2 Chapter Director s Spiel Well, we re about to start a whole new year, wow, how fast time seems to fly by (I understand it is somehow related to age, however that works?????). We hope you had a wonderful Christmas, filled with Love and Joy and Happiness, and are looking forward to a great New Year ahead of us. Speaking of the new year, fairly soon we will arrange for a get-together, most probably at the Lenoir City Shoney s one evening soon in the new year, for a fun dinner together followed by our ride planning for We hope as many of you as possible can join us and bring your ideas of rides and events you would like to see planned for this year. As I ve said before, this is YOUR chapter and we want to plan the types of things that YOU want to participate in. The more members that participate, the more fun we all can have, together. As soon as I have a date nailed down, I will put out an with the details, so watch for it. We will do the same as we have the last couple years, sit around and make suggestions for rides, which I will write down, and we ll separate them into categories, day rides, weekend rides, and extended/multiple day rides. Then I will send out the complete list and ask each of you to give a ranking number for each ride, in each separate category, the one you would like most to attend, at number 1, the next one at number 2, etc. From that we will set up the final list of rides to put on the calendar, then I ll try to get many of you together again to work out specific dates in the calendar to put those rides on. We really hope we can get something set up that will entice many of you to join on a ride. It is our goal to make this chapter as enjoyable as possible for as many of you as possible, we are supposed to be having FUN, and as a motorcycle organization, a large aspect of having that fun is, hopefully, of course, riding, so let s see about getting some great rides lined up for next year. We need your help to accomplish this. If there is anything currently being done in the chapter that you have questions about, please feel free to contact any of the officers, and if you have an idea of something you think might be fun to do that the other members might enjoy, please bring that to our attention. Let s plan on having a great year doing things together, and having fun. We look forward to sharing some time with as many of you as possible. Don t forget, weather changes quickly this time of year, so if you go on a ride, be prepared with the right clothes, for whatever weather you might encounter. If you re planning on going for a ride, make sure you, your gear, and especially your ride, are all at their peak performance level and ready to get out there and have fun. Ride Safe! James Whitener, TN-M Assistant Chapter Director Chapter 2019 Couple of the Year We want to sincerely thank everyone that suggested selecting Loretta and I to represent our chapter as the 2019 Couple of the Year. We pledge to do our best to represent in as positive manner as possible. One thing we will add to our activities list is to do as many visits to other chapters as possible. We will try to put the word out when we are planning a visit, and sincerely invite any of you to join us. It is a fun thing to do and puts our chapter in a positive light to the other chapters when we visit and talk January 2019, Page 2 of 17

3 about things we are doing. We also have several rallies already planned for other GWRRA Districts, and we will proudly display our Couple medallions to show our chapter s support of us. If you have any suggestions of things you might like to see us get involved in, please let us know, we are always open to suggestions, and ideas of fun things to do, along with promoting our chapter. 4 STAR AWARD: WHOOPS AWARD: Chapter Awards & Winners None, we did not have a December Chapter Gathering I m proud to wear my TN-M Shirt! 50 / Chapter M Out Having FUN! Dec 6 th, Lenoir City Christmas Parade Brian Richards We had a good time at the Lenoir City Christmas parade, even if it was very cold. Loretta was having issues with her leg so she decided to stay home, so I rode by myself to the Walmart to meet up with whichever members decided to join us. Mel McInerney arrived, with his grandson as his co-rider, and Russ Wools. So we rode together to the staging area and spent time decorating our bikes for the parade, then waiting around, trying to keep warm, until the parade started. Considering how cold it was, there was a decent sized crowd along the parade route to cheer all of us on. And there was LOTS of candy being tossed to the children (of ALL ages, might I add). As we got to the stage for the city, I clearly heard them announce and here is the Gold Wing Road Riders Association, so we got a plug in, which was neat to hear. Participating in things like these parades is a great way to put our spin on motorcycle riders to the general public, hopefully helping them see us in a more favorable light, we need all the help we can get to improve the image. And it is so much fun to show off our bikes and especially see the little children oohing and ahing over us as we ride by. After the parade, we rode together to the Shoney s on 321 and after a nice dinner, took advantage of their customer appreciation day and each of us got a free Shoney s world-famous hot fudge cake, which was just the thing to finish off a good time. 5 Dec 7 th, Chapter Christmas Party Brian Richards As we ve done the past several years, we met at the Central United Methodist Church, 301 Hickory Creek Rd, Lenoir City, in the white bubble building behind the church. Our sincere thanks to Robert Scott for once again arranging for us to have access to the building for our party. The caterer from Shoney s once again did a great job with the food, from comments I heard, everyone enjoyed the food, and there was plenty, if you went away hungry it was your own fault. Then of course, as we d asked members to bring in a dessert, there were piles of goodies to enjoy after the meal, so many choices, and darn, so little room left in our stomachs for them. Oh well, probably better anyway, as I seriously doubt any of them were zero-calories! As a thank you back to the chapter members, we used chapter funds to pay the majority of the cost of each meal, feeling it is important to pay back to the members. Our chapter has chosen to not try to do any special fund-raising activity, so the funds we need for critical expenses come from the proceeds of the monthly gathering 50/25-25 drawings. After handling the necessary expenses, we determined there was sufficient funds left over to cover most of the cost, and we hope that it met with your approval. After dinner and dessert, we had the awards presentations, the top three mileage awards for the most miles ridden in the year, and the attendance to the chapter s monthly gatherings, an appreciation certificate to George & Vida Maples thanking them for their being the chapter Couple of the Year for 2018, the award for the winners of the chapter s 2018 Chapter Challenge - George & Vida Maples, and the presentation of the chapter s 2019 Couple of the Year - Brian & Loretta Richards, and the 2019 Individual of the Year - Burl McCammon. Below are a few of the special pictures taken, but all the pictures taken can be easily viewed on our chapter s updated website, and just click on the Ride Photos link which will open a PDF file that contains the pictures of all the events throughout 2018, the latest at the top. 7 Dec 11 th, Loudon Christmas Parade Brian Richards Just like the Lenoir City Christmas parade, we set up to meet at the Walmart, and once again, we were joined by Mel and his grandson, and Russ, but this time, Loretta was my co-rider. Once again we had to endure the cold temperatures, thank goodness for heated gear, at least on our part, Mel, his grandson, and Russ were certainly bundled up as well. We rode to the staging area and spent time decorating our bikes for the parade, then waiting around, trying to keep warm, until the parade started. There seemed to be more confusion on lining up for the parade, and the way they did it, even though we got there fairly early and should have been more towards the front of the parade, the way they let everyone out, we were almost at the very end of the very long parade, only a couple ahead of the tailing firetruck, which was blasting out their horns and sirens on a regular basis, boy are they loud. Once again it was surprising to see the size of the crowd on such a cold evening. And again there were lots of children scrambling for the candy being tossed. We were directly behind a car from a chain pizza store, and from the looks of things, he was tossing out a package that looked like it probably had candy in it and possibly a coupon, from the reactions of the recipients. Hopefully many of you might remember how much fun we had, showing off to the public and giving a good impression, and plan on joining us next year. Yes, it was cold, but if you know that ahead of time, it is something that can be prepared for, with layers, special thermal clothes, etc. After the parade, Mel and his grandson left for home (basically right around the corner from where the parade ended), and Russ and Loretta & I rode together into Lenoir City and stopped at a fast food place for a sandwich for dinner.
