1 SCHOOL Issue 2 Picker Press North East Intermediate Elementary School NOVEMBER/DECEMBER ISSUE IN THIS ISSUE New Season, New Changes As we move from season to season, we thought it best here at NEIE to change the name of our newsletter! We asked students to come up with a name for the newsletter. We received numerous nominations, but only one was the best fit. Congratulations to Taryn Baker Rm. 508 for her nomination of the Picker Press. Check out her exclusive interview. Oh What s in a Name? Taryn Baker gave us some insight into how she picked this newsletter name. The Fifth grader said I am proud to be a grape picker and show pride for my school. Not only does Taryn show pride in her time at NEIE, she also has a knack for reading and A/R, she especially enjoys the Lemony Snicket s A Series of Unfortunate Events books. In addition to reading, Taryn loves Hockey and can t wait for the season to begin. You can see her sporting her Pittsburgh Penguins gear on most school days. She also enjoys hanging out with friends and playing basketball. The newsletter has been around for a while, so I wanted it to be creative and be enjoyable for those reading the newsletter to see how much we care about our school. Said Taryn. Well said Taryn. 2 2 Fall Fest Arts and Crafts by Tenley Hall Do you want to learn how to make a fun craft for fall? There are five steps. These are the things you will need. 1. glue 2. paper plate 3. cotton balls 4. cloth 5. a cracker 6. string First, get your paper plate and glue your cotton balls on the plate for eyes. Next, glue your cracker for the nose on the plate. Then, cut your cloth in the hat shape. After that, cut your string in the length you want it to be and glue it on the plate for the mouth and hair. Finally, let it dry and you got a happy scarecrow. Now you know how to make a scarecrow. By Haven Dobson For My Minecraft tip, I want to teach you how to make your house shine. First you will need to get your supplies. You will need sea lanterns, and stained glass panes. Then you put the sea lanterns from your floor to your roof. Next, you put the stained glass panes around it and put one in all four corner of your house or room or where ever you want to put it and in the night your house will glow and in the day time it is just good decoration! Ps. it will keep the monsters out of your house or your room!

3 SCHOOL Issue 2 STEM Challenge: Density Tower How have computers changed over the years? With a turkey baster, gently pour liquids into the glass in this order: honey, milk, dish washing liquid, water, and vegetable oil. Once all of the liquids settle, drop different objects into the tower such as a cherry tomato or a ping pong ball. Compare where each item stops, and record your results. Today, computers help us out with everything. Travel, talking, and research are examples of how they help us. But computers have not been as useful as they are now, compared to a few decades ago. Find the Mode of 37, 56, 49, 37 and 18 In 1946 the first fully functional digital computer was complete. It took up 1,800 square feet, that is as big as a small house! The computer weighed almost 50 tons. That is as heavy as 25 cars! In 1973 the first cell phone was made. It was nicknamed the brick and weighed about 2 pounds. You could talk for a ½hour per charge. The brick was sold for $3,995. In 1975 the first personal computers became available to the public. They were bulky, but the computers could sit on your desktop. 4 4 Horses: A History by Hannah Reed Horses appeared over fifty million years before man stepped foot on earth. It all started with Eohippus: the dawn horse, then Mesohipps: Middle horse, next Merychippus: Grass-eater, then Ploihippus: One toed grazer, Finally Equus: Horse of today. There are two ancestors feral and Onagers. Onsager s is my favorite, it s mentioned in various literatures, He scorned the multitude of the city The range of the mountains is his pasture, and he searched after every green thing. There are fighting horses as well. The most famous fighting horses are ala bride and ala junta. They were brave and strong, ala jinta won. Horses are used for many things now such as plowing, riding and for fun. Next time you see a horse think of what it s ancestors have gone through. Read and Relax Bench by Maisy Post Have you seen the new bench in the CORE area of the 4 th grade? Well if you haven t you should! 4 th grade student, Tony Gaston made the bench for Ms. Veshecco, a 4 th grade teacher. Tony shared with us that he was inspired to make the bench so that it could be shared with others. Tony also has other projects he looks forward to building like a foot stool for Mr. Emick. How cool is it that we have students here at NEIE that are full of cool ideas that can come to life, like Tony s Bench! Great Job Tony!

5 5 Post about it: Book Review by Maisy Post I-Funny is a book by James Patterson that will really tickle your funny bone. It is about a boy named Jamie who lost his parents and sister in a car accident. Jamie made it through the car accident with only paralyzed legs. Jamie moved in with his uncle, aunt, and cousin Stevie. Jamie is starting middle school and is making some fast friends. Suddenly he gets a letter to go to the Funniest Kid Comic contest.
