke at a time, not worrying about what the final drawing will look like. Let s learn something new together!
6 7 Comfort Keepers will be hosting a fun Pottery class on Friday, September 2, at 1:00 (1st fl). Cost is $15.00 and includes all supplies. Class is given by local potter Carla Yerkie from Westshore Pottery. Make a Pinch Pot Tea Bowl! Do you have your Guardian Pendant yet? Register with Comfort Keepers - it s free! Call (616) today! Comfort Keepers will also be hosting a Wine and Cheese event here on the 1st floor on Thursday, September 29th, at 3:30. Join us! Did you know that we are now starting a service that brings residents to their doctor appointments? We will be running the American House bus on the 1st and Friday of each month. We will be covering the Tri-cities area (approximately a 10 mile radius). You will need to see Judy in the Life Enrichment office to see if the time slot is available and to see if your appointment is within our area. Exercise! Did you know that we have a group of residents that meet Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for a Sit and Fit Exercise class? They meet in the exercise room on the 1st floor at 10:00. All exercises are done sitting in a chair. Try it, you might like it! Let s Walk! Join Judy in the lobby on the 2nd floor for a walk every Thursday at 10:00. We will walk the bike path (provided the weather is good!) Caregivers Info Meeting Are you caring for someone you love? Lisa Luckey from Community Home Health Care will be here on Monday, September 12th, at 3:00 (1st fl) to give a very informative meeting about tips on caregiving. Arts & Crafts Dazzling Fall Decor Add glam to some plain acorns with this beautiful and simple craft. Materials: Acorn caps Clear nail polish Hot glue gun and glue Round marbles, various colors Directions: Paint each acorn cap with clear nail polish to protect it from cracking. Let dry. Carefully line the inside of an acorn cap with hot glue, then place a marble inside. Hold the cap and the marble together for several seconds until the glue dries. Set aside. Repeat with the remaining acorn caps and marbles. When all have dried, arrange them in a bowl or shallow dish. To create extra shimmer and shine, place a batteryoperated pillar candle in the center of the acorns.
