Vice District Governor Lion Bokkie & Marie Oberholzer For those who do not know me let me take this opportunity to enlighten you. My name is Bokkie Oberholzer and I was born in Johannesburg 6 June In 1959 we emigrated to the then Rhodesia where I completed my schooling and regrettably did not study further. I worked for a year before being conscripted into the army (compulsory) for 9 months. It was during this period that I met Marie my wife to be and eventually got married on 31 st March In 1975 Marie and I decided to immigrate back to SA and I took up a position in the Logistics Department of Volkswagen of SA. On January 14 th 1976 we were blessed with Deon our first born, and two years later, January 20 th 1978 we were once again blessed with our daughter Kim. Subsequently we have been blessed with four beautiful grandchildren. After 37 years of service I retired from VWSA in July 2012 and was fortunate to be offered a light weight position with Uti a Logistics Transport company to keep me occupied in my ageing years. Lionistic Career Inducted as a lion in the Uitenhage Club in October of 1991 by then President Bertie Slack. In the years following my induction I have held various portfolio s in the club namely, Projects chairman, Fundraising Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, Clubhouse Chairman, Lion Tamer, Tailtwister, Club president for two terms and have been a board member of our club since I was instrumental in taking over the Lion Motorcycle Rally from St Croix Lions Club and have been Chairman of our Lion Rally Committee for the past ten years. 100% attendance since joining Lions, 100% Presidents award and was awarded Melvin Jones Fellow by my club in After 23 years as a Lion I remain committed to our motto of We Serve I have also served on the 410D cabinet in various positions for 15 years and was elected as 2 nd VDG in 2013 and hopefully together we can turn our member losses into member gains in the coming years.

PPC News Flash No. 3 Peace, Love and Understanding. Sorry about the long gap between News Flashes. Libby and I are just getting back into the swing of things after a five week camping trip with Gloria and Francis Searle to Namibia and Convention in Windhoek, plus a ten day visit of friends from Australia. We are now back and raring to go. By now most Clubs will be well into their Peace Poster Contest Project with all their schools working on their posters. I hope the convenors are keeping in monthly contact with their schools, as it helps things go smoothly. Items of Interest Once again Mr Thys Cilliers of the NMMU Fine Arts Department will facilitate the judging of the Posters, as I believe that they have done an excellent job in the past. The Posters will be delivered to the NMMU on the 20 th August and be on display in the NMMU Dept. of Fine Arts Quad on the 21 st August. The winners will be announced at a function held at the NMMU venue on the 21 st August, starting at 18h00 (6pm). Refreshments will be served. Requirements Poster should to be collected from the schools in first week of August Each Lions Club should choose their winner/s from each of their schools. The winning student, parent or guardian and Lions Club must complete the section on the sticker allocated to them. Affix the sticker to the back lower right-hand corner of the poster. Club should, if possible, take Digital Photos of their winning Students (head & shoulders) with their Poster for use in Press Releases or PPC launch events. Winning posters are to be forwarded to the DC PPC to arrive not later than the 8 th August 2014 (posters to be rolled, NOT folded). Where required some form of fixative should be applied to surface of the poster to ensure the integrity of the Poster. News The GM Foundation based in Port Elizabeth has agreed to promote the Lions Peace Poster Contest in 6 7 schools in the Northern areas of Port Elizabeth. They have held information sharing sessions with the schools and an International Artist has demonstrated developing posters to the schools. Two retired Art Teachers will facilitate the Art Classes of the selected students in the participating Schools. The GM Foundation is promoting the Lions PPC as Painting for Peace and will ensure the Lions PPC rules and regulations will be followed. The GM Foundation is also looking into getting some of the Old model C schools to twin with the schools from the Northern areas.

Club Participation So far we have only 11 Lions Clubs participating in the PPC, however the number of kits ordered has increased to 54 this year. An increase of 3. SHOULD ANY CLUB STILL WANT TO ORDER PPC KITS PLEASE CONTACT ME AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. District 410D s PPC Calendar 2015 Cabinet has agreed that PE Host and Cape Recife Lions Clubs can produce the Calendar for If it is again successful it may become a District project for The provisional formatting of the PPC Calendar is already in place and the two clubs are only awaiting the final 12 posters to be chosen and photographed prior to going to print. It is planned to have the Calendars available well before our Conference at Willows in November Lion Ray Brown DC Peace Poster Contest Adam Road, Springfield, Port Elizabeth, 6070 (h) ; (c) ; (f) rclgbrown@gmail.com

INCOMING OFFICERS TRAINING IN PORT ELIZABETH Comments and photographs sent in by Sanet Emmerick from St Croix Lions Club and Debbie Olivier from Sedgefield Lions Club On the weekend of May 2014, the new incoming President of St Croix, Sanet Emmerick, and Zone chairperson (also current President) of St Croix, Tilly Strydom, attended the Incoming President s training at Madiba Bay Guesthouse Port Elizabeth. What a wonderful weekend of team building, friendship making and putting faces to names so often only corresponded to via e mail! Thank you all, President Zwaai and I on behalf of Sedgefield Lions found this a great weekend with wonderful fellowship and lots of food for thought. Debbie Olivier

GONUBIE LIONS CLUB Because some mothers do not have children living in the same town we decided that it would be nice to spoil some of them on Mother s Day by arranging a braai lunch at Stirling Lodge Retirement Centre. There were approximately 35 residents who did not go out for the day. We provided wine and fruit juice and cooked their meat on an open fire for them which they thoroughly enjoyed. Photos : Lions preparing the meat; residents enjoying their lunch; Wilfred thanks Lions on behalf of the residents and Lion Lyn replies to the thank you.

The McClelland Adult Centre for Intellectually Impaired recently received a donation of beautiful material for curtains. With the help of generous local residents we managed to make seven sets of curtains for their hostel. These were presented to the Manager and Sister Roni, who is President of Cambridge Lions, by Lion Jeanette on behalf of Gonubie Lions.

PORT ALFRED LIONS CLUB Surplus Christmas cakes to SUNSET PARK Moths Haven in Port Alfred. 30 plus residents. Old Bill Charlie McFarlane & Haven Manager, Richard Francis welcomed PA Lions. LP Lloyd thanked all residents for their turnout & explained why cakes were being handed over. Tessa & Moth ladies served tea and... LIONS CHRISTMAS CAKES.

This project goes a LONG way towards helping the Ndlambe SPCA sterilise cats & dogs within their district. There has NEVER been such a facility. PA Lions made a LARGE contribution by paying for the STAINLESS STEEL. Carl from Lee Cat & his Company designed, built & delivered on site, at NO COST. What a trooper!! Thanks to all who attended & Project Convenor Rod Allin. LP Lloyd SPCA MESSAGE Freedom from hunger and thirst! Freedom from discomfort! Freedom from pain, injury or disease! Freedom to express normal behaviour! Freedom from fear and distress!

Port Alfred Service Clubs take turns to host a Fellowship evening. This one was the turn of Rotary Club of Port Alfred. PA Lions had 9 members & 3 partners this time round. The decor was superb, prizes were won, company & camaraderie amongst all who were there was GREAT. A very pleasant meal was served. Creates SO MUCH goodwill. We are all in the same game!!

PORT REX LIONS CLUB The Port Rex Lions Club Eisteddfod The Eisteddfod started on the 7 th May with the school choirs carrying on until 19 th May with the prizewinners showcase

The Bulldog Motor cycle rally was held on the weekend 9-11 th May 2014 Great fun and games was had by all the bikers but lots of hard work was done by the Lions members

Sedgefield Lions Club - WE SERVE Slow Festival: Our now annual Sedgefield Slow Festival was held over the Easter Weekend. Last year we had the worst weather possible, but Lion Gerda this year looked into her Crystal ball and said that the weather was going to be great. And it was bar for a short shower on the morning of the Trail Run. Our Lions decided to go orange in support of the festival s official colours, and we in a voluntary capacity manned two watering tables for this event. Also, as per tradition, the Lions took part in the Easter Parade on the Sunday and with thanks to the Eden Lions, this year our mascot Mel was able to don the Melvin the Mascot costume as opposed to the Easter Bunny costume. Our club donated R2000 worth of Easter Eggs which were distributed during and Easter egg hunt in the morning on the beach, and during the Easter parade. A very successful partnership with Cornel Delafield and the Lions meant that three well attended and much enjoyed Drive Inn evenings were held. Thank you to Lions Henri and Charles for all their efforts in erecting the scaffolding and to Lion Charles who gave us assistance from his company JGee Construction for additional help with labour and hardware. A BIG thank you to all the Lions who turned out in such good spirit to help with the braaing of the hamburgers and prego rolls, the making of the slush puppies, popcorn and candy floss team work at its best. And fun to boot! A big thank you to Ben and Cathy Weideman too for their responsibility on the village green with the wine garden which once proved to be a success.

Our drive inn screen scaffolding goes up and the candy floss makers! Our Sedgefield Response vehicle sponsored by Sedgefield Lions and the Sedgefield Chamber of Business also took part in the Easter Parade. Lions Bennie and Cathy Weideman were happy to report on the progress made by Oom Kreefie who last week was admitted to the George Provincial Hospital for his second hip replacement. The Weideman s have been very instrumental in this success story from the sourcing of the two prosthesis s and in getting Oom Kreefie and his wife to and from Karatara and the hospital in George. Oom Kreefie now has two brand new hips and will soon be able to return to light duty at work, something he has not been able to do in years and which his previous company promised to him once he was fit enough to return to work. Cathy reported that Oom Kreefie was overwhelmed.

World Lunch Relay : Due to a number of our members having to work, we to the Slow Town and South African approach to our World Lunch Relay and had a later afternoon braai instead. Quite a number of our Lions were able to attend with their families and visiting families and the children even put on a show for us!

In 1925, Helen Keller challenged Lions to be "Knights of the Blind." Since then, the elimination of preventable blindness has been an important service program for Lions worldwide. Sadly, there are still millions of Africans, young and old, who needlessly suffer from preventable blindness. Lions of Africa have made a real difference in preventing and eliminating preventable blindness in their communities through service projects such as vision screenings, vaccinating children against measles and providing drug treatments for river blindness and trachoma. Through the Lions Eye Health Programs, we work to prevent blindness, restore eyesight and improve eye health for millions in Africa and around the world. Local clubs play an important role in helping to identify visually impaired individuals, by providing them with the necessary resources to aid in restoring their eyesight. Local Lions clubs are ideally suited to establish partnerships with local optometrists and eye specialists. Through these associations, Lions are able to direct individuals with preventable blindness to the resources they desperately need. A relatively inexpensive pair of spectacles can make such an amazing difference in the lives of those that are needlessly blind. Our "Recycle for Sight" program aims to reuse good used spectacles to assist those needy individuals that do not have access to proper eye care, for whatever reason. If your country's regulations permit you to recycle spectacles, then it is also a great way to assist those in need. Wishing District Governor Elect Carl & Debbie van Blerk Bon Voyage to the International Convention in Toronto and hope they have a wonderful time on their travels
