Monthly Gatherings Join us at our next monthly gathering at the UAW Hall in Adrian! The hall is located at: 1360 W. Beecher Street Adrian, MI (M-34 at the US-223 overpass) Our Monthly Gathering is held the 2nd Sunday of the Month at 8:00am with a social time starting at 7:30am. We will have coffee pot on and the doughnuts ready. Come and enjoy the camaraderie of your fellow GWRRA Members and our Chapter W Family! Our next Gathering is April 13th Hope to see you there! Gold Wing Road Riders Association Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge! We are going to skip spring and go right into summer before we know it! Jim Morrison shared this picture on the Chapter W face book page of his 1500 plastic parts laid out on a table while his bike was getting the preseason attention that we all need to take care of. GO Jim! Makes me want to do the same. I know I m ready for it! I invite any of you to share pictures on the Chapter face book page - we need them for the newsletter and brag book! Also if you have a story to tell please feel free to share it we want to include things like that in our chapter newsletter and or the District newsletter which will now be published monthly! We had a great time at Wingless Weekend as we took part in many of the seminars and FUN with the wheel chair races. They had a course set up in the ball room with cones - much like the amazing team challenge. The person in the wheel chair had to tell the person pushing them which way to go! The person pushing was blindfolded. The other thing that added to the fun was there were two wheel chairs on the course going in opposite directions. So you had oncoming traffic somewhere in the middle of the course. It was FUN to watch and participate in. Patti & I were honored on Saturday Night after dinner with a certificate and patches! We are now Senior Chapter Directors. You can t become Senior Chapter Directors with out the great members in your chapter so thanks to all of you for what you do! At the officer meeting on Sunday Patti & I were installed as Michigan District Trainers. I m sure we will have fun working with all the officers, trainers and members of Michigan to continue the great training programs that GWRRA has to offer. One of my goals is to bring more training in general to the chapter level. So as we become more involved in this we will be stepping down as chapter directors at some point in the near future. We ve had a great time as CDs and it is all because of YOU our Chapter W Family. We would like to see our ACD Tanya White with an ACD lined up as she takes over the Chapter Director position. So if she asks you about it - please consider stepping up to this volunteer position that will keep Chapter W moving into the future. Don t let the idea of been there done that get in YOUR way! When we were installed we were told it would be very rewarding and you all have made it just that! Because YOU ALL are our Friends for Fun Safety and Knowledge! Remember to check the calendar and ride schedule in this newsletter and online for the most up to date information! We have a fun filled riding season ahead of us so let s make the best of it! 2 Tanya White Love these new Toy Run Shirts. Have you gotten yours yet? Craig and I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who is involved with Chapter W. Without the group participation we have we would not be so much fun. We enjoy riding with all of you and hope to continue to ride with all. I am looking forward to being Chapter Director, but do need some volunteers to step up and take on some of the stuff that happens in our organization. I am looking for someone to step up and become ACD. If you would be interested in doing it that would be wonderful. As a Chapter we always get the job done, but we also watch out for each other in all aspects of the Chapter. So if you are interested in ACD, Newsletter editor, Dinner Ride Coordinator, or fun fairy, please step up and take on that spot. I do know I cannot do it all, and will need the help of all of you to move us forward. Scott and I have got the date set for the Chapter W Toy Run, it will be on Sept. 14, at Dexter's again. Anyone wanting to help with it please let us know. Since there is a ride going on the day before to the Region Rally, we will be doing the trial run the Saturday before, so everyone can ride that wants to. We will also do a ride the Saturday of to check the road, but that will only involve a few of us. More details to follow. It was great to catch up with old friends at Wingless Weekend. Ron and Val look great and are enjoying retirement. Larry and Audrey are doing great. Our table decoration did not win a prize but was very cute. Thanks to Susie for making it. Ken and Patti were given an award for Sr. Chapter Directors. Thanks for all you have done for us in the past few years. You have done a great job and have not been thanked near enough for all you have done. We all would like to say THANKS! We had a great time at Wing- less and would like to have seen more of us there. It was a good time and Kim and Sandy did a great job of keeping the cost down. Craig and I are looking forward to going again next year. Keep it in mind as something to do to get out of the area. Although it did snow traveling wasn t to bad, as we went up early enough to miss both of the snows that happened that weekend. As we look at riding sea- son getting closer, I know I am getting ready to ride again, I am looking forward to riding with all of you. My Silverwing is getting a new CB radio, so I will be able to hear all you are saying this season. It is very strange to get back from a ride and everyone behind you has left and you didn t get to say good night. So be prepared to ride along with the Chapter. 3 Fred Probst RIDER ED GIMME 5 The Many Levels of Safety in GWRRA The seasoned GWRRA Member knows about the many safety-oriented courses available through Rider Education. Riding courses teach, or reinforce/reawaken, critical skills that have been shown to be noticeably absent in accident victims. But if you haven t been trained, you won t know what you re missing that could make a difference in survival or in reducing injury. And perhaps not well known is the fact that skills begin to diminish in mere weeks of non-use. That s why it seems like you keep learning something new even when you take the same course every two to three years! In GWRRA, we also teach CPR/First Aid/AED. Fortunately, many of you have taken advantage of this opportunity, and the good news is that you can practice these lifesaving skills on someone outside of GWRRA as well! You can even use the medical training to tend to your own wounds. For instance, a member recently thanked an instructor because, shortly after taking a course, he was able to attend to his own wound after he accidentally shot himself in the leg. He3 had his wife call 911 while he used compression to stop the bleeding and properly dress the wound. By the time the EMTs arrived, all was under control and they were asking where he had received the training that resulted in his doing such a great job of controlling the bleeding and wrapping the injury; they didn t need to do anything but monitor and transport him. The ER doctor had similar positive remarks about his bandaging. And though there s no way to perform CPR on yourself, it is also an invaluable safety tool. (Plus, since you can t perform i8t on yourself, there s no merit to the argument that people take the courses only for themselves...or simply for the patches they can qualify for in the world-renowned GWRRA Levels Program). But this topic does bring us to the best reason for earning the Level patches and proudly wearing them. After all, how else would someone be able to tell what training a GWRRA Member has had and if he or she can render assistance in an emergency? In GWRRA, the Levels Program is simple: People who ve made a commitment to ride safe wear a Level 1 patch and safe miles pins to show how many miles they ve gone without an accident since joining GWRRA. And we can recognize those who ve had riding training (or, for co-riders, training to assist the rider) by seeing a Level 2 triangular patch on the Member s vest. A Level 3 rectangular patch tells you that they have also added either CP{R or First Aid (or both) to their skills. It also tells you they carry a first aid kit on their bike/trike. A Level 4 patch indicates they have both CPR and First Aid training, with the added experience of at least 25,000 safe miles plus all the previous level requirements. Lastly, in GWRRA we do something that all governments, and most other motorcycle training providers, envy recertification of training requirements for a large percentage of our Levels Program participants. Our volunteer Rider Educators, Instructors and GWRTRA University Trainers certified in Rider Ed make it all happen by making training available usually at low cost or free. So rest assured you can ride a little more comfortably knowing the folks in your riding group are successful graduates of a riding course and/or the Levels Program. What level are you?
