2 Idaho Fish & Wildlife Foundation 2009 Winning Bidders Share Their Memories 2009 Hagerman duck hunt provides chance for dad and son to Be Outside together! The Hagerman duck hunting trip won by Jesse Ferrer, was more than a hunting excursion. It was a chance for him to share a magical time together out in nature with his 11-year-old son Spencer. Photo credit Jessee Ferre The father and son have duck hunted together many times before, but Jesse said this trip was different. Usually hunting is all about the hunt. This trip was really all about Spencer and making sure he had fun. When Jesse asked his son what the most memorable part of the hunt was, Spencer replied, Sitting there before shooting hour watching all the ducks pile in! 2009 Buy Now bidder trip Two minutes after the 2009 IFWF Online Trip Auction opened for bidding, Janine Townsend placed a Buy Now bid and ended up a winner of Horseback Fish Stocking trip. Janine and her sister assisted an Idaho Department of Fish & Game biologist and learned how to put the fish in plastic bags, pack them on a mule for transport and release them into the lake. We released about 1,500 young trout into the lake and watched them move along the banks, and then swim out into the deeper water, Janine said. It was just what I had hoped for. I just wish it didn t have to end. Photo credit Janine Townsend Dad and son enjoyed fly-fishing and fish stocking trips Photo credit Trent Koritansky Dick Koritansky has participated in the online trip auction for years and has won a variety of great adventures. This year, he won numerous trips and was joined by his 15-year-old son Trent. I took my youngest son who is into wildlife photography and it was a great experience for him, said Dick. I don t think he would be nearly as interested in the outdoors or photography as he is if it weren t for the trips. Nature doesn t lie. If you go out into it, smell it, feel it, sense it, that s how you learn to enjoy it. Dick said, I m really interested in nature and outdoor activities, and the work of the Idaho Department of Fish & Game. The Idaho Fish and Wildlife Foundation is a great thing to support. I have a hard time picking the trips, but I can t wait until the next one. FEBRUARY
3 Idaho Fish & Wildlife Foundation Photo credit Rick Milliron Lucky bidder wins four incredible trips in 2009 auction Rick Milliron was lucky enough to win four trips that were just incredible, he said. His adventures included radio collaring both Ruffed Grouse and elk calves, counting wolf pups and electrofishing trout. Each trip took him to a different part of Idaho. 4 Idaho Fish & Wildlife Foundation INTERVIEW WITH JOAN YOST Idaho Fish and Wildlife Foundation Board Member What is your favorite thing to do outdoors? Fly fishing, bird watching, rafting, canoeing, hiking, skiing. Do you have a place (town, ranch, b&b, river, lake, mountain, lodge) in Idaho where you like to go? McCall, the South Fork of the Snake River, Henry s Fork and Harriman Ranch. If you were talking to someone who had never been to Idaho, what would you tell them about Idaho? Photo credit Shelley Jackson I d say that seeing is believing! Idaho s wild rivers, majestic mountains and huge forests are so unique and incredibly beautiful. We have world class fly fishing, rafting, hunting, our high mountains and deserts offer exceptional bird watching opportunities and there are no crowds. How did you get involved with the Idaho Fish and Wildlife Foundation? Can you tell us a little about yourself? I was born in McCall where I lived until I was 14. My grandparents had settled there in the early 1900s. I moved to Arizona during high school and went to college at the University of Arizona where I earned a Bachelors of Science degree. I lived and worked in California and Oregon before moving to Idaho where I worked in private business. In 1990 I joined Idaho Public Television as Director of Membership and retired in How do you enjoy the wildlife of Idaho? Now that I m retired I do a lot of volunteer work. I have eight grandchildren that keep me busy. Idaho is the perfect place for me, it s grown but has retained its character and charm. I love the four seasons and the diversity of wildlife and habitat as well as the expanding cultural life that comes with growth. My husband Bud and I love fly fishing and bird watching. What is your fondest memory, experience of Idaho s great? One of my fondest memories is a fishing trip on the South Fork of the Snake River. We were fishing with moose and eagles. When we stopped for lunch a Golden Eagle dove into the water right in front of us, caught a fish and ate it on a nearby rock. He was so close and he didn t seem to mind us being there. My husband and I had the privilege of winning a Foundation auction trip to the Camas Prairie Centennial Marsh for bird watching and later we visited the Fort Boise Wildlife Management Area to observe the snow geese. After these trips I became more aware of the mission of the Foundation and thought more people needed to know about its work. The Foundation is committed to conservation, education and to encouraging all to experience Idaho s wildlife. So, when this position became open, I volunteered. Do you have a favorite Foundation project? The online trip auction because it offers so many unique opportunities for people to experience Idaho. Also, the MK Nature Center, which was the Foundation s first project in The Center celebrates their 20 th anniversary in 2010, as does the Foundation. What do you envision for the Foundation? More visibility. The work the foundation does is so important; however most of it is behind the scenes. I d like to see an increase in education endeavors as we continue to help protect and preserve our natural heritage. I hope to help their good work become better known throughout the state. My goal is to help facilitate wider recognition of the Foundation in Idaho and beyond! FEBRUARY
