For the next issue please send all articles and notices by Wednesday 9th July to Old Borlasian s Silver Trophy Dug Up 100 Years On In Australia British born Julie Marshall s husband found a Borlase silver trophy whilst digging in a field in Adelaide in Australia. Julie contacted the school after finding that Borlase is the only school listed with the same name as on the trophy. Julie visited us on the 4th June whilst on a trip back to the UK and presented the trophy back to Borlase. Julie said I m so happy to be able to contribute to the history of your school by returning the trophy and have very much enjoyed doing so. The trophy is five inches tall. After removing the grime and tarnish of possibly many years under the ground, it is obviously of good quality silver plate and the inscription reads C.G. Bidwell Junior Championships Borlase School Sports Celia Blakeway-Phillips, Development Director said, When I heard from Julie, it was such an exciting story and we hope to know more about how the trophy came to be buried in a field in Adelaide! We are thrilled to be adding the trophy to Borlase s historical archives. We found A G Bidwell on two of the cricket shields, dated 1917 and 1918 in the school cloisters. Julie has done some further research and found that Arthur Geoffrey was born in 1902 and Chandos George in1906 and that they are both Old Borlasians. There was also another brother Philip John, born in 1903 but he has yet to be confirmed as an Old Borlasian and the school has a N Bidwell on two of the school shields dated 1923 and 1924, so he is possibly another brother. 2 Would you like to get involved in another National Poetry Competition? The Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award is once again leading the call for new poetic talent amongst year olds, with acclaimed poets Grace Nichols and Simon Barraclough at the helm! You have until the 31st July 2014 to enter your best poems to be in with the chance of being selected as one of the top 15 or 85 commended poets. With a staggering 7,478 young people entering last year, the competition is certainly fierce but for many it is considered 'the one to beat'. The top 15 winners are invited on a week-long writing residential course at the Hurst Arvon Centre, Shropshire, or receive one-to-one mentoring with a professional poet (age dependent), and have their poem printed in the Foyle Winners Anthology, which is sent out to over 24,000 people across the UK. So what are you waiting for? Start writing, and take the chance; it could be a life-changing decision. Foyle is about what you want to write. So you can enter poems written in class, or poems you've written at home, from exercises or from your own imaginings. The competition is free to enter and poems can be of any length and on any theme. Individuals may enter more than one poem, however we strongly advise that you concentrate on drafting and redrafting your poems and send only a selection (we suggest no more than 4-6 absolute maximum) of your very best. Remember, quality is more important than quantity. Please or bring your poem to Miss Smith in the Literacy Room. Check the Literacy Board in the LRC walkway for more information. Cricket News Henry Cromie scored 146 not out for the U15's and has put himself in with a shout of being selected for the Old Boys game, which takes place on Tuesday the 8th July. On Monday, the yr 8 team lost by 7 wickets to Chalfonts, off the last ball of the game (in a friendly). On Tuesday, they had a great training session that set them up well for their first competitive game, as a combined U12 /U13 team to play Buckingham School, in the County Trophy (Knock Out), on Wednesday. This was the game of the decade, with some amazing stats; Toby Hill batted for 19.2 overs and was part of an 84 run opening partnership with Elliott Slater and had a huge influence as the team posted 124 for 6. Buckingham matched the required run rate all the way into the last 6 overs, when they started to accelerate. In the 16th over they needed 32 off 30 balls to win, with 6 wickets to spare. In the 17th they had cut it to 20 from 24, but Cavan Smith bowled well, only conceding 5, to leave them needing 15 runs off the last 18 balls. Opening bowler Ashwin Goyal did his best, but Buckingham wouldn't lie down, hitting 9 off the over to reduce the deficit to 6 runs from 12 balls. Cue super hero, yr 7 Leg Spinner Alec Bussell: (W1WW..) What a moment! The hosts were suddenly 7 wickets down and still needed 5 to win from the final over. Captain, Toby Hill had just about recovered from his 1.5 hrs of batting and he now had the weight of the world on his shoulders. Dot ball, followed by the wicket of their key man...8 down & 5 required from 4 runs. But from hero to villain? Wide, dot, 2 Wides, and Buckingham needed 2 runs from 3 balls, nerves were shredded! What composure though, the skipper bowled another dot and then took their 9th wicket. He then bowled a dot to win the game and round off a near perfect performance. The most exciting thing for the boys, is that they get to play Chalfonts in the next round and they can't wait to rectify Monday's result. Mr K Chappell Ski News Some excellent news from the slopes...georgia Keys in year 8 has been selected to the England Under 14 Team for the 2014/15 season.

3 Sports News District Athletics In the year 7 and 8 District Championships we were able to celebrate a range of successful performances. There were gold medals for Mila Welch (javelin), Chris Otun (long and high jump), Felix Wragg (discus), Charlie Peplow (long jump) and Michael Hall (High Jump) (all in photo on right). Mila also managed to break the 8 year old junior girls school javelin record with an impressive distance of 24m54. All our athletes performed exceptionally on a sunny demanding day in Hillingdon. Cricket Report As the sun has come out to shine at last, the cricket season has begun in earnest. The U12s have been particularly busy, with three matches in the last few weeks. Unfortunately, due to some mixed displays, two of those games ended in defeat, with the boys losing by 9 wickets to strong RGS side, and again failing in the run chase against Claires Court, despite some excellent bowling from Alec Bussel (4-6) and Callum Kunchar (2-3). However, due to an excellent batting performance from the whole team, they were victorious against Chesham, after having set them a massive 129 to chase. The U13s hold a great record of two wins from two, beating Chesham Grammar, and Highcrest, the latter win thanks to a great knock from Julian Whitaker. The U15s have had a rather mixed time, but after losing to Great Marlow, and tying with Chesham, they were able to comfortably beat Desborough, due to a fantastic all round performance from Krishan Goyal, who more than made up in class for the missing men. Tennis win! Our senior girls tennis squad beat Haberdashes Aske's 8-4 to win the Herts, Bucks and Oxon group in the Aegon Team Tennis National Championships. That win puts us into the Finals where we represent Bucks, Herts and Oxon and will be drawn against other 12 National group winners from the entire British draw. 192 schools have entered this competition, most of which are big hitting private schools! Well done girls and good luck in the finals. (team is Matilda Crowfoot, Sophie Lane, Beth Marriott and Holly Russell). Borlase Boat Club Last weekend was extremely busy on the water as Borlase Boat Club attended 3 regattas. The junior rowers competed at Thames Valley Park Regatta where the J15 boys eight (top right) won their event. The senior girls put out three boats at Henley Women's Regatta a J16 girls quad, a J18 quad of Megan Barry, Ellen Roberts, Georgia Mulraine and Kelsey Stoddart, who now have Henley Royal Regatta qualifiers Friday 27th June and a J18 coxed four of Olivia Radcliffe, Grace Bolton, Ella Capel-Smith, Emma Barnes and Akil Hashmi, who got to the quarter finals of the Regatta. Lastly the senior boys were at Marlow International Regatta at Dorney Lake, where the J18 quad of Rufus Biggs, Angus Warren, Chris Lawrie and Fraser Russell (bottom left) won the elite quads and the J16 boys eight of Alex Spicer, Oli Lewis, Ben Bownass, Angus Bolton, Joel Watson, Simon Jones, Henry Manthorpe, Ben Wright and Liam Thorpe came 2nd in J16 eights and 4th in IM3. With both the quad and eight posting quick times allowing them to prequalify for the upcoming Henley Royal Regatta, the Quad for the Fawley Challenge Cup and the eight for the Princess Elizabeth, which is an outstanding achievement as this is a J18 event! We wish both boys boats and the girls quad luck for Henley Royal Regatta!
