3 INTRODUCTION Through the years there have been many ways the hobby of collecting patches has catalogued Order of the Arrow patches. The Blue Book system emerged as the generally accepted way of designating patches for cataloging purposes. In 1996 the first edition of the Blue Book was issued as a tool for collectors to manage and track individual lodge collections. Several issues of the Blue Book were issued up until The 2004 edition of the Blue Book was issued in a two-volume set due to the size and data contained. As more lodges were being merged and new ones being created the extensive data being gathered on each OA lodge made the printing of a book unmanageable and thus fell out of date. The Scout Patch Auction LLC and the International Scouting Collectors Association (ISCA) teamed up in 2015 to revive the Blue Book system and develop an updated extensive system to manage each lodge s data. Due to many changes in manufacturing styles of patches and lodge insignia issues it became necessary for a new cataloging system. In the fall of 2018 after many hours of debate and collaboration the new cataloging system now named OA Insignia Guide (OAIG) was rolled out for local lodge editors to begin the process of re-cataloging each individual lodge s issues. The OAIG changed and further defined ways to designate each insignia issued by a lodge which could result in lodge s having to re-designate under new guides their perspective Lodge issues. This cannot be done without controversy. On September 14, 2018 collectors from Nisqually Lodge that spanned the 1990 s to present gathered at Camp Thunderbird to debate and determine the designation under the OAIG system of each of Nisqually s memorabilia issues. This book is a product of their work and is the best attempt at honoring the Lodge s past and cataloging the past under the new system. This book of Nisqually Memorabilia is designed to be a two-part system. The first part of the book is a simple layout of the insignia, with limited details, that the Lodge has issued over the years. The new OAIG system has been used to designate the patch issue and its order. The second part of the book is a more detailed listing of the insignia using the OAIG system to give more detailed information that can be used to help identify the item. Contributors: Brian Ankenman, Kevin Rudesill, David Stock, Phillip Misner, Gene Victor, Ron Francis Please provide any feedback or more information to bankenman@hotmail.com Special Thanks to Chris Graves and the Historical team of Tsisqan Lodge 253 for the inspiration and templates to record the Nisqually History through its Memorabilia! 2
4 Issue designation definitions: All OA insignia is identified by a letter and a number. The primary letter is a capital letter or letters and represents the basic issue type. These letters refer to the shape of the patch, material of the issue, or where the insignia is worn. Special category letters are written in lowercase letter. Some special category letters refer to Chapter and or event issues. There is a small exception to this rule in that there are a few special issue categories that are noted by having another capital letter preceding the primary identifier letter. A lower-case letter that follows a number in the issue designator denotes a variety within that numbered issue. The letter will always be designated in lower case. Under the new OAIG system a dash is added to the issue designation in order for the reader to know that it is being designated under the new system. Previous issue designations did not have a dash between letters and numbers. So, the first flap issue of a lodge would look like this: S-1. A chapter first flap issue would be designated as cs-1. An event patch would be designated as ex Below is a complete list of issue designators and definitions: A: Arrowhead Shaped F: Flap Shaped patch not fully embroidered P: Pie or triangular shaped patch R: Round shaped generally less than 5-6 inches in diameter S: Solid (fully) embroidered flap-shape X: Patches of any other shape J: Jacket patch generally over 6 inches in diameter N: Neckerchief Special Categories c: Chapter Issue e: Event patch with year of event k: Known NOT to be directly issued by the OA Q: Lodge rejected. U: Unknown Y: Special Circumstances, usually less than 20 issued. Z: Fake 3
5 Legend of the Nisqually Raven Many Moons AGO three roamed and served the lands surrounding the great body of water now called Puget Sound. To the North was Tahoma, The strong Bear, Tillicum, the mighty Thunderbird, came from the South, and to the West lived Kcumkum, the endearing Salmon. For many years the three had strong tribes and great leaders. They gave themselves to cheerful service, working hard to serve those around them. Their lands were prosperous, full of happiness. That would end, however, as a great darkness fell upon the lands: all became lost. The people looked to the Chiefs of the three for guidance. The leaders worked very hard to continue their service and spirit, they called upon their memories and they called upon each other. They did not give up to the great darkness. ( ) F1 KCUMKUM LODGE 285 ( ) F1 TAHOMA LODGE 348 ( ) S1 TILLICUM LODGE 392 After twelve changes of the seasons in the darkness, a bright light shown upon the lands. It was a symbol for the three to gather, a conclave for all the people. Kcumkum from the West, Tillicum from the South, and Tahoma from the North gathered at the light, brighter than the rising sun. The people gathered in the trees of the forest; the feathers of the Raven, Nisqually. They became as one: Kcumkum the body of the Raven, Tillicum the tail of the Raven, and Tahoma as its wings. The one is called Nisqually, One Who Serves the Land. It has now been many years since the three gathered, becoming one. Nisqually has filled the land with the incredible bright light of Brotherhood, Cheerfulness and Service. Wimachtendienk, Wingolauchsik, Witahemui. 4
6 Merger Process Representatives from Kcumkum #285, Tahoma #348, and Tillicum #392 Lodges met on Saturday, November 6, 1993 and Sunday, November 21, 1993 to discuss the merger of the three lodges. According to the delegates, all of the issues and concerns were dealt with quickly and it was a relatively painless process. It was decided that the merger would occur during the weekend of the Section W1-B Conclave held April 22-24, 1994 at Camp Fire Mountain. Troy Young s suggestion of Nisqually for the lodge name was selected over the original proposed name of Kalai Kallakala, which translates as black raven. The raven was kept as the lodge totem and Young was elected as the first Lodge Chief. 5
