1 Newsletter Chapter of Society of Decorative Painters Volume 30, number 5 Sept/Oct 2012 President s Letter Lynn Schick taught us a Rosemary West project at our July meeting. Here comes Autumn.. my favorite time of the year. It must be because of all those beautiful colors, warm days, cool nights and Pumpkin Pie! What a great time to be creative. Thank you both for sharing. The Luncheon is just around the corner. Do you have your tickets yet? Have you sold your raffle tickets, painted ornaments, made up a basket or painted an auction piece? Please bring in your donations at one of these events instead of the day of the Luncheon. It makes it so much easier for the workers. If possible also please bring your raffle tickets back to Sharon Stearns before the Lucheon. The chance table is always swamped the day of the Luncheon. Carol Kafer says there are still a few Luncheon Tickets left. her at ck4132@verizon.net. Thanksgiving and Christmas will soon be here, please bring in donations for the Food Pantry so the most unfortunate among can celebrate the holidays. We are still collecting old clean linens for AWSOM and receipts from Shop Rite and Weiss. Sharon McArdle is collecting gently used clothing. We are still looking for ideas for community service for next year. Thinking of our Members We lost a dear member last month. Isabel Budd lost her long fight with cancer. We will miss her talent and het sharp wit. The Chapter send a donation to St Luke s Hospice in her memory. Dot Falcone had her 2nd knee replacement. Directions to Skytop Lodge Follow I-80 or I-84 to I-380. Continue on I-380 to Exit # 3 PA 940. At top of exit ramp turn onto PA 940 East (toward Mount Pocono) to traffic light at PA 611. At the light make a right and a quick left at the next light back onto Route 940 East. Follow Route 940 East for 3 miles, turn left onto Route 390 North. Follow Route 390 North for approximately 10 miles through the towns of Cresco, Mountainhome and Canadensis. Entrance to Skytop Lodge will be on the left, 3 miles from the traffic light in Canadensis. 2

You, as Chapter members, are encouraged to use the form below. Final selection will be made, and the award will be presented at our annual Luncheon, October 28th. There are still a few favors out, if you have them could you please finish them. Most important, we need pieces for the Chinese Auction (in addition to painted pieces, any handmade crafts, jewelry, knitted, crocheted pieces, etc). We need more baskets and ornaments for the tree. There are still some Luncheon tickets left. If you want tickets send a self-address stamped envelope to Carol Kafer at 3315 Masons Lane, E Stroudsburg, PA The directions to Skytop are on Page 2. Remember if you are entering the Art Contest, your piece has to be delivered by 10:00 am, covered and unsigned, painted over the past year and the subject consistent with our theme Farmers Market. Sharon Stearns still has raffle tickets. Note the fee for a seminar is $30, but if you sell 40 tickets, you are on your way to a free seminar. Even if you have to buy 20 of them, you are ahead by $10. Since we are having 2 national teachers and a bus trip next year, please do your part to help make this years luncheon our biggest success ever Below is the tag to put on donations to the Luncheon. Always label donations so you will get credit towards a free seminar next year. Requirements for a free seminar are selling 40 raffle tickets and volunteer 2 other projects for the year. 4

Spirit Members of the Month Above, Ann Sorensen, was our July Spirt Member. Ann has served on our Board and taught many times over the years.

She is presently our 1st Vice President. Eddiejo became an active and important member as soon as she joined our chapter.

5 Spirit Members of the Month Above, Ann Sorensen, was our July Spirt Member. Ann has served on our Board and taught many times over the years. To the Left is Eddiejo Bunker with Nadine Lawless receiving August s award. Eddiejo was selected by the membership. She is presently our 1st Vice President. Eddiejo became an active and important member as soon as she joined our chapter. Nancy Pitcher taught us a beautify Magnolia watercolor at the August meeting. SEPTEMBER 14TH SEMINAR - NADINE LAWLESS CDA Original Design by Lynn Deptula Base coat with 2 coats of Black Green. Sand lightly between coats For a more solid coverage additional coats may be applied. METALLIC STRIPING: Measure 1/2 from outside edges & mark lines with chalk pencil. Then divide the inside of the large square into 9 equal sections (approx 3 1/2 each). Using Magic Tape, tape off 1/8 wide squares. When this is completely dry, remove the tape and repeat this process for the vertical stripes. When these are dry and the tape is removed put on the pattern with light transfer paper. PAINTS WILL BE SUPPLIED - If you want your own paints, they are listed on next page. 5

6 SEPTEMER 28 MEETING - FOLK ART SOAPDISH TAUGHT BY CAROL MARAKOVITS Prep Instructions: Palette: (feel free to substitute colors) Raw Sienna Olive Green Antique Rose Old Gold Lemon Yellow Shale Green or Celery Green Country Red Plantation Pine Brandywine Black Burnt Sienna Sand Uniform Blue Antique Gold Black Green Marigold Antique Maroon Lt Buttermilk Asphaltum Traditional Burnt Umber Other Supplies: Sandpaper & usual painting supplies PLEASE READ BEFORE MAKING YOUR SURFACE SELECTION. A line drawing is supplied so that you can determine the size surface you will need if you are painting on a surface OTHER THAN the soap cover. Increase or reduce according to your needs. 1. If you are painting on the wooden soap cover, base coat the surface with Traditional Burnt Umber. The second base coat color will be done in class creating a simple weathered antique look with minimum effort. 2. If you select a flat round surface like a plate, you will have to achieve the antique look with floating and antiquing, you can skip the Traditional Burnt Umber coat and basecoat the piece with either Shale Green or Celery Green. 3. If you are painting on tin.see #2 4. If you are painting on slate, wash and dry the slate...spray with matte spray. Depending on the size of the slate, you can either paint the background with Shale or Celery Green or you can transfer the pineapple or pear directly on the slate.
