3 Thank you Ian A massive thank you from everyone at BYG to Ian Mepham who is standing down as Club President this year. Ian played 236 games for the club with his highest score of 117 against Jarvis Brook in July 1977 (next highest score in the game for BYG was 15!) Ian also took 199 wickets with best bowling figures of 7 for 27. He also kept wicket, taking 71 catches Mr Versatile! As you can see from the picture below on a BYG tour in 2011, Ian does like a nap especially in the bar (to which he was obviously heavily fined!) The family name has been etched in the club s history since its formation in Ian s father Norman and his Uncle Maurice were instrumental in the formation of the club from the beginning. Look forward to seeing you up at the ground in the summer Ian. 3

Can be found in the pavilion most Saturday afternoons drying up the dishes Another keen tourist as can be seen below with fellow club icons Tony Harris and Cecil Skilton on a BYG tour in the 1980 s, and with a young (WITH HAIR) Dominic Bowen on a windy cliff top in Hastings against Clive Vale. A true club Legend. 4

7 Clubmark Accreditation The ECB continues to work with Sport England on the pioneering club accreditation scheme Clubmark to develop a vibrant and healthy club cricket infrastructure. As an already registered ECB Clubmark club, BYG are prioritising junior development, creating a benchmark for high quality community club cricket. Working with Visually Impaired Cricketers We held a pilot session in 2015 which was thoroughly enjoyable for both the participants and coaches alike. It was a massive learning curve for the club, and something that we are very keen to progress further with once the work on the ground has been completed. 7

8 The club are incredibly grateful to Sport England for their kind grant awarded to us for the ground development which started in earnest in January this year. Ground Development Project Overall Project Cost ( 75,165) Sport England Grant ( 63,165) Amount To Achieve ( 12,000) Extract from The Cricketer Magazine in February Underpinning the club s rise, as is the case at a number of such clubs across the country, has been a Junior section that has grown rapidly since it s inception at the turn of the century. Another factor has been the influence of Bob The Cat Bevan, President for 15 years between 1995 and 2010, who played his part in the fundraising efforts for a new pavilion that was opened by Lord Coe in Whilst it is fantastic news that the club is going from strength to strength both on and off the pitch and at all levels, boys, girls, Ladies and the Men s teams, we do have loans to pay back to the tune of 12,000 for the current ground developments. In order to achieve this we will be putting on several events and fundraising activities which we hope everyone can support. See full details in the Chronicle on Page 6 You can also help support the club by joining the 100 Club For 10 a month there is a chance to win 100 a week or 500 at the end of the year. Full details are on Page 24 8

9 Junior Season 2017 Volunteers The club is run 100% by volunteers, so we are very reliant and appreciative of anyone that is prepared to give up their time to assist with the running of the teams. Whether it is making cups of tea, helping put up and take down practice nets, umpiring and / or scoring or doing something more substantial, we always need more help. If you are able to assist in any way, don t be shy speak to the coaches and we can find something for you to do! Subs/Coaching fees The fee for the summer will be 65. This is made up of a 20 membership fee and a voluntary contribution of 45 (which we can claim gift aid on, with your prior agreement). We feel this is very good value in comparison to other junior clubs. Cheques made payable to Bells Yew Green Cricket Club or by bank transfer. Fees should be payable ASAP. Lloyds Bank Bells Yew Green Cricket Club Account No Sort Code New Members If you have friends or family that are in the area and have children that would like to give Cricket a go, then please let us know. We do not have waiting lists at BYG and we are happy to take all comers, including parents, who may have not put on a pair of whites since they left school. Registration You should have all had your registration a couple of months ago. It is very important that your child is registered with the club. If not registered it is very difficult for us to keep you posted on all cricket matters, as this is generally done by , and it is also where any important medical information can be provided. If you are a new joiner, we refer you to the below link for new registrations. 9

19 Bells Yew Green Cricket Club History By Pat O Brien Immediately after the Second World War the Local Council which was probably Uckfield Rural District Council commenced the first phase of building in Rushlye Close there was therefore an influx of residents which was an aid to the formation of the cricket club and a community spirit which also brought about the building of the Village Hut now more properly called Bells Yew Green Village Hall. Bayham Cricket Club (The Marquis Of Camden s Bayham Estate) Bayham Estate certainly in the 1930 s and possibly before that had their own Cricket Team. At the end of 1939 season it was decided to disband the team due to the approach of The Second World War. It was not reformed in 1946 despite having a ground and pavilion and some remaining equipment. There were a few players who had played for Bayham before the Second World War who joined Bells Yew Green when it was formed in When Bells Yew Green Cricket Club had to vacate their original ground in 1963 the Marquis of Camden offered the use of the present ground at a peppercorn rent. The Trustees of Bayham Estate still retain the Freehold of the present ground which as will be seen later is the subject of a long lease. One of those involved in Bayham Cricket Club prior to the Second World War was Alan Crump who in the 1938 and 1939 season was one of the leading batsmen for Bayham. Alan Crump was later to become heavily involved in the formation of Bells Yew Green Cricket Club The Formation of Bells Yew Green Cricket Club Many of what were to be founder members of the club had returned to the village after the war and were seeking some form of recreation. A meeting to discuss the possible formation of a Cricket Club was held in the Mess Room of Turner s Timber Hauliers and Merchants on 25 th July A fairly large number of those attending the meeting were employed by Turners Mr R (Bob) Brewer it appears was asked to chair the inaugural meeting. The meeting agreed the formation of a Cricket Club and elected a Committee to progress this. Those elected were: 19

20 Secretary: Mr H Garman, Assistant Secretary: Mr W Dann, Treasurer: Mr H Corby Committee: Mr Ashmore, Mr Brewer, Mr Harris, Mr Crump, Mr Walters. Lord Roderic Pratt was invited to become the First President of the Club and he accepted this invitation. Roderic Pratt was the brother of the Marquis of Camden and at that time lived in Highfields the property opposite the present Cricket Ground. The First Committee Meeting of The Club was held on 1 st August 1947 Mr R (Bob) Brewer was appointed the First Chairman of the Club at this Committee Meeting. At about the same time as the Cricket Club was being formed there were moves afoot in the village to raise funds for the building of a Village Hut (Hall). There were a number of members of the club who were or had been involved in fund raising for the Hut. There were some members of the Cricket Club Committee who also served on The Hut Committee. There were discussion between both committees concerning fund raising and it was agreed to run various joint events. It was initially agreed that profits from fund raising would be split one third to The Club and two thirds to The Hut Committee this seems to have heavily weighted against the Cricket Club especially as the expenses were on a 50/50 basis. However the Hut Committee were already well organised and need not have agreed to any share. At the first committee meeting it was agreed that the club should be called Bells Yew Green Cricket Club. It was also suggested that the Bayham colours of blue and yellow should be adopted by the club subject to the approval of the Marquis of Camden. The secretary was asked to contact the Marquis of Camden. The Treasurer at the first meeting reported a balance of 9.0s 0d by the end of the year this had increased to 38. 8s 4d. 20

21 A sweepstake on The November Handicap was arranged and produced a profit of almost 20. This was split 50/50 between The Club and The Hut Committee. The November Handicap Sweepstake continued for many years as a fund raising event. The early committee meetings spent much of their time in investigating the use of a suitable cricket ground, various options were considered and eventually agreement was reached with the tenants of Rushlye Farm, Frank and Bertram Pomfret, for the use of a field at the rear of Rushlye Cottages. As far as can be established there is no historic record of any correspondence with F & B Pomfret or any formal record of the agreement which is referred to in the minutes. The field behind Rushlye Cottages and can be viewed from the existing ground. There were various discussions at committee meetings relating to the preparations required for the new ground. During 1947 there was a meeting with a Mr Winter who gave advice as to what needed to be done to provide a suitable playing surface. Also during the year there was much discussion concerning the help required with the preparation of the ground this appears to be the start of a common thread of appealing for help with ground preparation. The Marquis of Camden offered the Pavilion from the now defunct Bayham Cricket Club This was a wooden building with a single room where both teams changed it also had a fairly large veranda. The pavilion was dismantled and moved from Bayham by The Members and transported to the ground at rear of Rushlye Cottages where it was re-assembled The pavilion was later moved in a similar manner to the Nursery Ground and used for several years there until the advent of the mobile classroom building. In addition to the pavilion The Marquis of Camden donated two sight screens for use at the ground The President attended a committee meeting during the year and promised to provide cups for batting and bowling. He also agreed to provide a team for the inaugural fixture The Presidents Match which was arranged for 2 nd May Within the minutes of the meetings in 1947 there is an item relating to the hire of coaches to take members to away matches in One of the coach companies approached was Gilberts Coaches of Tunbridge Wells. Gilberts replied that they would only have a coach available if the Prisoners of War were sent home. It would appear that Gilberts had a contract with H. M. G. to transport P.O.W s to various working locations. The Committee arranged for a Notice Board to be installed on what was on old sign post on the triangle between the Lamberhurst Road and Hawkenbury Road near the bus stop where it remained for many years. Over the years many events were publicised on this notice board and in the season the teams were posted on a Tuesday for the forthcoming weekend. Members were expected to check the notice board to establish if and when and where they were playing on the coming Saturday and Sunday 21

22 A Ladies Committee was formed mainly to provide catering arrangements for fund raising events. The Ladies Committee continued in existence up until the late 1980 s The next major item to occupy the first committee was playing and ground preparation equipment Early in the year The Club received an offer from Frant Cricket Club to purchase their old mower. Following various discussion and an inspection of the mower by a local mechanic (Reg. Robinson) it was agreed to purchase the mower for Repairs were required to the mower and these were carried out by Reg. Robinson. This was the start of the club purchasing old mowers for many years to come and inevitably these mowers always caused problems and more time was spent in repairing and starting the mowers than in mowing. In October it was agreed to open a bank account at Barclays bank Tunbridge Wells The subject of the first Annual Meeting of the Cricket Club was the subject of various discussions at committee meetings in October and November. It was finally agreed to hold the meeting at The Grosvenor Hotel in Tunbridge Wells on 20 th January The cost of hiring the meeting room was agreed with The Grosvenor Hotel at 6s.0d As very few members had their own transport to attend the meeting in Tunbridge Wells it was agreed to hire a bus from Maidstone & District Bus Services at a cost of 1.19s.6d. those travelling on the bus would pay a fare of 1s.0d. 1 st Annual General Meeting of Bells Yew Green Cricket Club Held at The Grosvenor Hotel Tunbridge Wells on 20 th January There were 43 members and friends in attendance. The format of this meeting had been agreed by the retiring committee and has and is generally the same for every Annual General Meeting to date. The Treasurer gave a detailed explanation of the balance sheet on which there was a profit of on income over expenditure of 38.8s.4d. Election of Officers and Committee Members President: Lord Roderic Pratt. Vice Presidents: J Walters proposed that all existing Vice Presidents be re-elected en-bloc the proposal was seconded by M Harris and carried unanimously 22

23 Chairman : R Brewer, Secretary: H Garman, Treasurer: H Corby Committee: N. Mepham, A. Crump, M. Harris, J.Ashmore, J.Walters Captain: A Crump, Vice Captain R Brewer Selection Committee: A Crump, R. Brewer, J Walters, C Ashmore, N. Mepham Umpires Colonel Mordaunt, F. Groves, F. Mepham, W. Pilbeam Qualification for Membership After a long discussion M Harris proposed that all local persons interested would be eligible for membership anyone outside the village interested in membership could be elected members at the discretion of The Committee the proposal was seconded by H Corby and carried Annual Subscriptions: These were agreed as follows: Playing Member: 7s.6d, Non Playing Members 5s.0d. Junior Members 2s.6d. It was also agreed that subscriptions must be paid by 15 th May 1948 Ladies Committee Mrs Garman, Mrs Smith & Mrs Dann agreed to continue with the help of Mrs Whittington who had volunteered to help. Colonel Mordaunt offered to give any young players advice on cricket also he offered to give the club a series of lectures if arrangements could be made. Colonel Mordaunt further offered to contact the M.C.C. to see if they could provide any surplus cricket equipment that may have. The Chairman thanked Colonel Mordaunt and stated that The Club would be taking advantage of his kind offer in the near future. Annual Dinner It was agreed that the committee should arrange an initial Annual Dinner at the finish of the playing season. To finish this brief history of the first year of our cricket club are a few of the fixtures arranged for the first playing season of Some 39 fixtures were arranged and a few of those which are recorded here are teams with which we still have, or had up until fairly recently an association. Frant, Groombridge, Mayfield, Lamberhurst, Paddock Wood, Rotherfield, Hawkenbury, Linden Park. 23

29 29 Chairman s View Chris Fox As I write this in mid March, with a month to go before the start of the new season, this is a snap shot of what is happening right now at BYGCC Our winter coaching programme which has been running for the boys and girls of secondary school age since last September is coming to a close. Pre season training for the younger boys and girls and the Senior players is in full swing. The major ground levelling project and decking outside the pavilion is close to completion. We are busy coordinating fixtures and grounds 5 senior men s teams, 2 Ladies teams, Development teams, U15 Girls, U14 Boys, U13 Boys, U13 Girls, U11 Girls, U11 Boys and soft ball tournaments for younger boys and girls. We are in discussions with a major national / international company re possible future sponsorship of the club. BYGCC is one of the launch clubs for the new ECB Allstars Cricket initiative aimed at bring 50,000 new boys and girls aged 5-8 into the game. Plans are well under way for launching a range of BYGCC merchandise We continue in discussions with Wadhurst CC about closer future cooperation. Coaches are busy finalising plans for summer coaching beginning in late April. It s come a long way over recent years and is now a full 12 month a year operation with, I estimate over 12,000 player hours in terms of playing or receiving coaching every year. When I first moved to the area in the mid 80 s and spoke to a local cricketer (who shall remain nameless) he advised me nice bunch of people but a small tin pot club, you should look for better. Fortunately, Ian Mepham, now our Club President and then a drinking buddy in the Elephants Head, persuaded me otherwise and I m enormously thankful for that and what this great club has given me over the last 30 or so years.

30 I m sure much of the story surrounding the growth of the club has been told elsewhere in this Chronicle so I won t repeat it but it is a source of great pride for those of us involved. On a personal level, seeing boys develop as players and make a major contribution to the club, on and off the field is fantastic, and to be able to play in the same side is something very special. Captaining the BYG side that won the Greensand League for the first time in 2012 with a team that included 8 players who d learnt their cricket at the club was probably my proudest moment at the club. Other highlights undoubtedly include the U16 team winning the Sussex Junior Cricket Festival in 2006 and us winning the Cuckmere Valley League for the first time in Above all is the wonderful people I ve met and continue to meet at this club and who with their energy, insight and friendship make BYGCC something truly special. Who knows where we ll go in the future as a club but I do know, as my time as Chairman draws to a close, there are so many good people to take it forward in whatever direction that might be. Mike McInerney Clubs don't survive without volunteers and BYG are no different. We are so lucky that so many people give up their own time for free to help the club in their own way. One such person is Mike McInerney who spends countless lonely hours at the ground preparing wickets and much much more for the love of the club for Senior and Junior games and numerous tournaments. Thank you Mike - It is very much appreciated. 30

34 Thinking Cricket You may recall having seen various communications from us in 2016 about Thinking Cricket. Peter Lamb, owner of Lambs Larder and a sponsor of the cricket club, developed a concept that enabled cricket clubs to not only access Live Scores from their own games but at the same time generate advertising revenue for clubs too. The system was a big hit with the BYG players and followers alike who managed to keep instantly up to date with scores from the other games going on. We even had people lounging by their swimming pools around the world on holiday following the action live! The App enables you to turn any Android Phone into a 3G or WiFi webcam that posts images and linked sponsor ads directly into your existing Twitter Feed. This enables you to broadcast live scores throughout the day on Twitter without any human input. Your players, families and friends can still use Twitter as they normally would with their comments, photos and updates going into the timeline as normal. Peter has further developed the system for 2017 and for full information on how it all works / pricing structure, and how to join up to follow the action, visit the website at: We already have two kind sponsors signed up at BYG as shown below, and should you wish to join up as an advertising sponsor too please speak with either Peter at Lambs Larder or Andy Brooks. 34
