4 ABOUT THAME TOWN CRICKET CLUB Thame Town CC is a well established cricket club in the County of Oxfordshire. Situated in the centre of the historic market town of Thame, the Club enjoys a picturesque setting at Church Meadow. The club was founded in 1874 and organised cricket has been played in the town since this date, with suspensions in and The Club moved to Church Meadow in 1975, taking a lease from Oxfordshire County Council and created the cricket ground and pavilion from scratch from the existing low-grade agricultural land and derelict farm buildings. The Club caters for serious, committed and competitive adult and youth cricketers as well as those who enjoy only the occasional game. The 1st XI currently plays in the Counties Premier and the 2nds and 3rds in the Cherwell. It fields three adult teams on s and one for certain Sunday friendlies, plus a T20 team in midweek. As for junior cricket, we currently run teams at 4 agegroups in Oxfordshire and Bucks leagues, plus a number of friendlies. Last but not least, we are organising friendly matches for the Women s team this season. The Club is accredited to Clubmark and is recognised by the England and Wales Cricket Board as one of four Focus Clubs in South Oxfordshire, by virtue of its standards, youth coaching programmes, Clubmark status and its links with Lord Williams s School. In 2016, we had 51 adult playing members enrolled, 92 junior playing members, 25 women playing members and over 100 social and family members. We had 15 UKCC-qualified coaches in the club, plus an overseas player/coach from South Africa. HONORARY LIFE PRESIDENTS P.G.BEARD, Esq. A.BENNETT, Esq. M.DAVIES, Esq. K.G.PATEY, Esq. S.TAYLOR, Esq. 5 CHAIRMAN S MESSAGE - looking back at 2016 In their first season back in the Counties Premier (HCPL) for some time, the 1st XI consolidated their place. Well done to Mike Higgs and the squad for keeping us all captivated for the entire season! Our place in the HCPL allows us to offer an attractive player pathway into county cricket and we will continue to make significant investment in this area. We welcome Mike Beard and Will Rooney as Captain and Vice-Captain this season. Good luck to both. Chris Jeffers Jeffcock debut as 2nd XI skipper saw his team win Cherwell s Division 5 in 2016, with just a single defeat. Matt Furness will take over this season and continue with our aim to close the gap of divisions between 2nd and 1st XI. Thanks again to Chris and the 2nd XI for their huge efforts last year. Vim Desai and John Phippen led our 3rd XI to 2nd place in Division 9 North, narrowly missing out on top spot, with a superb blend of youth and experience. Promotion this season is one of the club s strategic priorities as we strive hard to offer more opportunity for juniors to play adult cricket and to enter a 4th XI into the league by Our Women s section made excellent progress in 2016, as they developed their hard-ball cricket skills. Recruiting more female members and organising friendly matches are on the cards for this season, during a year when the Women s world cup will be in the UK. Thanks to Sheena for all her hard work. Our Junior section continued to thrive during 2016 with growth in membership and a highlysuccessful Kwik Cricket tournament for 6 local primary schools. The junior section is another strategic priority in which we will invest, as we train more coaches and recruit team managers. After many years of junior team management, Ian McStay will be standing down, while continuing to help with coaching. We would like to thank him for his outstanding contribution to the club s junior section. John Phippen will also be winding down from his coaching and team management of the U17s - thanks also to him for all his hard work and dedication. The new clubhouse development has made significant progress with planning approval and major grant funding. The next few months will be crucial as we look to secure the remaining funds required to start building in September. Bricks are still available to purchase if you would like your name up on the wall of fame! Angus Lachlan announced at the AGM that he would be standing down as Chairman. Angus has held the position for 10 years, succeeding acting-chairman Rob Brooks following the untimely death of the previous Chairman John Fulkes in On behalf of the club and committee, I would like to thank Angus for his enormous contributions over the years. Angus will remain on the committee as Vice- Chair and will remain very much involved in the club, especially in the clubhouse development project. I would also like to thank all our Life Presidents and Vice-Presidents, noting with great sadness the passing of Colin Britnell and Lt. Col. John Connelly earlier this year. We have another exciting year ahead in 2017, with a number of new developments and I hope everyone will enjoy all that the club has to offer. Matt Swain Chairman, Thame Town Cricket Club 5
6 NEW FOR 2017 New Sponsors We are delighted to welcome and thank J Bennett & Son insurance brokers, who now join Mobalpa as one of two principal club sponsors. Without the support of such local businesses, the club wouldn t be able to progress at the speed with which we have in recent years. Please contact Mark Nicholl at J Bennett & Son for all your company s insurance needs! We also welcome our new fixture book sponsors - XT Brewing, Massage Matters, Robert Stanley Optician s, Mark Fellowes, Russett Jones and Helpful Hirings. Thanks to Block9 for their patience in the printing process and to Sam Lachlan, Guy Holmes and Charley Smith for the various design work. Committee, Coaches & Team Managers As we continue to develop the playing side of the club, alongside the new clubhouse project, we are pleased to welcome a number of people to the committee and coaching staff, who will help run our ever-growing and diversifying range of cricket activities. Joe Phippen joins as Fixture Secretary, in addition to his excellent work on our Website and Social Media presence. Mike Higgs joins as Director of Cricket, a new committee role we have introduced with the aim of implementing and being responsible for our objectives for cricket development. Paddy Harris formally joins our Junior section training body, working with Angus Lachlan and John Patey in the U9 age group, while Roger Fenwick joins our U13 age group alongside Richard Carr, as a team manager in this very popular age group. Will Sutcliffe will also support Mike Higgs in championing our junior player pathway to the adult XIs and will support the junior section with mentoring, coaching and team management. I am hugely grateful to everyone who has stepped forward and volunteered to help us this season. We are always looking for more people to get involved in the club to help us continue to progress at pace. Girls Cricket Academy This Summer there is a very exciting opportunity for girls in Oxfordshire. Lydia Greenway (ex-england international) is bringing her cricket academy, Cricket for Girls, to Thame Town CC. It is open to girls up to the age of 18 and will be run on Friday evenings for 7 weeks, starting on 5th. The evenings will be split into two age-groups, each session lasting 90 minutes. The age groups are:- under 11 and years olds. Lydia has put together an impressive coaching team of ex and current international players and coaches. Any girls booking into the academy will have access to top class coaching for 7 weeks. All Stars Cricket All Stars Cricket is a really exciting, ECB-driven, national campaign which provides boys and girls from 5-8 years old with 8 weeks of non-stop fun. The activity and game-based programme is an entry-level programme, providing your child with the foundations to begin a lifelong love of physical activity in general and cricket in particular, while making new friends in a safe and fun environment. 22 WOMEN S CRICKET The first-ever softball cricket tournament for women in Oxfordshire was held at Thame Town CC on August 30th, 2015, with teams from various local clubs. The tournament was opened by the then or of Thame, Nichola Dixon and was won by one of the Thame teams (in the purple shirts). Women s Cricket in Thame was effectively born on 17th 2015, with the launch on that evening of the Crick-Fit programme, with the support of Oxfordshire Cricket Board. The programme, a mixture of exercise and basic cricket skills, proved a huge success in its first Summer and over 40 women and girls took part. This season, women and girls will be able to take part in coaching sessions on Thursday evenings, provisionally starting on Thursday 27th April, from 7.00 pm until 8.00 pm. The first friendly match will take place at Church Meadow on Sunday 7th, starting at 2.00 pm, between a Thame XI and a team from Oxford CC. Furthermore, Sheena Beard is investigating the possibility of entering a Thame team in one of Oxfordshire s softball tournaments during the season. For any women or girls interested in joining the club or just trying out their skills, please contact Sheena on or her at women@thamecricket.org.uk. 22

Players should Play because you want to do so, not to please coaches or parents Remember that skill development, fun and enjoyment are the most important parts of the game Be attentive at all training and coaching sessions Work equally hard for yourself and your team - both will then benefit Recognise good play by all players on your team and by your opponents Be a sportsman - win or lose Play to the Laws of the Game and accept, without question, all umpires decisions Control your emotions. Do not interfere with, bully or take advantage of any player. Code of Conduct for Parents & Carers CODE OF CONDUCT FOR YOUNG PLAYERS It is vital to the well being of our cricket club that parents/carers take an active interest in it, and in the progress of their children. There is nothing more stimulating to young people than the thought that their efforts are appreciated. Whilst we are always looking for volunteers to assist in the running of the Club, and you will always be welcome, all we ask is your support. Through that you can be assured that we do take the welfare of our young players very seriously. Set out below is a code of conduct for the benefit of parents/carers. We instil in our young players the importance of playing the game fairly and respecting opponents, and that can be reinforced by parents/carers. Encourage your child to learn the rules and play within them Discourage unfair play Never argue with officials Never force your child to participate in sport Set a good example by recognising fair play and applauding the good performance of all NEVER punish or belittle a child for losing or making mistakes Publicly accept the official s decisions Support your child s involvement and help them enjoy their sport Use correct and proper language at all times Verbal or physical abuse of Club Officials will not be tolerated.
