4 Resident Spotlight You ll often find Mattie in front of the building sitting in the sunshine where her smile is as radiant as the sun. She didn t always live in Muskegon; she started her life in Georgia. Growing up she has wonderful memories of time spent with her Grandmother and Grandad. They always made her feel loved and Grandma made the best crackling bread Mattie had ever tasted. She taught Mattie how to cook good food like chicken livers and gizzards and dressing. When Mattie was 17 she moved to Maywood, Illinois where she started her family. There was Allene, who they called Tiny, who now lives in Indianapolis, Indiana and Vernon, who now lives in Aurora, Illinois. She was married to Robert, a military man. Mattie s world expanded when the couple was sent to Germany where they lived for 18 months. She says it was a really bad winter that year, but she liked Germany, and lived with a very nice lady while her husband was away on duty. When they returned to the states Mattie had two more sons, Danny and John. Un- Mattie fortunately the marriage to Robert didn t last and Mattie found herself as a single mother. This left little time to be with her children, as she juggled working long hours, but she did what she had to do to provide for her children. She especially loved her work at a pancake house. She managed the kitchen and said they had a cook who made the world s best batter. Those were exhausting years, and that might be why today she loves being a homebody and taking a good nap. Good for you Mattie, you deserve it! Later Mattie moved to Muskegon and found herself with an empty nest. Mattie always loved children and this led to her finding her calling as a foster mother. She said she had lots of little girls and loved taking them to church and teaching them to sew. If you know Mattie, it is easy to picture her welcoming children into a sanctuary of safety in her loving arms. Mattie is delightful. When she shoots you that look, peering over the top of her glasses followed by a big smile, it just warms your heart.

5 Department Spotlight Staff Anniversaries Thank you for another year of service, and for all that you do! Jessica L...9/11/2013 Genevieve T...9/17/2014 We are fortunate to have Brittany here at Seminole Shores as one of our cooks. She loves her job and loves cooking for others, a passion passed on to her from her parents. Brittany says her mom loved providing for her family fresh foods from her garden. Brittany says, We loved going into the garden and called it the tomato jungle. The family also loved supplying food from hunting and fishing on their many camping trips. Her father also had his influence on her food passion, as he was the expert in finding cool hole in the wall restaurants on their many road trips. Brittany, unfortunately, lost her mother to cancer 11 years ago. Through this Brittany became especially close to her grandma. I bug her every day, she says, my grandma is my best friend and always has my back. Brittany also has a younger brother, who was her tag along growing up and looked up to her. Brittany definitely was a spirited young person who walked her own path and was very independ- Brittany Alayna G....9/15/2015 Sheronda W...9/29/2015 ent. While still in high school she attended cosmetology school and loved doing hair and make up for all her girlfriends for the dances and for prom. She still does hair on the side for many friends, which she said is her stress relief. After High School Brittany turned her attention to her other love; cooking. She attended Muskegon s Culinary School. She had already helped her mom with her catering business and held a full time job at McDonald s, now she wanted to hone her skills. Today Brittany is a mom to three girls, Estianna 10, Savannah 8, and Sophia 6. She has been with love with Niguel for 12 years, a romance starting back in high school. Life is very busy for her now and she finds time to just relax on the back deck watching the kids play. Someday she ll get back to her love of reading and scrapbooking, but for now this is where her heart is, being with family.

6 This month the National Center for Assisted Living is promoting Assisted Living Week on September 10 through16. The 2017 theme is Family is Forever and recognizes the family within the assisted living facility. It takes a special person to work in this profession and many caregivers and staff give their heart and soul to their residents and form bonds that can never can be broken. On Friday we will end this special week with a fish fry and fried onion rings, with the maintenance team of Dave and James lending a hand. The following Friday will be the employee picnic, a time for our family to get together, talk about the good deeds we see in each other and just have fun. If you are interested in walking in the Muskegon Walk to End Alzheimer s at Heritage Landing on Saturday Sept 23 you can register at act.alz.org/muskegon. There will be a Seminole Shores team that Administrator Notes you can specify to walk with. We invite all families and employees to join us. Let s show our support for a cure! Looking ahead we want you to mark Oct. 27 down on your calendar for our Friday night Trick or Treat and Fall Fun Event. Grandchildren and great grandchildren, employee s children and community children all will be welcome to parade our halls and trick or treat door to door! Pumpkin decorating, door prizes and refreshments will be held in the Life Enrichment Room. Be looking in your for the Seminole Shores Fall Satisfaction Survey on Sept. 25. It will lead you to a link to fill out online or, for those of you that prefer a paper copy; they will be made available through the front office. We will be taking surveys up to Friday, October 13th. We appreciate your feedback and rely on it to help us better serve you. 9/1...Adrianna D. 9/3...Emelda S. 9/9...Valerie L. 9/10...Karen G. 9/18...Richard C. 9/22...Mattie S. 9/25...Tony S. 9/25...
