We are planning a club road trip to Santa Barbara this fall. Car pool up on Friday, September 21, and bowl at MacKinzie Park LBC that afternoon. Followed by a group dinner in Santa Barbara that evening. On Saturday, September 22nd, we will bowl on Santa Barbara LBC s artificial carpet green, returning to Newport that evening. Something different, lots of fun and your chance to try out bowling on an artificial green. Since we need to know how many rooms to advance reserve, we need everyone who is interested to sign up on the trip announcement at the club ASAP. Ray YELLOW JACKET HARD COPY LIST: The following people have elected to be removed from the mailing list for the hard copies of the Yellow Jacket now that they can down load it from the internet. If you would like to join the list let me, Jay know. J. Altobelli, Compton, Dinkins, Gill, Hargraves, Kozmas, McSparrans, B. Nunes, Ed Quo, Roystons, Sheppards, D. Stennes, & J. White. June s President s Message You ever hear that lawn bowling is a fading sport in the US? Not at Newport! In one week we signed-up fifty new members. Congratulations to all of you who worked so hard to make our Open House a success. (I missed this day as I was vacationing in Spain). Now we all must work on the hard job of retention. Each new member has an assigned Mentor and should have been in contact with their mentor by now. If you haven t been contacted let John Groothuis (949) know and he will look into your problem. While each new member has a mentor to show them the club and some of the basics of the game, all of us have a part by greeting new members as we see them, helping them with their position responsibilities during games and in encouraging them in their play as they learn the game and improve their skills. We continue our efforts to grow the club by exposing our fun sport and great group of folks to our friends and to groups who rent the club for special occasions. In fact, on June 21 st in celebration of Summer Solstice, we will be having an Invite A Friend(s) Night to our Thursday Twilight bowling. A special 6:00 start time is planned in case your guest(s) are coming from work. Don t forget to remind them to wear flat soled shoes. I hope all of us have a friend left that we haven t already exposed. I know our new members must have several friends that they want to come out and try to bowl. June 21 st would be a great day for this. In June, our normal Saturday morning bowling will be interrupted for the U.S. Playdowns. See the accompanying article on page 4 for details. Club Ladies Pairs and Men s Pairs Tournament is scheduled for Tuesday June 12 th. Check the bulletin board for details and sign-up.

Coons recommended a revised member roster to include our new members. OTHER MATTERS Stennes inquired about the left-over sand. Hargraves replied that it is available to those who want it. The next board meeting will be held on Thursday, June 14, at 3:00 p.m. There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 3:50 p.m. WELFARE CONCERNS - By Chairperson Theresa Casanova First the good news: Our President and his first lady, Julie, took a trip to Spain on the 4th of May. We missed him at the Open House. On Easter Break he took his family to the Bay Area to visit friends and relatives and to see the sights. We think he deserved a vacation. He s been working so hard at the club. And it shows! We all missed you while you were gone! Jan Garrett took a trip north for a change and to visit relatives. She drove her car. (Good Girl.) Barbara McCowen Stopped by the club on a Saturday, didn t bowl but visited and enjoyed a couple of hours with us. (She did participate with a few of our members at the Santa Anita club May 19 & 20) It was good to see Eddie Bower back bowling in May. He said his reason for recent absence has been some health issues of his wife, Barbara. He says things are looking better now. Sad News: We are sorry to hear that Betty Barnes, a beloved past member, recently lost her fiance of many years. She had also just lost her daughter. So sorry Betty, our thoughts go out to you. ANNE TEJADA - OBITUARY - Theresa Casanova Anne was born in Louisiana. She had two brothers and one sister. At 16 she moved with relatives to San Francisco. She joined the U.S. Navy and became a Wave, spent three years, then went to college and then became an elementary school teacher in Walnut Creek. She had two children and four step children. While teaching she contracted Meniere s Disease which effected her equilibrium and loss of hearing in one ear. This forced her to resign teaching as she was falling (at one time). Nothing could be done for her. She finally wore one hearing aid to help, the doctors were baffled and didn t know how to handle, but suggested she try Lawn Bowling in She joined the Walnut Creek Bowling Club and began to practice, but kept falling. After a year the falling stopped, and she continued to bowl, and in 1982 she won the National Women s Singles from the Berkeley club which she also joined. She was a member of 4 Berkeley clubs, Walnut Creek, Berkeley, Oakland, and San Francisco when living there. When she and X married (17 yrs.) they lived in Orange County and joined the NHLBC and Laguna Beach LBC. Her last wishes were that she would like to leave part of her heart in all 6 bowling clubs. She loved Lawn Bowling! We will miss her very much. Rest in Peace Anne!

4 June Weekend Play Reserved for U.S. Playdowns - By Ray Norris Page 4 The SWD has reserved both our greens for four consecutive weekends in June for playing the U.S. Playdowns qualifying singles and doubles. First and Second place winners of these Playdowns will represent the SWD in the US Championships. On Saturday and Sunday June 3 & 4 we will be hosting the initial rounds of the Men s Pairs. The Men s Pairs finals will be played on June 9 th and 10 th. On Saturday & Sunday June 16 & 17, we will host the initial rounds of the Women s Singles. The Finals of Women Singles are scheduled for June 23 and 24. Laguna Woods is host to the Women s Pairs and Long Beach will host the Women s Singles on these same four weekends. Both greens will be fully utilized for the initial rounds of both the Men s and Women s events. While both greens are reserved for the Finals play the next weekend, we may find that they are not fully engaged. If this proves to be the case, Saturday club bowling on either June 9 th or June 23 rd may be possible. I will check with the tournament chairperson and will post a note as to the green s status on our club bulletin board. I will also send an to club members whom I have addresses for. In any event, there is club bowling scheduled for the last Saturday on June 30 th. Our club will need to furnish Markers for the Women s Singles play. The Marker s job is very simple. A Marker is responsible for centering the jack to begin each end play and is occasionally asked which player holds shot. They also mark any delivered toucher bowls. Markers do not do the measuring for points. A signup sheet will be posted at the club for volunteers. Look professional by wearing whites. Club yellow shirt are encouraged if you have one. Open House Pic.s for those of you who don t have access to the Yellow Jacket on the Internet Web Site.
