Turtle Tracks CD s Hank & Debbie Hemmes Happy Summer to all! We have so much to talk about where do we start. First of all we want to Congratulate Loren and Stella Hodgson for being our 2011 Couple of Year. As you all know Loren was in a motorcycle accident and they were not at the gathering, so we took the cake, flowers and awards to them! Were they surprised. What a great couple they are! May 28th Colette, Kathy and us headed to Chapter C-2 gathering to claim the Michigan Traveling Plague. It was COLD and WET all the way there and back. But was not cold enough for us to stop at Jones in Baldwin for ice cream. And two days later at 87 degrees, we were in the Sheridan Parade. It was a good time for all. The cookout at the Adkins found a lot of good food and a lot of stories being told. Kathy, Mike, Scott (Mike s son) Al, Louie and Debbie was at the Carson City Frontier Days at the Car/Bike Show and sold raffle tickets. We sold around 65, so not a bad day at all. At the June gathering we will be putting the last touches on the Chicken Run that is the following week, so make sure you are all there. We just need to finalize a few things and we are good to go! June is a very busy month for us in G-2 besides all the graduation Open house s. We have all been invited to Buddy s open house and we have included this on page 4. times Lyle and Betty have these listed in their article for Alma and Greenville Walmarts. The Howard City Yard Sales, Debbie sits in Ensley Park which is right in town. Bring a chair and join in the fun. Page 2

On the 24th in Coral, Debbie and Kathy gets there around 6:00 pm at the Car/Bike show. It is a small event, but if we sell one ticket, it is worth the trip. That is $.35 for the chapter and helps out the kids. The Gilmore Car Museum trip is on the 12th. This will be a fun time if you like old motorcycles and old cars. We want to leave early in the morning. We are planning to meet at the corner of M66 and M57 at 7:30 in the morning. We will then be stopping in Woodbury at the gas station, to pick up one of Hank s ski buddies so he can join us. It cost $9.00 to get in which gets you in all the buildings. You can bring a brown bag lunch if you like or there is vendors to buy food for lunch. We are sure there will be a ice cream stop along the way. The weekend of June 24th is BUSY!!! We have some members that will be taking the ERC course in Ionia either on Saturday or Sunday. We also have received a ransom note for our mascot Red Rock. Chapter J-2 has him and to get him back, a few members need to attend their fundraiser, Time Endurance Ride. This is on June 25th. Registration is at 9:00 am, and first bike out at 11:00 am. The cost is $15.00 a person. The flyer states lunch on the road, not sure if you bring a brown bag or if you stop at a restaurant, so hopefully I will have answers at the gathering. Debbie will be out of town that Saturday and not sure on what day Hank is scheduled for the ERC course, so we need to know if anybody can go retrieve our mascot. Looking ahead to July 3rd, we have Lyles ride to Battle Creek to see the Blue Angels. He will have information on the time he wants to leave and what he has planned for the day hopefully at the gathering. Michigan Rally is coming up. Hopefully you have your registration in and are prepared for a good time. Let s hope for good weather this year! CONGRADULATIONS 2011 MI G-2 COUPLE OF THE YEAR Loren and Stella Hodgson Page 3

HONDA HAPPENINGS Assistant Chapter Directors Lyle and Betty Shinabarger Hello Friends April showers brought on May morels and menacing mosquitos. With all the rain its hard to get much riding in, but we have lots of good days ahead. While riding we all need to be especially alert for deer no one knows this better than some of our own chapter members and recently it was Loren which we hope is still recovering well. Lyle has added a few more miles on his bike along with some of our chapter members on May 20th when they rode to Traverse City on the Chris Chrome event. Just when I thought it was impossible to find any more room to put any more chrome and L.E.D. lights on his bike-he did it.(there goes the money for my next year's Mother's day!) Once again the deadline for selling raffle tickets is fast approaching. We have June 5th 10th and 12th as dates set up for Alma Walmart and June 14th and 15th at Greenville Walmart. The times are from 1:00-5:00 pm. June 4th in Frontier days in Carson approx. 11:00am (call Debbie on her cell to find where she will be sitting) and the 17th yard sales in Howard City from 8:00 an till 5 pm, anyone interested in helping out to sell tickets at these or any other events please get in touch with us. Phone numbers: Lyle's cell or Betty's cell Just winging it, Lyle & Betty Page 5

RIDER ED Rider Educators Allen and Nancy Pierson TOPIC: Warm Weather Worries RIDER ED GIMME 5 Motorcycle riding is an activity that takes all of us outdoors. For many of us, the riding season is comprised of summer with some spring and some fall periods. For others, the best riding times are during the spring and fall seasons due to excessive heat in the summer months. For all of us, we are likely to be riding in hot weather at least some part of the year. Since too much heat can cause severe medical emergencies, it is important to know how to avoid becoming a victim of the heat. So how do we avoid heat stress, or more severe conditions like hyperthermia, to remain safe? Let s review some warm weather riding tips. First, make sure you have gear appropriate for the weather. Consider what you will wear to cover your arms while riding in direct sunlight during daylight hours (if you are lucky enough to avoid the rain). If you have it, a mesh jacket provides unparalleled ventilation and abrasion resistance. A denim shirt is another alternative that is fairly light weight and offers better protection than t-shirt material. Protection is important, but keep in mind that when you are comfortable, you are able to focus on the act of riding. Denim is a common choice for long pants, but you might want to think about purchasing motorcycle-specific riding pants for extra protection. Gloves are the other area where the ambient temperature is usually factored into the decision of what to wear. Perforated leather gloves will breathe better than solid leather. Another good choice would be mesh gloves which, like the jackets made of similar material, provide great ventilation coupled with superior abrasion resistance. They are worth considering. Consider carrying a water absorbing collar that you can soak in water and wear around your neck to help keep you cool. Or be prepared to soak and wear your shirt or t-shirt at a rest stop in the hottest weather. Page 6

Second, plan to maintain your hydration level. Every time you stop for gas or a rest break in hot weather, take time to drink enough fluids to replace what you lose through perspiration. This should be at least eight ounces per hour during the heat of the day. You may think that your clothes are not holding an entire cup of sweat that you could wring out of them. And that is probably true. While you are riding, some of your perspiration is soaked up by your clothes and is carried away by the air flowing around you. And some moisture evaporates directly from your skin. It must all be replaced to keep your system hydrated. A simple way to determine if you are getting enough fluids is to monitor your output at rest stops. In short, if you are drinking frequently but don t have to go at each rest stop, then you probably are not drinking enough. Modify this as necessary for your own situation. Carry a bottle of water to drink from whenever you need it. Be sure to refill it at rest stops. Third, remain aware of your own physical condition. Exposure to too much heat for too long can result in hyperthermia. This is the condition where your body cannot properly regulate your internal temperature and your temperature rises uncontrollably. If allowed to reach this state, it is a medical emergency requiring immediate medical attention. The key is to prevent your body from reaching this condition. Watch for symptoms like the absence of sweat in hot weather. This could mean your body has lost too much water and cannot produce any more sweat, the principal means of temperature regulation. Without the ability to sweat, the core temperature of the body will rise quickly. Other early warning symptoms include confusion, headache, dizziness, redness of the skin, often most noticeable on the face. If you notice any of these symptoms in yourself or those riding with you, find the nearest place to sit down, drink lots of water, and relax in the shade or an air conditioned space. Remove gear and loosen clothing to allow the body to cool itself. Increase the frequency of breaks during the hottest part of the day. And definitely get out the water absorbing collar or soak your shirt at this time. It will help bring your body temperature back down. With the right gear and travel plans that include frequent breaks with plenty of water, you can enjoy riding safely even in the hottest weather. Ride Smart & Be Safe!
