6 President s Report Through the many reports on the season available to you, it does not take another report from me to highlight that the on field performance of the club during season was extremely disappointing. With the exception of the Vets, no other team in the club was able to compete in the finals. Enough said. At Christmas the senior ranks were in state of chaos with a genuine concern that our Wilkins team were facing relegation. Some strong resolve quickly developed across the club to turn this performance around and pleasingly, the post Christmas period did show our 1 st XI in a much improved light, ultimately just missing out on a finals place. It is this strong resolve that our senior teams must take into season right from the first pre-season training session. If we are not prepared to show some fight, develop a plan, and execute it with discipline, then we will go nowhere. We have already started our planning for next season. Sean Nugget Arbuckle has been appointed as senior coach and we are delighted that he has put his hand up for this important role. We are very grateful for the role that Ben Springett has played as coach for the last two seasons. Work commitments mean he will not be able to have an extensive role in the club next year, but Ben has laid a solid foundation at the club in terms of what is required at training and this will no doubt be a great asset to Nugget as he seeks to take our performances to the next level. While discussing the playing side, it is again important to acknowledge the efforts of our captains who do play such a critical role in getting our teams on the ground each week. Our seconds and thirds did not have a lot of stability in terms of captaincy, so thanks to the numerous players who put their hand up to support the on field leadership each Saturday along with our regulars, Coma, Joel, Gazza, and Matt for their super efforts. Thanks too to Dallas for his work as Chairman of Selectors. Our junior ranks suffered a similar fate in terms of on field performance with no team competing in the finals. While we struggled for numbers early, some determined recruiting mid-season did see the ranks of our Under 12 team swell. This, along with further consolidation of our Milo in2cricket program (thanks largely to Ash Miller), was as an important step in fostering a more successful Junior program going forward. Wonderful to see Matt Delahunty put his hand up to support the under 12 s this year. Ryan continued to be a great contributor to the Junior program. Colin Wadsworth was, as always, tireless in his work with the Under 14 s. Dave Scott and Peter Bolger put their hands up as joint Co-ordinators and did a sterling job keeping the program on track. My goal for next year is to see more support from within our senior ranks and I know a couple of players are keen to help out here. Off the field, the club continues to be in good shape. Financially we are very strong and this is the product of a well administered fee program (thanks Stuart), a superbly run Bar (Matt s contribution here is awesome), some excellent social functions (good on ya Lethal) and of course the willingness of all our members (well the majority) to support us. From a social perspective, I have certainly been delighted with the way the club comes together we do have a very strong social fabric and this is important in attracting and retaining players. 7 Again Jamie Davison as Secretary has been the tower of strength on the committee. He just does so much work behind the scenes it is quite amazing he has such huge passion for Ainslie Park Cricket Club. Garry Walles has continued in his role as Vice President and as always has been a huge support to me and is ever reliable. Finally the task of getting 11 teams on the ground each week is not an easy one. It takes the dedication of a relatively small number of individuals who offer their time voluntarily to ensure our members get a game - our ability to engage in our passion is only made possible by the efforts of these people. Please make sure that you don t take any of these wonderful people for granted. They make YOUR CLUB tick! Have a safe winter. 8 Secretary s Report I have much pleasure in presenting the 33rd Annual Report for the Ainslie Park Cricket Club. I hope people do read everything in this report and take in what committee members, coaches and captains have to say, as a lot of time and effort goes into presenting such a detailed document. My report each year is fundamentally about thanking all the hard workers around the club who give up so much time voluntarily to make our club so successful. It is always my aim to convince others to join this group and see how much enjoyment you can get by being more than just a player at the club. My first big thank you is to Barry Westgarth who continues his great work as President. Your support and ideas for the club will bring new success to our great club. Stuart Minetti is more than just our club Treasurer. Stuart is involved and assists in all aspects of the club. I am sure people are still not aware all the work this guy does behind the scenes. In fact Stuart and Sean are currently working with other clubs in the RDCA on the restructure of senior grades and finding a better fixture format. Stuart is also responsible for finalising the format and printing of our Annual Report which is extremely professional. Thank you to Garry Walles who continues as Vice President and as always is an important and valued member of the committee. Garry was the deserved recipient of the Best Clubman award. This not only acknowledges all he did this season but for 20 years he has fulfilled nearly every role... and always without fuss. Leigh Walles continues as Social Co-ordinator and with some valuable assistance was able to produce some excellent social functions. The social side of the club this season was a huge success with great numbers not only from members, but people outside the club. It is great that people feel comfortable bringing their friends (especially the girls) to our functions. I know the highlight was the Hypnotist Night, which no doubt will be the talking point for months to come and is definitely on the agenda for next season. Matt Thomas as Bar Manager does an amazing job. I know he had a lot of assistance, but it still takes someone to oversee it all, which Matt does so very well. This is massive time consuming job, but also the financial backbone of the club. Matt thanks for bringing in some excellent profits for the club on the Bar again this season. I huge thank you also to Jess Peacock who took over the role as Canteen Co-ordinator. The ordering system with IGA East Ringwood seemed to work well again and Jess and her helpers did a great job of Junior Canteen and afternoon teas. To Scott McKibbin who works very hard behind the scenes keeping our statistics up to date, it is very much appreciated. He gets all the figures formatted for the Annual Report, which takes a lot of time. Nic Berry looked after the week by week entering of scores on the Internet and keeping all at RDCA up to date, which is one of those unnoticed jobs that is done so well. To our Junior Club a huge thank you to Peter Bolger and David Scott. They combined the role this season and in a tough battle with numbers did finish the season well. With a strong group of Under 12s and supportive parents, the future looks bright. They were greatly assisted as always by Ryan Willmott. Ryan has been involved in the Junior program for many years now and is very well respected by the kids and parents alike. We would also like to thank the individual team coaches and managers. Our Juniors are so important and without your help these kids just would not get a game. A side note is to thank the Bettess family who did an extensive letter box drop in our local area at Christmas to promote the club and get some more Juniors along and it worked. We value your time and support in doing this. Ainslie Park Cricket Club Page 4 of 74 Annual Report Season

9 Thank you to Keiran Croker for his excellent work coordinating the Veterans section of the club. We really hope this can be continued for many years to come as it is a very important part of our club. To Geoff Anderson for looking after all our property issues including all the line marking at the grounds and general maintenance. Sean Minetti joined the committee as senior rep and bought some new ideas to the table. I hope the experience will see him fulfil a role on the committee for many years to come. I also want to thank David Dallas Delahunty who continues as Chairman of Selectors this season and did a brilliant job. It is not easy phoning guys each week to play and working with the captains on the teams, but you fulfilled the role very, very well. From the club and committee I would like to thank Ben Springett who has been our coach for past two seasons. Due to work commitments he is unable to continue but I am sure we will see him around the club supporting wherever he can. He had an unfortunate accident at start of season, but still put in time and effort to make sure we had a training program and we truly appreciate that. Ben also did a lot of work in organising the new playing shirts with individual numbers on them for 1 st XI and have proved a huge hit. Thanks to all the captains of the teams for a time consuming and often frustrating job, but your roles are greatly appreciated by all at the club. The club has so many great people working for it in so many ways, but as always, we could have more. Don t be one of those people who sit back and says someone else will do the job, and then be critical of their efforts. Aim to be a part of the committee and/or do something positive and go out of your way to help our great club build to even better and bigger things in seasons to come. It is time for some of our players in the age bracket to get involved in the committee to bring new ideas to the table, but also to have a say. I know I for one cannot spend as much time at the club anymore so need assistance in keeping this great club running. We have some very important sponsors who I must thank for all their support. Our major sponsors Ultra Tune Croydon and Stockdale & Leggo Croydon. Our new sponsor in KFC Bayswater who helped us supply new playing shirts and jackets. They also sponsored some Junior awards. Long time sponsors in Croydon Travel, Mayerling Cellars, AKT Trophies, Considines Insurance, The Good Guys Bayswater and Completely Bazaar Whitegoods. Also to Chris Allan from Field Group Accountants and Financial Planners in Lilydale. Now onto next season and the committee is very excited to have appointed Sean Nugget Arbuckle as senior coach for season Sean brings a wealth of experience as a player and as we know is a great club person. He has very good ideas on discipline, a strong focus on fielding and fitness and involving all in training. I know the players are excited with the appointment and now hope they will follow his lead. Obviously it was disappointing not to get a senior premiership this season however I know we are not far away from ultimate success. We need to work harder on the field and earn these achievements not just expect them. We have a new generation at Ainslie Park now and I look forward to seeing new history being made in the very near future. Can I finally thank my wife Karen. She supports me so much with all the time and extra workload in this role as Secretary. I am extremely lucky to have such a supportive wife. I have pleasure in presenting this Annual Report for all the players, families and life members. I hope you enjoy what we have put together and I look forward to seeing you all safe and well back at Ainslie next season. Jamie Davison Ainslie Park Cricket Club Page 5 of 74 Annual Report Season

10 Treasurer s Report Season proved to be a challenging one both on and off the field. Our on field exploits are well documented throughout the bulk of the other reports. Our off field performance proved challenging, but it is pleasing to report we remain in a very strong financial state and yet were still able to present some real value to our membership. Sponsorship was maintained or improved with most existing sponsors and a change to our KFC sponsorship to Bayswater proved to be an inspired piece of work by our sponsorship guru, the travel agent from top of Main Street, Croydon (aka Tacka). A much improved package from KFC enabled the club to significantly subsidise a full range of playing and social clothing to our members. Thanks to all our sponsors; your support is invaluable to local community sport. Grants received from Maroondah City Council for our Gracedale Park synthetic replacement combined with a successful grant from Cricket Victoria which covers both Gracedale and the replacement of the synthetic at Ainslie Park already booked in for late August We are confident that a grant request to Maroondah City Council for this pitch will also prove successful in coming months. We made a number of improvements last season including the above mentioned synthetic pitch replacement at Gracedale. We also replaced some canteen equipment and purchased the new trestle tables and some chairs. The new season will see another synthetic pitch replacement at Ainslie Park and replacement of the long overworked temprite in our Bar. We will also need to look closely at replacing the vinyl floor covering in clubrooms. Our canteen managed to maintain its income quite well and much of this is attributable to a well managed canteen with special thanks to Jess Peacock as Canteen Manager for a job well done. Thanks also to all those girls/partners/mums/players who manned the canteen at various times throughout the season. Our Bar income was down due to a number of factors most of which were out of our control. However the one in our control was to get teams into finals and the resultant extra nights at the club. Hopefully better news next season. I have now completed 15 years on committee and have filled a number of roles at Ainslie and written reports for each of those years. Those who take the time to read our reports will know that we always thank the relatively small number of hard workers at our club. We should never take these people or the need to recognise their efforts for granted. The super workers tend to be on or closely associated with the committee and thanks to all those people and you will read each of their reports in this Annual Report. But I d also like to recognise a few others who keep on putting in with extra work here, there and everywhere. Working bees, call s for help with this or that, cleaning dishes, sweeping, cleaning up after social evenings. I know I ll miss someone, but the ones that stand out from my viewpoint include Geoff Leonard, Dave Delahunty, Lewis Davison, Ryan Willmott, and Ian Cubitt. And those of our younger players who made the time after the season was over to help clean up or rooms it is truly appreciated. My report wouldn t be complete without the most sincere of thanks to Jamie and Barry; great blokes to work with to keep our club working so well off field. Finally to Garry Walles, a true gentleman and deserving winner of Best Clubman. To our wives, Sue, Karen, Linda and Wendy for your wisdom in letting your partners use their spare time so well! 12 Financial report notes These notes are provided in the interest of clarifying key aspects of the Ainslie Park Cricket Club Financial Report for season 2008/09. Focus is where there is a change in income or expenditure from season 07/08 that is sufficient to warrant clarification. 1. Clothing income increased considerably due to a complete new package of clothing being made available to members also at substantially reduced rates from sponsorship. Accordingly expenditure also increased markedly, but it shows unsponsored costs to club. 2. Sponsorship and grants received continued to improve extra income from new sponsors and grants from Cricket Victoria. 3. Reimbursed expenses are a one-off entry for insurance payout for carpet damage. 4. Little overall change, however reduced Juniors and Veterans (3 to 2 teams), but improved senior membership fees payment. 5. Bar shows a significant drop in patronage due to a variety of factors. 6. Canteen showed a modest increase in income and expenses. Most of the increase in expenses was payment for Canteen Manager which included maintaining supplies, making afternoon teas and staffing canteen in the mornings. 7. Fundraising maintained its income with reduced expenses. 8. Bad debts written off include the past few seasons to properly close off this accounting entry. 9. Business costs include a donation of $1,930 to Victorian Bushfire Appeal raised at Hypnotist Night. 10. Capital improvements include items such as replacement synthetic at Gracedale Park, a new scoreboard and new trestle tables for clubrooms. 11. Maintenance returns to normal without one-off expense of replacing light fittings. 12. Utilities reduced as we had been significantly overcharged for electricity due to estimates being made as electricity meter was unable to be accessed until lock was replaced. 13. Less expenses for specialist coaching. 14. Improved player performances and a paid player. 15. Reduction due to less expenditure on equipment. 16. Less in fines and charges to RDCA. 17. No mid-winter training program. 18. Increased fees for professional umpires and more umpires available for A Grade. Ainslie Park Cricket Club Page 8 of 74 Annual Report Season

14 Bar Manager s Report Another good year from behind the Bar, although numbers will be down from last year. This is due to a variety of factors the lack of action in March being the main one, but the loss of the temprite and a couple of weather affected games hasn t helped either. Overall everything seemed to work fine with the exception of the temprite finally dying late January after 16 years of loyal and hard service. A new temprite will be in action next season and a memorial session will be announced to show our respects early in the season. The Slurpee machine continues to be a success both from a function and a hire perspective and we re now making a return on our investment including several hires to other clubs. Al this wouldn t have been possible without help so I d like to thank all the guys who helped pick up stock and jump in when I wasn t available to lock up. If it wasn t for people like Lewis, Tacka, Barry, Dallas, and Garry to mention a few, not only would some of the nights have been shorter, but there would be a lot less cash in the bank for next season. Thanks to the guys who help run the Bar when I can t be there - it is the major source of income for the club and it makes a difference to be able to run it like we do which comes down to having a team that the committee feels it can trust. Other clubs don t have this so I hope all the players respect it. Thanks again and I ll see everyone next season. Matt Thomas Ainslie Park Cricket Club Page 10 of 74 Annual Report Season

15 Social Secretary s Report After putting the hand up for another season of socializing it was down to work from the very start. With a few boys putting their hands up to help organising and running the events it made life a little easier. So we sat down as a group and came up with ideas and plans for each night. This was a huge help and made the social outlook for the year look good. As per usual the first event of the year was Grand Final day. This year was a little different as the mighty Hawks were playing the pussycats in the big one. So the day was left up to others to run. They did are great job and they day ran smoothly. We did pop our heads in to help clean up (the beer). The next two functions were the regulars on the calendar. Trivia Night which was a great turn out yet again and the Christmas party which also a good turn out, especially the kids. Congratulations to Ryan s table on winning the Trivia Night and thanks to Andrew Peters for running the program. Thanks also to Santa for doing a great job with the kids (Cubes) After the Christmas interval if was of course the Ladies Day/Night. This was a change from previous years with the RDCA making all sides participate in the Saturday game. So we changed from the day to the night with great success. If was a fantastic turn out on the ladies behalf and of course if there are ladies around there are also plenty of blokes. Back to School was the next function on the calendar. An old favourite for the boys and although not a huge turnout, a fun night until a few unwanted guests turned up. Luckily some quick thinking and sensibility from some of the guys and the incident was quickly avoided. Thanks to those with level heads. Last but not least was the big Hypnotist Night. Plenty of organising, mainly by Jamie and the night was a huge success. It was a risk to pay a lot of money to the entertainer, but it paid great rewards. It looks in the future there will be more of these nights and let me tell you if you missed this one don t miss the next one. Thanks go out to all the people that help before, during and after the events. It was another successful year and hopefully members keep supporting these events and the club will be successful. Thanks also to my girlfriend Dee for all the flyers during the season. Leigh Walles Ainslie Park Cricket Club Page 11 of 74 Annual Report Season

18 Coach s Report First of all I would like to thank all those people throughout the year that helped me out. There are too many to mention but you know who you are. I would like to make special mention to the Big Ship who did take over the role a bit with some help from others when I stupidly decided that ten fingers were too many and that nine and stump was much better for me; so thanks for that help. Well another cricket season that started with such promise has come to an end. And unfortunately it didn t end the way in which we anticipated with not one senior side to play in a final series. The year started off so well with a few new signings that made for a lot of excitement around the club that once again we would be a force in RDCA cricket. But with an unlucky start with injury, the signs weren t looking good early with the 2s struggling for experience and depth which in turn filtered down through the grades. Unfortunately we as a club couldn t overcome the slow start and struggled even to fill all sides. Towards the end though, things did start to turn. The 1s started winning games; the 2s were getting closer and closer to some wins. There were some really good individual performances in the second half of the year, so hopefully as a club we can build on the positives that have come out of this season and move forward because I feel that we are not too far away from becoming a strong club again. I would like to make mention of some people I feel have come away from the season with some positives. First of all to those early to mid twenty year old players in the 1s, you guys are starting to get the feel for 1s cricket and starting to believe in your ability and the results are starting to come with all your hard work. Blokes like Hammy, Crooty, Karl and Cyrus are starting to play more consistent cricket. Especially the Big Ship who not only got his first half century in the 1s, but also managed to get his first century in consecutive weeks. Well done to Cody to; this bloke has come from indoor cricket and not played too many games of outdoor before. But we threw him in the deep end and asked him to keep in the 2s where he did a great job; not only that he came away with a ton towards the end of the season. Some of the best cricketers don t ever make centuries (like me) in their whole career, so well done. I would also like to make mention young Josh Bettess. This young bloke has still got a couple of years of Juniors left in him, but still manages to teach some of the senior cricketers a thing or two about how we should be playing the game. He turns up to 90% of training, trains hard and he has been rewarded for all his effort. The guy started in the 5s and by the end of the year was playing 2s cricket; well done. So well done to all for the season passed. Hopefully we can see you all next season in which I know will be a more successful year and keep at it because we aren t too far away from that premiership. Ben Springett Ainslie Park Cricket Club Page 14 of 74 Annual Report Season

19 Wilkins Cup 1 st XI After finishing 5th in our first year of Wilkins in , unfortunately ended up with the same result, just missing out on the finals by one game. In what was an even competition all year a couple of close one-day losses would prove costly. In the end we only managed to win one of the 8 games we played against the top 4 sides. Having said that I thought our performances this season were much better, despite injury setbacks and some close losses. We won 4 of the 5 games after Christmas with some good signs for next year. We need to be better adapted to the one-day game from Round 1 next year, and be more committed to winning games, not just playing well. The time and excuses for getting used to the one-day format, and playing sides in Wilkins is over; it is time for results next year. Bowling Again the bowling appeared to be one of our strengths, and on occasions this was certainly the case. However results and statistics suggest our best bowling was not consistent enough to earn a finals berth. Adam Bryant was an early standout but was unfortunately hampered by injuries from round 2 onwards. This didn t stop him winning the bowling average so well done AB. The signs are good for next year if we can get the big fella playing on a consistent basis and he is certainly the type of bowler you can build a premiership team around. Ashley Moore was a handy addition to the team with his tight bowling and wicket taking abilities. Josh showed some great signs in his first full season for a couple of years and Pea was his consistent self yet again. Pat Marulli was also hampered by injury, but showed in spells he is still causing trouble for batsmen at the top level. Craig Ham was a welcome addition after the Christmas break with consistent effort and line. The ability is there, we just need to manage our injuries (pre-season effort), establish some bowling plans specific for the one-day format, and we have a bowling attack more than capable of winning a flag in Wilkins next year. Batting Was an area of improvement from the previous year, but realistically most batsmen probably underperformed against their natural ability. Nathan Croot had a solid year and took out the batting average award (well done Crooty). He is good enough to tear them apart in Wilkins, and hopefully with a more settled year next year he can really show people what he is capable of. Deano played his part well after slipping down the order for team balance and played a vital role in controlling the innings. Aydn was doing well before his departure and Moorey contributed well when required. Our batting is our biggest area for improvement and we showed in glimpses what the batting is capable of; we just need to put it together more consistently and with confidence. Sean Minetti and Trent Sier came into the side after Christmas and it is no coincidence that is when we started winning with their solid opening contributions setting the platform each innings. They should both be looking to exciting times next year. Congratulations to Trent on winning numerous awards for a stellar season, most of all the Club Champion and Bolt Medal awards. You won t find a more deserving clubman and all round good bloke, well done Shippa; super effort that. Fielding Still an area for improvement and cost us at least 2 games I can think of. Thank you to Trent for filling the vacant wicket keeping role post Christmas. This year I thought our commitment to the team and club was much improved and we started to bear the fruit in our performances after Christmas. All players had a full year (barring injury), which is a great sign for commitment and team dedication. We introduced Davin to first grade cricket, welcomed Adam Bryant to the club and had some younger blokes play their first games in the first XI. All good signs for next year. On a personal note, thank you to all the guys who played for the firsts at various stages. I believe we are getting that winning mentality back and I hope to see everyone back next year, committed, hungry and believing we are on the verge of something great. It has been a long time coming, but finals beckon, and based on this year we should have every reason to believe we can go all the way next year, not just simply aim for finals. 23 A Grade 2 nd XI Captaining a side is something I have wanted to have a go at for a while now so when I was asked before the season I didn t hesitate and was excited for the challenge. Looking at the players I thought I might have at my disposal, and the side making the previous season s grand final, I believed anything could be possible. Hoping to achieve that elusive flag that has evaded our grasp at Ainslie for so long. The loss of players through injury to the club hurt the firsts badly, with players like Springo, Pat, Dan, Adam, Dillon, coupled with the late starts of Joshy and Hammy and the mid-season departures of Aydn and Dave, meant that the depth that promised so much for the club had disappeared and left holes throughout the seconds and indeed the whole club. None the less, finishing last and getting relegated is unacceptable and we must bounce back. The main positives for me were some of the guys getting their first taste in the firsts. Davin, new to the club, started in the seconds and made it look easy went to the ones and is a good addition to the club. All the young guys who got their first taste, Dan, Scott, Dillsy and Cookey all should be looking to get back in to the firsts and establish themselves as ones cricketers and not be happy with playing seconds. Other positives were the introduction of some good young players into the seconds for the first time. Guys like Della, Nick and Boony who got a taste early showed good signs and should be pushing to get back in. Cody impressed all, first with his keeping, then with making his first ton and Levi who came in for the last game and smashed it all round. I would like to see some more young guys like Westy, Chuck, Doshy and Funky take over and become top 2s players and push for higher honours. I would like to thank all the guys that played in the twos this year, although we didn t get as many wins we would have liked, we still had some fun. Springo, who scored for me when he was unable to play because of injury and then captained a few times after Christmas before work commitments meant he couldn t play, then Lewis who took the captaincy for the last couple of games. I would also like to thank all the girls, headed up by Jess, who worked in the canteen and always had delicious arvo teas for us. Even though the twos finished last, I think that the club is on the right track and results shouldn t be far off. We need all hands on deck to make sure the success we desire is achieved. Let s make sure that we all make it to pre-season training and return Ainslie to the premiership winning powerhouse it should be. 28 D Grade 3 rd XI The 3s started off the season with nominated captain Andrew Johnstone unavailable due to family commitments. I knew I would be in the side for most of the year but was keen for a younger player to take a more active role with the captaincy, especially when we were fielding. In round 1 Ashley Miller took on this role and did a great job as we defeated Wonga Park in a great game. I thought we were in a great position to challenge these top sides for most of the season. Unfortunately this was to be our only win in a frustrating season. Ashley was injured the next week and out for a few weeks and I was stuck with the job. The season is probably summed up a lot in the stats with no centuries, only two half centuries and only one batsman over 200 runs for the season and in the bowling department no one over 10 wickets. It was a real shame as we had a good group of guys who really did try hard but were just outclassed from much more experienced opponents. Most weeks we had 80-90% of the side under 25yo when most sides we played were the opposite. I am not sure how these other clubs get these veterans to help out and play Saturdays but we always seemed to have it against us. Saying that I want to focus on some positives. Early in the season I would like to thank Chris Allan who came down and offered some great experience and I know enjoyed playing with his son Daniel on many occasions. Later in the season the help I received from Glen Bluey Thomas and Lethal was invaluable. I know both of them admitted to me they shouldn t be playing threes however I needed the experience so thanks heaps for helping me out. Also to Dallas and Dave Mckibbin who filled in on many occasions at late notice. In the bowling stocks we had Matt Delahunty, Nick Dobell and Daniel Allan for most of the season. They all bowled without a lot of luck. All of these guys have been severely hampered by the switch between one and two day games and getting consistency in what they needed to do. I would like to thank Cale Nelson who wicket kept most of the season. I think Cale needs to work harder on some areas of his game including concentration and patience with batting. I encourage him to work hard as I can see a bright future if he wants it. Another highlight for me was bringing 14yo Josh Bettess into the side. He was our best bowler on a consistent basis. I hope the experience he gained from playing against guys 2 and 3 times his age will stand him in good stead for future. Later in the season the inclusion of Levi Millar into the side was also great to see and I hope he plays a full season next year as has a lot of ability. Although we didn t win another game a real highlight for me was playing against Scoresby away in a two day game. We bowled first and did a great job for 70 overs in keeping them to 250. After our efforts the weeks before this, this may not look like a great effort but believe me it was. It was a shame we couldn t have a consistent younger guy captaining the side but due to injuries and needing to fill other sides it had to be. However next season I really encourage someone to take on the role. I know they will enjoy the challenge. I also hope a few more of our veteran players consider helping out the seniors on a Saturday as we need the experience I also think we ALL need to work a lot harder on our fielding and fitness. We don t need to be super athletes but we need to do the simple things better. Our ground fielding, catching, patience when batting and bowling was consistently below that of other sides. We all need to try and train harder and the results will come. Good luck to all next season Jamie (Tacka) Davison Ainslie Park Cricket Club Page 24 of 74 Annual Report Season

33 F Grade 4 th XI Captaining F-Grade for the first time was indeed an interesting experience. It was a season where I learnt the difficulties a captain faces each year: Afternoon tea, drinks, keys, scorebook, pen and new pill and organising blokes. This was before I had even stepped out on the ground. On the field I encountered challenges that taught me a few lessons. We began the season with a new group of blokes that had a handful of F-Grade games between them. We had old stagers like Bolt and Block, guys like Jordan, Swaino and Lukey, and a mix of Juniors including Jimmy Hunter and Little Cubes. I realised from the first game against Eastfield that it was going to be a long and challenging season. We struggled to set a decent score early on in the season. In a couple of games we struggled to make over fifty. This may have been due to our 11 players consistently changing due to availability in the higher grades. However, as the season progressed a small core group of players played regularly throughout the season. This meant that some form of stability in the team could be maintained. Jordan Klewer has proved this season that he is an asset in this grade as a bowler and batsman. He made several good scores and developed constructive partnerships that not only assisted in the team being competitive, but also brought other players into the game. His value as an opening bowler was second to none. He consistently bowled overs in his opening spells and was very much unwilling to relinquish the ball. Jordan s contributions to discussions on the field demonstrated that he has a keen sense for the game and is always thinking about where the next wicket might come from. Another player that was a regular contributor to the team was Luke Deacon. Luke kept for every game and provided insightful interpretations on which direction the game might be heading. Luke s batting improved over the course of the season and his overall approach to cricket matured. A highlight of the season was in the final game when Lukey took the ball and snared 6- for. Jordan took the gloves and managed to take a catch and stumping off Lukey s bowling. Luke has the potential to take on a leadership role at the club in the near future and I look forward to seeing him take the next step. I would also like to thank Block for his tireless efforts this season. Sometimes it is not easy for a leggy to bowl in the lower grades, especially if the batsman swing out of their arse. However, Block was always happy to take the ball, from either end, and roll the old arm over. Block is a wicket taker and I hope that he can continue to improve and outfox batsmen at whatever level he plays. I played most of the season with Bolt. We had many interesting conversations on the pitch, some were productive, some were counterproductive, but all were valuable. Even though we did not see eye-to-eye on every occasion (if any), I did value his experience on the field. Another highlight from this season was batting with Dad against Warrandyte and seeing him cop bouncer after bouncer. I m not a sadist, but instead his steely determination to duck, weave, cringe and cower short delivery after short delivery just to survive was something every young cricketer should experience in their time. Finally, I would like to thank everyone else that came and pulled on the whites this season. I got to meet many new faces around the club and also reinforced some of the relationships I had developed in years gone by. I have thoroughly enjoyed the company of all those players that played in F-Grade and hope that they all come back next season to develop their skills further. I did not achieve any of the personal goals I set myself this season, but feel that I learnt more than any other year that I have played. 38 I Grade 5 th XI Having been promoted up a grade from last season this season was always going to be a challenge. Going into the first game we had a competitive side, but unfortunately we lost to Lilydale by one run and this seemed to set our season up badly. As hard as the whole team tried we took until the game before Christmas to win and that was thanks largely to a quick 70 odd from Scott Mckibbin and a great century from Leigh Walles including 10 sixes. Unfortunately that was virtually the last we saw of these two players as they were promoted and this left our team short on experience. At the same time young Josh Bettess was rewarded for good performances and promoted to the Thirds. We won 2 games after Christmas, one was against East Ringwood who were Grand Finalists and we also beat Boronia to knock them out of the finals. Overall we won 3 games and lost 9 with a couple of those being very honourable ones but we also had some heavy losses. We played Juniors during the season and they can all hold their heads high as they gave their all in every game they played. As mentioned above, Josh Bettess performed very well all year. Other juniors to play were Josh White, James Hunter, Darcy Higgins, Rowan Peters, Josh Murray, and Simon Chiem. James & Darcy only played a couple of games, Rowan played many and performed admirably and has a great future in cricket, handles pressure well. Josh Murray played one long innings in a pressure game and I am sure he learnt a lot from it. Josh White shows a lot of promise as a bowler. Simon Chiem has a very good temperament. Although our season was largely unsuccessful result wise I was heartened by our players great attitudes even though we struggled in a lot of games, everyone tried their best and all gave great team support. Apart from one incident we gained respect from our opponents throughout the season. I would like to thank all the ladies that provided us with great afternoon teas at home games. They are much appreciated when you see some the opposition ones supplied. Thanks to all the other captains for their support at selection particularly Matt who works in well to get last 2 teams on the field. Also thanks to Dave Scott and Barry Westgarth for helping out early in the season when numbers were down. Trevor Panozza and Tim Flahavin are a constant support also and help a lot on Saturdays. I also thank the club for allowing me to be captain for another season and being able to play a couple of games with Leigh; this was most appreciated. Congratulations to all trophy winners and well done Trent Sier on a great season. On closing I just hope next season can be a lot more productive for all sides and we can celebrate some premiership success. Garry Walles Ainslie Park Cricket Club Page 34 of 74 Annual Report Season

43 L Grade 6 th XI While season 08/09 for the 6 ths looks ordinary on paper we finished last, got relegated and had to forfeit 3 games, there were still quite a lot of positives to come out of it. As a team we were competitive all year nearly beating both grand finalists even though they were 3 rd XIs, beating Scoresby s 4s who finished 3 rd and knocking Croydon Ranges out of the finals in our last game for the season with a 100 runs in 10 overs run chase. Where the 6ths has really achieved its goals is by enabling the influx of new senior players Junior Gooch, Perry, Matt Donald and Seb Best amongst others, who ve got involved not only on the field but off it as well. Just as important it has enabled us to keep juniors playing on Saturday afternoons with over 10 different juniors from our 16s & 14s playing over the season. Not only does this give them valuable senior experience but by making them part of a senior team they re much more likely to hang around during the transition to seniors. The biggest challenge for the 6ths is dealing with the wild fluctuations in player availability this season saw 1 dayers where no Juniors, Vets or ring ins were required and 2 dayers where we struggled to get the 5ths on the park. At selection it was not uncommon to see players move from on and off the available list each week. As these movements happened from the 1 s down the effects were felt through the whole club with most teams having to regularly field players out of their grade. Interestingly the 3 times the 6ths had to forfeit we had a team; it just had to be broken up to fill holes in the higher grades. A big thanks to Dallas, Tacka, Ryan Willmott & Garry for your help with selection and the usual Saturday morning shuffle to try and get 6 sides on the park. Thanks also to the Junior parents that have helped out on Saturday mornings with last minute selections, transport etc - especially Phil Styles and Dale Burton who regularly helped out with scoring, organising the team and most importantly of all providing players. Thanks to Hard Man and the Corcoran family as well, it makes my job so much easier having people around that not only do whatever s needed without complaining but take the initiative as well whether it be umpiring, putting stumps out or just sub fielding, thanks. Finally thanks to everyone who had a trundle in the 6ths this year, for the most part people seemed to enjoy themselves and we got to give a lot of people a chance to play cricket that they otherwise wouldn t have. Next season let s see if we can get even more players down, get the right mix of Vets & Juniors in the lower sides and most importantly of all get some senior flags on the wall. 60 Masters 1 For the second in a row, our season came to a screaming halt following a comprehensive semifinal loss this time at the hands of Croydon. In summary, We won 5 of 8 games losing 3 of the last 4 games of the season. At Christmas we were undefeated and atop the ladder. Tough games against Wonga and Croydon loomed after the break. We were defeated in both games. Most comprehensive victory of the year was against Lilydale winning by 70 runs. Batting stars for the season - o Turnley 189 runs o Werner 188 runs o Francis 177 runs o Wright 174 runs Bowling stars o Colverson 11 wickets o Nixon 9 wickets The last 2 games we played, both against Croydon, proved the lowlights where we were spanked for an impressive 400 runs yet only captured 3 wickets clearly lacking penetration in our bowling. Missing Geoff Nixon in both these games was a big loss. Improved batting from Dave Werner and Dave Wright along with the continued impressive form of Larry Turnley were the season batting highlights. Craig Colverson s bowling, especially before Christmas, was the bowling highlight along with the very steady Geoff Nixon. Congratulations to Mark Frances for winning the season MVP award with his 177 runs, 5 wickets and continued outstanding fielding. A couple of young recruits for next season is what is needed for the team to remain competitive at the level. Thanks to all who were involved. While we had come to expect better results, the season was still highly enjoyable. Finally, on behalf of the Vets, our deepest sympathies are passed on to our team mate Russell O Toole on the very sad loss of his beautiful wife Sandy in March. Our thoughts are with you Russell and your boys. Cheers Bash Barry Westgarth Veteran s 1 Report Ainslie Park Cricket Club Page 56 of 74 Annual Report Season

61 Legends Overall, a very satisfactory season for the Legends. As all Veterans games were on the same Sunday, the Club only fielded 2 teams, but this meant filling teams was not a great problem. The standard of Veterans crickets is improving rapidly at all levels, so leading up to finals, the Legends did well to win 4 of their 6 games. The team, coming off a flag, is renowned for its strong batting (rather than its bowling), and this was seen in the first 2 rounds when only a total of 7 wickets were lost. Consecutive losses to the 2 Grand Finalists, Warranwood and North Ringwood were setbacks, but the last 2 games were very satisfying wins against perennial finalists Croydon and Bayswater Park. Unfortunately, the lack of bowling depth stood out in the semi final against eventual premiers North Ringwood, who now show the way in Over 50s with their tremendous depth in both batting and bowling. There were many strong contributors with the bat. Openers, C Allan and B Kane scored well in excess of 150 runs, and were well supported by Fuehrer Walles, Quick walker Leonard and Father of Adam Bryant, who all scored in excess of 100 runs. Amongst the bowlers, Terry Bryant took 6 wickets, Captain Bobby Toogood took 5 wickets and Luke Dullens took 4 wickets. But it was the lack of wicket takers that was eventually our undoing. Andrew Stray did a sterling job each week behind the stumps, while Keiran Croker (one sensational catch) Hedley Ham, Derrick Guye, Alan Kent and Jimmy Moore (another sensational catch) provided solid contributions each week. The team contributed 3 players to the 2 Representative games, in Chris Allan, Brendon Kane and Terry Bryant. The strength within the club in batting in both Legends and Masters stood out, in the first rep game, where Ainslie provided 3 of the 4 opening batsmen for the Legends and Masters game against Box Hill. The club encourages all older cricketers and the friends to come and have a game. There is a perception amongst some that Vets cricket is hit and giggle and certainly all games in Legends games were very friendly and enjoyable. However, we do a month of Sunday morning pre season, as the standard in all competitions, and particularly with the batting, just gets stronger and stronger. 64 Junior Coordinator s Report Junior cricket at Ainslie Park this season saw three competitive teams entered in the RDCA, at Under 16, 14, and 12 age groups and a non-competitive side at Under 10. Clinics were conducted early in the season at three local primary schools with a view to create an interest in the club at the Under 12 and 10 age groups. Thanks to all those who gave their time to help conduct the clinics. We ran Milo In2Cricket program on Friday evenings for a ten week period. Ash Miller was terrific with the kids as they all responded and looked up to Ash. Some of the expressions were priceless. One example was Nick Delahunty having fun in the down time between drills making sure his new Milo hat was well broken in by jumping on it. Well done Nick! Also, I like to thank Nick Westgarth and Daniel Allan for filling in at very short notice on a couple of nights when Ash couldn t make it. You kept the fun going and it was seamless for the kids. Unfortunately the Under 10 non-competitive side that was started had to be cancelled and the majority of the available players joined our Under 12 side. The Under 12s struggled for numbers early in the season, although by the end of the season we had used eighteen players. Special thanks to Gemma (aged six) and Emily (aged ten) who played early in the season to help get this team on the field. The majority of this side will be able to play in the Under 12s for at least the next season. The Under 14s were once again coached by Col Wadsworth. This side was fairly static throughout the season and were unlucky not to get a couple more wins. Ryan Willmott s Under 16 team also struggled for numbers in the latter part of the season. This gave the opportunity to some of the Under 14s to play in a higher age group which will a valuable experience for those players. This season saw no Junior teams in finals, although the experience gain by our bottom age Under 12s will stand them in good stead for future seasons. Congratulations to all the Junior Award winners for this season with a special mention the Dillon Bettess who won the batting and the bowling averages for the Under 12s and the Junior Club Champion that s a fantastic achievement Dillon. Many thanks to Peter Harper for his collation of the scores for the RDCA each game for all grades. Peter did a great job getting the stats in on time. Thanks to all the coaches and team managers who put in a lot of time and effort so that we can field sides each week. I would like to personally thank Dave Scott for his large contribution to the Junior Club this season. I look forward to seeing you all safe and well in season Peter Bolger Ainslie Park Cricket Club Page 60 of 74 Annual Report Season

65 Under 16/3 The season started with the perennial struggle for numbers. Having 3 Yarra Valley boys was not ideal, but they helped the team immensely when they were available. Sean Cubitt and Ryan McMurray pulled out headline performances at different stages in the season, Sean taking 5 wickets versus Croydon North. Yet all of the boys would be the first to admit that this season was not their finest, for the team, or individually. Many of the team were of top age and we expected to have a bit more of a shot at finals this year, however, due to lack of numbers, not to mention an obvious nosedive in consistency, it was not our year. We only put one win on the board, against Croydon North in the only one day game and managed to lose outright to a team that we dismissed for 116 in their first innings. As well as being restricted by a lack of numbers most weeks, the team also had a horrible run with injuries throughout the season; Darcy Higgins, Josh White, Gavin Styles and Jimmy Hunter were all missing at various stages of the season. Jimmy missed a lot of it with his foot surgery, but managed to play the last game in a moon boot, taking three wickets and making 48, showing just the determined type of player that he is. Josh Bettess development came along nicely making 73no in one superb innings and also playing in the Senior 2nds at the end of the season. Nic Burton continued to improve as did Josh White, both proving to be handy bowlers when called upon. Aside from the morning performances, it must be noted that many of the players also featured regularly in the senior grades, improving as the season endured, and ensuring a smooth transition for the top age players. It is this aspect that I find most pleasing about this team and the members within it. They all put their hand up for selection throughout the year and were willing to fill in when the grades required. Retaining Juniors to play on into Senior competition can be a relatively simple task, that is, put time into them and give them a go, showing them they are required. The ones that you make feel wanted will stay. They may not always have the potential to be a Chandler Grade cricketer, but they will put everything they have into the club. A very big thank you to the effort put in to the Junior club by our Coordinators this season, David Scott and Peter Bolger. Your efforts made the club run very smoothly throughout the season. Thank you to my wonderful girlfriend Jess who ran and coordinated the canteen this season. I know it was greatly appreciated by all in the Junior club. Thank you Jess! To Colin Wadsworth for his support coaching the under 14s. You have been a rock for the team you have coached over the past few years and the club has benefited greatly from your endeavours. Also thanks to Jamie Davison, another who is tireless in his efforts for our club. Barry Westgarth and the committee have supported the Juniors well and their efforts are greatly appreciated by all in the Under 16s and in the whole Junior club. Finally, I would like to farewell James Jimmy Hunter, Cale Major Nelson, Darcy Superstar Higgins, Ari Where is Dey, Robert Corcoran and James Debney from the Junior ranks. It has been a pleasure to coach you for the past few years (in Cale s case, six) and I look forward to playing Seniors with you, and, hopefully, many of the other Juniors coming through in season 2009/10 and beyond. 67 Under 14/2 The Under 14s this season had a fairly ordinary year as far as winning games go. Although, when you look back on the season, we had quite a few games that we only just lost, or with a bit of luck, could have won. To the team s credit, the boys just kept on trying. There are a few guys who deserve a mention and congratulations for their efforts over the season: Our captain Pat Bolger. Pat did a great job of captaining the side, which at times was quite difficult. He made sure everyone had a bowl and tried to make the batting line-up as balanced as he could, with not everyone willing to go up the order. His ability to set the field was a highlight of his captaincy. The batting performance of Brad Wadsworth throughout the season was very reliable. Brad opened most weeks and got us off to a steady start. He had several very consistent games with the bat, winning the team s batting average. One of our new recruits Andy Moore s performance over the season was also fairly consistent with bat and bowl. He won the bowling average for the team and he took some great catches and run outs, which would have been great if they were captured on film. It was also great to see some new faces at the club this year two more new recruits from Croydon Ranges Eden Coombes and Kieran Hogan, and we also welcomed Nick Lant to the team. A special mention also needs to go to Gavin Styles for playing in the Under 16s for most of the year to help out with numbers. When he did get to play Under 14s, he was always welcomed back by his teammates. Thanks to the players for their support and efforts throughout the season and congratulations to another trophy winner - Connor Phelan for winning the coach s award. I would also like to thank the parents for their support of me and their boys. Parent support definitely goes a long way and makes the coach s job a lot easier. On ending my report, I would like to especially thank the following people: Peter Harper my dutiful Team Manager. Peter scored all year without complaint and really loved wearing his colourful jacket!! He would always have the stumps up and circles marked before I arrived at the ground. Peter Bolger and David Scott always helpful as usual in the field. I d like to thank them for their work as Junior Co-ordinators. John Hogan for umpiring when required. Pat Moore for helping at training. Finally, due to work commitments, the season was my last year of coaching. I have worked with most of these boys since Under 10s and the work done over the last six years has been very rewarding. The guys have a lot of talent and character and get along really well. They were a nice group to work with, eager to learn and to have a few jokes and laughs together. Good luck to the boys as they enter Under 16s next season! I know they will be in good hands with their new coaches in season Colin Wadsworth Ainslie Park Cricket Club Page 63 of 74 Annual Report Season

69 Under 12/3 The Under 12s started the year without enough players, which made winning games pretty hard. With insufficient numbers in the Under 10s, those who were keen decided to play above their age group in the Under 12s. Despite these challenges, everyone did the best they could. After the first few games the team was re-graded to the 12-4s where they put in some good individual efforts, whether or not a full team was available. The youngest player was only six years old, but was prepared to have a go to help the team bat out their overs and provide an additional obstacle in the field. The team did not have a lot of experience, but it was great to see all the players improve and gain confidence as the season progressed. The players were ably led by captain Dillon Bettess, who put in a number of strong performances with both the bat and the ball, as well as wicketkeeper for some of the time. The newer players were also able to witness some great games from David and William Killen who both show lots of potential, both in their first season for Ainslie Park. As the season went on Liam Hope and Jeremy Burton also began to perform well. The New Year brought some new players to the club and the team, and this helped the team to full strength and some more convincing wins. In the end, the team just missed out on finals, defeating the eventual champions Olinda in the second last round. It is hoped that all the players enjoyed their season and that they all come back ready to play and develop further for the 2009/2010 season. There are plans to get the team back together prior to the 2009/2010 season, build on the lessons learned this year and enjoy some more fun and success next year. The Club did not have an Under 12s team in 2007/2008, so it was great for the club to be able to field a team. If the players all return they should have a strong and very competitive team as all but one still qualify for the Under 12s again in 2009/2010! Thanks go to Matt Delahunty for coaching the boys whenever he was able to do so, and to Ryan Willmott for his constant support and encouragement for the team. Thanks to parents Sheila and Clinton Killen and Allana and Len Bettess for jointly team managing and organising the team generally and to all the other parents who helped and stayed around on Saturday mornings to support the team.
