Match. Game. Contest. By whatever name it s called, it still smacks of rivalry, opposition, conflict even! But not so with The Regent Secondary School 6 th Annual Inter-School Football Competition. Was it competitive? Yes! Was it fierce? Yes! Was it driven? Yes! But it was also Shakespearean in its approach. How? We know that Shakespeare is on the curriculum of study for this term but what is the connection? Well, the term Fair Play was one of the phrases invented by the Bard himself According to the fair play of the world, let me have audience (King John Act 5 Scene 2) And fair play was indeed exhibited by all competing schools in spite of the rain, the wet field and the unavoidable late start. Funds raised from last year s Fun Day was used to pay for University tuition, (four years), for one of the orphans from our charities, a portion donated to the Brekete Family programme for the payent of the medical treatment of three children, donation to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), School for the blind, amongst a number of other Charities. 3 P A G E 3 INTER-SCHOOL FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT M ystifying! Mesmerizing! Captivating! Entrancing!!! All of these words describe The Regent School 6 th Annual Inter-School Football Tournament, which took place on Regent s football pitch on Saturday, the 5 th of May, It all kicked off, literally, about 9 am and ended at around 6 pm. During this year s tournament, 17 schools participated; 9 in the Senior boys category. The Regent Secondary School, (TRSS), had 2 teams participating in the tournament - Team 1 and Team 2, both of whom played very well to ensure successful games for the school. Team 2 drew two matches and won 1, unfortunately, that could only get them as far as the quarterfinals, despite all of their efforts to turn things around in their last match where they hit the crossbar as many as 5 times. Team 1, on the other hand, won all of their matches, with a clean sheet (they didn t concede a single goal), up until the finals where the match ended 1-1 and went to penalties where Premiere Academy came out victorious. For the Junior boys category, The Regent School also presented two teams. Team 1 for the Junior team, put up a fight but were knocked out in the quarter-finals while Team 2, went as far as the semi-finals; they came in at the fourth position, in their category. In the girl s category, however, TRSS presented only one team, nevertheless, this was not a disadvantage to the girls as they still managed to make it out of the group stages. They went all the way to the finals, only to be bested by one school, International Community School (ICS). The Regent girl s team came second in their category. Overall the tournament was successful and most of all, it was a ton of fun! -Akinwole Omoboriowo III (Year 9 Volta)

4 P A G E 4 INTER-SCHOOL FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT Football is like life it requires perseverance, self-denial, hard work, sacrifice, dedication and respect for authority Vince Lombardi. The long awaited Annual Inter-School Football Tournament finally began! Hundreds of cars and buses burst through the distinctive Regent blue gates all at the same time, ferrying children of all ages and abilities. Many froze in confusion, realizing that the only way to get in without getting lost or crushed by the crowd was to simply drop out of your car and keep walking. Meanwhile, children sat impatiently in the seats of these cars, tingling with excitement. Soon enough, the games began. Time flew as everyone present sat facing the blinding mix of neon and dark colours, darting in and out, between each other. A cheer here, a cheer there. It was difficult trying to watch about five matches at the same time, but anyone who was enthusiastic enough was able to keep track of all the scores. Then there was the food. There was an exciting array of deeply flavoursome snacks, from the mouth watering suya to melt-in-your-mouth chips; courtesy of the indomitable Drumstix. I must admit, this was one of my favourite parts of the event! As the day went on, there were many victories, many long faces, and many just happy to be there. As each hardworking team was knocked off the pitch, the moment when the champions would be announced drew close. Once again, some were victorious, and others left with the determination to work harder next time. All in all, The Regent Secondary School can celebrate another successful event! Do you think the rain has affected your performance? We think it has affected us negatively because it s a bit dark and the grass is slippery. But it s okay because we can still play. I am nine years old and I am in Year 4 at Regent Primary. Why did you come to this event? I m not playing, but I came to support my school and watch the matches. Would you be interested in TRSS when you re older? Yes. I like how the school looks. W hat are your names? Chisom, Shiana and Mary What school do you attend? Capital Science. How many matches have you played so far, and which was your favourite? We have played two matches so far and really enjoyed playing against Louisville and Premiere Academy. How has the rain affected your playing so far? The rain has made the floor slippery, and our players are cold. We think we would perform better if it hadn t rained earlier this morning.

6 P A G E 6 BOARDING MASTERCHEF COMPETITION O n the 1st of May, 2018, the second round of the Boarding Master Chef competition, commenced. Each hostel was asked to make a replica of Special Chinese fried rice, usually made by Mrs A for the students on special occasions. The match was quite intense as every hostel tried their best to get top marks in order to increase the possibility of winning. Each hostel got the same ingredients and a two-hour time limit. Obi Hostel started off the match by boiling the rice to make it tender, while Oduduwa engaged in other less obvious strategies to take over the whole competition. Elkanemi was close behind, with Ruqayyat Zanna s trusty leadership as the match was got more heated and intense. The end result was, Elkanemi and Oduduwa coming in joint first place, Danfodio came in third place and Obi hostel came in the last place.

8 P A G E 8 INTERNATIONAL NEWS North Korea Frees Three American Prisoners Ahead of Trump-Kim talks hree Americans who had been jailed in North Korea have been T released and are heading back home. Their release comes after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un held talks with US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, who visited Pyongyang ahead of the planned summit between Donald Trump and Mr Kim. The prisoners- Kim Dong Chul, Kim Hak Song and Tony Kim - were accused by North Korea of anti-state activities. Kim Dong Chul, a South Korea-born pastor, was arrested in 2015 and accused of spying. A year later, he was sentenced to 10 years' hard labour. The two other men were working at Pyongyang University of Science and Technology, founded by Evangelical Christians from overseas when they were arrested last year and accused of hostile acts. The prisoners families were very grateful for their release. Until now, the only American to have been freed from North Korea during the Trump presidency is Otto Warmbier, who returned to the US in a coma and died. He had been captive for 17 months. On Wednesday, Mr Pompeo met Kim Yong Chol, Vice Chairman of the Central Committee of North Korea's ruling party, for lunch; their first meeting for more than a decade. One can only wonder whether these releases and meetings can lead to better relationships in future. ByTariro Mudyazvivi (Year 9 Senegal) MET GALA 2018 s the first Monday of May rolls around, the Met Gala comes with it. The annually held event is a fundraiser A for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The Met Gala also signifies the opening of the Costume Institute s annual fashion exhibition. This year, the exhibition is themed Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination. The exclusive event welcomes high profile personalities from the arts, music, fashion, and film industries. The Gala calls for an emphasis on fashion that incorporates the chosen theme and features luxury designers; ranging from Cristóbal Balenciaga to Donatella Versace. This year s theme - Heavenly Bodies - celebrates masterpieces of religious art in the museum's holdings. Cochaired by Amal Clooney, Rihanna and Donatella Versace, it also a featured a surprise performance form, Madonna. The guest list was extensive; the outfits were absolutely amazing! Eyes were on celebrities like Katy Perry (wearing a Versace angel-themed piece) and Rihanna (donning the Popethemed Maison Margiela by John Galliano)- who embraced the theme and took it to the next level.
