2 EJ NEWS! May 2018 EAST JUNIATA NEWS Go Tigers! Three EJ FFA members Represent at States East Juniata FFA is proud to have 3 of its members represent us at the state level in three different events. Alex Lower (middle) has been selected as a Pennsylvania Wildlife Ambassador. In this highly competitive process, Alex distinguished himself with his wildlife p h o t o g r a p h y S A E ( S u p e r v i s e d Agricultural Experience) Project where he and his brother have created CPA EJ FFA Threepeat Winners of Juniata County Envirothon!!! East Juniata FFA is also proud to announce the only three-time consecutive winning team of Jacob Kinzer, Jon Nace, Adam Finkbiner, Jared Heister, and Garrett Gabel in Juniata County Envirothon History. Jon Nace replaced a graduating senior, however, t h e r e m a i n i n g t e a m members now are on their way to compete at the State Envirothon representing Juniata County for the third consecutive year. Never in this competition has a team been so dominant. Now, they need to prepare for a v e r y d i f fi c u l t s t a t e competition held at Susquehanna University and Camp Mount Luther. Good Luck!!! Key Club/Builders Club Outdoors - a wildlife video company that posts videos online. This is great honor, and Alex is the first Juniata County resident to ever win such an honor. Upon Completion, he will be a State Ambassador specializing in research for the Wild Turkey. Kenny Beatty and Ethan Jamison (Pictured 1st and 3rd) both won Regional Events and will be competing at Pennsylvania FFA Week. Kenny won the Safe Tractor D r i v i n g a t H u n t i n g d o n C o u n t y Fairgrounds in the Fall, and will compete in June for the state title. Ethan just recently won first in Extemporaneous Speech at South Central Regionals. Ethan will also represent EJ FFA at PA FFA Week. This is all three student s first trip to the winners circle with a chance to do us all proud!! Our student body was struck by the news that Megan Hart, an EJHS alumni was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Megan became a Four Diamonds child. Due to this unfortunate news, we called our Mini-THON, #hartstrong. We were even fortunate enough to speak to Megan via facetime that evening. What a pleasant surprise for all! We even got to dance with her to her favorite song, Fight Song by Rachel Platten. After learning about Megan, we continued to unite as a district to sell #hartstrong t- shirts and sponsor a district wide dress down day. We would also like to thank the community for playing a big part in this event. Local businesses and organizations were kind enough to donate items for our event which was held on April 13, Our Kiwanis liaison, Richard Burkholder was in attendance that evening as well. We will reveal our total amount raised to be be donated to The Four Diamonds through the Penn State Medical Center on May 12, 2018 at EJHS May Day. Please come out to East Juniata s Got Talent, which is the May Day theme this year, on May 12, at 7:00 at the East Juniata High School auditorium. Tickets are available at the door for $6. In January our chapter of Key Club was reactivated and we are in the process are establishing a Builders Club for junior high members. We have raised close to $100 for Autism Awareness through a hat day. Also we are going to be serving at a spaghetti dinner to help fund missions to the Native American Reservations. Later in May we will support the Kiwanis at the Festival in the Park. We also hope to volunteer at Pets Come First with walking rescue dogs. Our goals and missions as a Key Club and Builders Club is to help and assist the community in as many ways. Ej NEWS!

3 EJ NEWS! May 2018 Penpals of the Future Several sophomores have been experimenting with different penpals for the past 4 years in Mrs. Hund s ELA classes. Four years ago, the students met others from Mexico; the past 2 years, students have been writing to elementary comrades at Fayette; and this year, the students have been talking with sixth graders from Bakersfield, CA. The program has been a success overall, with the students using old school methods to stay in touch by writing snail mail, as well as using technology like GoogleMaps, GoogleEarth, Skype, and creating shared documents. Between the students on either side of the country, there have been several interactions, and it has been a positive learning experience for everyone. Students involved in this activity from fourth period have stated the following: Writing to a pen-pal across the country has been a surreal experience. I look forward to writing & receiving letters. It s been fun to learn about children across the country. MiKaylee Leister It s really cool to interact with other kids that come from many different backgrounds and from different places. Caitlynn Dillman My penpal is like a mini version of me, and it is adorable. anonymous Writing [to] penpals helps us understand others lifestyles in other parts of the world. Ian Bassler The experience of writing to a penpal is intriguing; you get to talk to new people and learn how different their lives are compared to your own. Clarye Guyer Mrs. Hund is planning to continue this adventure and would like to meet up with even more students from other areas around the world. Ej NEWS!

Are you the type of person that enjoys hands-on learning and doing different things? Do you like physical activities? If so, a career in the construction trades field may be for you. It is a good time to get involved in the construction industry because a large percentage of the existing w o r k l a b o r f o r c e i s reaching retirement and the increase of infrastructure development p r o j e c t s a r o u n d t h e country. This results in a high demand for young, trained workers to fill the void. The Pennsylvania Department of Education recognizes there is a labor shortage and placed the Construction Trades class i n t o a h i g h p r i o r i t y occupation because there are not enough skilled workers entering the field. The Construction/Building Trades program at Juniata High School gives students t h e o p p o r t u n i t y t o experience the trade profession a n d p o s s i b l y help them determine w h i c h individual trade suits them best. Students in the program receive basic training in c a r p e n t r y, e l e c t r i c, masonry and plumbing. To do this the course consists of classroom and shop training. In each area we cover safety, blueprinting reading, estimating, tools, materials, codes and basic skills needed. The program covers basics in carpentry, masonry, wiring, and plumbing. The carpentry section covers f r a m i n g, i n t e r i o r a n d exterior finishes, roofing, cabinets and the use of shop equipment. While learning masonry skills needed to lay block and brick we cover mortar, concrete, scaffolding and using transits and lasers. The electric program gives students experience in

In plumbing students get to solder and learn industry terms and methods. Students also take the Career/Safe 10hr. OSHA certification course. To help gain experience Trades students have completed many projects including the six-bay garage at Fermanagh, storage buildings and restroom on the football field, the large J on the hill facing town, boys and girls dugouts, the entire Trades shop, many sheds and gazebos and numerous smaller projects. There is so much more to construction than simply using basic hand tools. To be successful in construction it requires a lot of physical skills and an understanding of how projects are completed. Today s workers should have math, measurement and conversion knowledge, be able to work independently and c o o p e r a t e w i t h o t h e r workers, to follow oral and written directions and have a good work ethic. A recently released survey by the Associated General Contractors of America revealed that nearly 80 percent of contractors are having a hard time finding qualified, skilled laborers. wp-content/uploads/ 2015/11/2015_Workforce_ Survey_National.pdf? x64028 Everywhere you look there are buildings, roads, sidewalks etc. built or being built by construction workers. Many of the workers that helped with those projects are proud of their accomplishments that may be there for many generations to see. 10 EAST JUNIATA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL FAYETTE MONROE THOMPSONTOWN PMEA Festival Hosted at EJHS Friday, April 27, 2018 was an exciting, musical day at East Juniata High School. The high school served as the host location for the PMEA District 4 Sixth Grade Band Fest. Brent D. Snyder, music educator at Monroe and Thompsontown-Delaware Elementary Schools, served as the host director for this event. 146 sixth grade students were accompanied by 25 band directors from Centre, Clearfield, Clinton, Fulton, Huntingdon, Juniata, and Mifflin Counties. Mr. Snyder chose Dr. William Stowman, Chair of the Music Department and Director of Instrumental Studies at Messiah College, as the guest conductor. During the course of the day, students practiced for about 4.5 hours as they prepared for a concert that night. The students were given a musical treat, listening to a one-hour performance by the East Juniata High School Jazz Combo in the afternoon. That evening was topped off by a public concert. Approximately 600 people enjoyed the five musical selections performed by the band, including Liturgical Fanfare, Rising Star, A Prehistoric Suite, Sakura, and Li l Liza Jane. PB & J Go to School In second grade we experienced the thrill of publishing our first book PB & J Go to School. Each student wrote a one-page story about Peanut Butter and Jelly as his or her side-kick. They were not given any parameters regarding the story elements and went wild with the plots, character behaviors (imagine 2nd grade humor), and illustrations. We had Peanut Butter and Jelly horseback riders, artists, and some great life lessons. One was about a cat who befriended a PB & J and together they roamed the world helping lost PB & Js find their way back home. An Uncrustable turned rock star, a race car driver, a PB & J with rocket boots, and more! They worked diligently through the formation of ideas, pre-writings, drafts, rewrites, and illustrations. A very special Thank You to Mrs. Shepler, our art teacher, for helping to guide our illustrations. It was absolute joy to see excitement on students faces when they saw the printed book. We celebrated by inviting parents and friends to a book signing where parents took their purchased copies to the stage for students to sign. It was a great experience and great to see potential professional authors! In their own words I am proud of myself! It was a lot of writing. I was really happy and surprised my mom and dad when I saw them at the book signing. Riley It was really amazing because we became published authors and something I might want to do the rest of my life. Meyer I liked that people thought our book was funny when they read the stories. I want to write another book. Liberty Conclusively they agree: It was a great time to celebrate that we wrote a book and that we can spread the joy and share our book. Brook Trout Release On April 24, 2018, Thompsontown-Delaware Elementary School held their annual Trout Release Day at the AmVets along the Delaware Creek. With aid from the Penns Creek Trout Unlimited and the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, the school ended their seventh year of the Trout in the Classroom program. Throughout the school year, the fifth and sixth grade students participated in numerous activities to enhance their knowledge of our state fish: its life cycle from egg to fingerling, care, feeding, and maintenance through chemical testing of nitrates, nitrites, ammonia, ph levels, and temperature. In early November, 278 trout eggs were welcomed into the aquarium. Students provided the necessities of clean water, cold water, oxygen, food, and shelter. Soon, the eggs hatched into the alevin stage. Due to issues out of the control of the students, all of the trout died when they moved into the fry stage. Despite losing all fish, the students continued to learn about the Brook Trout s natural habitat and the importance in our local streams. They looked forward to their Trout Release Day planned by the Home and School organization. Presenters from Trout Unlimited and other agencies provided a memorable release day for students. Lost Creek Trout Club delivered 100 adult trout for the students to place into the creek. A macro-invertebrate stream study and casting lessons were given by Mr. Larry Winey, Penns Creek Trout Unlimited representative. Presentations and demonstrations occurred throughout the day from Shade Mountain National Wild Turkey Federation, Penn State Extension Office s Environmental and Wildlife Sciences, and Juniata County 4H Clubs (composting and seeing eye puppy). Thompsontown AmVets offered their facilities along with a delicious lunch. Students returned to the school with wet clothes and lasting memories. Thompsontown-Delaware students and staff would like to thank everyone for their support and contributions to our Trout in the Classroom program. Thompsontown-Delaware Elementary School's participation in the Trout in the Classroom (TIC) program was made possible by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, Pennsylvania Council of Trout Unlimited and Pennsylvania Department of Education environment and ecology. This partnership provides funding, workshops, Brook Trout eggs and food, as well as curriculum and technical support for all registered TIC classrooms. Left: K Nex participants Josef Book, Kolten Martin, Trent Robinson, and Ben Petrovic from Fayette Right: Mrs. Brought s 2nd grade authors of PB & J Go to School On March 23, four sixth graders from Fayette Elementary School competed in the 2018 K nex Challenge at TIU teams competed this year. The students from Fayette created Ping Pong 2.0: an updated version of the original Ping Pong game. The group got great feedback from the judges and other participating groups and won the Children s Choice Award for Most Entertaining. May, 2018 Nancy Kramer, Principal

11 Fermanagh * Mountain View * Walker May 2018 JUNIATA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Band & Chorus Students Busy Preparing For Concert The band and chorus students from all five elementary schools on the west side of the county will be combining together to have their annual spring concert at JHS on May 9 at 7PM. The students have been working hard and practicing during school and after school to make this combined effort a success! There will be a rehearsal at JHS the day before the program, May 8 from 9am to 2:15. The students are excited to miss a day of their traditional school work to do another kind of work - Rehearsing and Making Music! The concert will feature the full chorus, the full band, and some small ensemble performances as well. There will be over 100 students participating in this exciting event. Please come to support our students and the music program on May 9 at 7pm in the auditorium of Juniata High School! Submitted by Rebecca Trego. Fermanagh Safety Patrol STEM/STEAM Grant Our student safety patrol continues to provide assistance to students walking to and from school. They were able to attend the Shrine Circus to celebrate their hard work! Christie Holderman, Principal M r s. S h i r l e y S c h l e g e l presented Travis Quici with his grant from the Retired Teachers Association. The focus of STEM/ S T E A M education is to teach Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics all together instead of individually. By using real world projects and assignments that allow the students to discover and learn, they are making the connections that they need to be successful and have their work meaningful. The students will expand and then use their knowledge of coding to program Edison Robots to perform specific given tasks, such as to complete an obstacle course. They will have to use visual coding on a free downloaded app on their ipads in order to control the Edison bots.
